Congrats Justine! :worship: First Tier I title since I can't remember... (okay I know she won her last in Berlin in 2005, but it seems ages ago!). Brilliant tennis from both towards the end of the match... Especially that Justine's service game at 5 all 2nd set. Some great points there! :yeah::cool:

Good week for Jelena. :)

Great match from these two. Justine was too tough in clinch moments and went for her shots while Jankovic was settled on retrieving. The last two games really made the match, and Justine proved that the mentally tougher player gets the apple.

Jankovic impressed me today with her variety, and her fight. Justine is showing her jitters again closing out matches. If only JJ had weapons to beat JuJu with besides that GORGEOUS backhand down the line. Great winner

High level tennis. Justine was patchy mentally but that's to be expected.

I expected straight sets as Justine is the superior player, but Jankovic is very talented.

I thought this was quite a messy match. Some great play mixed with bad play, but it did get really good at the end.

Overall, Justine's forehand didn't look good to me. Very inconsistent especially in the first set. Her backhand was there to save her. Hopefully, the shoulder isn't a big problem. She complained about it back in Wimbledon after her match against Serena.

I may be in the minority in thinking that this was not a high quality match between 2 of my favorite players...at least not throughout. The last few games were fantastic though.

JJ looked beat the moment she stepped on court...both physically and mentally. Not a huge surprise to those who've been following her play the last few weeks. But it wasn't like Justine was playing nearly her best either, so no excuses there. The 2 of them saved the entertainment value of the match in the 2nd set, and one of my faves won, so I can't complain too much :)

Very entertaining match, not the best quality IMO, Justine making too many errors.
Jelena fought hard and hit some  shots, Juju hit those too especially towards the end. It was extremely fun to watch at times, sometimes the match seemed too long- I couldn't keep my concentration  and forgot the score

btw.Jelena clapped a lot, but was it necessary to clap after that CC ace from Justine? Jelena herself hit a couple of those. But it was an important point so maybe that was the reason why Jelena clapped after the ace.

Well done, girls! Must have been exhausting for you, even in two sets.

Congrats Justine ! :yeah: but I don't think it was your normal high standard apart from a few shots. Sometimes it was like she was out there practising and saying to herself "now what happens if I do this"? Her forehand was really off today .... eventually in the final 2 games she upped her level, but it wasn't 100% Justine. At least she won in 2! :bounce:

Jelena needs to hire a sports psychologist because she's embarrassing herself everytime she goes on court with Henin, 4-1 first set and 4-2 second set. All those second serves just punched back into court, Henin would have been really pressed and more than likely beaten by either Venus, Serena or Maria in this match, shame JJ has little belief in herself. BTW, How on earth was that the best match of the year, it was as predictable as Serena pulling out of New Haven, people blab on about the suspense in their matches, I never feel excited or expectant, because I always knoew the outcome, JJ gets a break lead in a set about 3 times, relinquishes it tamely each time, then has countless opportunities to take the set regardless of her wobbles, but loses around 100 BPs, gives Henin a game point which she takes 1st time. And the next set sees a similar pattern, if it goes to a third then she goes 4-0 then chokes. yawn.

I'm not sure why so many people are on Jelena's case today? Yeah, she hasn't had the belief in herself, but I don't think she lost for lack of belief. More for lack of concentration and Justine being tenacious and simply better. She certainly tried!

Break points, Henin 5/17 (29%) and Jelena 4/12 (33%). Don't understand why some of you said Jelena had so many chances and choked. It's Henin had more chances but couldn't convert it. In some of your words, Justine choked.

I can't find much fault in Henin's 131-19 hardcourt record and her 17th hardcourt victory of her 29 titles since her ascent in 2003 as being negative.

There's really not much stopping Henin from being YE #1 for 3 of the past five years since her ascent in 2003.

The diminutive Belgian has killed power tennis in the WTA.

