Welcome to Gold Cost, Australia: host of the Tier III, $170,000 Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourt tournament. The Thalgo Australian is the first tournament on the VWTT calendar. Top players from all over the world have travelled to Gold Coast to make their presence on the tour and are all vying for the best ranking, going into the Australian Open, which is quickly approaching: only 2 1/2 weeks away. Being that this is a new tour, all players are starting from scratch, and will have to work their way up to the top and prove themselves all over again. Will Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis be vowed the Queens of the tour or will up-and-comers Jelena Dokic and Kim Clijsters or past players like Jana Novotna take over the thrown? These questions will all start to unravel this week, as the VWTT season has has now began. Get ready to roll: it's game, set, match time! Enjoy your stay at Gold Coast, and good luck to all players participating!

Alex, because Venus and Justine did not play the first round, I only used everyone's unseeded players for the first round. Jelena Dokic's chosen unseeded players did exceptionally well in Rnd 1, and when comparing her unseeded players with Rachel's in Rnd 1, it came out at 6-0 6-0

Williams_Rulez, game points in a set are determined by comparing how well your choosen team players did in each set with how well your opponent's choosen team did in each set. Since this is round one and Venus and Justine Henin had a bye for the first round, I only used everyone's unseeded players.
Each of your chosen players earn points for your team when they when a set. The amount they earn is dependent upon how many games they win by in a set; For example, Iva Majoli lost her first round 6-4 4-6 3-6. Therefore, she gained 2 points for her team in set 1, deducted 2 points in set two, and deducted 3 points in set.
I kind of don't want to explain the rules all over again, lol, cuz it takes a lot of time, but if you want to see how I exactly determine how you get 7-6 0-6 7-6, you should read the "Sign-up for VWTT" post that I added. All the rules are there, and explains everything fully or you can just Click here
Note: In the first round, like I said, I didn't use seeded players, because Venus and Justine hadn't yet played. Therefore, I also didn't use your tiebreak player to decide the tiebreakers. I flipped a coin. In the 2nd round, however, I will begin using all players.

I thought 2nd round results were going to be posted this afternoon...Jeff?

The Adidas International, a Tier II event, begins next Monday. Don't forget to look at the entry list and submit your teams. Deadline for submission is Sunday at 7:00pm (board time). As always, you can wait until the draw comes out, which should be on Saturday.
I have posted a message about this in the Adidas International thread. To go there and view the current entry list and choose your teams, click here. Jan 6th, 2002, 01:25 AM
Hehe....I still care Jeff! I want to be able to take solace in that I lost to the tourniment's eventual champion! Gooooo Sabatini!
Can't wait to play in the Sydney event, hope the draw is released soon...
Jan 6th, 2002, 02:21 AM
A first round defeat is not the best way to start the season, but it can only get better. ;)
Thank you for the great effort, Jeff! :)
Jan 6th, 2002, 04:20 AM
Jeff- What should we do about the Sydney tourniment since the draw isn't posted? When are our picks due?
Jan 6th, 2002, 04:27 AM
Hmm, yeah I know. The best I can do is allow everyone to send in their teams before the first match is played, which is Sunday in Australia. Kind of unusual for the draw not to be out yet. If it's not out before matches are played, just go ahead and select your team by looking at the entry list.

Dokic prevails at Gold Coast

Gold Coast- In one of the most dramatic and exciting matches of the tournament, Jelena Dokic defeated Gabriela Sabatini 6-3 6-7 6-4, in 1hr 45min., to claim the first tournament title of 2002.
Although Jelena has already proven to be a force to rekon with on the tour, nobody expected her to give such an extraordinary performance as she did this week. She dominated the entire field, loosing only one set in the entire tournament (to Sabatini in today's final) and 14 games. "I'm really satisfied with the way I played...just worked a lot during the break. My dad and I knew that I needed to work on my serve, we did, and it payed off this week."
Jelena is now the one to beat as the one to beat in 2002. "This is what we work for, you know? I train to do my best, and to start off the season as a winner is great. Now I will play Sydney, hopefully gain a bit more preparation for the Australian."
Jelena also won the doubles title with Bulgarian partner Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere. The team defeated Davenport/Stevenson 6-0 6-0.
