GAMBILL CRIES AFTER SARAS LOSS
Anne Gambill was seen crying after seeing her best friend Sara Sabatini loose today.Heres what she had to say:-<br />'I was upset cos Sara lost on her first match back and also i was happy that she was back!Good luck to her from now on'
Dec 17th, 2001, 10:07 PM
Heres what Jelliana Seles had to say after her win over Messay.
"Obviously her foot was slowing her down, she looked to be struggling in the second set, she was playing good tennis in the first, but her foot got the better of her. Im pleased with my performance today, its still quite hard playing an 'injured' player from the other side of the court as you just dont know what to expect, is she going to be ok, or not, totally unpredicable. Overall im happy, and i hope messay recovers soon. Im hope further in this tournament but Wong will be ver diffcult, but as allways i'll give it my best. Thanks, thats all."
I am glad to come through this match today, I know Sophia Sabatini is on a come back and really part of me want her to win the match, but I am sure she will go far as she is such a great player

Turundzhov upsets Dokic!
No 1 Australian junior Daniela Turundzhov has advanced to the 2nd rnd of the Grade 1 Yucatan Cup.
Facing spaniard, Elena Dokic, Turundzhov was in blistering form, breaking the Spaniard twice to take the match, 7-5 6-3.
Turundzhov was ecstatic with her win, here is her interview:
<br />Grade 1 Yucatan Cup<br />MEXICO
<br />D TURUNDZHOV/E. Dokic 7-5 6-3
<br />Q: Daniela, a good solid win, an upset in most minds?
A: Yeah, she's a really good player. I knew she would be very tough so I'm very happy to have gotten through that match and move further in this tournament. Had a disappointing week last week so wanted to make up for it this week, a good start for me I think.
<br />Q: You talked about last week, how disappointed were you with that loss?
A: Well, I think it was good for me, to have an experience like that. I was too complacent, I expected her to fall apart and she didn't. I didn't know what I was doing so it taught me to always be prepared. Natalya played really well, she deserved it but it was a good experience for me.
<br />Q: What do you think was the key out there today?
A: I think it was the first set. You know, we were both serving well and till 5-5, it was really tough for both of us to do anything on the return. I think breaking her at 6-5 was the key, once I took that set, I started playing better and better, her attitude dropped a little in the 2nd set.
Q: Next up is Caroline Spencer, what do you expect?
A: Caroline has been playing really well lately. You know, I played her a few weeks back at an exhibition and won but that's totally different, this is a real match, I'll have to concentrate really hard.
<br />Q: Your relationship with Catherine Pierce, what's happening?
A: I seriously don't know. I mean, she does this on purpose, you know, I'm not following her around. I hardly speak to her, I'm just playing tour events you know, I'm not going to stop playing just because she's playing. I just concentrate on what I do.
<br />Q: You were planning on playing the Connolly Cup, that didn't work out?
A: Yeah, it didn't you know. Something's being worked out now between Alx and my sister, Jelena as to what they can do with the 2 junior events. It'll be good.

Dlhopolcova Wins On Day 2
Interview with Natalya Dlhopolcova:
Q: Natalya, welcome to Mexico, how was your first match?
A: Thank you, it's nice to be here. I think it went pretty well, my opponent gave me some troubles so I had to work hard to win.
Q: How much did you know about Mozzarella coming into this match?
A: Well, not a whole lot actually. I know she has been playing at this level for ahwile and had played some pro events too, so I knew she had a bigger experience advantage, but I don't think she had a whole lot of practice which maybe was the difference. She made maybe a few too many errors on the important points.
Q: What parts of her game were giving you trouble?
A: Well, she wasn't really hitting with that much pace, but she was throwing me a lot of spins and did a good job of keeping me guessing at times. She seems like a smart player.
Q: Your next opponent is the 6th seed Lara Miele, what will you try and do in that match?
A: Well, Lara I am sure is happy she got a win here and will be eager to keep her good play up, so I will have to try and put on as much pressure as possible and hopefully my game will be working well. She is a top player so this will be a good test for me.
Q: Thank you Natalya.

