As many posters have joined Tennis Poker for the first time and there are a few new rules, I think it’s a good idea to organize a test tournament before the season starts.

From December 7th on, all the singles players will take part to a special exhibition where the 2001 average values will be used to decide the results. You’ll have the chance to test your picks in a real contest and to see a practical example of how the rules work. I will explain step by step all I do to prepare the tournament and decide the final outcome.

The ultimate deadline for signing up or changing the picks is still December 30th. After the exhibition is completed, you’ll still have plenty of time to substitute some players or to enter the game for the first time. The exhibition results will be considered to decide the seeds, the direct entries and the wild cards of the first leg, but the ranking points won’t be added to the 2002 total score.

During the 2002 season, new entrants will be welcome in the singles. As I have always done, “team changes and new entrants” threads will be posted 1-2 weeks before the start of a new leg, and they will be included as soon as the new draw will be released.

But, as its structure includes some eliminations round after round, it’s impossible to join the team event after the competition has started. If you haven’t signed up before December 30th, you’re out.

This exhibition will also include a test run for the teams who will have completed the registration within next week. As it seems we will have 7-8 teams for a total of 35-40 players, I think I will settle for 3 eliminations per leg, with 11-16 posters remaining at the end of the game. Of course the three eliminations in this exhibition will only be virtual ones, and all the players will be regularly at the beginning in January.

So, see you next week for The Christmas Special Exhibition!

Polishprodigy,
the spare cards are picked by me randomly among the best players who haven't been included in any combination. Their values are considered in your combination if a players (e.g. Kanepi) doesn't compete. It's unlikely Kapros will be a spare card, as they are probably going to be at least top 50 players. As soon as the exhibition goes on, the spare cards feature is one of the first things I will post, and I'm sure everything will be clearer when you see a practical example of how it works.

Ok, so I can change my picks after the exhibition when we start playing for real? Because Kanepi might not be that good of a choice, as she hardly ever plays. And yes, I have been granted a conditional Belgian passport and citizenship for as long as I play Tennis Poker I hope the citizens of Belgium (The Belgian team) will accept me!

Polishprodigy,
of course, the ultimate deadline for the 2002 season is December 30th, before that date you can make all the substitutions you would like to. I haven't started compiling the results yet, after some last minute entries I'm still working on other things; so, if you hurry up changing your picks I may consider your new team for this exhibition too.

THE SPARE CARDS!

The highest ranked players who haven’t been chosen are:

#14 - Silvia Farina-Elia
#17 - Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
#22 - Lisa Raymond
#24 - Rita Grande
#27 - Paola Suarez
#29 - Tamarine Tanasugarn
#30 - Ai Sugiyama

#32 - Cristina Torrens-Valero
#33 - Anne Kremer
#34 - Lina Krasnoroutskaya
#36 - Elena Likhovtseva
#40 - Tatiana Panova
#41 - Gala Leon-Garcia
#43 - Marlene Weingartner

As the draw is made, each poster is assigned a couple of players (one from the first 7 group, one from the other), so that nobody has the same combination of two.
The spare cards are included in your hand only if one of the players in your combination doesn’t compete in the entire leg and so doesn’t get a value.
The spare cards may be used to resolve ties too. We will see if this exhibition needs this; if not, I will add a few examples of possible ties after I’ve posted all the results.

So, let’s take a look at the spare cards for this exhibition.

As we said, the joker assumes the value which gives you the best possible result according to the other cards in your hand. Not necessarily the best possible result is given by an Ace, the highest value. All these 4 posters were able to score a straight thenks to the particular values of their other 4 cards.

James
Dementieva / Hantuchova / Nagyova / V.Williams / Martinez
8 / 8 / @ / K / 9
@ = 8

The best possible result for James was a three of a kind, giving a 8 value to Henrieta.
Curiously enough, Nagyova’s average value was 8 indeed.

THE SPARE CARDS!

Fabiola Zuluaga is the only player who didn’t get a value during the 2001 season.
So, let’s take a detailed look at what has happened to the combination of the two posters who selected her, Braveheart and Adrian.

Braveheart
Davenport / V.Williams / Hingis / Schiavone / Zuluaga
A / K / J / 7 / -

Braveheart
Schiavone / <s>Zuluaga</s> TANASUGARN / Davenport / V.Williams / Hingis
7 / 7 / A / K / J

So, the spare card Tamarine allowed Braveheart to score a pair instead of a no combintion hand.