Interesting stats, therefore, since 2003 Justine has been the best player on tour! If only she did not have that awful virus infection. But then, thats life.

Without a doubt. I checked the numbers for Clijsters, Davenport and both Williams sisters.

She's reached the semifinals 51 times of the 59 tournaments she's played since 2003.

She's reached the finals 38 times of the 59 tournaments she's played since 2003.

She won 29 of the 38 times she reached the finals in tournaments she's played since 2003.

Let's look at the numbers year-by-year:

2007 (FO Champion, #1 Ranking, USO TBD, YEC TBD)
Tournaments Played (10)
Semifinals (10)
Finals (7)

2006 (#1 YE Ranking, FO Champion, YEC Winner)
Tournaments Played (13)
Semifinals (12)
Finals (10)

2005 (FO Champion)
Tournaments Played (9)
Semifinals (5)
Finals (5)

2004 (Olympic Champion, AO Champion)
Tournaments Played (9)
Semifinals (7)
Finals (5)

2003 (#1 YE Ranking, French and USO Champion)
Tournaments Played (18)
Semifinals (17)
Finals (11)

Grand Slam Singles Victories since Henin's Ascent in 2003:

J. Henin (6) Olympic Gold (1)
S. Williams (4)
V. Williams (2)
M. Sharapova (2)

There seems to be an overwhelming perception that Justine is only a clay court player. However, her hardcourt results would surprise many since her ascent in 2003. Henin has won more tournaments on hardcourt than she has clay  :

Henin vs Today's Top 20 Since Her Ascent in 2003 (78-18):

Maybe I have been watching too much mens tennis lately and that's why I dare to say that with this kind of serve Justine won't win the US Open. Not that this tournaments says anything about the form she will bring in NYC, but the problems with her serve need to be solved quickly, especially considering that there will be a new quicker surface in Flushing Meadows. Otherwise her game was  as usual despite some unforced errors.
Jelena's serve also needs some serious work, but I guess serve will never be her strongest point.
Overall a good match from both.

Good match, took along time to catch fire though. Henin hit a couple of cross-court backhands towards the end that were just unbelievable...Strong favourite for the open I think. JJ isn't a good front runner in big matches, she needs to find some more belief from somewhere.

Great match, congrats Justine :clap2:

Jelena's problem is her serve, she wins so few free points on it, she's always in danger of being broken, so you just knew when she led 4-1 in the 1st and 4-2 in the 2nd, that Justine would probably fight back and win the set, and she did

Wow, some of those rallies toward the end, especially that infamous 5-5 game on Justine's serve. One thing that is not fair to say about Jelena is that she lies over against Justine, she was playing her heart out and Justine was just too good. But I don't think either player choked away anything. They were both at a high level and it was great to watch.

She was off in that first set. I can't believe anyone who watched that match would say Justine played consistently good. Her forehand was a mess but she still hang on and got that set.

I agree that she turned it when she was 3 - 4 down in the second.

Jelena came close again and couldnt close it out again. The main reasons for that are that she cant get easy points on her first serve and that Henin could put her second serves away just like she did on the 6th match point. The other reason is Jankovic's FH, it is just too weak to keep up with Henin's pace. She cant create too much power of it and it mostly lacks precision as well. She made a lot of errors with it yesterday.

If Jelena cant improve her serve and her FH, she wont beat Henin and she wont win a slam. Sad, but true. Only a BH cant win you a Slam.

I think Jelena is really so smart and so talented. She brings out the absolute best and bravest play from Justine my great champion. Both girls bring so much to the tour. Jelena lost the match but she played so well that it's not fair to call her a loser or to lambaste her. That's just putting her down and taking away credit from Justine who executed incredible shots and showed her unique ability for mental toughness and concentration. Of course, both girls will make mistakes. This is DUE TO THE QUALITY OF YOUR OPPONENT!!! those who don't understand this don't understand tennis whatsoever.

Jelena  :hearts:
