Henin may skip Olympics because of asthma

The Canadian Press

11/5/2007 3:00:58 PM

MADRID, Spain - Justin Henin might not defend her Olympic gold medal in Beijing because of concern the city's air pollution will trigger her asthma.

Henin withdrew from the China Open in September because of her asthma and is worried she might be forced to skip the Beijing Games next August.

"I've had asthma for a few months now and I felt very bad in New York at the end of the (U.S. Open), so Beijing, I was really concerned about that," Henin said Monday at the Sony Ericsson Championships. "I was pretty disappointed because I wanted to play the (China Open) and get used to the conditions."

Henin said she has since controlled her asthma with the help of a specialist.

The air quality in Beijing is "a big problem" International Olympic Committee inspection team leader Hein Verbruggen said. His remarks came a week after the United Nations said air pollution was a major concern for athletes' health ahead of the games.

"It's true that Beijing is going to be tough with the Olympic Games with the problem I have, but now it seems that everything is under control, which is important because the Olympic Games remain a very important goal for me in 2008," Henin said.

The Belgian begins her WTA championships defence Tuesday against Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.

Justine said NOTHING about skipping Olympics in those quotes! Who the hell decided to run with this title?

What's more: "It's true that Beijing is going to be tough with the Olympic Games with the problem I have, but now it seems that everything is under control, which is important because the Olympic Games remain a very important goal for me in 2008," Henin said.

Hablo, why even post it? It's obvious posters here only read the title, and we'll be hearing for a year how Justine may not play Olympics.

Can someone please show me where Justine says it?

Nov 5th, 2007, 08:17 PM
She does not say she will not play, just that it could be a serious problem for her. Unless she cannot breath at all, Justine will be competing at the Olympics. Still, they never should have awarded the Games to China, especially with their pollution problems.

I'm sorry but how can someone forecast an asthma attack eight months from now.
Henin barely lost in polluted and humid Miami. She won the US Open in high ozone conditions.
All of a sudden she can't do it when she's been doing it for some big tournaments?

If anyone should be wondering if they're playing in Beijing it's Venus who is having the breathing issues right now not Justine who is playing in Madrid this week.

The pollution in Miami and the ozone in New York don't even begin to compare to Beijing-- see the multitude of articles people have referced stating that athletes in many sports have concerns.

allergy is serious problem, especially when it appears as asthma / breathing difficulties. If I remember correctly Steffi Graf had often allergy problems in RG, mostly hay fever, she sneezed and sneezed, had a runny nose and itching eyes. I have my hay fever season each year and I know how annoying it is, but it must be million times worse if you have asthma and you can`t breathe properly.

Justine got out of her sick-bed to train for three weeks before going to Athens in 2004 to represent her country in the Olympics. She had to go back to bed again after playing a few rounds in the US Open right after the Olympics because she was completely exhausted from her endeavor in Athens.

That she won the gold is a miracle especially after being down 1-5 in the 3rd set against Myskina in the SF.

Her love for the game and for her country is beyond questioning.

What I said was that Venus who is still having breathing issues now should be the one who might want to be saying she might not be able to play the Olympics.

I read the article and for me, making a comment like that 9 months before the Olympics is giving in to doubt way too soon.
If this was March and Justine said well, I would really like to focus on Wimbledon and that will take a lot out of me that their might not be enough for the Olympics, that is understood.

In case you haven't been reading much of Olympic News, the Air Issue in Beijing is a great deal and have been much talked these past months!
No less than the IOC big kahuna, Jacques Rogge mentioned that if Beijing can't clean up (re suitable enough for players to play in outdoor conditions) the air by olympics time, some events might be cancelled, postponed or held in other venue.....

So Justine commenting about it, talking about her chances of defending her Olypic gold is timely!

Maybe these kinds of articles are just a backhanded way to complain about the pollution in China.
I don't think Henin has signed onto the World Wide Green Conspiracy.

As an asthma sufferer, Henin has valid concerns about how the environment in Bejing could affect her health.

What most people don't understand is that asthma sufferers can be triggered by something as benign as anyone wearing heavy perfume which can happen at anytime in public.

I do think if Henin isn't having acute asthma problems prior to the Bejing Olympics, she will go and be followed closely by her pulmonologist.
