View Full Version : Concerning the "American Amazon Five", records vs. other players

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:04 PM
I can only think of one player who has an even or better record against all five. Anyone know who I'm thinking of??? There may even be more than that.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:07 PM
Is it Martina Hingis that has a better record? If so, many of those victories (except Seles) were 2000 and previous.

I have never been a Hingis fan. As a matter of fact , she is my favorite player to cheer against...but I want her back B I G !!! Tennis needs her right now. Her style of play, carefree attitude and the fact that she is the complete opposite of every player out there right now.

Comeback Martina, stronger and better than ever.

I might even root for you a bit, here and there!

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:09 PM
Venus, Serena, Jen, Monica, and Lindsay.

No I think Hingis has a losing record to Lindsay, like 11-14 or something.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:14 PM
Well i don't think any active player is going to have a better record against Venus, Serena, Jen, Monica, and Lindsay than Swiss Miss Hingis!

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:30 PM
Well Serena has a good record against Venus, Martina, Jen, and Lindsay....

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:39 PM
Yeah but Serena is one of the Amazons...the biggest of the bunch @ the moment.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:51 PM
And Martina isn't American.

Hmmm. Martina is the only one I can think of. Juju: No. Kim: No. Jelena: Hell no. Amelie: Um, I don't think so

Martina is

10-9 against Venus

6-7 against Serena

5-4 against Jen

14-4 aaginst Monica

10-14 against Lindsay

She's 3-2 in total head-to heads agaist the "American Amazons" as you call them.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:52 PM
I know one retired player who has an even or better record against the "Big 5"...in fact, she leads the head-to-head against all of them except Serena, with whom she's tied.

Can't think of any active players that have such a record though.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:55 PM
Arantxa could.

Jul 11th, 2002, 10:58 PM
No, Arantxa has a horrible record against Monica. Not sure what her head-to-head is against the others.

Jul 11th, 2002, 11:00 PM
Retired players as well? Then I'd have to say Steffi. Not sure though.

Jul 11th, 2002, 11:03 PM
Steffi owned Jenny
I think she has a winning record against Venus
Im sure she has one against Monica
A losing one against Serena
& i dunno about Lindsay

Jul 11th, 2002, 11:27 PM
I was referring to Steffi in my original post, and actually, she does not have a losing record to Serena, or any of those listed for that matter.

Steffi's record is:

1-1 vs. Serena

3-2 vs. Venus

10-1 vs. Jennifer

10-5 vs. Monica

8-6 vs. Lindsay

7-2 vs. Martina (I just threw in Hingis for good measure).

Quite an impressive record overall.

Jul 11th, 2002, 11:29 PM
Steffi rocks :D

Jul 11th, 2002, 11:44 PM
Damn I miss Steffi!!!

Jul 12th, 2002, 03:17 AM
Yeah, I was thinking of Steffi when I posted the thread. Nice pick up guys.

Besides Steffi and Martina, are there even players who have beaten all five at some point????

I guess Arantxa probably has??? I think Justine has beaten all but Lindsay. Novotna also may have beaten all 5.

Jul 12th, 2002, 03:43 AM
ASV has beaten all five.

Jul 12th, 2002, 03:44 AM
Mary Pierce might have beaten all five as well (?)

Jul 12th, 2002, 04:37 AM
You're right Kart, I hadn't even thought of Mary, she has beaten all 5.

Jana never beat Serena, she retired in the third set of their only match.

So right now we have four who have beaten all 5:
Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, and Mary Pierce

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:27 AM
Steffi Graf: retired
Martina Hingis: injured but when she comes back she'll be kicking everybody's arse.
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario: would take a miracle for her to play as good as she used to
Mary Pierce: Mary Pierce has the power game to match them but is too incosistent, that match at wimby 6-1 6-1 loss to serena says it all but she still has a chance to get into good form

Jul 12th, 2002, 06:47 AM
When did Pierce beat Capriati?

