'm beginning to doubt the accuracy of this thing
I started to doubt it after I saw Dulko in TOP 5 at Acura :help:

Well, if Ivanovic is not here, then it really is odd...

Well, if Ivanovic is not here, then it really is odd...Exactly. And especially seeing Eleni & Sybille there... sure they're not powderpuff Pin-like, but hey. I don't want to sound biased, but I don't understand how Ana's not there... and Nadia too, she was hitting very hard in the final (I think some serves down the T where faster than any of Ana's).

they just need to get rid of this thing before it embarasses modern technology even more.

who's the next #1 on the power index? shahar peer? :spit:

Some of these positions (i.e. Azarenka and Dementieva) make sense, but it's so odd that Ivanovic, Petrova, and Sharapova failed to make the Top 10

Can someone explain me how this device works please? What determines the final speed?

Aug 13th, 2007, 11:52 PM
The Power Index is the average maximum hitting speed of any player as judged by maximum: a) 1st Serve Speed; b) 2nd Serve Speed; c) Forehand; d) Backhand; e) 1st Serve Return; f) 2nd Serve Return; and g) Smash.
*Only calculates players appearing on center court.

it's been updated folks ;)

much better.

surprised to see peng ahead of sharapova. then again, this isn't exactly reliable.
does anyone know if they count shots that land out?

Im not. I saw some of her matches before. The girl hits hard and flat ... much like Davenport. Only Davenport's stayed in more than not.

Thanks. Too bad it doesn't say anything about average speed. That would be more interesting.

I don't think this is accurate I mean if playing Ana is like Playing a man then she'd be up there(no offense) number 1 to be exact and how can Shedova and Shaunessy hit harder than venus when she got overpowered by Mauresmo at the USO last year?

This thing is not all that accurate because its not for groundies its alot of averages of different shots, IMO its clear that Ivanovic hit the biggest in LA.

This index is full of bs. How is Bammer on that list? I watched her match against Jankovic, and Jankovic completely overpowered her and yet Jankovic isn't even on the list...along with Ivanovic.

Dementieva 9? Cool!.. Cant wait to see milagros! =)!

So much for that bright idea.

The measurements they've chosen are flawed in the outset. Why measure the strongest groundstroke, and not factor in the weaker side? Stupid. It will die a slow death unfortunately.

I know Sania has a weak serve but when she was not in list initially, I just felt something is wrong. Finally updated with much better stats.

Just because the shots are hit hard or fast in this index, doesn't neccessarily mean that the player who is hitting them is gonna win or overpower her opponents.
Shvedova may be hitting the fastest but if those shots aren't winners her opponent can hit them back for winners. Winners aren't all about pace, it's about movement, shot placement. Hitting hard doesn't mean you are the gonna win.

For example when (using ATP) when Roddick set one of his fastest serve records, i believe Agassi hit a service return winner from it!

In baseball a faster pitch will come off the bat at faster speed than slower pitches.. it might be that these numbers reflect some of the power of the players that she played instead of her own power.
