What a match tonight between Tatiana and Jelena. Tatiana impressed me a lot this week. She is very calm on the court. She played some fantastic tennis. Great shots on the lines. She's one of my favorites now.

What a great week of tennis! I got to see almost all the players who entered the event : Justine, Jelena, Svetlana, Ana, Nadia, Marion, Elena, Dinara and a lot more. I attended many matchs but also some practice sessions. I took a lot of pictures. Many hundreds of photos. I already uploaded some of my best shots on my personal website and on wtaworld.
Back to the players... Here are a few highlights from this week's tournament.
>> Canadian players
Stéphanie Dubois and Aleksandra Wozniak impressed me this week. Stephanie shocked everyone by defeating Ai Sugiyama in the first round. Ai is a very good player who rarely loses in the 1st round of a big tournament. I attended that match so I can confirm that Stephanie played excellent tennis. She also played very well against Nadia Petrova. Dubois took the first set but the 6th seed finally won the match in 3 long sets. Aleksandra Wozniak defeated the young Anastasia Rodionova, who retired at 0-5 in the 2nd set. And that's probably the most stupid thing I've seen this week. I mean, get up and play the point. It's 1 point. And it's not like Rodionova was dying on the court. She even played in doubles the following day. Anyways, Aleksandra deserved to win this match. She played better tennis from the beginning to the end. I noticed this week that our Canadian players finally understood that you have to play agressively no matter the score. In the past, our players were not very convincing on important points. I hope Stephanie and Aleksandra will keep playing this way.
>> Ana's loss
OK. Zi Yan reached the semifinals of the Rogers Cup. Ok she is playing some good tennis. But don't tell me you believe she would repeat her win against Ana Ivanovic in a Tier 1 event! Ana Ivanovic, my favorite player on the WTA Tour right now, didn't play her best tennis. She played with no energy, no motivation at all. It looked like she didn't want to play. Maybe she "had" to play. With all the withdrawals, I guess the WTA Tour and the Rogers Cup organizers asked her to play. I don't think Ana voluntarily lost this match. But I can tell you that she played at about 10% of her capacity. She said in her press conference it was because of the jetlag. I think it's only a lack of effort. Last week, Ana defeated Jelena Jankovic and Nadia Petrova to win Los Angeles. This week, she loses to Zi Yan !?! And don't tell me she was tired. In Grand Slam events, the winners play for two consecutive weeks against the best players in the world. In Miami and Indian Wells, two back-to-back tournaments, players play over 10 straight days. I don't think a small tournament like Los Angeles can stop the #4 player in the world. Anyways, I was very sad about the result. I hoped for a better week especially that Ana was the defending champion. Ana is still my favorite. I really like her. Her game is great and her smile is... well... wonderful! :-)
>> Yan vs Daniilidou
What a 3rd round match!!! Over 3 hours of deuces, ups and downs. At the end of the match, Eleni Daniilidou was exhausted. She almost needed someone to get her off the court. A very interesting match won by Yan, although this was not a high level of play.
>> Doubles match with Petrova and Kuznetsova and the Bondarenko sisters
That has to be the most interesting doubles match I've seen in a long time. All players were having fun together. Petrova and Kuznetsova were always smiling and laughing. It was really cool. Even Alona and Kateryna had fun during this match.
And here are my special awards :
>> The weirdest player
Marion Bartoli, for her serve motion and her position (way inside the baseline) on the serve returns. But it works pretty well! :-)
>> ACES of the week
Zi Yan (you know why)
Tatiana Golovin (nice wins over Schiavone and Kuznetsova and impressive performance against Jelena Jankovic)
>> FAULTS of the week
Ana Ivanovic (for her 2nd round loss)
Anastasia Rodionova (because she pulled out at 0-5)
And I can't end this report without talking about the tournament. I attended a lot of events. The Rogers Cup is one of my favorites because it's a big event with big names (even after all the withdrawals). It's very well organized tournament. And most of all, it's a tournament where you can get very close to the players. And this year's Rogers Cup is no exception. However, I was shocked by the lack of fans. The stadium is empty. There are only a few hundreds of spectators in the upper stands. And I won't even mention the thousands of empty spots in the 100 level. It looks like the marketing strategy is very bad. Montreal's event is way more popular. Also, Montreal's crowd is much more quiet. People in Toronto are noisy. It's almost like we're at a baseball game instead of a tennis match. And that's very annoying.
That's it for now. If you have questions, please post them here and I'll be glad to answer them.
