A little bit of a choke from Morigami.

5 3 and suddendly she starts being passive and just getting the ball in court, instead of playing like she was during the whole match.

Good luck dude. Venus serve is a worry and hasn't been consistent since her stomach injury.

She's going to need a little of what serena has to beat Maria this time. She's going to have to get mean like I kind of think she was when it came to Hingis.

Great fight Venus. Wow, that was tense. That's 2 narrow escapes in the first 3 rounds. But we all know this doesnt mean much going into her next match with Sharapova. Turn up the heat Vee! I wanna see a repeat of 05. :) Anyway, whoever comes out of that is who I want to come out of the bottom half.

That was quite a nail biting match for me. I'm so glad that the umpire did not call the match...even though it looked like it was raining pretty hard. I think this is gonna help Venus in the end.
Venus came back twice, playing her best but mostly HER serve was big during those points against.
Interesting pressure end, the only court with match play. im proud of u Vee, even tho i didnt like that nightmare at all.

mdterp01
Jul 2nd, 2007, 01:30 PM
With Venus, she's so inconsistent that you can't take this match and say she'll get creamed by Sharapova. Sharapova doesn't have the angles Morigami does. So, unlike other players who are a bit easier to predict, with Venus, particularly on grass...all bets are off. This is a win and the chalkboard is ERASED!! Next match is a new match and she will be on a bigger court. I'm beginning to think there is something to her awful play on court 2.

Jul 2nd, 2007, 01:30 PM
I'm sorry, I know I should be pissed at Venus for ALL the doubles in the second set (but none in the third, right?), and I can't help but be SO happy for her right now. She showed tremendous fight towards the end and she raised her game when she really needed to, especially in that last game with the rain coming down heavy!

And the intensity she showed towards the end...that's what you need Venus!!!!!

I'm glad Venus won...but im not happy the way she played...she cant go into the next match playing Sharapova like that...Venus and Sharapova isnt playing the tennis they played in 2005, but Sharapova makes less errors...Venus GOT (not has GOT!) to come with a focused head when they play.

People, she won the last 4 games! Of course it wasn't her best through and through, but, just as she did in her hay-day, she put it together when she had to. *That* is an omen for the rest of the tournament. These girls never play well consistently throughout every match of a slam, but when they are dangerous is when they can pull these kinds of matches out.

Sharapova will probably never beat Venus at Wimbledon, and it definetly won't happen this year.

This W's got the feeling of an all-Williams final...4 years in the making...

*Relief* Why is Akiko not top 20, i just don't understand it with that game. It was not Venus playing badly, she wasn't allowed to play well. Akiko's ground strokes are so compact that she had enough time to get back whatever Venus threw at her, sometimes blocking and other times with real interest. That was TOUGH!!!!

Venus played much better at 3-5, NO errors, controlled aggression. Akiko did get a little tentative, but everyone gets like that when serving for the match, especially without the biggest serve. I would NOT call it a choke.

But Venus hung tough, i saw the look she gave her mom at 3-5 down... and was that OUR Venus screaming COME ON? Haven't seen that in AGES!!!!

:bounce: But Well tried Akiko, i'll support you in future. :D

I don't know how I feel right now - both mad and happy at same time  I guess though I am more so relieved that Vee managed to scrape through this match. I guess the one good thing to come out of thid match and her first round is that Vee must be getting some of that old mental toughness back. She's choked so many 3rd sets this year it is great to see her come from a break down in the 3rd sets here and win through. :)

You mean, "deluded" in the same way that others underestimated Akiko and thought Venus would run away with the match in straight sets?

Well see, you must understand, I don't think anybody expected Venus to freaking hit EIGHT DF's right out of the gate when they resumed play!

With that said, Morigami was very impressive at times, moreso than I thought she would be. Nice angles and a lot of power!

But with that type of form..what is going to happen in the next round??...

Veritas
Jul 2nd, 2007, 01:52 PM
i love how people talke like Morigami was supposed to win this match. The only reason she was even in the match to begin with was Venus let her in. So many errors and so many dfs. Especially DF's on break points.

Venus that was absolute shite out there. I think I saw like 10 points where you actually played well. Venus was so far back in the court. She was serving horribly. But what I did like to see was how much spin (by her standards) she was putting on the ball. She was missing a lot so she took a lot of pace off. Morigami was actually hitting harder for a lot of the end of the match but Vensu was playign muhc more safely. Even though she was playign safe and still missing at least she gave herself better margins to succeed. Venus you should have lost but what a great fight in the end. You overcame your bad play and morigami and won!!:worship:

You've got a lot of nerve saying that the match was close ONLY because of Venus' own UEs. Instead of blowing hot air, why don't you prove it by showing whether there were no UEs and no winners on Akiko's side? That's essentially what "the only reason she was even in the match to begin with was Venus let her in" means.

Anyway, I rest my case. Even after victory, some "fans" don't have the backbone to acknowledge that both players did what they could to win.