Heres what Jelliana Seles had to say after her win over seeded Wong in singles and win in doubles with her partner Ana Maria Herrera over the Miele Sisters.
"Excellent, just great. Its been a perfect day for me and Ana Maria. Im over the moon. Looking forward to the Quarters, it will be a very hard match, she will be har to defeat."
Australian junior Daniela Turundzhov has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Grade 1 Yucatan Cup in Mexico today.
Turundzhov upset 3rd seeded Brit, Linzi Patterson to book a quarterfinal berth against fast improving Brit, Jelliana Seles.
Here is an interview with Turundzhov:
Q: Congratulations Daniela, really starting to play well?
A: Thanks, it was a great win for me out there today. Linzi's a great player, you know, the 3rd seed so it was going to be tough against her, I'm really pleased I won that match, most people didn't expect me to.
Q: You expected to play Caroline Spencer, did you get a shock?
A: Yeah (laughs). I'd check the draw sheet wrong, lookied in the quarter above me. I prepared for Caroline so when I walked into the locker room today, I was really surprised (laughs). I was like 'that's not Caroline!'
Q: Did that affect you? You seemed very uptight, very nervous in the opening set?
A: Well, I don't think it affected me a great deal. It's always going to be tough against a great player like Linzi. You know, I was a little nervous because I didn't prepare for Linzi, I wasn't very confident. She started really well, didn't miss a thing, but even though she won the first set 6-2, a lot of games went to deuce. It was a close matches, a lot of the rallies were really long.
Q: You've been getting better with every match, is it a confidence thing? Is it a match play thing?
A: I think it's a combination of both. Now, I'm back in the swing of thigns and you know, the match play is really starting to help me. I think confidence is really important you know, because it can really help in tight situationa. I always try and stay positive, you know, learn from my losses so I think it's a bit of both.
Q: Up next is Jellianna Seles, know a lot about her?
A: Yeah, I mean I talk to her off the court a bit. She's been playing really well this week so she's going to be really tough to beat. I just have to stay focused and try my best and see how things work out. It'll be a tough match.
Q: You and Mary lost your doubles match again, where is this partnership heading?
A: Well, we haven't been teaming well lately, we've been making a lot of mistakes. I think I heard something about Mary wanting to play with Mutola next year. I'm just looking around for a partner at the moment, but me and Mary need to discuss a few things.

Dlhopolcova Moves Through To Quarterfinals
Wednesday's junior tennis action at the Yucatan Cup, proved to be filled with plenty of surprises and upsets. One of which occurred between Slovakian newcomer Natalya Dlhopolcova and 6th ranked Lara Miele of Brazil. In a close encounter, Dlhopolcova surprised the crowd with a high level of play, and eventually an upset which moved her into the quarterfinals against world #2 Marta Maria Conde-Martinez.
Q: Natalya, congratulations on your win today, is this your biggest win so far?
A: Well, yes, I mean I have only been playing for 2 weeks now, so I am very happy with my results thus far. To beat a top 10 player is excellent for me.
Q: How did you feel coming into the match? Did you think you could win?
A: Yeah, I thought I had a chance. I think you always need to think you have a chance against any player, otherwise there is no hope because you've given up before it has even begun.
Q: You lost last week to Wong, your first match against a top 10 player, and this time you managed to turn the tables around and win in a tight 3 setter, what was the key to that for you today?
A: I think just a more focused approach. I tried not to think so much about the win, but just try and work at playing my best tennis at every point because I knew that would be the difference. I think maybe after she won the first set she started to get a bit tentative and not going for her shots so much, and in the 3rd set I could see she wasn't hitting the ball with as much confidence so I tried to pressure her and it paid off well.
Q: Your next opponent is Conde-Martinez, do you know much about her?
A: Well, I know a bit, I have seen her play before, and she is a tough player by the looks of it. She's the only seeded player left in the event, so maybe I will be able to keep up my good level of play and make it a close match or better. I'm pretty satisfied with making the quarters, but I'm still of course going to keep trying for better.
Q: You also face the top seeds in doubles in the qaurterfinals, looking forward to that?
A: Yeah, Anna and I won our match today which was good, we play Adeva and Messay, who actually we played last week and beat, so I expect a good match. I am sure they will definetly be looking to get some revenge against us and they know a bit more of what to expect this time so I know we are still going to have to give it our all and be sharp if we are going to keep going.
Turundzhov continues winning run, through to semis!
Australia's no 1 junior Daniela Turundzhov has continued on her winning ways by advancing to the semi-finals of the Grade A Yucatan Cup in Mexico today.
Facing talented Brit, Jellianna Seles, Turundzhov was made to work hard for her victory, coming after 1hr and 53 minutes of draining baseline play.
Here is an interview with Turundzhov:
Q: Daniela, a great win for you, back to the old way?
A: Yeah, it's been a while since I've been able to string a few good wins like that. It feels very rewarding that my work is really starting to pay off, especially against such a great player like Seles, who makes you work really hard. I definitely feel very confident out on the court.
Q: In that first set, she was up 4-2, were you ever worried?
A: No, not particularyl. I probably wasn't hitting the ball as well as I could, I was just not moving very well, my legs weren't there, I think holding my serve, you know, at 2-4 was the key. It was a good game for me, a few winners and gave me confidence. She had you know, 5-4 30-15 on her server and you know, 5-3 in the tiebreak but I kept fighting, something I probably didn't do in my last tournaments and ended up taking the set.
Q: You took the first set, and then she took the 2nd set, were you nervous in the 3rd?
A: No, not particularly. I knew I had played a lot of 3 setters before and won most of them so I had the confidence and experience advantage over Jellianna but I knew not to underestimate her. I just focused and tried to hang on to my serve, which I did. We both played well.
Q: Ana Maria Herrera is your next opponent, how do you think it'll go?
A: Well I mean, it'll definitely be tough against ehr. I played her twice before, on clay, and lost both times, in straight sets. That was clay and this is hardcourt, I tend to prefer this surface and she has been playing well lately. I just have to focus and not think about the past and just try to do what I have to do. She's a great player, she'll be very tough to beat.
Q: You think the surface will suit you?
A: I don't think it favours any of us but she ahs some advantages. I think the crowd will be really behind her, she is the home town girl but I can usually handle hostile crowds. You know, my strokes are probably better on hard than hers but she won Wimbledon so I don't think the pace affects her. It'll be a good match.
Daniela Turundzhov talks to the media after her 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 win over Jellianna Seles.

