All the leaves are brown...:D
Right now the leaves are green, but they'll be brown when Nadia leads the Russian Fed Cup team into the finals. But first, there are points to compile before the US Open. Nadia has very little to defend until the indoor season.

Nadia the chef

August 1, 2007
CARLSBAD – Having Nadia Petrova as a house guest bears a benefit aside from the Russian woman's presence. Petrova brings along her recipe for poached salmon. For a second year during the Acura Classic, Petrova, an accomplished cook, is spending the week of the tournament with the Cima family of La Costa. Petrova has been cooking.

“A lot,” said Saundra Cima, who supervises the ballboys and ballgirls during the Acura.

According to Saundra, the Cimas have taken Petrova kayaking and swimming and on a trip on their boat. Petrova also visited with the Cimas after the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells.
“She's fabulous,” Cima said. Great recipe for poached salmon, too, which she cooks with vegetables.

No.4 seed Nadia Petrova (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Nadia-Petrova.php), who defeated an injury-returned Elena Bovina, 63 75. Petrova ended a three-match losing streak at this prestigious event, having dropped her opening matches here in 2004 (to Elena Likhovtseva (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Elena-Likhovtseva.php)), 2005 (to Sania Mirza (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Sania-Mirza.php)) and last year (to Anna Chakvetadze (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Anna-Chakvetadze.php)).
"Overall, I was happy with how I was able to focus," Petrova stated. "I was happy with the way I was able to turn it around and not lose my service game when I was serving for the match. There are parts of my game that need improvement but I'm just getting back into playing matches after having some time off."

That was a bad loss because this half was so soft for a Tier I.

I'm tired of the weather excuses, it was 75F during the match. If that was indeed the cause, then I'm afraid Nadia is incredibly out of shape. My blog entry for today was particularly scathing of Petrova. :(

goldenlox
Aug 3rd, 2007, 08:34 PM
The run to the US Open is just starting, and I wanted Nadia to be in the final, but I remember Lena beating her in Miami 2004. Patty has played good tennis at times too.
Now there's more tournaments before NY and more after.
I don't overreact to one match, and I didn't see this one. And it's not a slam final.
I saw her play Bammer at Eastbourne and all of Fed Cup, and Nadia played very well.

goldenlox
Aug 3rd, 2007, 09:09 PM
That's a bad stat. Unless Nadia starts beating the top 10, she doesn't deserve to be in the YEC.

Ferosh
Aug 3rd, 2007, 10:32 PM
I don't believe I'm overreacting either. Today's loss has been the standard of Petrova's play nearly all year long. If Nadia has had a bad year, Patty's has been worse. Many of the Petrova matches I have seen this year have been downright pathetic. Weather it be her negative attitude or her bad play, Nadia has rarely shown a positive winning attitude. She may claim that she can beat the very best, but all that doesn't matter if she can't back it up with the results.

goldenlox
Aug 3rd, 2007, 10:42 PM
I got to see this match. Nadia missed an easy dtl forehand with a bp in set one. And missed an unforced forehand crosscourt at bp last game.
If you had never seen them play before, you would think Patty was the power player, and Nadia was a pusher.
Nadia wasn't into this match. No intensity. She didn't treat this like a big match.

I'm suprised of hearing her words that she is in a good form. It's not true. She is in a very middling form all this season( Of course it's quite enough to beat King, Bammer, Dechy and etc but not to competing with TOP10

Look at her body! legs or arms, they aren't fit! They were the same at the begginer of season and still remain. And remember how she was mooving on court in 2005-2006 years. That was a huge advantage of her! She's lost it :(

Now she is not able to keep high speed during the match. And she still has so many problems and questions in her head and spirit that dissapoints most of all(

Nadia had 2 really good draws in California. And she can't get to a semifinal.
She's not having to beat Ana or Anna C or Venus Justine or Maria or Jelena.

The only way Nadia will win this is if Razzano falls apart. Nadia is doing nothing consistently, except hitting ue's.

Hours before the Serbian semifinal was set, Petrova seemed to be in command of the first set, but let a 5-3 lead slip from her grasp as Razzano rallied to win in a tiebreak.
Petrova then regained control to take the second and third sets without much trouble.
Later, she chided herself for not dropping the hammer on Razzano sooner. By losing the first set, she made more work for herself in the midday sun. "I made everything so difficult for myself in the first set by not finishing up," she said. "It was an extra set and some extra time out there, but I am happy to win today."

The most important thing is for Nadia to get to the USO healthy and in top form.
And to kick Sharapova's butt tonight.

