Anna is in her first YEC. Besides Justine, no one in there is playing near their best form, so Anna has a chance to get to the semis.
The money and points are excellent here. This is the place you want to be in early November.

I expect Anna will have a press call Monday or Tuesday to announce her place at Madrid.

GL is right - the money and PR exposure from the YEC is very good. It will help her ranking too: Anna gets 105 points just for turning up! :D

Chakvetadze Qualifies for Madrid

LINZ, Austria - Anna Chakvetadze has become the sixth player to qualify for the singles event at the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, set to take place in Madrid's Recinto Ferial Casa de Campo, November 6-11. The Russian has assured herself of a berth in Madrid with 2626 points on this week's Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships Standings, behind Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams.

This marks the first time the Russian has qualified for the prestigious year-ending event. She is the third newcomer to have qualified for this year's Championships from the six singles players announced to date and is also the sixth player from Russia to crack the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's Top 5 Rankings in the last three years.

"I'm so excited to play in my first Sony Ericsson Championships," Chakvetadze said. "I love the beautiful city of Madrid:hearts: :hearts: :hearts: and I'm hoping to perform very well. This has been an amazing year for me, having reached the Top 5 in the world, and I am looking forward to finishing strongly in Madrid."

"Anna Chakvetadze has been one of the breakthrough stars of 2007," said Larry Scott, Chairman & CEO of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. "Annaís debut at this year's Sony Ericsson Championships further reflects the terrific mix of established names and new faces that will descend on Spain's capital this year."

"With the Sony Ericsson Championships taking place now in less than two weeks, the excitement is continuing to build as we see Anna Chakvetadze, who has had a phenomenal year, be the sixth player to qualify." said Dee Dutta, CVP and Global Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson. "The Sony Ericsson Championships is all about being the very best; it's a week not to be missed and should be placed firmly on everyoneís calendar."

"We are very happy that Chakvetadze has qualified for Madrid," said Tournament Director and Spanish tennis legend Manolo Santana. "She has had an impressive season and we look forward to seeing her compete at her highest level in a few days here."

Chakvetadze is having the best season of her career, having won four singles titles (only world No.1 Justine Henin has claimed more in 2007) at Hobart, 's-Hertogenbosch, Cincinnati and Stanford. She has won over 50 singles matches, reached the semifinals of the US Open and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, in addition to winning over $1 million so far.

The Sony Ericsson Championships is the richest annual women's sporting event in the world. The tournament is the year-ending punctuation to an 11-month global Tour which finally gathers the Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams from the season to battle it out for a share of the $3-million prize purse. Since its inception in 1972, the event has been held in such notable venues as Madison Square Garden, New York City, the Olympiahalle in Munich and The Forum and Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Former singles champions include Tracy Austin, Kim Clijsters, Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini and Serena Williams. The reigning champions are Henin (singles) and Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur (doubles).

I prefer Svetlana to Justine, Jankovic to Ivanovic, Sharapova to Serena.

> Hťnin, Ivanovic, Serena and Venus
> Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Sharapova and Anna

I think this will be the best group for Anna to go in semi. She can beat Jankovic & Ivanovic without problem. Seeing Maria's form, she can beat Sharapova. I am sure she can defeat Kuznetsova too. She just played horribly in USO.
But Anna must regain confidence and her game to do some results in Madrid.

Sony Ericsson Championships Profile: Anna Chakvetadze

MADRID, Spain - This year has seen Anna Chakvetadze emerge as the latest Russian superstar to establish herself in the world's Top 10 and last week she was rewarded for a wonderful season with qualification for the prestigious Sony Ericsson Championships. The elegant young Russian's intelligent game has seen her score wins over several of her Madrid rivals en route to capturing four titles in 2007 and reaching a career-high ranking of No.5.

Chakvetadze made the ideal start to the year with a near-faultless title run in Hobart and she continued this form right through to the end of the season, finishing the season with a highly credible 57-18 win-loss record. In addition to the championship run in Australia, the 20-year-old Muscovite lifted trophies in 's-Hertogenbosch, Cincinnati and Stanford as well embarking on a maiden Grand Slam semifinal run at the US Open.

