Grand Open for Beijing Exhibition

With the dancing dragon and thumping drums, Bejing Great Wall Cup start out with a bang with all players showing up for the openign day. The day start off with Jane Wong being the announce. She also, to everyone pleasant surprise, umpire the first match between Babara Miele and C Pierce.

B Miele vs C Pierce
The first match is a tight encounter with both players playing reasonably well considering they got only a few days to adapt to the weather and jet lag. Babara make a flying start hitting groundstrokes and attempt ing to blow catherine off the court. Babara jump into a 5-0 lead, but after that, it is clear that Catehrine start finding her groove. Catehrine capitalise on ealry breaks in the second set and take away the set. However, it is babara who dominate the third set and take the match awaya from catherine. On the light side, there is a lot of laughs when Catherine and Babara try jokingly argue with the umpire, naming jane Wong on line calls to test jane ability to control the match which stir a lot of laughs.

S Katsumi v L Messay
few would have given L Messay chance of facing the world no. 1 however, what they are not aware of is that Shizu Katsumi did not arrive until yesterday. Leslie, jump into a big lead (5-0) in both sets only to be fought back by Shizu in both occasion, although a couple of careless error whcih is highly uncharacteristic of the world no. 1 hand the match to the very determine and very happy Leslie-Ann

A Gambill v M Adeva.
By that time, a large crowd are still around and people who watch this match will have to agree it is a very wierd encounter, with both player bagel on the other player on one set each. On the third set, it become a classic as both player playing above their level, and a lot of great net play and serve from both player take them to tiebreak where A Gambill capitalise a misfortune net cord from meghann to seal the match

Night match
M Wongv D Dokitch
The feature night match for the day is between the host Mary Wong and the infamous Daniela Dokitch, many tip the young Daniela will win because of recent slump by Mary Wong, but many are surprised by how well Mary wong play when she did not face a break point in the first set. By the second set, the crowd is cheering on for both players and Daniela pick up her play by some really heavy serve and hitting from the baseline. Daniela broke serve to go to a 5-4 lead and serving for the set, only to have lost 4 concecutive great rally points by Mary Wong and being broken back to love. In teh tiebreak, both player hold serve until Mary Wong win the match seal the match witha running forehand which kiss the line to the crowd delight

Dokic v Hingis
Although this is only a two set encounter but it is the match of the day, the no. 3 seed Elena try to fight for her life with some breath taking winners from all over the court, and finish the match with a clean ace, both player receive standing ovation for both of their courageous play even though it is only an exhibition

Leslie Ann Messay upsets world #1
Leslie Ann Messay pulled off a major upset of world #1 Shizu Katsumi in the Bejing Exhibition. Messay played flawlessy as she took advantage of every mistake Shizu made. "Shizu hasn't been playing her best lately, and had she played her best theres no way I would've won. Shes a great player and although I haven't tlked to her much, shes a great girl. I hope she can find her form in her next match, and I'm sure she will. Shes just in a little slump. I wish her great luck in the future!" The young Messay looks to make a name for herself on the FWTT Juniors tour. So far Leslie Ann has managed to earn a bunch of money for her charity "Make a Wish Foundation". "I think i'm playing so well because I'm motivated to earn money for these poor kids."

result from day 2 + brief report

Adeva bt L Miele 6-0 0-6 7-6(10)

Adeva start out strong but lost concentration together with the fact Lara is playing better in the second set. Third set saw 6 breaks of serve but ultimately Adeva who struggling with her serve for the last 2 sets serve down 2 aces to finish the match.

Messay bt Kournikova-Elia 7-6(10) 6-7(12) 7-6 (5)
Messay only need to win this to qualify for the final, with her victory yesterday over world no.1, however, she face strong resistance form Kournikova-Elia, no break of serve throughout the match, each player has at least 80% first serve in today, with both average at around 75% winning point when first serve in. Messay have chance to finish off in second set in 2 match points but do not convert. Messay first to go through to the semifinal. World no.1 Katsumi have no chance in qualifying at all now.

