Tough draw for a Tier IV, but that's what she needs. I am looking forward to this QF with Zvonareva, it should be interesting for both players.
It's good to see her as the first seed :).

Good luck Tatiana !

It wasn`t the best match Tati played. In fact from what i saw in the stats, it was pretty ugly, especially on the serve, but at this point any kind of win from Tati will do. :clap2: Hopefully this win will get Tati back in the right direction.

hmmm. at least she won.... Im sure they'll be working on the serve as we post so hopefully it will be better tomorrow, i mean look at the winning % on the first in the first!! also i think her backhand is still treating her bad and from what i've seen in past matches, shes got to be confident in it and then that will be a fairly good weapon for her. When i saw her at wimbledon, her forehand was atrocious but her bhand was great and it was her bhand that got her through that match. Hopefully she can keep improving with each match and then be in good form for the big tournies. Allez tati! Good luck tomorrow or wednesday (whenever her match is

Tatiana Golovin broke the spell of the top seeded players shattering in the 1st round
17.09.2007

19-year old Golovin needed an hour and 22 minutes for her victory over the 10 years senior and 60 places lower-ranked American Lilia Osterloh, 6:1 1:6 6:1. This was the first time in 3-year history of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open tournament that the top seeded player did not bid farewell in the 1st round. Namely Katarina Srebotnik failed to advance to the 2nd round last year, as the same misfortune occured to Italian Silvia Farina Elia two years ago.

Tatiana, who has her mother among the cheering fans in Portorož, did not show her best play and as she said herself this was enough for a 2:1 win. She hit 6 aces but also made 8 double faults. Her coach is famous former Swedish tennis player Mats Willander, who is at the moment with the Davis Cup team.

"The surface here in Portorož is very fast what surprised me. I heard from the players who were here last year and in 2005 that the surface was one of the slowest hard court surface on the Tour. I could compare this year's surface with the one in Luxembourg although the tournament there takes place in a hall. Despite that I really like Portorož. The hotel is excellent, the atmosphere is amazing. I also went for a swim this morning, so I am really enjoying my stay here."

Golovin took this tournament as a preparation for the end of the season and is aware that the competition in Portorož is really tough this year. "Zvonareva, Srebotnik, Bammer have already beaten me at least once, so it will be really hard to capture the title here,"

For the place in the quartefinal she will face the winner of the match Voracova (CZE) vs. Knapp (ITA). She has never played against them.

I am really looking forward to see her playing so as to notice the differences in her game due to the work with Mats. I don't know if she struggles because of her low confidence or because she lacks references. I hope she doesn't try to slice every backhand .

small steps. There's no point of worrying about the top players when she's losing to players like Ashasha Fat-Rolle (who's name i can't even spell) She usually good at giving beatdowns to everyone outside the top 25 so its good that shes got a couple of straight sets wins in this tournament. She just has to keep on getting better and peak against a top player in stuttgart. Believe in her because seriously, she stands a chance against any top player right now but henin or venus. She beat kuznetsova 3 weeks ago. The way Chakvetadze played at USO Was :help:. Maria is a Joke. Serena Is not doing too great herself. She has petrova's number. 19-year old Tatiana Golovin in the Portorož finals
22.09.2007

Top seeded player in Portorož and No. 19 at the WTA Tour rankings Tatiana Golovin reached the Banka Koper Slovenia Open singles final where she will face home-favourite Katarina Srebotnik. The French woman needed only 82 minutes to crash Russina Vera Dushevina's game, 7:6 (5) 6:2.

"It was my best performance this week. I am satisfied with my game, I feel that my strikes are as good as they were at the season beginning. My form is getting better and better. Dushevina is a great player. I knew that I had to play wisely and aggresively what I also managed," described the match Golovin who has not try to hide her happiness over the fact that she advanced to the final. She came to Portorož decided to clinch a victory, to play some matches after losing in the 1st round of US Open, to find the right rhythm of her play and gain selfconfidence for the last part of the season.

In tomorrow's final she will be facing home-favourite Katarina Srebotnik, who has still not dropped a set, and crowded stadium zealously cheering for Slovene best tennis player.

