Canada Drops Opener Against Great Britain
In a section which featured world #1 Larisa Ferrer, Defending Hopman Cup Champion and Munich winner Regla Torres, and 2001 Aus Open finalist Monica de la Cal, Canada's Eva Sorrenta along with Sebastien Lareau started off day 1 action in a losing battle to the top seeded British squad of Ferrer and Moore.
Q: Eva, you started off well, big win over Ferrer and then couldn't keep up the momentum, what happened?
A: Definetly experience played a factor. This is Sebastien's first time playing with myself or at Hopman Cup, while the other teams I think have some more experience so despite beeing seeded I do feel like a bit of an underdog against such a tough field.
Q: What are your expectations here?
A: Just to get some matches in really. I've been known to start the year slow, and it's no secret so I just want to get better preparation for when the tour matches get under way. The singles win was nice, but realistically I know that I didn't play my best tennis, and I think Larisa maybe was not at her very best either. She made a few errors at crucial points, and I was able to take advantage of that.
Q: What's more important to you at this point? Winning the ties, or winning your singles matches?
A: Umm, no preference, Sebastien and I both came in just wanting matches, and in all honesty not really expecting too too much. If we go far that's great, but it's not the end of the world if we faulter a bit here. I care far more about the tour events where it's a matter of points. Here I think I can have a chance to just test my game, go for some things during my matches, more risks, and assess where my level of play is at heading into Melbourne.
Q: What do you hope to happen this season towards the beginning.
A: Win matches! (laughs). Last year was a real dosaster, I didn't get into a good feel of my level until late last year which was unfortunate, and it shows why I am not ranked at number 3 right now. Hopefully I can get into the mix of things early on, and gain some match confidence so that I can gain some points where I have my chances.
Q: Thanks Eva.

JAHFSON DEFEATS SARILE AGAIN
Madonika Diva Jahfson played her first match of the 2002 season when she defeated Lindsay Anne Sarile easily, 7-5 6-3! The two have played quite a few times since they both joined the tour in July. Jahfson has won all meetings routinely.
"I am very excited about the upcoming season and I must say I was on top of my game defeating Sarile. It was an easy victory and I feel great! To tell you the truth I tanked the mixed doubles because I did not feel like playing. I don't give a shit whether Morrocco does good or not...all I care about is how I do in singles. Plus Harry Cock sucks anyway...now isn't that ironic!"

World number 2, Sabine Graf and her friend Stefan Kiffer played a perfect tie against Belgium's team Brenda Van Haak and Christoph Rochus. Graf is showing a great performance in Perth, Van Haak lost this match in two sets.
Stefan Kiffer, who lost his first match against Mark Philipoussis, but today he was in a better shape. Although he lost the second set 6-0, Kiffer wanted to win this match.
The mixed was a thriller. Graf/Kiffer, US Open 2000 finalists, saved 5 matchpoints in second set. Stefan helped his girl-friend Sabine several times. At the end the two German players were happy.
After losing the first tie against homecountry Australia, Germany is second in this group. Tomorrow Graf and Kiffer will face the newcomer Philipines.

HOPMAN CUP 2002 -FINAL: GREAT BRITAIN VS. GERMANY-
Today, Sabine Graf and Stefan Kiffer celebrate a victory over the Philippines. Graf, Wimbledon Champion 2001, won her match against Clarissa Fernandez in two sets. Sanchez from Philippines was in a better shape, he defeated German Kiffer in three sets. In the mixed the German pair had to play their best tennis to beat Fernandez/Sanchez in
the supertiebreak of the final set. After this match Belgium destroyed Australia with 3-0 with
this unexpected victory, Germany reached the final of Hopman Cup 2002. Germany will face Great
Britain. Last year, Coare/Coare from Great Britain defeated Graf/Kiffer 3-0. Now Germany will
play against top seeded team Ferrer and Moore. Ferrer, world number one and her mixed partner
Moore are the favourites in this tie. Hope we will see a great final of this wonderful FWTT Hopman
Cup 2002.
Well done Great Britain for getting to the final shame they lost!

Cuba especially Regla Torres is very disappointed to have lost the Hopman Cup. This represents a very special tournament for Regla who first had her taste of tournament victory here. However, she would like to Congratulate Germany on a terrific win, to Sabine and Stefan!

----GERMANY WON HOPMAN CUP 2002----
Interview between Sabine Graf and Stefan Kiffer (Ger)
Q: Congrats, Sabine and Stefan, for winning this competition. Sabine, you jumped from your seat after Stefan's matchpoint. Is this tournament something special for you or just another title in your carreer???
Graf: Yes, of course this is a special one. Germany won Fed Cup and Davis Cup and this is the famous Hopman Cup. So first of all, I am proud to win this competition for my country and I like to play mixed.
Kiffer: You are not proud to play with me??? (smiles)
Graf: Oh, sorry, of course, without Stefan Germany would not have this cup.
Q: Stefan, are you happy and satisfied with your performance here in Australia???
Kiffer: Well...I think I am not happy with my matches. I had several chances to beat Philipoussis in the first tie and against Robredo I did not play my best tennis. But today I could show, that I am not a bad player.
Graf: You are a great player!!!
Q: Sabine, last year, you and Stefan played Hopman Cup, too. But you lost against Cuba and Great Britain. This year Germany is winner. Please tell me about this new situation.
Graf: Puhh, what a question. We improved our tennis. But the other nations are strong, too. The Philippines for example is a great team, they have the opportuneties to become one of best tennisteams. Australia with Jelena and Mark defeated us, so we were not unbeatable this year, too.
Q: Yes, but you played perfect singles matches. You did not lose a set.
Graf: Ok, that's right. This was a wonderful week for me. To beat Larissa is something special, because she is number 1.
Q: You were US Open 2000 mixed doubles runner-up against Ferrer/Moore. Now you lost again. What do you think of this team???
Kiffer: Ferrer and Moore in mixed doubles are the best in the world. They are playing perfect. I think they did not make an unforced error.
Graf: ...and in our team....Stefan makes the unforced errors.
Kiffer: I am human. (smiles)
Q: Last question...there are rumours about a marriage between Sabine and you...is this right, Stefan???
Kiffer: A marriage??? No bad...
Graf: This is just a rumour. By the way I am NOT pregnant.(laughs)
Q: So no marriage???
Graf: No comment!!!
Q: Ok, thanks for your time and good luck in 2002.