Adrian
S.Williams / Hingis / Tulyaganova / Reeves / Zuluaga
Q / J / 8 / 6 / -

Adrian
S.Williams / Hingis / Tulyaganova / <s>Zuluaga</s> SUGIYAMA / Reeves
Q / J / 8 / 7 / 6

Unluckily, Adrian’s spare cards don’t help him that much.
In order to score a pair, he should have drawn a joker (Farina-Elia, Panova, Krasnoroutskaya) or one out of Torrens-Valero, Kremer, Likhovtseva, Leon-Garcia.

At this point, we've seen the values, the jokers and the spare card substitutions. I'll be back tomorrow with the tournament results!

Once we have seen who the winner is, I'll post a few examples of ties, the complete ranking with a detailed look at a bunch of results, the entry list for the first tournament in January.

Note that the ranking has some slight differences from the tournament results, because the ranking considers the hand total value while the tournament outcome is decided only upon the poker combinations. For example, Per4ever was last but one in the qualifying round but finds himself a little bit higher in the ranking because he hadn’t an Ace to keep up with Rocketta and M_Pierce fan but had better card values overall.

TOURNAMENT SCORES

Tournament points:
250 - Winner
200 - Runner-up
150 - Semifinalists
100 - Quarterfinalists
50 - 2nd round
25 - Qualifying round winners

As there wasn’t any complete ranking before the exhibition, I couldn’t assign any bonus for victories over higher ranked players.

PERFORMANCE SCORES

Card values
Ace - 14
King - 13
Queen - 12
Jack - 11
10 - 10
9 - 9
and so on...

Combination factors
30 - Straight Flush
15 - Four of a Kind
10 - Full House
7 - Flush
5 - Straight
4 - Three of a Kind
3 - Two Pairs
2 - Pair
1 - No combination

There have been 6 different types of combinations in this exhibition, let’s take a look at one example for each kind.

Tim Wilson
Capriati / Seles / S.Williams / Henin / Mauresmo
Q / Q / Q / 10 / 10
Hand total value: 12 + 12 + 12 + 10 + 10 = 56
Combination factor: full house, 10
Performance score: 56 x 10 = 560
Tournament result: winner, 250 pts
Overall score: 560 + 250 = 810

Beckl
Davenport / Clijsters / Dokic / Nagyova / Henin
A / K / Q / @ / 10
Hand total value: 14 + 13 + 12 + 11 + 10 = 60
Combination factor: straight, 5
Performance score: 60 x 5 = 300
Tournament result: 2nd round + qualies, 50 + 25
Overall score: 300 + 50 + 25 = 375

James
Dementieva / Hantuchova / Nagyova / V.Williams / Martinez
8 / 8 / @ / K / 9
Hand total value: 8 + 8 + 8 + 13 + 9 = 46
Combination factor: three of a kind, 4
Performance score: 46 x 4 = 184
Tournament result: 1st round loss + qualies, 0 + 25
Overall score: 184 + 25 = 209

Susie
Clijsters / V.Williams / Henin / Testud / S.Williams
K / K / 10 / 10 / Q
Hand total value: 13 + 13 + 10 + 10 + 12 = 58
Combination factor: two pairs, 3
Performance score: 58 x 3 = 174
Tournament result: 1st round loss, 0
Overall score: 174 + 0 = 174

Bulgar
Coetzer / Maleeva / Davenport / Pierce / Nola
9 / 9 / A / 5 / 4
Hand total value: 9 + 9 + 14 + 5 + 4 = 41
Combination factor: pair, 2
Performance score: 41 x 2 = 82
Tournament result: lost in the qualies, 0
Overall score: 82 + 0 = 82

RayRob
Davenport / Clijsters / Seles / Henin / Mikaelian
A / K / Q / 10 / 9
Hand total value: 14 + 13 + 12 + 10 + 9 = 58
Combination factor: no combination, 1
Performance score: 58 x 1 = 58
Tournament result: 1st round loss, 0
Overall score: 58 + 0 = 58

Note that Ray Rob’s hand mere value was better than the tournament winner’s one, but the combination simply was not there. On the other hand, Bulgar’s 41 was the lowest of all, but having scored a pair guarantees a higher spot in the ranking thanks to the combination factor.

3 out of 4 had a joker as best value, so Poe is down to #4; despite the excellent tournament result, he would have lost if he had played one of the other three.
Comparing the second spare card, Beckl is first followed by AlexSydney and The Pea.

ManuelanMaggieLover,
it was a very brilliant performance, the qualifying round was tough and you were able to upset the 7th seed Arne who has always been a great Tennis Poker player.

Henrieta is doing great things for me already. I am glad I chose her. Too bad I had such an excellent first round opponent.

Adrian,
ok, I will update your team.

James,
I think Henrieta is a clever choice, she often plays lower Tier tournaments when she performs consistently at high level, so I'm sure she's going to guarantee very good values.