"For sure it will be a great final, best possible and I plan to give my best. Of course I have seen her play against Dulko, I know her well and she is one of the best players on the Tour. Regarding how we both played this past week this will a final fit also for higher ranked tournaments I am looking forward to tomorrow's match and I hope the fans will also enjoy."

You guys are too hard on Tati. (That's what happened when you always thought Tati is still the bestest.)

Kata is playing pretty well so far. Tati started to clean up her game.

At least you cant saying im being too optimistic or delusional again. :p

I do agree that she is being very gutsy. Maybe shes still attacking because mats said so. The more she attacks the better she will get at being offensive i suppose. Shes hit some glorious forehands today. As for the bhand....

Brainless Tati today :sobbing:
Yes, that's what I thought.
Since pairing up with Mats, Tati is mostly playing brainless tennis.
Where's the defense? Ugh.

My 2 favorite players winning a title on the same day? Impossible I would've thought until today. So improbable that it made me post for the first time in weeks.

Congrats to Tati on her second title even if it was a Tier IV. A nice win over Srebotnik who is a tough opponent and had been in better form coming into the final. Keep playing better Tati and try and make a push for a top 15 year end finish.

Bye again :wavey:

Agnes & Tatiana winning the same day :woohoo:, two 1988 girls in top 20 :yeah:!

Very happy with the way Tatiana came back, she stayed focused even with this horrible crowd. Good for her confidence! Now she has to work a lot on her tennis, her backhand has been very poor till the end and she remained inconsistent. Let's see how she continues in Luxembourg, she can definitely win her first two matches.

Congrats Tati, two titles in the year is great! :)

Tati did play well on the third set. She should not have let Kata come back at 3-0 where she had 40-0 lead. But Kata played great match too. Most of the time, Tati was playing brainless tennis from behind baseline. Yeah, no defense to back up at all. The last game, though, was good from Tati. Reminds me of the old day Tati.

BHs should just die. Kata pounded on them and got many easy volleys out of them.

PS : I wasn't bothered by the crowd. Obviously they're cheering for Kata to win.

Congrats to Tati on winning her second title. :clap2: Today`s match, like much of the week, wasn`t exactly the best Tati played, but she play good enough to get the win and the title. I`m very proud of her for putting together a nice week of tennis. I really hope this win will be a much needed confidence builder for Tati. Plus i must say that some of y`all need to get rid of the those RIP career signatures, because Tati isn`t done yet.

Article from the official site:
Tatiana Golovin claims Portoroz title
23.09.2007

French Tatiana Golovin becomes the big winner in Portorož. After 2 hours and 42 minutes of tough battle she defeats Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 2:6 6:4 6:4.
Velenian-born Srebotnik heads off for a great start and captures the first set smoothly 6:2, taking advantage of two her opponent's 3 double faults and managing to score two breaks.
In the second set Tatiana Golovin regains her composure and forces Srebotnik with aggressive play from the base line into making errors. Her first serve gets better and she wins 65% of points on her first serve. A lot of great rallies from the base line are exchaged but Golovin manages to win the set with 6:4. "In the first set it was just not me on the court," Golovin said after the match. "I was not able to focus, I was not able to stay calm, maybe I was a little bit nervous, while Katarina started off very strong."
The French woman continues in great rhythm in the third set as well. She breaks Srebotnik in her opening serving game and takes the lead 3:0. In the 4th game of the set when everything points to Katarina not being able to find the right response to aggressive and accurate play from the base line Katarina struggles to turn the deficit from 0:40 on her serving game. The result was even for 7 times before Srebotnik finally wins her first game in the third set with a smash. Golovin loses her concentration for a minute, makes her 6th double fault in the match and allows Srebotnik to break her and lower the result to 5:4. But when cheering fans of the tennis stadium ŠRC Marina Portorož have already hoped for a turn out, Tatiana Golovin uses the first out of two match points and captures the Portorož title, 2:6 6:4 6:4.
"I could not really say what decided the match," said Golovina. "I think I made a little bit less mistakes, in the third set I was a little bit more consistent, but when you play at the top level you don't really know what makes the difference."
When asked about her plans in the upcoming Olympic year, she says she hopes to participate at the Olympics: "This is a big priority as it is a big honour. Grand Slams are the top of the top in tennis, but the Olympics are the top for athletes in general, it's something you tell to your kids."
In 2008, the Portoroz tournament moves to a summer slot in July. Although players are accustomed to announce their presence at future editions, she says her chance of coming back to Portoroz are not that remote: "I think there are better chances to come back if it's on clay. I don't like this surface, you guys have to change it, it's too fast."
As the curtain falls on the Portoroz tournament, Tatiana Golovin has but little time to celebrate her second Sony Ericsson WTA title. She now heads off to Luxembourg where she is scheduled to play on Tuesday.

