Our first tournament of the year is an exhibtion. This exhibition shall be held on the small island of Singapore, a convenient stop for players from Europe, Asia, North and South America before they head over to Austrialia for the Australian Hardcourt season.

The venue for this exhibition is next to sea, where players can relax enjoying the sea breeze if they wish to, like everyone should during an exhibition. BIG MATCHES AT 2001 WMTA CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION
The first event of the WMTA Tour will already start with some nerve-cracking first round matches.

The serve-and-volley Aussie could have an advantage on Deco Turf, but Ferrero has already proved himself by winning Dubai earlier this year. Prediction: Rafter in three sets
http://www.emol.com/noticias/deportes/tenis/usopen2001/favoritos/kafelnikov.jpghttp://www.emol.com/noticias/deportes/tenis/usopen2001/favoritos/agassi.jpg
YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV vs. ANDRE AGASSI
Andre Agassi, who recently became a parent after the birth of his son Jaden Gil Agassi, whose mother is one the biggest female tennis players Steffi Graf, will face Yevgeny Kafelnikov from Russia, who is already father of two kids.
Both players do very well at this surface and there is no favourite. Prediction: Kafelnikov in three sets.
http://www.emol.com/noticias/deportes/tenis/usopen2001/favoritos/corretja.jpghttp://www.emol.com/noticias/deportes/tenis/usopen2001/favoritos/hewitt.jpg
LLEYTON HEWITT vs. ALEX CORRETJA
After winning both US Open and Tennis Masters Cup, Lleyton Hewitt could be considered the main favourite for this battle. But Corretja, a real fighter, can also dominate on harder courts than his "home" clay, like he did in 2000 Indian Wells. At the end. Personally, I think Hewitt is the most confident player of the moment and he oust Correjta in straight sets.

Marcelo, don't you think it was rather rude of you to keep sitting in the chair everytime Marat was serving in the tie-breaker?
Nope, I think it was rude of Marat to keep bouncing the ball like 20 times or so before serving, I just thought I'd chill until he was actually going to serve
You didn't seem to put up much of a fight in the end, why?
I'm just playing here for practice, Marat took this match too serious, he kept running around screaming with his fist clenched.
Well don't you think he was just getting himself pumped up?
What I think is he could have left his Lleyton Hewitt act at home, this was an exhibition, not the U.S.Open final.
So if this was the U.S. Open final, do you think you could have beaten Marat?
So how do you think your doubles partner James Blake will fare against Marat?
Blake is going to crush Marat, just like he did Grosjean
You sound like you don't care for Marat, do you dislike Marat?
Nope, just answering your dumb questions while I pack up my bag
Well Marcelo, how do you feel about your game now......Marcelo......where are you goi..

Ivanisevic defeats Gambill in Thriller
http://espn.go.com/media/ten/2001/0831/photo/a_goran_i.jpg

Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia won a tight three set match over Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States to advance to the second round of the WMTA Christmas Exhibition.
In the first set, neither player dropped serve and so it was decided in the tiebreak which was hilighted by an amazing diving volley by the fiery Croat after a great get by Gambill. Ivanisevic went on the win the tiebreak without losing a point.
The second set featured the bad Goran. A line dispute in the second game led to Ivanisevic breaking his raquet and giving Gambill break point on which Goran double faulted. Gambill put the set away easily 6-3.
Gambill's streak continued into the third set and he served for the match at 5-4, but was unable to convert. Once again, Ivanisevic dominated the tiebreaker, winning it 7-2.
Next up for Goran is Magnus Norman of Sweden who rallied to beat Hicham Arazi 1-6 7-6(0) 6-2.
"I think that if I play the way I did today, I should be able to win tomorrow" said the Croat after his 2 hour, 38 minute first round match.

