Impressive first two rounds

Thanks for the info BTW! I checked the figures, and her junior record has been pretty good with lots of QF and SF finishes...anyway, is she concentrating on juniors for this year?

TheBoiledEgg
Jul 17th, 2002, 04:34 PM
pretty much so
this event is only her 2nd ITF event of the year

Wish she played a little more than just 2-3 events

Eugenia! A thread dedicated to her!

Eggy, is there a difference in Eugenia and Evgenia besides the pronunciation? I've seen where her names have been spelled both ways. I personally like Eugenia more, so......:p

Nina_rus
Nov 5th, 2002, 07:06 AM
You can also write Yevgenia (it's the same name as Kafelnikov, only the female ending), it doesn't matter in English. There is a strict spelling in Russian though

it sounds like Evgenia though

saw her practice today :) congratulated her too :)

She hits the ball extremely hard, well from both sides, I'd say the backhand is a bit better, she's very quick, has a good head, she didn't volley perfectly today, pretty defensivly but did hit a few great winners :)

bad loss after she qualified. she won her qualifying matches in fine style defeating kambic the 8th seed 6-0 6-1 then went on to beat kilsdonk the 10th seed 6-4 6-2. eugenia herself wasn't seeded for the qualies but managed to beat 2 seeds comfortably.

her match-up in the main draw was against unseeded voina and eugenia lost 6-2 7-6. this event was the buchen 10k and i thought that eugenia would win this event.

hope she does better in her next event.

good win. laurendon has been on the rise this year. i'm hoping eugenia will win this event and go on to bigger tournaments like $50k's. if she wants to catch up to her fellow countrywomen then she needs to start playing better players to get herself up to their level.

eugenia? she's done this sort of thing a couple of times, winning her matches easily then suddenly losing to a player that she can easily beat. i think she is ready for the wta tour, not full time but to get some matches under her belt and to see the level of play in those events. she really needs to catch up to safina, douchevina and sharapova.

Nina :wavey: That's very good to have you esp. because you're from Moscow, and knowing what's going on in Moscow. Yeah, Moscow has become a tennis town. I bet percentually in women's tennis, most are players from Moscow. You're better than the Internet search, because I couldn't find out anything new about what's going on nowadays at the big Spartak Tennis Club. Only the names of Kournikova, Safin, Dementieva and hardly Myskina were given.

well, first he had an argument with her sponsors, and then with her coach. He wanted to travel with Zhenya, which meant they had to pay everything for him as well, as he doesn't have a job, the sponsors dissagreed as they thought it had a bad effect on her game and on her state of mind, he got mad, locked Zhenya in her room for several days, took her mobile phone, so she couldn't contact anyone, took her from our club.I don't really know what was the purpose of that. She's now moving from club to club without a decent coach, don't know what the situation with the sponsors is...

Still a great week for Zhenya. Onward and upward -

Linetskaya, a 17-year-old from Moscow, will be playing in her third final in the last four weeks. She won last week's $25,000 clay court event at Jackson, Miss., and reached the final at a $50,000 event on hardcourts at Orange, Calif. In between, she made the semifinals of a $25,000 event in Redding, Calif.

Linetskaya was pushed to the brink by Cargill, and admitted her game wasn't as sharp as it could have been.

"I could have played at a much higher level," Linetskaya said. "I didn't play terrible, but I was just hitting too much on everything."

The two players traded howitzer shots from the baseline, and the match was as even as one could get through two sets.

Linetskaya rode three breaks of Cargill's serve in the opening set to race out to a 5-3 lead. The two players held from there as Linetskaya served out the set at love.

Cargill, who was moved around considerably by Linetskaya in the opening set, decided to become the aggressor in the second set.

Breaks in the fourth and sixth games allowed Cargill to race out to a 5-1 lead, but Linetskaya refused to go quietly.

Linetskaya broke Cargill twice over the next three games to rally and tie the set at 5-5. Cargill recovered, however, to win the set 7-5.

In the final set, Linetskaya had a 4-2 lead, setting up the crucial seventh game of the set.

Cargill built a 40-love lead on her serve, but couldn't hold. Cargill got loose with two forehands and a backhand, and on her fifth break point opportunity, Linetskaya chased Cargill out wide and Cargill floated a chip backhand wide as Linetskaya went up 5-2.

Linetskaya closed out the match from there as she hit a well-executed drop shot, and clinched the match with a backhand winner.

Eugenia Linetskaya has had an amazing run on the USTA Pro Circuit the last two weeks and has certainly proved herself a player to be reckoned with in the future. The 17-year-old Moscow native won the first USTA title of her young career two weeks ago at the $25,000 event in Jackson, Miss., defeating fellow Russian teenager, 14-year-old Alisa Kleybanova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in a two-hour, 42-minute final.

She then followed that sensational performance up by reaching the final of last week’s event – the $75,000 Movie Gallery USTA Pro Classic in Dothan, Ala. – crafting a nine-match winning streak, before falling to Shuai Peng of China, 6-2, 6-1, in the final. With her victory in Dothan, Linetskaya’s WTA ranking moved up to a career-high No. 149 in the world. She ended 2003 ranked No. 221.

Linetskaya also posted impressive results in the other two USTA tournaments she competed in this year. She qualified into the $50,000 event in Orange, Calif., and then advanced all the way to the final, where she lost in three sets to the Ukraine’s Yulia Beygelzimer, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. She also reached the quarterfinals of the $25,000 event in Redding, Calif., falling to Anne Keothavong of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-3.

eugenia won her 2nd round match 6-3 6-2 over grandin, she plays widjaja next who seems to be regaining some form so it could be a tough match. good luck eugenia!

Well done Zhenya. Now it's on the cards she'll finish at least in the top 150 at the end of the year. She'll probably be seeded at the US-Open Qual, and she's good on the HC's. Generally good results from the Russian players on grass :bounce:

eugenia lost to widjaja. i thought this would be a hard one to win but i have to say i'm shocked with the result following live scores. eugenia lost 6-4 6-7 1-6. she was up a break twice in the 2nd set and had a match point in the tie break. she broke widjaja to love at 0-5 in the 3rd set but went on to lose her service game to 15.

Zhenya blew it   :fiery:

she served for match *6-5 in 2nd
and had a match pt in Tiebreaker at 8-7

and lost that 8-10
final set letdown 1-6  :bigcry: :(

its a disappointing that she didnt qualify but she didnt and now she has to focus on getting into wta events, she ready for the wta level and needs to work her way iinto wta tennis. hopefully in the next few months we can see her win a round or 2 at a wta event.