This year will see Chakvetadze making her bow in the Spanish capital, but despite her lack of experience at the event, she certainly has the ability to go all the way to the title and after a slightly disappointing run in her past few tournaments she will be eager to finish off this breakthrough season in style.

"I'm so excited to play in my first Sony Ericsson Championships," Chakvetadze said. "I love the beautiful city of Madrid and I'm hoping to perform very well. This has been an amazing year for me, having reached the Top 5 in the world, and I am looking forward to finishing strongly in Madrid."

There are no easy draws at the YEC. You have both AO finalists, both FO finalists, both USO finalists.
Anna has to find her best form, so she ends the year confident about 2008.
But each match will be against a very good player.

Red or Yellow?

MADRID, Spain - The eight singles players contesting the Sony Ericsson Championships are in Madrid, but until Saturday morning they didn't know who they'd be playing in the round-robin portion of the $3-million, season-ending event. With just three days to go until the start of proceedings, world No.7 Anna Chakvetadze joined Spanish legend Arantxa SŠnchez-Vicario and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott to conduct the draw.

Each of the players was drawn into one of two Groups, Yellow or Red - in honor of the Spanish flag's colors - and over the first four days (Tuesday through Friday) the players will take on the other three women in their Group. The two best-performed women from each Group will advance to the semifinals - the best-performed player from the Yellow Group plays the No.2 player from the Red Group and vice versa, with the winners squaring off for the $1-million first prize on Sunday afternoon.

Below is a look at the two Group allocations (seedings in parentheses):

YELLOW GROUP
(1) Justine Henin (BEL)
(3) Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
(5) Serena Williams (USA)
(7) Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)

RED GROUP
(2) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)
(4) Ana Ivanovic (SRB)
(6) Maria Sharapova (RUS)
(8) Daniela Hantuchova (SVK)

Unlike the singles event, the doubles competition has a knockout format. The four teams - Cara Black/Liezel Huber, Chan Yung-Jan/Chuang Chia-Jung, Katarina Srebotnik/Ai Sugiyama and Kveta Peschke/Rennae Stubbs - will essentially start the tournament at the semifinal stage, with the winners of Saturday's 'opening round' advancing to Sunday's final.
The doubles draw will be conducted on Thursday night.

Anna for sure got the more difficult of the two draws, however, that may not be a bad thing. If she plays like we know she can, then she could pick up some very good wins and a lot of confidence for next year. If she does lose though she will be losing to some of the very best and hopefully won't feel as bad about it as she would have if she would have been on the easier draw and lost.

I think she will get at least 1 win and maybe 2 if she can play good solid tennis. Anyone in the top 10 can beat anyone on a given day...even Henin...

Best of luck to Anna and get those 1st serves in!!!! :D

I'm quite pleased with the way Anna played in the second set.

She made a few too many errors particularly going for the backhand down the line as ES commentators pointed out. Justine was making some errors too. But this is still the best Anna's done against Justine.

I think it bodes well for Anna's other matches. Once she's relaxed she looks like she's in better form than for most of the European indoors recently.

But please, cut down on the UEs!!!!!

.. one of her best sets ever that second one vs Henin. :worship: Ony not really friendly of her to just walk away on court when they were interviewing Justine . She played some good games, but some games, she made 2 or 3 ue's on her first or second shot.
She did well to hold 3 straight times to force the tb. But she didn't force Justine to play well at 34, 45 or 56.
She has to continue to hold her serve.

In my eyes, she's also one of the few "chosen ones" who have the ability to figure Justine's game out rather quickly...
You could spot that she played a lot of long strokes, because the expectancy of Justine making a foul in the return (mainly netball)
is a lot bigger that way. AND she did. Anyhow, i really like that girl's style ...no, i actually like the whole package .

I saw Anna playing live yesterday!!! Initially many nerves and then played very well. Was almost always ahead in the 2nd set and the speed and depth of Anna blows were much more powerful than those of Justine. She had the opportunity to 3-0 in the 2nd set but she played badly in this game. Anna rest to win the set with 5-4 and 6-5 though there was no option. In the Tie-break very equaled a backhand to the net gave him the 5-3 to Justine and she lost.

She is much higher in person and played with the pink dress I am very happy. My day of Super Tennis ended when Masha won, then I went with my parents and I did not see the third. I have photos though of high quality!!!