I've been rooting for Elena or Ivanovic the entire time to win the title, since I had no faith in Petrova getting to the final.

But uh...Petrova just got a giftcard from God himself. Use it. :help:

Davai Nadia!

Ana is tough but Nadia definatly has shot. Ana also may be tired after that match against Jankovic. If Nadia can just keep her cool I feel she can beat Ivanovic pretty routinely. Good luck Nadia! Take the title!

It's the same as playing Sharapova. Hold serve and move her around.

Jankovic talked about Ivanovic's scream, and how big she is.
Dinara is just as big and as loud.
Just focus on your game. Hold serve, and move her. Don't just hit to her backhand. She played a lot yesterday. Make her move.

After Nadia couldn't get any of 4 bp's, Nadia was broken and is down 12. A little sloppy, and Ana had a lucky mishit.

Nadia at 44 had 2 df's to go down 0-40, and she was broken. Ivanovic serves 54.
That last point was very sloppy. The approach shot has to be in play at break point. You can't play that close to the line.

Nadia is playing okay. She can't get broken 3 times in a set. Ivanovic sets her up with those lobs, then when Nadia hits a high one back, Ivanovic runs around it to hit her forehand.

Terrible forehand error when she should have won the 3rd game. Nadia finally held.
She has to serve well, and make good decisions on short balls, and Nadia will win.

Nadia couldn't afford 3 breaks of serve in set1, then started set 2 with a break.
One game she had 2 df's, the other's were close games.

Nadia played better than I saw her vs Schnyder or Razzano.
Now it's on to Toronto, where she has Schnyder and Henin in her quarter.

Ana was just too good today. Still, Nadia had a lot of opportunities to take command of the first set. Although she is still playing sloppy tennis at times, Nadia is definitely improving.

goldenlox
Aug 13th, 2007, 12:25 AM
I don't think she can ever fix that forehand. All she can do is add more spin and keep it on court.
There are about 10 players who would beat Nadia the way she played today, and she played one of them.
Jankovic and Sharapova would have beaten Nadia today also.

Remember, Nadia had yesterday off, Ivanovic was out there for a long time.
No excuses today.

While she only had 1 really bad service game, she was broken 3 straight times. 44, 55, and 00 set 2.
No way she wins a final with 4 breaks the first 8 times she serves.

goldenlox
Aug 13th, 2007, 12:46 AM
I was also impressed with Jankovic yesterday, who had about 20 bp's she couldn't convert.
Jankovic wore down in the heat, she was up 41 in the 3rd and wilted.
The final could easily have been Sharapova-Jankovic.

Those 3 are more consistent than Nadia, and it's because Nadia's forehand side has too many ue's and her 2nd serves can be weak.

goldenlox
Aug 13th, 2007, 01:16 AM
Jankovic outplayed Ivanovic, and was exhausted. That had me optimistic about the final.
But Nadia was broken early at 11, then at 44 55. Nadia was outplayed.
But it was better than against Schnyder and Razzano, where Nadia wasn't playing like a top 10 player.

Nadia losing to Ivanovic again. :o How disappointing, considering that I think Nadia can be the superior player, but she isn't playing too much like it these days, I guess. Not to sound bitter, but I think I went from liking Ana last year to not being able to stand when she wins (although she is still a nice girl) and, no, not because she's been having Nadia's number lately, but probably due to the constant fanboi worship and the hype, some of which is deserved... I just don't think she is *that* good yet, although Nadia obviously can't even beat the likes of Ana right now... but I'm kind of looking forward to her being massacred by Justine in Toronto. :o

nice pic ...

I suppose we are going to have to be realistic for now and accept Nadia as a top 10 hoverer and no higher. The odd inspirational display here and big win there. Unless she improves her conditioning and consistency she isn't beating the top 10 players or a deserving YEC contender. Lets see how she goes in Toronto and on into New York, before settling into the European Indoor Season (where she seems most comfortable).

Don't see her doing much there... tough draw in T.O. with Patty and Justine, my expectations aren't really high.

Not too bad. ;) You've changed your signature again, I see. :)

No, I didn't see the match... didn't even follow it on live score... went to play tennis instead and expected to come home to a straight-sets loss. ;) Frankly, not watching was less disappointing.

I don't know... I mean, Nadia doesn't have anything as flashy in her game as Ana's forehand, apart from her serve, I suppose, but even that has been inconsistent. In the matches I've seen from Nadia lately, it's a lot of dumb errors. Her movement will always hurt her unfortunately...

is my signature being monitored? :secret:

;)

I see Lena D is out and Nadia is back in top again.

