filipina tennis player arrives in botswana

http://members.tripod.com/miriamquiambao/pic/mir70.jpg

lindsay anne sarile has arrived in gabrone, botswana to practice for the unity cup. she would play with jane wong in the doubles. the winner of the manila challenger a few weeks back, sarile hopes to enjoy working with underprivileged kids in africa as she came from poverty herself, growing in the slums of manila. she expresses her views with regards to this tournamen

"i think its wonderful there are exhibitions like these to help charity. i know very well how difficult it is for a kid to grow without any visible form of hope. tennis is a great sport for them to learn. it has helped with so much in my life and also my family."

Sarile plans to donate all of her winnings, if any, in this tournament to the charitable institutions directed by the tournament. lindsay anne speaks of ruflina taliamanosoko, the tour organiser and an FWTT player.

"ruflina is a good friend. she is one of the few people who encouraged me when i first came into the FWTT. i was not suprised that she sponsors events like these because she has such a giving nature. she is truly a model player."

lindsay anne sarile also reacts to some cutting remarks made by a fellow FWTT player, madonika diva jafhson, towards sarile in a press conference.

"(gives a wry smile) you know, its quite ridiculous how one player insults another for no sane reason at all. i hope she would find pleasure in anything she does in her life. i have tried to be so open and understanding to everyone on tour but i just dont get her."

sarile and wong is unseeded in this exhibition.

Two up-and-comers learn tough lesson on tour

Paula Masterton and Nicole Lamarc-Safina were fined $1000 today by the FWT Tour because of enrolling in duel tournaments at the same time and withdrawing from neither.

Exhibiton coordinator, Ruflina Taliamanosoko, spoke of this. "Several players were entered in both my tournament and the challenger in Mexico City. I was able to notify most, but I did not catch all of them. Paula had asked me about replacing her with her friend, Linzi Reilly, and I told her we couldn't do that. I should have recommended to her that she withdraw from Mexico City. I am sorry for any problems this may cause."

Tiffani Eggert Enjoys Day 1 at the Unity Cup
Q: Hi Tiffani, tough match out there today.
TE: Ya, Eva [Sorrenta] is one of the best players out there. You know she's tough. I can only beat her on my best days. I am kinda glad that I didn't win, since there are no points at stake.

Q: So aren't you upset about your loss?
TE: Definitely not. You gotta remember this is an exhibition. All the players come here just to have fun and raise money. It's a nice break from the competitive atmosphere.

Q: Earlier in the day you signed autographs with Tami, how was that?
TE: GREAT!! I always love to see the kids. They get so happy by getting an autograph. It's always a lot of fun to sign. And it was one of the last times Tami and I will be able to do it together.

Q: You and Tami are finished as a team?
TE: We still have doubles tomorrow. Hopefully, we will win. After this tournament we are finished. Tami will be officially retired. It's going to be hard without her. She is my traveling partner and best friend.

Q: What will you do without her?
TE: Well, Bryanne Pierce and I will be playing a lot of tournaments together next year so I look forward to getting to know her better. Also I am also going to play at least one tournament with Elise Maurer, a young Belgian girl. So I think it will be ok.

Q: Are you thinking about retiring?
TE: Definitely not at this point. I haven't had the best results, but I love to play. I am going to keep playing as long as I love it.

Q: Are you done for the season after this week?
TE: I plan to play only doubles at the Baden Open, where Bryanne and I will begin our partnership. After that I am going to get married.

Q: That's right. It's been a very long engagement.
TE: Yes over a year.

Q: Maybe married life will help your tennis.
TE: Hope so!

Q: Thank you Tiffani!
TE: Thank you

Sorrenta Moves Into Unity Cup Quarterfinals

Q: Eva, first off congratulations on your win today, how was it out there?

A: It was a lot of fun thanks. It's nice to be able to play against a friend and also have some laughs out there too knowing that it's more in good fun than anything else. It was high quality play from Tiffani out there and I think we both played more freely knowing that there wasn't any ranking points on the line or anything.

Q: Is this your first trip to Botswana?

A: Yes, actually it's my first trip to Africa alltogether, it's just amazing to be here really. It's one thing to see Africa from a t.v. set, but to be here yourself and experience it firsthand is something you just can't prepare for. It's like a whole different world really.