Jul 12th, 2002, 06:58 AM
Jennifer leads Pierce 3-0

Jennifer Capriati (USA) vs. Mary Pierce (FRA)
1992-05-25 Roland Garros Clay R16 Jennifer Capriati (USA) 6-4 6-3
1993-05-24 Roland Garros Clay R16 Jennifer Capriati (USA) 6-4 7-6(6)
2002-05-13 Rome Clay R16 Jennifer Capriati (USA) 6-0 6-0

Yeah, Steffi is probably the only woman to have played them all and not possess a losing record against any one of them.

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:18 PM
If she did'nt retire yet, Lindsay should have turn arround that close head between the two of them.

if I may remember, she retires with a loss from Lindsay.
Also a close match match at French Open 1999 should have even them at 7-7

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:24 PM
She did retire soon after the Wimbledon loss to Lindsay but Steffi was no where close to her best then. If Steffi was at her best then, she'd have won that Wimbledon & have a much better record against the quote "Amazons"

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:30 PM
Was not at her best winning the french Open????

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:33 PM
Steffi was not at her best anymore from the moment she returned in feb 98, her whole attitude was different, of course she still won a grand slam but that's because she rules

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:35 PM
queenlindsay she was joking with the crowd during that match at the french, do you think steffi in her prime would have done that? yeah right!

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:40 PM
I'm not taking away anything from Steffi for she is really one of the best, but dont take away anything from lindsay too. Lindsay was playing one of her best at that time. I saw that match and from what i see, she really played well and very relax considering how she underestimate Lindsay on clay. On the other hand at wimbledon, I dont thing she wants to retire with a loss. Obiously she tried her best to win that. But sorry Lindsay was a better player at that time.

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:41 PM
I stand corrected on Mary Pierce.

Actually Capriati stands in the way of others who want to claim the same honours - Irina Spirlea and Mary Joe Fernandez have beaten them all apart from JenCap.

Natalie Tauziat has beaten them all apart from Monica .

There is one other I could find who did have victories over all five - which goes to show how underrated a player she is - none other than the recently retired Sandrine Testud .

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:45 PM
She was not at her best at all in RG. I think she was winning a lot of matches on natural talent & pure Guile. Not to mention the fact she is an incredible athlete & if anyone would know how to win a GS, what ever their current form, it would be Steffi.

If she was at her best, she would have won the final with ease.

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:49 PM
Whoa, never knew that about Sandrine! I thought she had wins over all of them but Lindsay.

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:50 PM
Lindsay played really well that final in wimbledon and especially served really, really well.
I am the last to deny that but Steffi was not mentally there, it was over! that's was so clear that day!

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:52 PM
Yeah right, she would have done that skill vs Monica in 91,92,93. the stabbing would have been prevented.

Lets get things straight.

I agree that Steffi is one of the greatest and its very hard to surpass her record if ever one will. So i guess with that closed 8-6 record vs Lindsay, six times she dont played well.

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:56 PM
Sandrine is VERY underrated IMO.

Sandrine has:

1 win over Venus
2 wins over Lindsay
3 wins over Monica
3 wins over Serena
4 wins over Jennifer

Jul 12th, 2002, 05:59 PM
with the attitude of the french open 99, she maybe had not choked 5 setpoints away and had not made 66 unforced errors in the other, so true!

Jul 12th, 2002, 06:22 PM
Well, its agreed that Steffi RETIRED with a good record over the "Fab 5". Something tells me it wouldn't be looking as great today if she had continued to play. Just a hunch.

Jul 12th, 2002, 06:30 PM
we don't know that but it was good that she retired since she has something much better now!

Jul 12th, 2002, 08:07 PM
*boogies for Sandrine*

Jul 12th, 2002, 08:09 PM
(won't mention her Martina record ever though, k? :))

Jul 12th, 2002, 08:12 PM
LOL! I think it's 0-16, most of them(if not all)were straight setters too.

Jul 12th, 2002, 08:13 PM
shhhh :)

lol, Sandrine should have stayed on the tour... if only to get at least one win over Martina... ;)

That record is...
