Five More Top 20 Stars Enter Field As Direct Acceptance List Announced;
Farina Elia, Smashnova, Maleeva, Schnyder, Shaughnessy Among Additions

NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 8, 2002 – The player field for Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Michelob Light, A USTA Event, added a solid contingent of top-20 and top-30-ranked players to its main draw as the Sanex WTA Tour today released the official acceptance list for the tournament, set for August 16-24 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. The field now includes a hearty 15 of the world’s top-20-ranked professionals, including five of the top 10.

Included among the new entries are No. 14 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, No. 16 Anna Smashnova of Israel, No. 17 Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, No. 19 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, No. 20 Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, No. 22 Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, No. 23 Anne Kremer of Luxembourg and No. 24 Tatiana Panova of Russia. They have all earned direct entry into the main draw, based on their respective rankings as of June 24. The tournament retains three main draw wild cards which will be awarded the week before the event.

The “cut-off” ranking for the 19 direct entries in the main draw is No. 23 (Panova’s ranking as of June 24), meaning that the player ranked No. 24 on that date (Tamarine Tanasugarn) was unable to earn a spot in the main draw and currently must qualify to enter. Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario (No. 32) has a special “Gold Exempt” status, earning her entry into the main draw. The 19 main draw entries hail from 14 different countries.

The qualifying event will feature an unprecedented 20 of the top 50 players in the world. Six qualifiers will advance through the 48-player qualifying draw, which is scheduled to include some familiar names, including Iva Majoli of Croatia, Austrian Barbara Schett and Americans Lisa Raymond and Alexandra Stevenson.

“The fact that 15 of the top 20 players in the world have entered the Pilot Pen shows that New Haven has become a ‘can’t-miss’ stop on Tour,” said Anne Worcester, tournament director. “The field has star power at the top with Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin and Jelena Dokic, and a solid base of main draw players which includes every player ranked from No. 9 to No. 20.”

Other headliners already committed to the Pilot Pen Tennis field include three-time defending champion and current world No. 2 Williams, Dokic (No. 6), Henin (No. 7), Davenport (No. 9), Amelie Mauresmo (No. 10), Sandrine Testud (No. 11), Daniela Hantuchova (No. 12), Elena Dementieva (No. 13), Anastasia Myskina (No. 15), and Daja Bedanova (No. 18).

The 19 main draw entries hail from 14 different countries.

isn't that great?!

Jul 10th, 2002, 03:46 PM
I bet there's some sort of plump appearance fee
involved;but who cares right? It was always
a half regular event/half exhibition. I suppose
there's also more money since they dropped the
ATP event. :) Pilot Pen's always been a good fan
of women's tennis ,and it's great that they can
get such a choice draw.

Jul 10th, 2002, 03:47 PM
Since Sandrine is not playing, won't that move Iva into the main draw?

Jul 10th, 2002, 03:56 PM
I guess so Linnie! I missed that :o

Actually...on second thoughts, didnt they say Tammy was next in when the commitments were made? She had a higher rank than Iva I think.

What a great field for the Pilot Pen! Those qualifying rounds will be very interesting.

Jul 10th, 2002, 08:27 PM
My new house is ten minutes from this tourney!! WooHoo!!!:bounce: :bounce:

Jul 10th, 2002, 08:29 PM
Wow. Cant wait for this Venus should runaway with the title, but hopefully JUJU and DANIELA will make her work for it as for Lindsay. Thats anybodys guess how well she'll do.

The Qualifying draw is like a tier 3 in itself.

Jul 10th, 2002, 09:48 PM
Its so weird that the week before the USO we get this, and a week before W'don we get a pants turnout at eastbourne.

Jul 10th, 2002, 10:01 PM
That's cause Venus won the last two US Opens while playing the Pilpt Pen :)

Jul 10th, 2002, 11:34 PM
Wow...and I thought last year's qualifying draw was tough! Should be interesting.

Jul 10th, 2002, 11:56 PM
I love this tourny.

I remember Venus last year beat Henin, Capriati and Davenport to win it for the 3rd time:D

Amazing field:hearts:

Will Angelique WIDJAJA compete to Qualifying Round? (Can someone tell me, please!)

As far as i know, her Ranking as of June 24th was #.92 (Currently #.75)
or maybe she at The Next In commitment for Qualifyng!

Jul 11th, 2002, 03:11 AM
Tammy is definitely in with Sandrine out, but I'm confused by Aranxta's "Special Exempt Gold Status?" I guess that means she doesn't take one of the wild cards? Very strange! I'm also rather mad that Aranxta got into the main draw and Iva didn't? So unfair!!! Iva shouldn't even be playing here with this treatment!!!

Jul 11th, 2002, 03:25 AM
:wavey: how long has lindsay been back for

Jul 11th, 2002, 03:32 AM
wow i agree what a good list of players for a small tournament like that and also the week before the us open... but i don't think this is normal. Why all players goes there? There is some questions to ask. Did they gave more money to the players who participate at their tournament? If yes i don't think this is fair for everybody...

Jul 11th, 2002, 04:44 AM
Pilot Pen always tough!!
last year Tammy is no.1 seed in Qaulifyifing draw with ranking around 30..
This year is tougher...no.24 of the world must qualify..
what a field...

maybe here's the toughest tournament of the season...

Jul 11th, 2002, 07:57 AM
I'm Hoping Angelique WIDJAJA can get a Wild Card (WC) for compete at the Qualifying Round!
