Jelena Jankovic who's currently No.2 in 2007-only rankings has played 25 events to-date.
Never before had a player who would eventually finish in Top-3 played so many tournaments during that season.

Year-end Top-3 (with number of tourns played) since 1996 when 'best of 18' (later 'best of 17') system was introduced:

1996
Graf – 11; Seles – 13; Sanchez – 18
1997
Hingis – 17; Novotna – 20; Davenport – 22
1998
Davenport – 20; Hingis – 17; Novotna – 18
1999
Hingis – 20; Davenport – 19; Venus – 18
2000
Hingis – 20; Davenport – 18; Venus – 9
2001
Davenport – 17; Capriati – 17; Venus – 12
2002
Serena – 13; Venus – 16; Capriati – 17
2003
Henin – 18; Clijsters – 21; Serena – 7
2004
Davenport – 17; Mauresmo – 17; Myskina – 19
2005
Davenport – 16; Clijsters – 17; Mauresmo – 19
2006
Henin – 13; Sharapova – 15; Mauresmo – 17

Since 2001 the only year-end Top-3 player who played 20+ tournaments during the season was Kim Clijsters in 2003.

2007 (as of October, 8)
Henin – 12 + Zurich, YEC = 14
Jankovic – 25 + Bangkok, Zurich, YEC = 28
Kuznetsova – 16 + Moscow, Zurich, YEC = 19

Jankovic very much reminds me of Kafelnikov and now Davydenko. If she keeps this up then I will not expect her to have a long career. Somewhere along the line she will have to cut her schedule.

Was Capriati injured in 2002 and Serena in 2003? They only played 7 events in those years.

Jennifer played 17 tournaments.
And Serena was injured. She hadn't played a tournament between Wimbledon-2003 and Miami-2004.

It's interesting to see Steffi(1996) made it to #1 with the least tournaments played among the year end #1 players.Serena(2003) is close behind.:worship:
And Lindsay to play less tournaments than previous years where she was in top 3.:)

Thanks AnnaK 4ever :)

I though Clijsters had played more in 2003...she had more than 90 victories, i think...

Why is Jelena playing both Suttgart and Bangkok??

Bali and Beijing (Asia) - Stuttgart (Europe) - Bangkok (Asia) - Zurich and YEC (Europe)

That's a crazy schedule!

But it's Jelena!!

And I thought no one would catch Coetzer's record.

Coetzer never finished in Top-3. Though she had 29 tournaments on the week she was No.3.

Just checked: Jankovic had 30 trns after Wimbledon so she is the record holder anyway!

No one denies it.
The fact is almost half of her results don't help her ranking at all.

Good for her and good for tennis.

I agree... it's nice to see a player actually "playing" the tour.

It's always awful when you decide to travel to a tournament only to get there and see that of the 6-7 top 20 players signed up... only one actually plays.

Yea it's nice that she plays tourneys even if they won't help her ranking, it makes the field stronger and more interesting. She probably just wants to win as much as she can having gone through that awful streak last year. I really like her and hope she doesn't burn out. I'd say she'll came down if she wins a grand slam though.

She's pretty much :silly:

What I don't get is she says she's burnt out and that she'll reduce tournaments in the fall, then goes ahead and enters everything in sight on different continents zig-zag style. I think she's addicted to tournaments, basically. But I'll always love her.

the fact that she plays so much annoys me. She's consistent enough to be in the top 3 with a few tournaments. She better keep up her consistency for next year because she will plummet if she doesn't.

ACTUALLY.... lol Jankovic already stated at the US Open.... that next year her schedule will be much smaller.... the only reason she hasnt pulled out of any tournaments this year is because she committed to them at the start of the year....

Basically She committed her schedule prolly due to the fact that last year she was on a 9 1rst round exit..... so she was playing to stay on tour basically every tourny now.... She doesnt need it... but since her schedule was commited she kept playing. I think next year she'll be in the 15-20 range....

Unless you think she'll have a Vaidisova-like schedule, she won't be in the 15-20 range. She also said she was cutting back tournaments this fall.

I know. 20/21 SF+ and 9 titles. It's a fantastic achievement by Kim. Jelena's not quite up to that level yet.