After a hard fought loss yesterday with Marat Safin in the doubles match, Lapentti finally wins a match in the WMTA Christmas exhibition tournament singles second round . It took him just 2 straight sets 6:4, 6:0 to storm into the quarters. " I'm getting into the game slowly. It was really hard to concentrate on the first set considering its my first match in singles for this year." Lapentti pass the first due to a Walk Over of his opponent. This was exactly his first match of this season in singles. " When I finally got my game, I never gave him a chance to get back in the second set." lapennti said in an interview after the match.
Lapentti is schedule to meet Goran Ivanisevic, Wimbledon champion last year. " I hope I can do the same as today against such a great player like him, but I'm confident enough I can do it. Lapentti pertaining to Goran.

http://archive.sportserver.com/newsroom/ap/oth/2001/oth/ten/arts/083101/ten04868.jpeg
American James Blake used his improved serve and volley game to defeat Marat Safin of Russia 6-2, 6-3
Your game has really improved, what have you done James?
Well I have been working on my backhand, I can actually do some damage with it now (grins). I just decided that from now on my game is going to be all about putting pressure on the other guy. I will be coming in and attacking serve every oppurtunity.
Do you think this new gamepaln will cause you to have a few more losses before you master it?
Possibly, but I can deal with a loss better if I am being agressive, but not by me being passive and trying to beat guys like Bas and Marat from the baseline.

You are refering to Grosjean as Bas? are you guys friends?
Bas is cool people, we always speak when we see each other so yeah, I guess so.

Sebastien Grosjean and Marat Safin are tough players, how did you defeat them?
They are tough, very solid players. I don't know (shrugs), it just seems like after I won that first set from Bas, my serve and volley game came alive , and it had to because Bas and Marat have great passing shots.

Rios said you were going to beat Safin easily, actually he said you were going to crush Safin, now how'd he know that?
He couldn't have known that because I didn't (laughs), the match was a lot tougher than the score, but of course Rios would say that, he's my doubles partner so he's gotta have my back (laughs).

Yes he is your doubles partner, how did that come to be?
Well, we have the same agent and clothing contract with Nike, and they thought it would be a good idea. We will play together until after the French, then decide if we want to continue or not.

So next up for you is Max Mirnyi, how do you see that match going?
Its going to be very different than the other two matches because Max is a serve and volley player like me. We will both be cracking big serves and racing to the net to put the volley away (grins) ....... Oh man, its gonna be ON!

Well goodluck for the rest of the tournament James.
Yeah thanks man, good lookin out!
James Blake has left behind his painful lost at the 2001 US Open and trained really hard. His physical conditioning has improved drastically, partly accounting for his fine performance. He has just about handed every opponent in sight with a straight set lost, in singles and doubles. He has stormed into both singles and doubles semis now. How far can this young talent go?
French man Arnaud Clement has reached the semis in singles, though he has lost to the playboy team of Jan Michael Gambill and Andre Agassi in doubles. Clement always seems to play well near the start of of the season, peaking at the Australian Open, like in 2001 when he reached the finals. This is a good sign for Clement as he is playing well again. Will Clement peak soon and take the Australian Open crown? Only time will tell.
Nicolas Lapentti has stormed into the semis of this tournament, and like James Blake, is just absolutely on fire. He just defeats everyone in straight sets. He however, has not done so well in doubles. But what is there to complain about when one has reached the semis of this tough exhibition so easily.
Former Wimbledon champion has been out of form in recent years, but he has apparently found his form again. He has reached his first semi-finals in ages. People will be looking forward to see him put his injury behind him and recover fully. Though this surface may not be his favourite, he is a dangerous player whenever he is on form.
Dec 26th, 2001, 04:37 AM
Arnaud is very happy about is win today. He is also happy of being one of the top 4 seeds in AUS OPEN.