Paterson bt Hingis 6-4 1-6 6-3
Both players struggling with the windy condition today, however, Paterson look very comfortable despite losing the second set

B Miele bt Dokitch 7-6(6) 5-7 7-5
B Miele in fine form but heavy resistance form Daniela. daniela now out of contention in singles

Pierce bt M Wong 0-6 6-2 6-2
Mary Wong lose an important match, falling to US Open Junior winner Catherine Pierce. Now this group is extremely close with the last two match decide who will go through

Group Beijing match Points winning set
S. Katsumi (1) 1 0 0
A Kournikova Elia 1 0 1
L A Messay 2 4 4

Group Shanghai
L Miele (2) 1 0 1
A Gambill 1 2 2
M Adeva 2 2 3
C Spencer 0 0 0

Well, I need to explain what happen if the poit s are draw, it will be the one with a favorable win on the match they play will go through (e.g. if Player 1 and player 2 both got 4 points, then if Player 1 beat Player 2 in round robin, Player 1 will go through) If there is a three way or four way tie, then the one with most set win go through, then games etc.

Nov 20th, 2001, 04:37 PM

filipina junior scores upset

in one of the biggest shockers of the tournament, filipina number 2 FWTT player Meghann Adeva upset the second seeded lara miele, 6-0 0-6 7-6(10) in the beijing junior cup tournament. the filipina has been on a slump of late and to win over such a top player was certainly a suprise. both players traded breaks in the deciding third and in the tiebreak, each were grasping for the mini break. Ultimately, adeva captured the lone minibreak of the tiebreak with a crosscourt backhand winner and served out the match with two aces.

commens from meghann, "this has really been a suprise for me. it showed how much i wanted to win and i hope this would get my e going. lara miele was amazing out there and especially in the third set that i feel honored to be able to beat such a great player."

Nov 20th, 2001, 06:11 PM
Lets just hope Anne can continue her fine form!

1 question why am i playing 2 matches in one day!

Nov 20th, 2001, 06:57 PM

Messay Continues Run at the Bejing Junior Cup
Leslie Ann Messay is into the finals at the FWTT Juniors Bejing Cup. Messay upset world #1 Shizu Katsumi yeaterday, with Katsumi having an off day, and then today secured her place in the finals with a victoy over Anna Kournikova Elia. After the tough triumph Leslie leaped with joy, as she would advance to the final round, and the world #1 would not. The battle had strong serving from both players, as Leslie had 8 aces, 6 more than her average, and Anna had 16 aces. "I was really struggling with her serve today", said the winner, "Shes a powerful girl and I was tired from yesterday but she played flawlessy as did I." Messay blew two match points up 7-6 6-6(6-5) and (7-6). The match edged on to a third set which again was breakless and went into a tie breaker. This time Leslie Ann held her nerve and pulled out the match. "I'm so greatful to win against two of the most presitgous opponents on the tour. Anna really outplayed me today, but I knew if somehow I could take those tiebreakers I'd get some time off until the next round." Messay continues to earn money for her charity, the "Make a Wish Foundation".

Result Wednesday +brief report

Paterson bt Nadal
6-3 2-6 7-5

Paterson in good form manage to pull off another win again, both player exchange of break serves in teh first two sets, but miraculously, both players manage to hold all their serves in teh last set before Nadal throw in a couple of DF to singlehandedly given the match to Paterson

Adeva/Messay bt Hingis /Pierce
7-6(8) 6-7(5) 6-4

I highly entertaining match with a lot of great net rallies, nothing much different between this two teams apart form the fact that Adeva serve is very effective today and she did not face a single break point throughout the match on her serve. A highly entertaining and Adeva and Messay well deserve the win

Spencer bt Gambill
7-5 7-5
A change of schedule to ensure fairness to all player means that this is the feature night match, Caroline clearly is on her best firing groundstrokes all round the corner, Gambill threw in a series of dropshots to confuse her opponent successfully. However, a couple of crucial error in the closing stage ion each set cost her the match

Kournikova/Katsumi bt Wong /Paterson
2-6 7-6(5) 7-6(14)
Definitely the match of the day, doubles tonight dominate all the entertainment and this one will definitely going to the treasury box. Wong and Paterson is in fine form at the start playing flawless tennis tennis for a set and a half to go to 6-2 4-1 up with serve. however, a couple of lucky shots by Kounikova-elia gave them back a break, from then on, Katsumi and Kournikova-elia confident increase dramatically even though Wong and Pterson did not drop their level before. The final tiebrek is an absolute classic. On the third match point, Wong hit a sure win overhead only to be left stunned when Katsumi save it with a stunning forehand down the line. both teams receive standing ovation when they left court. A definite confidence booster for Katsumi after just one day that she learnt she has no chance of qualifying at all