Q: What was your incentive in coming here?

A: Well, there were a few reasons really. Obviously the tennis, I want to play some matches, stay fit during the offseason. I chose to come here because I've always wanted to tarvel to Africa, and I think that this is for a good cause, because I think it's important that as FWTT players we try and set a positive example internationally, and help others who don't get the same benefits we do. We're so lucky and it's definetly easy to take what we have for granted. It's been an eye opening experience for me for sure.

Q: Positive overall?

A: Totally. I think all of us have come here with a positive attitude, we've had the chance to meet people in the region and help promote our sport and try and give something to them. I think it's important to try and make tennis something well known everywhere and this is a great opportunity for all people to just enjoy some good matches, and basically just a lot of fun.

Q: Your next opponent will be either Torres or local favourite Taliamanosoko, any preference?

A: No not really, both are playing well right now, and I am sure it will be a lot of fun against either of them. I've played both plenty of times so we'll see what happens.

Q: Your partner Anjelica de la Courtiere was scheduled to play here but withdrew, what was your reaction?

A: Well, it was just unfortunate circumstances for everyone, Anjie wanted to play in Mexico City, so I was totally understanding of that and wish her the best there. I know she was disappointed to miss out on this experience, but I think the tournament directors were really understanding of the situation, and on the bright side it's given a chance to some new up and comers to gain some experience against the top names on tour.

Q: Doubles will be with Regla Torres, are you looking forward to that?

A: Yeah definetly. We've never played in doubles together before, so I am looking forward to it. We practiced earlier this week, and I'm happy Regla was kind enough to team up here with me.

Jane Wong triumph over little sis

In the end Jane Wong expertise in clay is too much for Mary Wong. A long 40 strokes rally finish the match when Mary who for almost the whole match kept her big sis on her toe until the end, cannot save another drop volley for Jane Wong. After the match both girls hugged each other hard and curtseyed to the supportive crowd who mostly are cheering for the little sis.

Here is a joint interview for Jane and Mary Wong?

Q: I suppose you gals have been playing each other for practise for a long time, but how does it feel to be finally playing against each other in a proper match in front of a big crowd?

M: Well, I am really excited about this match, and I think I give it all today, so I am proud of that, I mean JAne is 4 years older than me, and I am that close already. So I am sure I will dominate her in the rest of our careers (laughter)
J: (laughing) Oh dear me..... sorry I cannot stop laughing (claming down) Well, I think it is nice to play our first pro match against each other in an exhibition coz thee is nothing at stake and there is no worry about ranking points and stuff so it is nice. Mary play really well today, she never play that well in practise (laughter), so I think she is hiding her potential to shock me (laughter). But honestly, I think I play well today, it is not that I deliberately make it three sets. I mean it just tell you how fierce the competition it is even in the junior level.

Q: Mary, are you surprised by how close you beat your sis today, judging by the fact that your big sister has won four clay titles including a grand slam this year?

M: it just tell you that I can win Roland Garros next year as well (laughter) No, I am only joking I mean the junior tournament. (laughter). But I am proud of today. But everyone forgotmy favourite surface is clay as well. I mean the last rally with over 40 strokes I think just tell you that Jane has alot more weapon in closing out matches, that is the different between pro and junior, I am working on it and sure will win next time this happen. I mean the first set is probably the best I have played in my life.

J: yeah you really shocked me, I thought I am playing okay, but I saw those balls went pass me.

Q: Would you say you two gals are different styles?
M: Yeah, I hate volleying, and Jane live with it. That's why I am pairing Daniela as a eprmanent double spartner in junior to learn to do some volleys.
J: Mary groundstrokes is her weapon, is it right?
M: yeah I like my groundstrokes and topspin?

Q: Do you learn to play tennis together?
J: Oh no, I mean when I first pick up the racket at 6. Mary just turn two and by the time I am playing in high junior level. Mary just learn to play tennis so....
M: Yeah, I mean we are in different stage in our career, so....

Q: What are the aims for next year for you two?
M: I will like to finish top 5 in juniors and hopefully get some wildcards in some senior level as well. My dream is to get wild card into roland garros senior level.
J: Maybe we can play in the final
M: You mean in junior tournament (laughter(

Madonika Diva Jahfson loses all prize money

After withdrawing without proper reasons, Madonika Diva Jahfson will lose her prize money earned at the Unity Cup, totaling $67,500. The money will be automatically donated to the Unity Children's Fund of Botswana.