Golovina doesn't like fast courts :p

Top-seeded Tatiana Golovin beat Katarina Srebotnik 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 Sunday to win the Slovenia Open for her second WTA title.

Golovin lost in the first round of the U.S. Open last month and came to Portoroz to regain her rhythm.

"My form is up again," the 19-year-old Frenchwoman said. "I have a feeling that my strikes are like (they were) at the start of the season."

Srebotnik won the last of her four tournaments two years ago.

BOMBSHELL: She doesn't even like fast courts yet she's been to a GS Quarter, tier 1 Semi and won a title in fast courts. :help: She says she likesthe grass but the furthest she's gotten in 4r. :o And as for clay, shes done really well on green clay; a tier 2 title and a tier 1 SF and QF but Shes only made it past the first round of RG once. Why would she want it on clay if her game suits hard courts much more? Its like she's trying to convince herself shes a hacker. oh tati :o

Facing an in-form opponent and the vocal support of the home crowd, Tatiana Golovin truly defied the odds on Sunday afternoon in the beautiful city of Portoroz, defeating Katarina Srebotnik in three marathon sets for her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title of the year at the Banka Koper Slovenia Open.

Golovin, the top seed at the Tier IV stop, came out somewhat sluggishly in the first set, holding her serve in the opening game but going on to lose five of the next six games to surrender it, 6-2. But she lifted her level for the next two sets - each of which lasted more than an hour - and ground out the title victory over No.4 seed and home crowd favorite Srebotnik, 26 64 64.

"I had lots of trouble getting into the match in the first set; she was playing really well in front of her fans and it was just tough at the beginning," Golovin said. "But I started to calm down in the second set and really began fighting. In the third I think we both played really good tennis. It was a really long match!"

"She was playing too well in the second and third sets," Srebotnik said. "She was making some mistakes off the returns and in the rallies in the first set, and she wasn't serving well either. But she stopped giving me free points and made me work hard, and she definitely deserved to win. I admire what she showed today."

The final wasn't Golovin's first close encounter of the week by any means. In the first round she needed three sets to get past American Lilia Osterloh, and in the semifinals she faced several hurdles in the first set of a 76(5) 62 win over No.8 seed Vera Dushevina, including her opponent leading 3-0 and serving for it, 5-4. But she made it through to the final, and had one more grind left in her.

"I played pretty poorly in my first match, but I think I was just getting used to the surface and the conditions," Golovin said. "I just started playing better and better every day. The forehand, the serve - it all started coming together."

Srebotnik, on the other hand, had few problems reaching the final in front of the Slovenian fans. She dropped a total of 13 games in four rounds, never giving away more than three games in any individual set. It looked like she was heading for a fifth win as she blew through the first set and held two points for a 2-0 lead in the second set against Golovin, before the Frenchwoman's rally cap kicked in.

"Of course I can't be happy to have lost in the final but it was a great week for me and I should appreciate it," Srebotnik said. "I made it really far and what is most important was I played well in front of my home crowd, who were amazing. It's tough to lose, but Golovin just took the level up and was the better player."

Although she has had one of her best overall seasons yet, Golovin is still trying to recover fully from a right ankle injury that sidelined her during the clay and grass court seasons. This week is something of a consolidation of her return, and also wipes away the memory of a shock first round loss at the US Open.

"It means a lot that I've won another title after my troubles this year; to win a title at any event is obviously always great," Golovin continued. "You never want to dwell on a loss like mine at the US Open. This gives me a lot of confidence."

"Your first title is always the most special, but this one means a lot to me too," continued Golovin, whose first triumph came at the Tier II in Amelia Island, just a week before suffering her ankle injury. "All the work I've done paid off. Now I just want to finish the year healthy, play some more good matches, maybe get my ranking up for the Australian Open... I just want to play as well as I can."
