People bitch about the WTA rankings not reflecting the actual relative strength of players. So let's have a look at the GS rankings (or Race rather) of 2007, i.e. just the points of the AO, RG, Wimbledon and the USO :

1 Henin Justine 2450
2 Williams Serena 1750
3 Williams Venus 1540
4 Ivanovic Ana 1380
Sharapova Maria 1380
6 Kuznetsova Svetlana 1340
7 Chakvetadze Anna 1040
Bartoli Marion 1040
Vaidisova Nicole 1040
10 Jankovic Jelena 980
11 Peer Shahar 730
12 Safarova Lucie 570
13 Schnyder Patty 510
14 Clijsters Kim 450
15 Szavay Agnes 447
16 Paszek Tamira 431
17 Safina Dinara 430
Hingis Martina 430
19 Dementieva Elena 410
20 Krajicek Michaella 402
21 Hantuchova Daniela 372
22 Mauresmo Amelie 370
23 Bammer Sybille 342
24 Bondarenko Alona 330
Srebotnik Katarina 330
26 Petrova Nadia 322
Azarenka Victoria 322
28 Sugiyama Ai 300
29 Garbin Tathiana 292
Radwanska Agnieszka 292

A few observations:

There they are :) The Williams' sisters safely at #2 and #3.
Jelena Jankovic has a problem. Her 10th place here clearly shows she underperforms at the Top contests. Is she the new Petrova (at 26 here) ?
The two youngsters that really stand out here, and are thus capable of performing at the top level, are Szavay and Paszek. High hopes for them are justified.
Elena D. and Martina H. are in trouble. End of careers in sight ?
Remarkabkle performance by Krajicek: #20 here while only #31 overall.
Yes, yes, Daniela underachieves too at this level

Other observation: Justine is ranked #1 in this list with only 3 slams played

She'd still be number 1 if you just count
FO and USO

hope Venus keeps it up @ the AO (she'll have a good showing there again at some point  ) and the FO (2008 is supposed to be FOQF year, every two...:o).

this is actually quite close to what the rankings should ideally look like
look at all the inflated rankings that the russians have got playing tier 2 and below esp petrova

With the way the last 3 slam draws have worked out, I'm not putting too much emphasis on this list. But it is interesting.

not only Misa but Shahar also is much higher in that list , 11 instead of 16 and I assume that this is related to the fact that she performs well when most of the crowd is supporting her and the louder the better. This applies for both Peer-Kuzi(Aus) , (Aus)Peer-Serena and (U.S)Peer-Vaidisova, and I believe that should the match chakvetadze -Peer occured in a later hour and thus infront of a packed Jewish crowd, the supporting would have taken out the best of Shahar and she would have had a much better chance to get to semis.

Well Martina missed the French Open and was injured during Wimbledon, so I don't think her spot is so bad considering the circumstances.

Well i'm glad rankings aren't just based on slams. Fair enough they ARE by far the most important tourneys, but being able to perform well on the biggest stages shouldn't be everything! I'm glad players who maybe don't like to be watched by so many people, or whatever, have chances to prove their skill in a smaller situation (obviously repeatedly in order to gain enough points to compete with the slam winners). The nerves to finish an important match IS essential regardless, the nerves to play in a GS centre court shouldn't count for everything. Which i guess is why they don't.
Compare to actors and literal stages. That's where i'm coming from.
