<font face="arial black" size="5" color="Orange"><br />Lara Miele ready to win the Orange Bowl</font>
After a slip on the rankings, the 16-year-old Lara Miele stated that she is more than ready to win a big event and it looks like the Orange Bowl is going to be the ONE.
Lara Miele started dominating the FWTT Juniors tour along with Shizu Katsumi, reaching the #2 spot of the rankings after a tournament win in Brunei. Later, with the rise of Gambill and Conde-Martinez, L. Miele fell to the 4th place.<br />"At least there isn't much pressure." - she stated about her current ranking. "But I'm starving to have my name on the top of the ranking."
Lara's sister, Barbara Miele, who had a sluggish start on the tour, reached the semifinals at the Eddie Herr Championships and reached the 9th spot. Barbara will debut in Miami against Jana Hingis, and Lara will face the winner of Messay and Kournikova-Elia. Lara and Barbara are on the same side of the draw and they can face each other on the quarterfinals.
The Miele Sisters are seeded third in doubles and they will face Mutola and Pierce in the first round.

Some words of Marta Maria after her training..
Q: Marta Maria did you hear what Barbara Miele say?
MM: Barbara Miele ? Who is she?
Q: You dont remeber her? You defeated her two weeks ago in semis..
MM: Oh... yes it was very easy... she should think to change of sport.... i think she chose the wrong one...
Dec 9th, 2001, 07:54 PM
Barbara answer Marta Maria :
"Well I guess she needs a hard punishment of her parents.. This girl is so childish and spoiled.. She needs an answer... I guess she didn't realized that was against me that she had the most difficult match in Eddie Herr...! Maybe she was looking for her toys or dolls, and didn't even paid attention... And I'm very sad with her being the top seed. I prefer Shizu, but the life is full of ups and downs...."
Dec 9th, 2001, 08:02 PM
World #1 had to answer the press when she was leaving a restaurant.
Q: Marta Maria... Barbara attacked you again...
MM: What Barbara?... Oh that Barbara ? Please God dont use her a excuse to make me reports or pictures... She is just jealous... she is not a good player and she needs to get the press attention insulting top players as Ana Maria or me..
Q: She accused you as a child who doesnt deserve to be top seed next tournament..
MM: Oh yes i forgot she is a big woman..... and about ranks.... i dont make them... results does so... bye bye i have not much time to waste it with that kind of persons.

Barbara Miele answer Marta Maria's attackment...
"Well, like I said, she is a childish girl. She needs a hard punishment, to learn to don't be such a nasty annoying "woman" as she prefers being called. I don't waste my time insulting players to call attention. I just don't keep players who don't have any kind of knowledge try to overpower me. She can be good in tennis, but only in tennis. I want to see when her carrer ends. She will have to lieve as servent, in some restaurant in Spain.... If she thinks I am a bad player, well, leave her with this thought. Cause this subject we can't solve on words, we have to show on court."

Lara Miele, the eldest of the Miele sisters, tells all the truth on the arguement between Barbara Miele, the youngest Miele sister, and Marta Maria Martinez, current #1 of the FWTT Juniors
"Most of the players hate us, me and Barbara. Well, I don't know exactly why it is! Maybe because wet get more hype and attention<br />than them, and they get jealous, maybe because we're sisters and we have good results. We all are great players, on a very same level, because we are all Top 10. Marta and Ana try to make a<br />conspiracy against us but we are going to be strong and don't care about it. By the way, we don't need them for anything, nor any other silly player who trusts them. Barbara sometimes goes beyond the limits with some statements, but the other girls keep teasing and it's very hard to control. All 4, Marta, Ana, Barbara and this intruse Kriventcheva-Molik have been very imature and childish with everything. I think everybody can take a lesson from this and let's stop because the Orange Bowl is coming and we better display some great tennis <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

surprise by the late Wild Card Entrant
(8)B Miele bt Hingis 76(1) 76(6)
Erratic and poor display form younger Miele. Should have beaten the less talented and lower-ranked Hingis with ease.
Spencer bt Keller 61 64
Comfortable win for Spencer of the returning and out-of-from Keller.
Herrera bt Gonzalez 46 63 75
Herrera overcomes tough test against a player just bag from a nasty back injury.
Pierce bt Van Krumpt 60 06 64
A topsy-turvey match that came to life in teh final set. US Open champion shoudl her class over an opponent who looked out of ehr depth on big points.
Fernandez bt Clijsters 75 36 64
Clijsters definately one to look out for after this impressive debut, which saw he loose out a close match against Fernandez.

