Serena said in her press conference that it was a sprain that occured in her third set with Hantuchova. That's the reason why she could not hit a backhand. When the racket make contact with the thumb it is very painful. That's why she was slicing so much.

OMG..do you know how ironic that is? In 2003 Ju played Serena with sprained digits (I think her thumb was included).

Yeah it was pretty obvious something wasn't right with that left hand.

She said that the leg is actually feeling much better, but it's the thumb that is the problem. She still feels a little pain but overall it's better. She did not hit any balls yesterday but the thumb was quite painful in practice today.

It was extremely obvious.

Well I guess it's something that won't take too long to heal hopefully? :D

Does anybody know how long a sprained thumb takes to heal??? I wonder if Serena will be able to play Fed Cup.

That backhand slice was just :o But she was also slicing against Juju a lot in their RG match when her thumb was fine

boy, serena sure is injured a lot. usually you'll see that with someone who is kinda frail, but serena is obviously not that. maybe if she'd get in better shape and played more tournaments then she wouldn't come down with these injuries everytime she gets back out there.

Why didn't she take painkillers for the pain? Or does she believe in that?

I doubt it. She should let the thumb heals first before thinking about playing any tennis at all.

I doubt it. I don't she'll be able to play.

Man that sucks, USA vs Russia was turning out to be great.
