I think their most classic matches were the two US Open Semifinals. I prefer the 1999 one because Martina won. The 2000 was heartbreaking, but also fantastic.

Their 2001 AO Semifinal is a guilty pleasure of mine, too.

I will miss you forever, Martina! :sobbing:

Their 3 Grand Slam matches during the 1999/2000 period were the three best imo. This was when their rivalry was it its most intense, Hingis had been dominating the rivalry more or less for two years and Venus was just starting to come into her own and really take it to Martina on a more consistent basis. Plus there was the fact that Martina was desperately trying to hang on to the mantle of best player in the world while Venus was trying desperately to establish herself as the best. Magical stuff.

In terms of competitiveness, drama, and for most parts, quality; there is no surpassing their two US Open semis. But overall my favourite match between them would be the US Open 2000 SF. Purely because Martina came SO CLOSE to winning but Venus wouldn't let her winning streak end. Great.

mine was warsaw last year...drama with venus cramping and all that jazz...managing to eek out the win in champion style :)

Their four Slam matches 1999-2001 were all when they were at their peak. Nicely done.

Was really close until the end, when Venus started cramping and some of her beads fell off

USO 1999 and 2000 were definitely the best, but Id pick 1999 because Hingis won so I liked it more. ;) Other then that I havent seen a lot of older ones.

One of the few matches I recorded (was working when they played) and still have on tape. I haven't played it (don't even have a VCR hooked up), but I feel more comfortable keeping it...like a favorite blanket. Thanks for the video. Not the same though without Carillo, John McEnroe, and Enberg commentating.

Especially like when Venus falls mid point, then gains the momentum back at the baseline before finishing the point off with a volley.

This match was so good because both players were playing so well from every part of the court.

Can someone tell me what happened with their AO semi final match? Please, no hating from fans, but did Martina play that good, or was Venus just crap?

Venus was awful that day - Martina didn't have to do anything really special.

Venus actually played like crap that whole tourney - Getting to the Semi's was a great result considering

Venus had like 40 UFE; Martina had about 10 winners. I think that summarizes it nicely.

Here is a CNNSI article about the loss. Notice that Hingis won 60 points; 38 of them Venus' UFE :o :help:

Venus really did prompt superbowlgate:lol:

My best match between these two was the Wimbledon quarter-final in 2000. Venus finally broke through at another slam and started her march to the stop. Such incredible rallies and just incredible power from venus and great variety from Hingis. Venus's movement that day was:eek:  :worship:

But their 1999 Open match was spectacular... mostly because Hingis hit the best shot in the history of women's tennis to set up match point ;)

Whoever thinks that the quality of women's tennis nowadays was even close to in 2000 needs to look at those highlights! :worship: Obviously this wasnt the standard of every match, but if Hingis or Venus were to play like that in 2007 they would be in the top 3 in the world easily. I forgot how great Venus was at net, and how often she came in and hit close groundies. Martina of 99/00 was so much better then her 06/07 version it isnt even funny. She used her forehand so aggressively and really dictated play with a little more oomph on her shots. Definitely one of the very best matches in the history of women's tennis, even if Martina had a mini-meltdown at the end.

I love all Hingis-Venus matches regardless of who wins!

The quality of tennis during '99 to 2002 were extremely high. I missed the times wherein the QF lineup most of the time would consist of Hingis, Venus, Serena, Seles, Jennifer, Lindsay and OTHERS. Hehe!

I'm gonna actually go in a different route. The 99 & 00 US Opens were obviously great but the 2001 Miami match was so awesome in terms of quality tennis. Venus was so unbelievable in that 1st set. Winner after winner after winner. Of course, she didn't keep it up in the 2nd set & back came Hingis. But when it all mattered in the tie-break, Venus showed again why she was a great player. This is their best 2-setter. I will miss their rivalry

NO..!!! :tape: :tape:

Lindsay was beating the 99/00
Martina in STRAIGHT SETs...

and Lindsay won like 5 in a row
against that Hingis...

but agreed...

Thats because Lindsay was playing phenominal tennis. Martina of 06/07 wouldn't have pushed that Lindsay anymore, except she might have been smart enough not to try and outhit her during that abysmal AO final performance.

Exactly Warsaw again a plus 80 unforced error fest by Venus and plus 40 for Martina

I think Usopen 1999 and 2000 the best ones in terms of quality and challenge between the two.

In terms of the most one sided have to pick the Usopen 1997 for intance, Hingis did everything she wanted to in that match.