<font color = blue size= 4> Jelliana Seles Speaks About Her Future And FWTT Junoirs</font>
Q: Hi Jelliana. Your fairly new to the tour and your young, fresh and hungry for victory. You've already defeated some very high class players including today when you beat 5th seed, Elena Dokic in the Orange Bowl. How do you feel?
Jelliana: Excellent! I am really enjoying my junior carrer so far, even though i have just started. I know i can defeat the top players, i am very hungry for success, and i feel i am already ready for a tournament win.
Q: Yes, i think so to. <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> Well you already have prooven yourself in doubles, catching your first doubles title not so long ago, on your 2nd ever doubles tournament, how do you feel about this?
Jelliana: I think i have to give all praise to my excellent doubles partner, Maria. She has been excellent in welcoming me into the tour and has given me great confidence in my game.
Q: Why are you not playing doubles with Herrera this week?
Jelliana: Well you see, i was planning to take 2 weeks away from the tour, after my marathon match i played the match before, losing in 1rd after having 17 mp's. I felt i needed a short break to pull myself together. So i had last week off, and then this week i was missing the tour so much i pleaded for a wild card into this event, which i got. Maria had already decided to play this event, and well it isnt fair that she should miss the doubles just coz of me. Hopefully we will be playing together again next week.
Q: What do u think of the Conde-Martinez, and Miele Sisters fight?
Jelliana: Well it really has nothing to do with me. I do believe that Conde-Martinez has had lawyers involved, maybe this is the best way to dispute the argument, rarther than taking things into their own hands.
Q: What do tou think of the things they have said?
Jelliana: As i say - it really has nothing to do with me.
Q: Thanks Jelliana, im sure you will excell in your game in the future, all the best.

Dockitch arrives in Miami, with new name and hopes!
Australia's highest ranked junior, Daniela Dockitch arrived in Miami today, after finishing Runner-Up at the Sony/DKNY Miele Sieters Exhibition.
Dockitch however has changed her last name to Turundzhov (Ta-ran-zhov) after her mother re-married Yugoslav mining magnate, Igor Turundzhov.
Here is a transcript of an interview given as Turundzhov arrived.
<br />Q: Welcome to Miami Daniela.
A: Thanks, I've been here many times before. I have a house here, well my sister does. I train here in Florida, it's a really nice place to play tennis, very exciting sort of feel to this tournament.
Q: Where is your house in Florida?
A: Saddlebrook. It's a sporting facility just near here. It's really good, there facilities are great and you always have people to work with.
Q: Is that why you prefer to live in Florida instead of back home in Australia?
A: Yeah, basically, that's it. I still go back home as much as possible but the facilities are a lot better here in Florida. There are a lot of tournaments around here and you know, it's a very good place to train. Travelling from Australia is like hell. Travelling to Europe is very bad, you can't sleep for 3 days. I struggled a little with the travelling but from Florida, it's fine.
Q: Now, you're no longer Dockitch, now Turundzhov, how did that come about?
A: Well, about a year ago, some people may remember that my parents divorced. Since then, they've completely separated and my mum met this guy, Igor. They fell in love and married and they asked me to take his name. My dad had no objections so I did. I like it, it's a nice name, don't you think? (laughs)
Q: You've been playing better and better every week, what are your aims entering this tournament?
A: Yeah I have. You know, two weeks ago, I made the semis at Eddie Herr and last week finished runner up so hopefully this week I can go all the way but it'll be really tough because there are so many good players. I cam here to win, it's what I play for and you know, it's a little frustrating that I haven't got a singles title yet. You know, I've made like 7 or 8 finals and yet to win a tournament, that's something I want to imrpove on.
Q: You said you haven't won a tournament yet, what do you think is the problem?
A: I don't think there is a problem, just probably haven't played good tennis at the latter stages and that's when it counts. I think you know, I've been getting better and I hope that this week will be a different story.
Q: Former world no 1, you came back on tour and had no rank, how did that feel?
A: I was a little annoyed but I mean, you just take it in your stride and keep going because I mean, I couldn't do anything about it so I knew I was there before and I could get there again. Top 15 after 3 events isn't bad. I hope to be top 10 by the start of next season.
Q: Natalya Dhlopolcova in the 1st rnd here, have you played her before? What do you expect?
A: Yeah, I don't know a lot about her. No, no, I haven't played her before, she's just knew I think. This is her first event, she was practising before me and I watched her and she was really good. I think it'll be tough but hopefully I've done enough work leading in to the match.
Q: What are your plans after this event?
A: Well, I still have a few more junior events and you know, then I'll see. Maybe take a break but I still feel good, then I'll apply for some WC's into the Challengers and try getting match fit. I'll be flying home to Australia and prepare for the summer circuit.
<br />Daniela Turundzhov signs autographs for fans after her practise session today.