I am convinced that Anna can beat Serena, today we will see, C'mon Anna

It is to bad that Serena had to retire. :( Can't wait to get home tonight so I can watch the actual match.

Anna started off a little rough (okay really rough) at the start of the Henin match, but I was really proud of the way she didn't just give up. Taking the world number 1 to a tiebreaker and basically only losing 1 point on her own serve in the tiebreak was a very good sign in my opinion.

Hope she can play like that second set (or better) against Jankovic tomorrow. :)

Anna seemed to like that song of Kanye West ft. Daft Punk - Stronger yesterday against Henin, it's
maybe of Kanye's words "Now that that don't kill me, can only make me stronger", maybe she
got a mental boost from it and was it that what made her play such an excellent second set ;)

This has been a real up and down tournament for me. On one hand I had Anna who I felt would have a really tough fight into the semi's as her group is quite arguably the toughest group, and on the other hand I had Daniela who was coming off of a tournament win in Linz and in the easier group. With Daniela I have watched her play some good tennis and some really ugly tennis in the YEC and her result of two losses and no wins so far has made me a bit sad, but she has been competitive and for that I'm glad. With Anna I have seen her play the worst of sets 0-6 against Jankovic and 1-6 against Henin, however, I have also been able to witness her play some great tennis in the set that went to tie break against Henin and with the set against Serena and her 1st and 3rd set against Jankovic.

That's why they play the matches and anything can happen. I'm so happy for Anna's results and I wish her the best of luck in the semi's and God willing the finals. To me it really doesn't matter who the opponent is as if she plays like she did against Henin in the 3rd set she should have a very good chance to beat either Ivanovic or Sharpova. Speaking of those two, they should have a really good match today.

Kick some booty Anna and make us all even more proud of you then we already are!!! :D

It's the end of a great year, but to beat the elite, Anna has to be more accurate on the big points.

Anna had an outstandung year in 2007. She got to the next level of women's tennis and in the coming years we get to find out if can get to the top level of women's tennis. But Anna seems to struggle late in big tournaments against top players. Is it fair to say that?

Anna had a great year. Now she has to try to keep improving.
The USO SF was a great result. If she can play her best on those days, she can move even closer to #1.
I don't know the exact rankings. I think Anna will be #6. maria just passed her by 20 points.

The SF here in Madrid is a nice way to end this Season.
Anna still don't play her best in the more important Matches, we see if in 2008 this can happen and so Anna can increase ranking and important wins, I wait for the next step to the top of this sport! :)

Anna  she'd 0/5 break points won, and 1/5 Break points saved, Anna still has a debt in this kind of matches, But she close the 2007 in good form, I hope the next year she can confirm and improve her level....

I didn't see the match but I heard on Eurosport that Maria was in devastating form again. I wish the result was closer.

Anna's got a lot to be proud of though. She's capped off the year very nicely with her semi at the YEC. :worship:

Still plenty to do in the off-season. To stay at the top in this game you have to be continually improving.

Anna finishes as year-end #6 ahead of both Venus and Serena. Maria Sharapova overtook her by virtue of winning the semi today.

Anna finished her year in the YEC semis, losing to Sharapova. If Maria doesn't win the final, she finishes 21 points ahead of Anna, who will be #6 next week.
Maria has to defend finalist points in Melbourne, so Anna can get back into the top 5 then.

But I wonder if Anna can sneak into a 50K and get 22 points, if Maria doesn't win the final.

Anna has to start behaving more professionally.
She should have been warned for racquet abuse.
All that negative gestures only help her opponent.

Don't kid yourself...Anna is not 21 points behind Maria.
Based on their head-to-head matches, Maria might as well be 1,000 points ahead of Anna.
Its not even close...and Maria knows it.

Based on h2h, Anna is 6-2 with Jankovic, but 0-6 vs Sharapova. But Jankovic is ranked ahead of Sharapova.
She's so close to Sharapova, that if Justine wins, Anna should play a 50k and get those 22 points. Finish year end top 5. If it's within the rules for a #6 to play a 50K.

I think Anna should go home and take a nice vacation then prepare for the next season instead of playing a 50K, quite ridiculous. What's the big difference about being #5 or #6?

Of course, it won't happen. But finishing the year in the top 5 is a goal of Anna's.

