... I was just checking the match statistics for the Venus/Sharapova match. For the ENTIRE match, Venus averaged a 1st serve of 115 mph. First of all, that has to be a record for women's tennis.

If I was Sharapova, my cry would be, "how could you expect me to win having to battle a serve like that."

I pray Venus has two more matches like that in the next couple of days!!!

well its not just that! She had actually a very high 1st serve percentage! 114 mph with 10% 1st serve percent wont be impressive enough btju I think her percent was more than 70  now THAT is impressive!

She also never faced abreak and lost only 12 points on her serve the whole match!

I thought at the 2001 US Open, she had a higher average first serve speed than Andre Agassi.

Yep, the more I think about it ... it's amazing. Her 1st serve percentage was 74% at 115 mph. WOW

Maria said in her post match interview that she didn´t get a look in on Venus´ serve because she was averaging 115 mph. She also said that Venus was just too good.

She also hit a serve that was near her fastest serve record, just two miles under it.

For those that might not know, first serve speed is ONLY COUNTED when it goes in. Faults are not counted.

If faults were counted, Venus top speed would be 130-135MPH.

Another amazing stat is that Sharapova's serve, which is aparrently one of the biggest in the game, fastest speed in that match was 115mph...exactly the same as venus' average...amazing..

Wow, that's incredible really. Her first serve has been on all week, and thank god she had it in the first and third round.

amazing stat, but let's not forget that if it wouldn't have been for 1 more game (twice!), there wouldn't have been a Williams - Sharapova match ;)

Don't neglect the fact that she hit a 126mph ace as well. Average was slower today around 110mph..

Yes, I remember back in 2003 at the AO against Dani, Venus served a fault at 135mph i think. It only missed by like an inch. :bolt:

John McEnroe said he thought it was the best match Venus has ever played. I'm not sure I 100% agree with this but that performance yesterday is certainly right up there :)

The best match Venus ever played was in 2005 vs Lindsay who played the best match she ever played vs Venus.

Wimby 2005... A match that probably will never be topped.

As great as that match was, it did take almost a set and a half for Vee to get her game going. I just think yesterday she was really solid from start to finish which was nice to see :)

agreed! The match with Davenport was special because of the players and the occassion, but Venus did not play high quality throughout.