Nadia's game? An acquired taste for sure: over the heads of a lot of the children here. Highly technical, very Russian in all its attractiveness - power, finesse, touch. Nadia's own very brand of sheer brilliance peaks out in truly inspirational moments. No huge weapons: just a lot of thought and craft building and manipulating the points during the exchanges. There I've got it off my chest - bores the pants of most people, thrilling for me to watch when it's all working.

What an accurate description... and you're right to most people here it's boring because she doesn't have a huge weapon / isn't conventionally pretty. I know people have been saying that Nadia's fitness is not a problem anymore but she doesn't look really that fit to me. Just read the post where her movement was described slower than Daniela's. :o

Much as I love Nadia her forehand is not highly technical at all, that is one of the worst forehands on the tour. She can't really do too much with it, although her inside out forehand and down the line forehands are pretty good when she takes the pace off/aims more for placement than going for a winner. But I completely agree otherwise, her game is built around developing points, staying inside the baseline, coming to net when necessary.

I'd say her net play is her best weapon. Nadia at net is one of the most visually pleasing things in tennis, as far as I'm concerned. Both of her groundstrokes down the line are very nice, very effective. Her serve used to be up there but in 2007 it seems like she hasn't been able to do much with it aside from the rare match.

Sometimes I just watch her on clay in 2006 and look in awe. She could do everything then. Then that damned injury.

Nadia showed some signs of life in the indoor season last year, but even then she wasn't...REALLY all there.

I just hope she makes the QF in the USO if she does nothing else in America, she's been in a QF at a slam at least once since what, 2003?

I thought I should share my little open letter to Nadia with the rest of you guys. This was posted on her official website.

Nadia,

I don't know what to say anymore to help you revive your 2007 season. Although you did put in a good effort in the Carson final, you're just not fighting for your wins in the same way as 2006.

Where's has your confidence gone? It's very frustrating as a fan, to sit and watch you play with a very tentative game & attitude.

Think back to Berlin 2006, when you were nearly defeated by Safina, Zheng, and Henin. Despite being down in those matches, you had the belief that you could come back and win regardless of the score. Now, that belief is gone, and it's a shame.

You're also losing your confidence in your shots. In 2006, you're forehand was better than ever before. You did not second guess your shots. Once you committed to your shots, you really went for it.

Is there something that is bothering you? Let us know so that we can help. We want nothing but the best for you, so we feel really bad when we see you struggling against players you used to beat.

Are you in it to win or are you coming along just for the ride? Your destiny is in your hands, Nadia. Make the best out of it while you still can...

Although I may be very critical at times, I will always cheer for you.

Wishing you a very good week in Toronto!

Hugs,
Juan Z.

Actually I think Nadia was fighting hard in final but there was nothing to do with that good Ivanovic. I closed my eyes everytime Ana played forehand and it was too good. Nadia had her chances but hope she has sights on revenge on USO ;)

Nadia reached the final by beating Osterloh Srebotnik and Razzano. And the Razzano match was close for 2 sets. After losing to Patty in 2 in SD.
So she's not in her best form. Her second serve is a weakness, and she has to put more spin on her forehand and make it a steadier shot.

Hey! What are you talking about?)

i think it was the best Nadia's match since Paris! She looked very solid yesterday.
Yes she doesn't have anything as flashy in her game but she has all around play.
Serve, baseline, and of course beautifull volleys.

Nadia still has to work on returning serves and trying to dictate the game. But this match's given me a lot of optimism.

Also she was looking fitter on TV than on photos, and her movement wasn't so bad

The kind of errors Nadia made on key points weren't because of Ivanovic. 2 df's and an approach shot on bp that Nadia hit into the doubles alley.
On bp, you have to take the short ball and hit an approach inside the line, otherwise you get broken.
A lot of bad errors like that on key points.

Nadia is 0-4 vs Anna. Patty said she was surprised the match was so easy.
Lars is good for her. She needs a coach who keeps it simple. Nadia's errors are the kind weekend players make. A coach can help her lessen the amount of them.

Lovesunair - Do you see a lack of belief and confidence in her game from Nadia. The mental issue. It's always been there. Does it seem particularly vulnerable at the moment?

Actually not. It doesn't seem to me particulary vulnerable at the moment.
Why? Cause "It's always been there"

Last year, in spring she got this confidence and belief in herself by winning some good and tough matches. That confidence allowed her to fight till the end of the match, to risk, to be more positive and enjoy herself on court.

Without it she's not so dangerous to the super players(like Henin, williams).
Why she hasn't it - i don't know