 GL, you are too much! I'm sure Anna is quite satisfied to finish her season here.

You're talking about her entering a 50k. You know I'm pretty sure she'll be Gold Exempt next year. Depending on where she is on the list she won't even be allowed in Tier IV's. That's how it works isn't it? So she might not be allowed to defend her Hobart title even if she wants to.

Anna needs a nice vacation and then some good positive work to improve elements of her game that will make her more competitive with the Top 5.

It was a good tournament and a great year for Anna! She just couldn't get a look at Maria's serve on any of those break points. I'm looking forward to seeing what Anna does in 08!

I know this is a bit late but here's Anna's interview transcript from Monday before she'd played her matches. She talks a bit about next year, her hair and shopping!

Sony Ericsson All-Access Hour
Date: 5th November 2007

Q. You will probably be the most improved player of the year. How pleasing is that for you to be here?
A. Iím very excited to be here. I worked a lot this year to be here. Being here is a pleasure the best eight players in the world. This season was the best for me, I think, as you said as well, because I had my highest ranking and I won four titles. So, Iím pleased but of course I want to work more, to improve more as well.

Q. Remember that in Moscow nobody expected you to win in a shell, because so many Russian players... but you did it. Is your life a surprise? Perhaps you can make it here or you come as a newcomer? What is your mentality?
A. I think itís a little bit different story here because the tournament is much tougher. As you said, nobody expected me to win. Maybe some of the players didnít really think that I was going to beat them. Thatís why maybe they were a little bit relaxed on court. Thatís why I won. But here all players know how Iím playing and I know how they are playing as well. So, we know each other very well already. Iíve been on tour for 2/3 years so we know all the players and I know all the players very well. So, itís a different story. The tournament is much tougher but Iíll try to do my best.

Q. Ana Ivanovic just said that sheís been working in the mental part, the control of emotions because she got to the final in Paris and she was so nervous. Do you have this problem? Are you working on that?
A. You know, when I was playing under 14 I was very nervous and people who might not have seen me play at that time may think that Iím still not at control, but compared to that time Iím much more in control. Of course, Iím working on it. I want to improve on this part of my game as well.

Q. Does the indoor court suit you? Can you play any surface? Because youíve won on several surfaces?
A. I donít think that clay is my favourite surface but here I like the surface. Itís not that fast, is little slow. So, I like it and I hope that Iíll do well here.

Q. Justine talked a little bit about you. She said that you distribute your game very well, that youíre very intelligent on the court. Do you agree with that?
A. I cannot disagree with Justine. Yeah, Iím playing my first match with her and I think is a very tough first round for me. I think I have a very tough group but what can we do. I have to play and show my best tennis here in the last tournament. I wish I will even improve here compared to the last 3 weeks which I played indoor season.

Q. What will you have to do to beat her? Whatís the main thing you do?
A. Itís very tough to say because twice I was very easily defeated. Hopefully, this time I will play better than the last time I played against her. I just need to stay more concentrated, to keep playing aggressive because if youíre not playing aggressive against Justine I think is very tough to win.

Q. You used to play doubles with Elena Vesnina but now you separated your career so are you still in touch?
A. Yes, of course we are still in touch. I will see her in one week. We are going to have some meetings in Moscow. We are still good friends but we are not playing doubles together because she wanted to play with Likhovtseva this year and I decided to concentrate more on my singles. Iíve played just a few tournaments with Azarenka and I think next year Iíll play with Isvenoyava (phonetic transcription) for the Olympics. Weīll see how it goes and if it goes well maybe weíll go to the Olympics as well.

Q. You play Justine in the 1st match. Maybe thatís an advantage because for both of you is the 1st match of the tournament? Maybe is better for you to play immediately against her?
A. You never know with these things. It also depends on how it goes. For me itís better to play Justine in the 1st round because as you said she didnít play any matches but, on the other hand, I also didnít play matches. So, we will see how it goes and I think it will be a very interesting match.

Q. Do you follow any ritual before a match or do you have any superstition?
A. Iím not really a superstition person but before very match Iím always listening to my Ipod, my music and just trying to prepare myself. I donít really like to talk too much before I go to play. I just like to sit somewhere in the corner and stay concentrated for my match, just keep the energy for the court.