Turundzov begs for Huubere to return!
<br />Top ranked Australian junior, Daniela Turundzhov has begged for former world no 1 junior Mirjana Huubere to return to the FWTT Juniors.
Turundzhov believes that Huubere is needed to encourage the development of juior players in their country and to add depth to a great tour.
I would like Mirjana to ome back. We played great together and I think we need her. It's tough being the only Aussie other there, we need to work together. Come on Mirjana!

Interview with Barbara MIELE
B.MIELE/Hingis 7-6 7-6
Moderator questions please...
Q: Did Jana Hingis impressed you with her game?<br />B.MIELE: Yes absolutely she did. She has some good strokes, made me work harder than I thought I would. She is a fighter and a great player.
Q: You said you were nervous cause this match was your first. In which sense were you nervous?<br />B.MIELE: Well, I was nervous to get the pressure of being the seed, the favourite to win, and maybe choke and lose. Like happend last week. I was so confidence to reach the finals, I ended losing.
Q: Now what’s happening between you and Marta Maria? You’ve been trading insultes?<br />B.MIELE: Well, this is something where she begun. She thinks she is the best of the bests. That’s the consequence. And also, all you see how bad is to have an immature player on the top. She needs to learn some methods of education. She don’t have to say to accusations before confirm. I think she is on drugs, cause is not possible that thing she said.
Q: She said you were lesbian, and tried to caught her.<br />B.MIELE : Yes (laughing), that’s why I think that she needs to cut the drugs a little bit. Is making her bad. She will starts to accuse other players also, like she is doing at me.
Q: Ana Maria said that you was inventing stories.<br />B.MIELE: Oh, Ana Maria is mad cause I defeat her in Eddie Herr. She is nice, but has vulnerable feelings, so... I don’t have anything against her. I said that she will have a chance against me one time.... But unfortunely for her, that wasn’t the right moment.
Q: What you did today to forget all the pressure about this speechs made by Marta Maria?<br />B.MIELE: Oh, was easy. We know that kids actually don’t know or mean what they say, so I knew how to handle it.
Q: You don’t think you are catching so deeply in your answers??<br />B.MIELE: Me???? Looks like you didn’t saw what she said. You should look for it, and then tell me who is being more rude in this history.
Q: Will you process her?<br />B.MIELE: Of course! She will not be out of this story so easy now! Who she thinks she are? Just because she is the number one, she has the right to accuse me of anything she wants? She is very wrong! She is nobody! She is just the top seed, nothing more. She don’t have the right to accuse other players, just because she thinks she is superior to the others. I’m sure there are more inteligent players than her in this tour. That’s all. She don’t know who she is messing with, I think she didn’t realized yet.
Q: What Lara thinks of this?<br />B.MIELE: She wants us to stop this discussion, but no. After the judge’s decision, maybe we can stop one day. But now I just wanna think of my tennis. I want to be ready round to round.
Q: Ok, Barbara good luck in your next round!<br />B.MIELE: Thanks you very much.

Competing in her first ever FWT Junior level event, Dlhopolcova came out confident and eager to test her level of play against the world's most elite young atheletes in the sport.
Hailing from Slovakia, the talented 14 year old came to the States to gain some experience for the upcoming 2002 season where she intends on competing for the entire season in order to work her way up to the top level of the rankings. Shortly after her match, we were able to catch up with Natalya.
Q: Natalya, congratulations on an impressive first round win. What was the key to you winning?
A: Thank you. I was against a very difficult player, Turundzhov is a talented player with much success already, so this means a lot to me. I just tried to stay focused, and not let the occasion get to me. I went for it, because I knew I had nothing to lose at this point.
Q: How long have you been preparing for this trip to the Orange Bowl?
A: Well, for about the past 2 months. I have played a lot in my home country Slovakia, and also I have played some of the juniors here in Florida as I also train in Boca Raton, so I feel good about being here to compete with everyone.
Q: What is your goal?
A: Well, I just want to improve my game, I will be competing the next couple of weeks with not much pressure on me but to try and play my best, and make a good effort. I am mainly trying to prepare for next year, where I would like to try and make the top 10.
Q: Your next opponent is Mary Wong, another difficult player, can you tell us your expectations in that match?
A: Just to do my best and see where that can take me. That's all I can really do, is stay focused, concentrate on what I need to do, and just give it my all. I know Mary will be a difficult player for me to beat, so I will have to play my very best to try and win.
Q: Thank you Natalya.
A: Thank you.

