Just amazing today Zi :hearts: She hit so hard, so flat, so well - she barely made any unforced errors today - I don't know the exact statistic, but it was a single digit!

Ana made MANY unforced errors, but Zi did not let up, congratulations Zi :worship: Your ranking should sky-rocket next week!

Continue, keep going Zi! :hearts:

Best career victory for Zi, for sure!!

OMFG :speakles: this is one of the best results of 2007 for me
I was so sad earlier today when Na withdrew USO :crying: but now I am so happy

Ana came in white hot with wins over Jankovic and Petrova in LA Tier II ... plus she is the defending champ at this event ... Zi Yan came into this match as the HUGE UNDERDOG, as an ALTERNATE that didn't even qualify for the qualifying draw based on her ranking and never having beaten a top 10 player, let alone a top 5 player in her career ... now she holds the record for the best win ever by a Chinese player by defeating World #4 Ana Ivanovic (previously held by Na Li when she defeated World #5 Kim Clijsters in Miami 2007) ... and she didn't just BEAT ANA, she did it with AUTHORITY :bounce:

she is no longer the qualification queen now :p
she has MADE IT in the MAIN DRAW :woohoo: KEEP GOING ... I think Shaughnessy is next and that is certainly a winnable match ;)

all those posters that wrote off Zi Yan in my thread from yesterday and said Ana would defeat Zi easily  :nerner: YOU ARE EATING CROW NOW

adrigf is going to be bouncing off the walls once he finds out this result when he comes home from work today :help:

Near the start of the second (nearly), it was:
Ana 11 W - 16 UE
Zi 5 W - 3 UE

Zi just returned very well, was very aggressive off the returns, played very flat as usual, and it was too much for Ana  I don't think she expected this kind of speed.

So she just generally outplayed Ivanovic on every level? Did Zi manage to keep Ana off balance so that she couldn't set up for her shots (which she needs for that forehand to work most of the time)?

Why do people make excuses for this "mentally tough" girl and claim she is "tired"? LAUGHABLE. If she was so tired, why didn't she withdraw? She got blasted, fair and square. I guess if she hangs on long enough until Henin/ The Williamses/ Davenport finally quit, she might have a chance of winning a Slam. people that saw the match please give us some more details of what it was like THANKS

I just updated my signature to include Zi's first Top 10 win

Ana looked misleaded in the first set, because Zi was returning very well, and being the aggressor - I don't know if she expected Zi to hit so hard and accurate.
And then after the first set, her coach told her to mix it up, throw in topspin and all, but she didn't do that.
Zi just kept her composure, and lived it point to point, raising her fist subtely after every point she won. Very focused.
And she just you know, played very consistent - yet hard-hitting - tennis, which frustrated Ivanovic, I guess
That's what it seemed like to me.

I don't think Ana got a serious jetlag.
Let's see what she said to medias on Tuesday in Toronto:

Q. You feel pressure to defend your title? I mean, you have a lot of points in play this week.

ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely a little more pressure on. But still I feel confident about my game at the moment. I'm really, really happy to be back here, and this is a great tournament. So I'm just going to try to play the best I can and play each match and see how it goes. But, definitely, I'm very excited to be back.

This really is a strange result. I don't suppose any of us will ever know the true story of what went on in this match. Was Ana just so tired, and effected by injuries that this was the best she could do? Or was this a conscious decision to tank made before she even started to match? Or perhaps Ana started this match feeling great but just matched up badly against Yan's playing style. Of maybe Ana started out intending to win but after losing the 1st set deciding that it would be unwise to put in the effect needed if she was to win in three. It really is hard to understand especially as she was the defending champion.

Hopefully it is just a case of her deciding she needed more of a rest, but to tank in the 1st round of a Tier I in which you are the defending champion is quite unusual. I certainly wouldn't make any conclusive judgements personally. Nothing really totally adds up comfortably.

I would say, however, that providing Ana is healthy by the start of the US Open, and while I suspect she will be I wouldn't be 100% sure, but providing she is, this match should have no bearing at all on Ana's US Open success and she is still in my mind one of the top 2 or 3 girls most likely to win the trophy.

Nope, she doesn't :p

Why do people make excuses for this "mentally tough" girl and claim she is "tired"? LAUGHABLE. If she was so tired, why didn't she withdraw? She got blasted, fair and square. I guess if she hangs on long enough until Henin/ The Williamses/ Davenport finally quit, she might have a chance of winning a Slam. (Can somebody imagine future great champions eating crow like this, tired or not?)