Q. What kind of music do you prefer?
A. It depends on the mood. Sometimes fast, like... maybe R&B but it depends. Itís the mood thing I think.

Q. What do you do in your spare time during a tournament?
A. During the tournaments I usually go home because I always want to be with my family and friends of course it is always nice to have some time off. My hobby, I think is shopping, I have said it a lot of time in my interviews.

Q. Do you like any sport apart from tennis
A. Yeah football

Q. Do you practice it?
A. A little bit. My brother actually is a little soccer player. He is just 9 years old, he has just started to play so he wants to improve. My dad is an ex-soccer player as well so I do like to watch it and I play a little bit because we have a little garden in our house.

Q. How is your relationship with the other eight?
A. Its good. We see each other every week and we keep in touch sometimes. Friendly relations because itís our work to be on the tournaments every week and we see the same faces all the time. I am not saying that I keep in touch with all the eight players but with Svetlana and with most of the Russian girls we keep in touch a lot.

Q. You have the reputation on the tour as being the player with the most interest in fashion. Is it only for shopping or are you interested in designing or something?
A. I do like to design stuff but usually for models and for people .. I better like shopping because I like to buy everything for myself. Thatís how I am.

Q. How did you prepare for this tournament because the last indoor tournaments were not so good for you so did you have time to regroup and refocus on this tournament?
A. I have ten days to practice and I did practiced in Moscow with my hitting partner and with my fitness coach so as I said, hopefully I will play better than I played in those few tournaments because as you said the indoor season wasnít that great for me but I hope I will get through and we will play better here.

Q. Your results at the indoor season were not as good. Were you a little bit tired or a little bit relaxed after winning the Fed Cup?
A. Yes, Itís actually started after the Fed Cup win but I think you canít play all the year at 100%, its very tough. Even Federer losing now there two tournaments so for me of course itís tough and I felt a little bit tired but for this tournament I hope that I will get some extra energy because this is the last tournament and very important one.

Q. You are also trained father Djambuli, how do you develop the relationship? Is it difficult?
A. Heís not really my coach, he just helps me outside the court a little bit and he is not all them time telling me sometimes I tell with my mom as well so all my family is here with my little brother but I cannot say that my father is coaching me he is just helping me a bit. Itís more of a psychology thing because when we have bad days itís very important that we have someone for the team and I think parents are the best people who can help and I am in great relations with my parents. Because of them I am playing tennis and I am playing so well like I am now and it will be very tough without their help.

Q. Do you find it uncomfortable to play with such a long hair?
A. Once when I played in Stanford it got stuck on the racket but it was just one time. I played my back and it just got stuck in the racket. I think I am going to cut it a little bit after Madrid because I cut it every year but before the last tournament I didnít want to cut it Ė its a little superstition. But just a little bit, I donít want to have short hair because I am used to having long hair since I was 8 or 9. It used to be even longer but I get used to it and for me it is comfortable.

Q. Are you still playing the piano?
A. No, not anymore. Itís still in my house. For 10 years I didnít touch it because I didnít like it when I was growing up and its very boring and I think when a kid doesnít like something the after he grows up he still doesnít like it. I wish I will play; I like to listen to classic music but not playing.

Q. You used to play classical music?
A. Yes.

Q. Did the Martina Hingis case surprise you or do you think these are things that can happen in tennis?
A. Itís a tough question but I think nothing has been proved for 100%. I support the anti-doping programme as well but Martina is a great champion and I hope she will get through that and as I said itís still not proven 100%.

Anna played really well I thought in the semi-final vs Sharapova, but Sharapova was just on fire the past couple of matches. Anna lost that first set 2-6 and only had 5 unforced errors for the entire set. Maria had some of the best tennis I have seen her play since the 2006 US Open. Every time Anna got a break point chance POW huge serves and shots that it is doubtful anyone could have returned. I was also proud of how Anna handled herself. Yes, she did smack the ol' racket on the ground a few times, but she seemed to quickly regain her composure (I think I might have smacked my racket too, play some great tennis and still getting blown away really sucks).

I'm proud of the year Anna had and her results in the YEC. She never gave up and she showed that she deserved to be there right down to the last point. Granted the 1st serve could have been better, but other than that I thought she played really well.

Congrats on this year and look forward to next season!!! :)