filipina junior struggles into the second round.
meghann adeva, the number 1 FWTT junior in the philippines, survived a titanic match against newcomer victoria nadal in the first match of the orange bowl junior tournament. she beat the newcomer 7-6 1-6 6-3 as the newcomer failed to carryon the momentum built in a second set romp of adeva.
comments from meghann, "i am so grateful that i got through that round. for a newcomer, victoria is a very, very tough opponent. i can see her succeeding very well in the tour."
adeva next faces seeded player gambill in the next round.
The dreadful day fro the Miele's continued as Barbara was knowcked out in a thrilling encounter against the scot. Paterson served 13 aces on her way to victory.
Delacour bt Pierce 36 76(15) 64
A beatiful volley in a mammoth tie-break put Frenchwoman Delacour on the raod to victory. Pierce seems unable to find the form that crowned her US Open Champion
(2)Katsumi bt Herrera 76(1) 57 75
Katsumi is back! In a match she woudl have lost a couple fo weeks ago, the Japanese player kept a cool head against the spirited challenge of Herrera. 3 close sets kept the crowd warmed up in the cold weather court-side
Who would have said that the player that had the toughest match in the Orange Bowl today would be the only latinAmerican to come through? Venezuelan Carolina Spencer went on court to simply show Marta Maria Conde-Martinez who she was and score said it all with a win over world #1 6-2 6-3.
Unofrtunately not all Latin´s had this good luck. British Jelliana Seles beat Mexican Zerene Fernandez with a double 7-6(2). The other Mexican Ana Maria Herrera couldnt win also as she lost 7-6 5-7 7-5 against her doubles partner Shziu Katsumi in a great match.
And luck wasnt also in Brazil´s stars the Miele sisters as today fourth seed Lara Miele lost in straight sets against Kournikova-Elia, and also eigth seed Barbara Miele lost to Paterson in 2 tie-breakers. Luck didnt came after for the Miele as the third seeds had to say goodbye as they lost to Caroline Mutola and Catherine Pierce 7-5, 6-0.
In more doubles scores... fourth seeds Spencer and Paterson bt. Fleischmann and Delacour in straight sets. A. Herrera and Katsumi bt. Wong and Turundzhov 6-4, 6-3 and Dlhopolcova and Kournikova-Elia bt. Jana Hingis and Mexican Zerene Fernandez in 3 tough sets.
Carolina Spencer will face now British Jelliana Seles. Herrera/Katsumi will face first seeds Conde-Martinez and Krivencheva-Molik meanwhile Paterson and Venezuelan Spencer will face Dlhopolcova and Kournikova-Elia.

Karen Clijsters was tired of her name and would like to change it to VANESSA COENEGRACHTS. She asked the Belgian gouvernement and it was ok. Now she only needs permission from the tour directors. She would also like to keep her ranking status!<br />Thanks!

Caroline Mutola bows out in singles, wins in doubles
Her first tour match in six months, Caroline Mutola came out swinging against Mary Wong of Hong Kong only to lose 7/5 in the 3rd set. Later, she paired up with Australia's Catherine Pierce to beat the Miele sisters in suprisingly easy 2 sets.
Here is the post-match interview from today's doubles match
Q: Tight match against Mary yesterday. How do you feel?
A: You know, I didn't expect to win my first match, and against Mary who is quite an impressive player. I like to serve and volley a lot and she had some terrific passing shots.
Q: I know that you train with Ruflina (Taliamanosoko) who is best friends with Mary's sister, Jane. Have you met each other before?
A: Oh yes, definitely. I knew Mary before she even joined the circuit. We practiced one day, about 10 months ago, and I knew she was good. She asked me if I thought she could be in juniors pro tour and I said, 'Honey, if I can, then you sure can' and look where she is today.
Q: First match with Catherine. You 2 defeat the sisters.
A: Yeah, but Barbara didn't look right out there and Marta didn't look right in her singles match either. All of this arguing is pointless, and it is taking affect on their game. I hope they focus on their tennis and not each other, then the results will be much better.
Q: Well, thank you for your time and good luck in the rest of the tournament.
A: Thanks! <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

