NEW YORK (AP) -- Venus Williams climbed five spots to No. 9 in the rankings Monday, meaning she and her sister, No. 7 Serena, are both in the top 10 for the first time in nearly two years -- even though both lost in straight sets at the U.S. Open to eventual champion Justine Henin.

Henin stayed at No. 1, while Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova moved up two places to a career-best No. 2, followed by Jelena Jankovic. Maria Sharapova dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 after her title defense at Flushing Meadows ended with a third-round upset loss.

Venus Williams returned to the top 10 for the first time since April 2006 by reaching the Open semifinals a year after missing the tournament with an injured wrist. Serena Williams, who lost to Henin in the quarterfinals, moved up from ninth.

The last time both sisters were ranked in the top 10 was the week of Sept. 19, 2005. Serena Williams fell out of the top 10 the next week and wound tumbling all the way down to 140th.

Thats right baby. They may not have won the US Open but its good for them that their rankings are back in the top 10. That means no worries about troubles in the early stages of tournaments, particularly slams. GO VENUS AND SERENA!!!

That is good. They may not have won the tournament but that is a very positive move. They wont have to play tough players in early rounds in grand slams and I think this shows if they are healthy, they will play more tourneys and get better rankings.

Really though ... everyone knows that their real rankings were always in the top 10. It's nice that it is back to official. Hopefully they can both stay in the top 8 for the Australian so they can be a SF/F in the Slams.

If Davenport can keep her form and get into good shape, I hope she can join them soon enough.

Vee started the year ranked #54 and Ree at #81.
Beautiful progress, as they have openly stated their aim to once again sit atop of the tour as the #1 and #2 players. Clearly they do walk the talk.
