View Full Version : Marie during the hardcourt season

Jul 20th, 2002, 12:52 AM
Well, I guess we can post all the stuff about Marie's hardcourt season in here! :)

Stanford draw is out and things are looking good.... Marie faces a qualifier in the first round. Then, she'd play Anna Kournikova or Anna Smashnova. Then she would possibly have Venus in the quarterfinals. I really think Marie can reach the quarters at least here! :) Anna K is in poor form, and I think Marie could overpower Anna S, but she'd have to be patient and not make too many errors. Good luck to Marie! :D

Good idea to make a thread for the new season ;)

2nd round is definitely possible, and then she's either gonna face a good player or one of my other favs...but yeah she definitely has a chance of reaching the quarters! I'll hope so! :)

Vanity, that is a good looking draw for Marie! :D But unless Anna K. has found her form, I think Marie would have more trouble with Smashnova than Kournikova. Don't you?

I'm not anity ;) but I agree with you, cat.

adnil, huh? Did I get you and (V)anity mixed up? ;)

A match against Venus would be great experience for MGM! :D

The qualifier MGM drew in the first round is Wynne Prakusya. Marie has played her once and beat her... a 6-3 5-7 7-5 win over her at 2001 Tashkent. Of course, Marie wasn't the player she is now back then. I've seen Prakusya play before. She's very short, and is mainly a counterpuncher but she's a good doubles player so she has good volleys. She doesn't really have any major weapons though. MGM just needs to overpower her and not give her any free points. She's just gotta be consistent, because if she isn't, Prakusya will put on the pressure during the rallies and draw the errors from Marie. We'll see how she fares tomorrow! :)

wynne won the doubles competition here last year (with janet lee), so I guess she shouldn't be underestimated. but I'm just glad MGM didn't draw anne kremer ;)

Jul 23rd, 2002, 05:14 PM
Yeah, Anne Kremer would have been pretty bad! :o

Jul 23rd, 2002, 06:06 PM
Ooooh yes, I was afraid she would draw Anne Kremer too :o
Anne crushed everyone in qualifying. I was also afraid she would draw a resurgent Lucic, who seems to be fired up and regaining her form in this tournament.

The good news is that I'll have a match report right from Stanford!!! My friend (who posts on the board as Cynicole) will be watching the match this morning! :D

Jul 23rd, 2002, 09:01 PM
Well, Marie lost!!!
She was beaten 6-1 3-6 6-3 by Wynne Prakusya. I'll be getting a report later so I can let you know what's going on! :)

marie, nooooooooo

OK, next chance:

Week of July 29, 2002
Acura Classic at San Diego, California, USA (Hardcourt)

MGM plays iroda tulyaganova. in case she should win this match, she'd get to play lindsay d. in the next round! wow!

good luck, marie :D

Jul 29th, 2002, 11:18 AM
Tough draw, but also the best way to set a good result!

Good luck Marie! :bounce:

Jul 30th, 2002, 08:45 AM
hey, you know what? MGM def. iroda 6:4 6:3!!!!! :D
awesome result, marie! I really didn't expect this after her loss against prakusya last week. congratulations!

now she gets to play lindsay, which is hard, but brilliant. it can only add to her experience. I think the only time she ever played one of the turbo babes was capriati last year in zurich. good luck!

Jul 30th, 2002, 01:22 PM
Great result indeed :bounce:

Congrats Marie :) A good result against Lindsay might be just what she needs (oh, I'm so positive thinking ;))

Aug 1st, 2002, 11:11 AM
lindsay def. MGM 6-3 6-0

well, not too big a surprise, though I'm a bit disappointed by the bagel! the last time marie got handed a bagel was, if I remember correctly, by myriam casanova - though she finally won the match 0-6 6-4 6-3.
lindsay is (still) in a different league, I guess.

Aug 1st, 2002, 02:22 PM
well....I guess it's neither a good or a bad result

The 2nd set might be a bit dissapointing, but on the other hand, I didn't expect MGM to win, so the setscores don't matter so much to me now...

Aug 2nd, 2002, 11:02 AM
btw/ is vanity on holiday??

Aug 2nd, 2002, 03:50 PM
I don't know....you would think so ;)

Aug 5th, 2002, 03:53 PM
let's move on to JP Morgan Chase Open.

1st round:

MGM def. corina morariu 3:6 6:3 7:5. phew, tighter than expected! nice effort from corina, as well!

marie now takes on anne kremer.

Aug 6th, 2002, 11:28 AM
I must say I have a bit double feeling about this match! I have never been a fan of Corina, but, like everyone, I'm glad she's back, and wish her good results to come! Still of course, I'm very happy Marie won! :) :)

Good luck against Anne Kremer! I think she can win that...

Aug 6th, 2002, 03:01 PM
hi adnil :wavey:

yeah, I think she can win it too. of course it's gonna be tough. kremer has been playing well pretty much all year.
marie certainly needs some ranking points: I just saw that she dropped to no. 60 this week (why? have the points of the basel tournament, where she was in the final, come off this week??).

Aug 6th, 2002, 08:17 PM
You can call me everything but a ranking specialist ;) so I have no idea why she's no60 now! well, maybe because there are 59 women with more points then her ;)

I hope she can do well her, and gain points and confidence before the US Open!

well, yes... if i think about it really hard, i'll come to the conclusion that this might be true... :)

Aug 8th, 2002, 12:49 PM
kremer def. MGM 6:2 6:2 :(
I'm NOT impressed. I didn't expect marie to win, but I though it could be a tighter match, maybe even a 3-setter.
it's been quite a while since she beat a better-ranked player. it's pretty disappointing.

:bounce: I'm smart

Aug 8th, 2002, 05:29 PM
Not a good result indeed :( I also expected a thigher match than this 6-2, 6-2 :(

Aug 13th, 2002, 08:34 AM
next match, next loss

MGM loses in the 1st round of qualifying (!) against obata 3:6 3:6.

what's up marie???

Aug 13th, 2002, 11:05 AM
Oh dear, I thought she wasn't playing at all this week! :(

Aug 18th, 2002, 01:07 PM
in new haven marie found out how to win again!!

1st round qualifying: MGM def. Cara Black 6:4 6:2
2nd round qualifying: MGM def. Wynne Prakusya 6:4 6:2 (revenge! revenge!)

two solid wins, I would say. next she'll play jennifer hopkins, whom she's beaten 6:0 6:4 in philadelphia in 2000. let's hope she'll make the main draw, that'd be great!

Aug 18th, 2002, 04:02 PM
Yeah, go Marie! :):):)

I'm happy to find out about these results, and I hope that when I come back Friday, there's some more good news to be heard! :)

Aug 19th, 2002, 11:08 AM
sorry, adnil, as soon as you'll read this, you will know that marie didn't make the main draw, she lost to jennifer hopkins 7-6(3) 4-6 2-6

so no more results to be posted until the us open