<font color= yellow size= 5>Jelliana "Delighted" with performance</font>
A Statement released by Jelliana Seles after her victory in round 2 of the Orange Bowl.
"I'm Delighted with the way i played today! It was an excellent match all the way through, the 1st being very tight, serve after serve being held, untill eventually i managed to pull through on the tie break. The first set was the key, i havnt of won the first set it would had been an up hill struggle, by winning the 1st i blew Fernandez's confidence and was sailing through the second, untill she decided to play like the 1st set again, i think she was just free hitting. I lost all concentration and struggled to finish her off. So it came down to the tie break again. Overall was a great match, with lots of tention and suprises. I think people on tour are starting to realise i'm not just here to play, buit i'm here to win. Welldone to Fernandez she played a great game.<br />I'm looking forward to the Quarter Finals, playing Spencer will be difficult, but i'll give it my all."
What an awful day for Barbara <img src="frown.gif" border="0">
Hope I can do better next time <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
Poor Lara also, but<br />WE NEVER GIVE UP!

Paul cant post results today
Spencer bt. Wong 6-3 6-3
Wong´s dream ends.. and Spencer´s dream continues. Great play and this is her most difficult match at the moment <img src="eek.gif" border="0">
Paterson bt. Delacour 6-3 1-6 6-4
Roland Garros semifinalist couldnt beat the strong game of Paterson
Carolina Spencer of Venezuela qualified today to the finals of one of the most important events in the Junio Circuit... the Orange Bowl.
Spencer who comes of beating world #1 Marta Maria Conde Martinez hasnt lost more than 6 games in all the matches she has played. and will face tomorrow surprisive Lindzi Paterson who today beat France´s Fleur Delacour in 3 sets.
Meanwhile in doubles the newcomer Natalya Dlhopolcova and experienced Anna Kournikova-Elia have reached the doubles final after beating second seeds Adeva and Messay. They will face t he new pairing of Japan´s Shizu Katsumi and Mexico´s Ana Maria Herrera who come of beating in the semifinals Carolina Mutola and Catherine Pierce.
A comfortable win for the new pairing. The irony is that together Elia and Katsumi were crap, but apart are fine doubles players. Dlhopolcova will be big in teh near future, while Katsumi wins her first title in weeks.
Paterson bt Spencer 75 16 62
The doubles partners wnt at it full blast on centre court in a very tight encounter. The first set could have gone either way, with Paterson just claiming it with a cross-court back-hand. Spencer seemed tired, and used up her last remaining strenght in the 2nd set where she was amazing. Paterson broke twice early in the 3rd set to seal a 75 26 61 win.

Spencer loses meanwhile Herrera ties and makes new record
Venezuela´s Carolina Spencer couldnt continue with her excellent streak this week in the 2001 edition of the Orange Bowl as British Linzi Paterson beat her in 3 sets of 7-5 1-6 6-2. Spencer who came to this final after beating likes of Conde Martinez and Wong said "I am sad that I lost this final but I am possitive as I had a great week".
In doubles Japan´s Shizu Katsumi and Mexico´s Ana Maria Herrera claimed their first title together as they beat newcomer Natalya Dlhopolcova and Anna Kournikova-Elia 6-2 6-4. Herrera with this oppened a new record in the FWTT jrs including before the computers scratched... this record is playing 4 Grade A finals which is very important and also tied Daniela Turundzhov´s record of winning 3 grade A´s.
Herrera won Wimbledon singles, Roland Garros and Orange Bowl doubles. Meanwhile Turundzhov won doubles in Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Herrera was runner-up in doubles at Wimbledon.
Next week´s event is held in Mexico, grade 1 Yucatan Cup.
Q: Congratulations on reaching a grade A final in your first junior event Natalya. You must be surprised?
A: Yeah, I'm a little bit surprised. I was happy with my game the whole week really, and I had a lot of fun playing with Anna. It was nice to reach the finals here, it was above my expectations definetly.
Q: What happened in the final? Not quite as close as your previous matches?
A: Well, we were just outplayed by a more experienced team I think. We had some tough matches beforehand and were able to get through them, but today they just seemed to have the answer to our game plan, so I guess there wasn't too much we could have done.
Q: Where do you go next?
A: I'll be playing the Yucatan Cup next week, doubles with Anna again, whcih I am looking forward to. Hopefully we can keep playing well.
Q: Any more expectations now after this week?
A: No, I mean I could lose first round next week and still take something positive from it as long as I feel that I played fairly well and gave it my all. That's all you can do really. I felt my singles play was good this week but I just ran into someone who was able to be a bit more mentally tough in the end when it mattered. I just want more experience, because that will be the key to coming through in those matches in the future.
Q: THanks Natalya.
