2001 Australian Open. One of my favourite matches ever, and one of the best Hingis played.

2001 AO QF - that was a great match from both sides. 8-6 in the third - are you kidding me? :)

2001 AO QF, one of the great all time classics.

1999 USO Final S.Williams def. M.Hingis 63 76 comes a close second though ;)

She absolutely was. That was a preview of Serena circa 2002. Lindsay gave her a great warmup the match before (which was actually the best match of that tournament...if not 2001 overall).

I like that way of putting it. :)

That Lindsay match was definitely the best Lindsay/Serena one I've ever seen.

2001 AO QF. No question about it, the best match played between this generation of players (Hingis-Davenport-Serena-Venus). The RG 1992 final (Seles-Graf) of this generation.

2000 USO SF Hingis v. Venus was better. I can think of a few that compete with that match.

2001 QF Australian Open will always be one of the best matches of the modern era. Another match from Hingis' point of view would have been the match they played in Sydney in 2001, the week before the Aus Open, where Martina came back from 4-1 and two service breaks in the second set down to comeback and win the set and match 64 75.

I completely disagree. I've seen their AO QF match and I think it's still overrated.

I LOVE their first meeting in Miami. :worship: :worship: :worship:

An inexperienced Serena was leading in the third until Martina took a bathroom break to break Serena's rhythm. Nonetheless, it's my favorite Hingis/Serena match.

I agree about that Miami meeting. Serena was one of the first players not to be daunted by the superlative skills of Hingis, usually everyone got flummoxed at the prospect of playing Hingis. Serena's serve even then was SO good:worship:

Their best match in terms of quality was the Aussie Open 2001 quarter-final. Hingis dug so deep, and Serena just played every shot in her repetoire but still couldnt pull it off. Great drama:D

Their best match was probably the Australian Open 2001.

But my favourite was the US Open 2001 semi  Serena just killed her.

Not even close. The 2000 US Open semifinal ended in 4 consecutive games of Hingis errors/implosion. The AO 2001 saw both players playing awesome tennis the whole way through, in fact the last couple points were the best of the match! Shriver even said Serena's drop volley was the most spectacular save of a match point she's ever seen :)

Its the 99 U.S. Open match for me.After Hingis beat Venus in the Semis I wanted Serena to win the final so bad and when she did I totally fell in love with her.The honorable mention goes to the 2001 U.S. Open Semi just loved Serena's dismantling of Hingis[extra sweet was hearing the rotten and biased Mary Carrillo's distraught reaction from the commentary booth.]that was Serena playing some of her most outstanding tennis.

You clearly have not seen the match. Venus tracked EVERYTHING down in those last four games to steal the win from Hingis. For once just give credit.

You clearly dont realize that Hingis was deflated after not properly putting that overhead away. Venus stepped it up, but Hingis CLEARLY wasnt playing with the same intensity.

Only in the last game. Venus stepped it up big time to break her back. I think she hit like 3 winners that game. And the following game, was unbelievable. Venus cracked her fastest serve of the match, and then hit that amazing forehand where Venus was so far off the court.

You're right, Venus kept up her intensity and played even better. Martina however, you could tell she was more winded and didn't think she could win.

tennisIlove09
Nov 6th, 2007, 03:19 AM
well even the commentators noted that Martina was winded. her blowing everyone out of the water the first 5 rounds probably didnt help her cause. i am pretty sure that was the year her longest match was like 1 hr 3 minutes, and that was Seles in the QF. lol. she was just crushing everyone.

huh? after the overhead smash there were almost no rallies. just a myriad of lazy forehand errors from hingis. she took a page out of the book of dokic... and tanked! ;)

I saw parts of it, it was an even bigger beatdown than the 2001 US Open semifinal, but Martina was barely moving out there.. Serena hit like almost 40 winners though, she had a unbelievable tournament then (thrashing Venus and beating Capriati in the final)..

Im surpried how many fellow Serena fans picked the USO SF over the 99 USO Final. Serena may have been that bit extra more awesome in 2001, but she was pretty spectacular in the 99 Final, and it was much more exciting!

In 2001, you just knew Martina didn't stand a chance, John Newcombe kept saying about once every 5 minutes how he felt sorry for Martina