Ecuadors number one player Nicholas Lapentti is riding high with his win over Goran Ivanisevich in just 54 mins with 2 straight sets victory 6:3 6:1. Lapentti sruggles in his first match here in Singapore via a loss in a doubles match with Marat Safin but was able to find his game in the second round and quarter finals round. Lapentti's solid groundstokes and strong first serves was the main key in his victory over Goran." I served well today and my returns are great. Against a player like Goran, you have to be 100 % with your return" lapentti said after the match. Goran's serve was good in the match but Lapentti's solid and down the line returns denies Goran's service weapon. " I pretty disappointed with my groundstrokes but I still have more time to prepare for Australia" Gorans quote in his loss in the quarters.

What a joy for me to comeback from Christmas vacation to find out that Richard has made his way into the semis!
Krajicek beats Sampras to reach semis!
In the past three days, Richard Krajicek has defeated former French Open champion Carlos Moya, world #1 Lleyton Hewitt and 13 time grand slam champion Pete Sampras. Krajicek had this to say " I have been injured for so long I thought about retiring, but I am glad I didn't because its really good to know that my game can still beat top players". we will have to see if Krajicek can continue his winning ways against Nicolas Lapennti, who has been winning with ease.
I think we won!Cos the points we sent would let us loose the first set 6-0!

FLL...your doubles points are obtained by combining your Clement's and Max's singles points as you didn't send in specific doubles points. So it is very possible that such a result occured. I have double checked everything. The results are right.

Double Trouble for Blake
Reuters
James Blake, a former Harvard student, has saved his spot today at both singles and doubles semifinals on Singapore Christmas Exhibition.
Blake, who turns 22 on Dec. 28th, has upset many players with his ability, and specially the fans, with the short time that his matches would take to finish.
In the first match of the Centre Court, Blake defeated Max Mirnyi, the top seed, from Belarus, in a 6-0 7-6(2) win. Mirnyi showed many signs of pain on his back, but the way the American played was superb for The Beast.
Later, Blake and the polemic Marcelo Rios from Chile topped Magnus Norman and Nicolas Escude, in another straight-set win. Blake and Rios won their first match 7-5 6-3, and this second was just the opposite: 6-3 7-5.
With these wins, Blake has yet to drop a set in the tournament, and has already booked a seed for the next WMTA tournament.
"I think I'm on an excellent run, and I'm feeling very well on the court, specially physically. I haven't felt tired at all in all my matches. I've been working very hard on this, and finally the results are coming."
James Blake will face Arnaud Clement on the singles semifinal, who survived a three-set-all-French battle against Nicolas Escude. Later, he will play doubles with Rios against Roger Federer, from Switzerland, and Nicolas Kiefer, from Germany.
James Blake and Marcelo Rios have reached the mens doubles final without the loss of a set, Blake has also reached the mens singles final, also without the loss of a set. Marcelo Rios turned 26 today, so the doubles win was a great gift. Blake will turn 22 on Friday Dec 28th. Blake and Rios combined to defeat the team of Roger Federer and Nicolas Kiefer 6-0, 7-6(6). The pair will take on Jan-Micael Gambill and Andre Agassi in the final. Blake scored another routine victory in the mens singles semifinals when he defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-3. Blake will take on Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti in the mens final, Lapentti has also been very impressive in not losing a set as well. Lapentti put and end to the run of Richard Krajicek witha 7-6(6), 6-0 win. This will be a final between the two hottest singles playes on the tour, looks like we will be in for a treat.

lol... both finals are going to be really close. They both have coin flips!!
Once again, Nicholas Lapentti of Ecuador is continously shining on the WMTA Christmas Exhibition in Singapore. After a bad performance last year , this top netter of Ecuador is promised to do some damage the year coming. He struggles in the first set winning it with a good cross court return in the tie breaker against Richard and storming into the second set leaving no chance for Richard to score a single game. " It was a wonderful that all my hardworks and training are being rewarded in this tournament and I hope I get going unto the end." Lapennti's comment with his solid performance today. His next opponent is james Blake who is also a big surprised in this tournament beating some of the finest players in the ATP. " Well, I'm ready and I feel no more rustiness going into the final match." said Lapentti.
Arnaud would like to congratulate James for a fabulous tournament and an impressive win. James served very well today; Arnaud only had 1 break point and James broke once in the first and once in the second.
Good match James

Whether you can kiss that depends on your sex Conchita94... the pretty boys are rather different.
Gambill only takes males, as for the rest, we'll leave that up to your imagination.

