Jim Neal wants to be the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate. The Associated Press reports that a spokesman confirmed this morning that the North Carolina Democrat is homosexual. The confirmation followed a discussion about the candidate's sexual orientation that took place this weekend on a liberal blog.

Here's what someone identified as Neal said in response to questions on BlueNC.com: "I am indeed. No secret and no big deal to me -- I wouldn't be running if I didn't think otherwise. ... I'm not running this race to make some social statement. I'm running to lead in the Senate for the voters in NC -- something Sen. Dole has not done. ... When people meet me, they'll see beyond the labels and into my character."

Neal, a former investment banker, is the only candidate who has announced plans to challenge GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole in next year's general election.

Well, since he's out, there's no need for toe-tapping restroom scandals and denials or emailing page-boys.

That's a good answer he gave. Hope he wins!

I really hope he takes out Dole, she's been an awful senator, but let's be realistic here, an openly gay man in NC has no shot at winning a statewide election.

It'd be a huge statement if he could get elected, it's say something about the tolerance level being more relaxed. If he were running in another state I'd say he has a good chance, but not in NC.

I doubt many in the south want an openly gay senator/political figure being their leader. Unfortunately.

At least he's white, so that would give him a better chance, I guess. I hope he does well in elections. If I lived one state upwards I'd vote for him.

In the NZ Parliament we have something like 7 gays, including 1 in the Conservative (National) party. Until a few months ago we also had a transgender politician

Well, he's a Democrat and most Democrats don't care, but he's in North Carolina so it's hard to tell. Parts of the state are very liberal, and Liddy Dole is increasingly unpopular. I don't know enough about his background and who supports him and how well known he is to know if he can really challenge her. Of course we'll all be better off if people started considering stupidity a bigger liability than being gay

Isn't NC the same state that kept electing Jesse Helms? Poor guy doesn't stand a snowball chance in hell.