BTW, I don't think it's Yan's career best win. Well, winning a match easily against a top player like Ana Ivanovic is definitely good to build up her confidence. But it's only a second round match.
And I'm afraid the situation for Yan will be very dangerous in her 3rd round match. As I have known, many Chinese players would lose their next match after defeating a top player. Hopefully she can fight all the way through to the final and give us her real career best.

Um, I think it was a combination of Zi hitting the ball better than I've ever seen her hit it before, and Ana committing too many errors.

Near the start of the second (nearly), it was:
Ana 11 W - 16 UE
Zi 5 W - 3 UE

Zi just returned very well, was very aggressive off the returns, played very flat as usual, and it was too much for Ana  I don't think she expected this kind of speed.

Zi was very aggressive and moving Ana around. Her return game was so on as well.

I watched the last few mins of the match.:)
Zi played really well today. :yeah: Her returns are unexpectedly flat and deep.

Thanks for all the info about the match. I'm so happy for Zi! :hearts:  :p :D

I can't believe Ana lost to Yan. I wonder what really happened to Ana. I attended the match and I can tell you that this was NOT our Ana on the court today. She played really bad tennis. No motivation at all. No energy. No nice shots on the lines. OK I know she may be a little tired after winning last week but hey aren't players used to play two weeks in a row in Melbourne, Paris, Wimbledon and New York? Aren't they used to play 10 days in a row in Miami and Indian Wells? I don't think it's just a question of being tired. I saw Ana earlier today during her practice and she was hitting some very very nice shots with her coach. She seemed ready for her match. Now believe me I don't want to talk against Ana. She is my favorite player by far right now. But is it possible that she HAD to play the Rogers Cup and didn't want to? What do you think? Maybe THEY asked her to at least be in Toronto for a couple of days. Like Anna Chakvetadze who finally pulled out after a couple of points. Anyways, I'm glad I could see her practice this morning. I took a lot of good pictures so it made my day. But I'm really sad because it's already over for this year...

While Ivanovic seems really dedicated to preparing for the USO, defending her title could have assured her a Top 4 seeding. However, aside from Henin, the only players that could seriously destroy Ana aren't even in the Top 4 (i.e. Serena and Venus).

That performance from Ana was :help:. It's like what they used to say about Goolagong...going on "walkabout," except Ana sometimes does this for entire matches. She looked sluggish and seemed to struggle with how early Zi was taking her shots too. She did NOT look like she consciously tanked this match.

Zi has a great return of serve, which came in handy since Ana didn't serve particularly well today. She also raised her level towards the middle of the 2nd set when she saw she could take this match in her own hands. All credit to her.

I used excuse she did, she wrote she felt jet-lagged and hoped it would go away by the time the match would be played. Looks like it didn't especially hearing from people who saw this match.

Anyway I'm not losing too much sleep over this defeat. And I'm not gonna interrupt your celebration either. Enjoy it.

Oh and if she's to reaching GS finals then losing 1st rounds just to reach SF or do better in another one as is the case from May this year, I'm taking it.

Actually Ana did not use an excuse other than Yan played better than her to her credit. But I'm assuming you had not seen her interview as of that post.

After having seen the match Ana certainly didn't tank. She just got caught off guard by how early Yan was taking the ball. She didn't really give Ana time to set up her shots. Obviously Ana didn't play her best otherwise she would have won but Yan's play had lots to do with it. She wasn't lights out with her forehand like she was against Jankovic and Petrova though I tend to think she was much better than normal with her forehand in those two matches since she was rarely missing no matter what kind of shot she went for. That was quite the run on sentence.

Just because she made semis at Wimbledon after a first round loss doesn't mean it will happen again. And if it does of course you would be fine with the early loss here. Either way losing first match of a Tier I as defending champ can't be considered the greatest preparation even coming off a win the week prior.

And I did enjoy or loss though I didn't enjoy watching it since I think Ana is boring to watch personally and I don't like watching two-handed forehand players either. I like seeing Ana lost more than actually watching her lose unless it is to a player I like but since everyone I like sucks but Anna C. that doesn't happen often.

While there is no way of predicting that, I don't agree with posters that think she won't be just because she lost a match in Toronto after winning a tournament in LA, and flying over 3000 miles to get there. I am not using jet-lag as an excuse but either way she just couldn't find her A game today and she really needed it!

I think Ana will be #1 at some point in the next 2 years, but that's just my educated guess.

And I never said you cared about my feelings on Ana. Nor did I say I expect her to lose matches like this consistently. I do think she will always have her fair share of early round losses because of the way she plays but she has been relatively consistent of late.