WMTA Press - Reuters
Red hot tennis star James Blake dominated once again on his match and breezed past Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 6-0 7-6. Nicolas Lapentti, on the other hand, also breezed past his opponent, Netherland's Richard Krajicek, 7-6 6-0, in another convincing win.
Both players have yet to lose a set in this tournament, and if we take a look on their results, Blake would have an advantage on Lapentti, but since it's a final match, it's very difficult to predict.
James Blake
1st R - James Blake df Sebastian Grojean 7-6(2) 6-0
2nd R - James Blake df Marat Safin 6-2 6-3
QF - James Blake df Max Mirnyi 6-0 7-6(2)
SF - James Blake df Arnaud Clement 6-3 6-3

The doubles tournament is also getting warmer than ever. The final will be played by James Blake and Marcelo Rios against Jan-Michael Gambill and Andre Agassi.
Right before the start of the tournament, Gambill came out of the closet and some people say he was flirting with Agassi, who recently became a parent. Now that Gambill has already assumed his sexuality, the controversy is on Agassi's side. Besides this *or not*, Gambill and Agassi form an excellent doubles pair and they defeated Corretja and Kuerten 0-6 6-1 6-3 on a very weird match. Blake and Rios, once again, straight-setted their opponents, on 6-0 7-6 win.
The winners and runners-up of singles and doubles events will be seeded 1st and 2nd, respectively, at Qatar Open, which will start next week. The finals will be decided in a few hours.

Singles Finals
James Blake df Nicolas Lapentti 7-6(9) 6-7(2) 7-6(2)
American James Blake looks relieved after finally winning a matchpoint in the finals against Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador. Lapentti is then shown later leaving the court after his disappointing loss, Blake won the match 7-6(9) 6-7(2) 7-6(2). The doubles final was not so lucky for Blake as he and Marcelo Rios lost to Andre Agassi and Jan-Michael Gambill 0-6 7-6(4) 6-0.
In a thrilling 3 set final, Jame Blake toppled South American, Nicolas Lapentti for the singles crown. The match took a whopping 3 hours and 52 minutes, with neither player conceding their serves in the first 2 sets. The first 2 sets were decided by tiebreaks with James taking the first one in amazing fashion. He served an ace to close out the first set after facing 2 set points himself, when he was down 5-6 and 6-7 in the tiebreaks. He fought back and promptly closed out the set with an ace to seal the set 7-6(7).
In the second set, Nicolas Lapentti attempted to break the James serve on various occassions, but just came of short every time. He didn't face a single break points in this set however, as he was serving bombs at Blake. He took the tiebreak easily 7-2, with his big serve carrying him through.
In the final set, Nicolas looked to have the advantage with his momentum from winning the second set. He broke early to lead 2-0. Soon, he was serving for the match at 5-3 but James showing some amazing play from the baseline broke Nicolas, and held to level the set at 5-5. Nicolas looked extremely disheartened by this turn of events. Nicolas however steadied himself and held serve to lead 6-5. James held serve without a problem though, he blew through the tie break against a tired looking Nicolas easily.
In other finals howver, James was still on fire, at least in the first set. Blake and Rios, in an amazing display of volleys and doubles play, ran away with the set 6-0.
The second set was a far tighter set. Agassi and Gambill got their act together. They played from the baseline and the midcourt, both blasting their groundstrokes accurately with venom. The duo demonstrated perfect chemistry, seemingly knowing what to do at each moment. Their chemistry held strong as they took the set 7-6.
In the end it was Gambill and Agassi with their superior conditioning that took the deciding set 6-0 easily. It seems that the playboy can play after all, with the right partner that is.