Dlhopolcova Advances To Semifinals
Interview with Natalya Dlhopolcova
Q: Natalya, big win for you today, how did you feel you played?
A: It was a good match, I'm very pleased with my level of play so I am feeling good about my game right now.
Q: What was your frame of mind against the number 2 ranked player?
A: Well, Marta Maria is a good player, and she did not give up. I had some chances in the first to win a bit easier maybe, but she did not give in, and kept playing hard on every point. I had to earn it.
Q: She was citing some sort of injury during the match, how did that affect you?
A: Well, it didn't affect me at all. As far as I was concerned she is obviously well enough to be on the court, so if that is how it is, then there is no excuses. She seemed perfectly fine to me everyone else, so that's that.
Q: You're in your first singles semifinal, next opponent is US Open champion Catherine Pierce, what will you try and do against her?
A: Well, obviously she knows how to play big matches well, and I think she probably ahs lots of confidence now that she has strung together some wins this week so I know it will be a tough match for me. My goal is just to work hard and not let the occasion of playing for a spot in the final get to me.
Q: Another win for you over the talented pair Adeva/Messay how pleased are you with that?
A: Yeah I'm really happy, Anna and I played a really good match and I think we felt not as much nervousness as last time. To get a win over the top ranked pair right now means a lot to us. Next up is Fernandez/Hingis, who we actually played last week aswell, so I expect them to come out aggressive.
Good week for Elena and Anne hoping we can do better next week though!

Here is a comment from the young Aussie:
Ana played really well. It was a very tough match, very long and draining. I'm very exhausted at the moment but I'm really happy to be through to the finals. I hope I can do well against Natalya

Dlhopolcova claims Grade A Singles and Doubles at Yucatan
Interview with Natalya Dlhopolcova
Q: Natalya, congratulations, you have played 2 events in your career, and already a singles and doubles title. How does it feel?
A: I couldn't have asked for more, I played good tennis this week, and I manage to overcome many tough opponents, along with Anna in the doubles too. I am really happy.
Q: How was the final? 2 weeks in a row against Turundzhov.
A: Yeah, she played really well. I think it was a good match by us both, just a few little points made the difference. I think we were both tired so I was happy to win the match in 2 otherwise who knows what would have happened in the 3rd.
Q: Where do you go from here?
A: Well, Casablanca, and Connolly Continental Cup are next up for me, I know I still have a lot to improve on, so I will try my best to do well there.