Furthermore, the FWTT has begun a preliminary investigation on the comments made by Madonika regarding Ruflina's drug habit. The consequences will be severe for either player, whether they are telling the truth or not.

MADONIKA DIVA JAHFSON TO SUE UNITY CUP!

Madonika has decided to file a lawsuit against Ruflina T's Unity Cup due to the fact that all the money she raised has been taken away.

1. IT IS AGAINST FWTT RULES! A tour organizer like Ruflina can not take away a player's money due to withdrawing

2. Madonika was planning to help Ruflina and start a fund for her rehabilitation.

We should all pray for Ruflina in this tough time for her.

Jane Wong furious over allegations on Ruflina

Here is a brief interview on the issue.

Q: Jane, as a good friends of her, is she on drugs?
A: (anger) This is the stupidest thing I ever heard in my life. Is she on drugs, how come her baby is still very healthy last time she went to the scan? I mean whoever say that, shouldn't say that without proper knowledge on the whole thing, I mean the whole thing is so implausible, I mean like her husband gonna tell her about this kind of stuff, (getting louder) I mean who does she think she is?

Q: What do you think of the tournament taking away all her money?
A: Good for them, I mean it is really unfair to Ruflina and her baby, I mean I went to see Ruflina just now and she is crying and crying and will not stopped, she said she never did it. I trust her you know.

Q: So what do you think the reasons why Jahson told the press about this accusation?
A:I dunno, for a bit of cheap self promotion I suppose. I am sorry I suppose to be happy here you know, in my friend's exhibition but now it turn into a miserable scandal. I am really upset.

Q: How can you be so sure that Ruflina did not take drugs?
A: Apart from the fact that I know her very well. I can tell you she is a very bright girl and she will not risk her health to have a baby if she is on drugs. But I think I said enough, let's wait for the report,

Taliamanosoko and Jahfson controversy ends with a truce

Madonika Diva Jahfson, tour protege of Ruflina Taliamanosoko accused the #3 player of being a crack addict while being pregnant with her second child. Ruflina refused the allegations and did not make much of them.

Ruflina said:

Madonika is a very funny girl. My exhibition is not doing this well as it was last year. My husband went to Madonika and told her to act spicy on the court so people would get excited. Madonika went one step further and started to say things to bring attention to the event so more people would watch. She was really trying to help the event receive more exposure so more money could be donated to the children's fund. I hope everybody understands this is why this happened and I hope everybody is okay. I was very upset at first, but Jane Wong told me to go talk to Madonika and I am glad I did. I feel much better about the situation now. Madonika has decided not to withdraw and her prize money will be re-instated. I hope that the exhibition finishes off nicely as the players truly deserve some respect.

JAHFSON OUTRANGED!!!!

"What Ruflina has done is simply insane. Her actions in the last 24 hours have proved she is on drugs! I WITHDREW FROM THE TOURNAMENT AND DID NOT PLAY SABINE GRAF! THE SCORE WAS MADE UP! RUFLINA IS A LIAR! Her exhibition is doing bad because she is on drugs and her husband never came to me and told me to "spice things up" by lying! Ruflina, we need to check you into a mental hospital!"

YOUNG ASIANS TAKE CROWN

the young team of Lindsay Anne Sarile and Mary Wong defeated the 3rd seeded team of Selima Valentine/Sabine Graf 6/4, 2/6, 7/5 yesterday to take the unity cup crown. all in all, its was an exciting encounter between the two teams as both displayed amazing tactics. the third seed had a match point at one time but failed to convert as mary wong hit an mazing cross court winner to go back to deuce. the young asians never looked back and eagerly grabbed the title.

lindsay anne comments, "wow, this has been a great week. this is my first time playing in gabrone and i must say that this has been well-organised tournament. it also carries much meaning as it is for the children of africa.

i want to thank ruflina for hosting this event. congratulations ruflina! dont worry about any scandal or whatsis, most of us believes in you. i want to thank my wonderful doubles partner mary wong. she has been great player to play with and i hope she would be able to continue on to the pros someday.

to all, thank you and god bless!"

sarile has donated her entire prizemoney for the intended charity.