If Akiko had won, these people would banter "she won ONLY because of Venus' UEs". And that's the SAME reaction we get after Venus won anyway.

Just goes to show what kind of ethics these people hold.

Venus did not play well BUT on a positive note she played well enough to win another 3-set match and show a lot of heart, passion, and fight. Venus rarely plays as well as she can - I just need her to do enough to win and I will be happy with that.

I am hoping that the rain stops and she has a chance to play doubles on the grass so that she can clean up that serve and work on her volleys - I wanted to see her at the net more against Morigami.

And that's the bottom -line for me. She's now won 2 close 3 setters... Hopefully that's the confidence booster she needed

The last couple of matches, Venus 2cd serve speed has been 81...I'm a little worried about that, but if she uses her slice 2cd serve down the tee then it would be better.

Pathetic for wimbledom organisers, not letting a 3 time winner play on the center court for the whole frigging week:rolleyes:

Venus :help:  I'm just happy that she won. The only positive I can take out from this is that she fought like a lion out there. She will need ALOT of help if she wants to beat Sharapova because in this form, she won't even take it to 3.

Please improve for your match vs. Sharapova now Venus! :rocker2:

guys...
atleast Venus had a plan B you know..

I mean.. during that Match against Sharapova in Miami..
even when she misses, she still went for broke..
untill she made more errors....
but in this match...
lets compare
Set 2 vs Set 3
UEs
22 vs 9
DFs
11 vs 1

thats a good sign i guess...
and atleast she gained one more round than last year...

Well its the truth. Venus should and could have close this out in 2 sets. Anytime the rally got long Vensu won. Morigami hits with two hands and would not normally be able to contain the power Venus would normally throw at her. That added to the fact that Morigami has an average serve at best and she should lose in straights. Venus won the 2nd set 62. had 3 bps to go up 2-0. hit a few errors lost that game. @ 1-1 she hit 3 dfs 1 UE, and morigami hit 1 winner and 1 UE.
Another case in point. at 5-1 in the second. venus hit 4 DF!!!! but still held serve.
And after breakign Morigami at 5-2 to go up 5-3 she hit 2/3 dfs and a few UE again. And its not even jsut about the UE. Venus was not serving well and not hitting well. She was taking pace off and playing higher % tennis then she normally would. So yes Venus let Morigami in this match.

"LET" her in the match means Venus would've DELIBERATELY served poorly and made UEs. Unless she planned to battle it out 7-5 in the third, I doubt that's the case.

Instead of saying Akiko "should lose in straights" ( ), Venus' poor play could also mean she should NOT have won the match. However, Venus won the match and it's credit to her she pulled through despite those UEs.

Although Akiko's serve may not be the best, it was not the worst and she had other qualities in her game which helped win the points. She made only half the DFs that Venus made (7 compared to 14). And when it came to winning points on first serves, Akiko's figure was 60% while Venus' was 65% - ONLY a 5% difference separating the two.

I agree that Venus' poor serving was decisive. She had more DFs and won less on 1st serve percentages. However, just as you can use to "if" game to make a case for what "could've been" for Venus, we could also argue that had Akiko not taken advantage of it, she would've lost in a less tighter scoreline. This is more plausible than saying the points Akiko won was due to Venus' unusual sense of generosity.

As for total winners, instead of Venus blowing Akiko out of the water - which you're trying to make it look like - it was 26 for Venus and 23 for Akiko. Again, these figures indicated the match was closely contested. Although there are limits to having a double-handed forehand and backhand, it produces power and that's why despite being much shorter than Venus, Akiko was able to hold her own in much of the points.

And to address your main point, Venus did have a high number of UEs (42). But Akiko wasn't fantastic in that respect, recording 36 of her own. Since there's only a 6 point difference between the two, you could hardly make a case of the score being close ONLY because Venus "let her in".

I agree that an "in-form" Venus would've had a less tougher time closing out the match. However, you pointed out that Venus was "not hitting well" and "not serving well". If Akiko was the mediocre player you tried to make her look like, she would've lost in straight sets like Sromova did. It's sad that no matter if Venus wins or loses, people like you set out to give her a bad name by deriding her opponents and pissing other fans off in the process.

The amazing thing about this match was Venus comming back from 15-40, while serving in the rain that last game. I was yelling at the TV for her to quit playing when she got back to deuce. I can't imagine her trying to hit a serve with that much rain in your eyes on the toss. I've tried it and I can't do it. I guess she wanted to get it over with, more than she hated trying to serve in the rain.

I don't know what Morigami has done before, or what her rank is. But I agree with others, that she played very well, played a game well suited for grass, and at age 27, is not some scared rookie. Contrary to many fans belief, the difference in talent between the top 10 and players ranked in the 80's is not nearly what it used to be in the women's game. Its different these days.

 My palms were sweaty at the end of the match! I couldn't
even watch the last few games seated!

Oh Venus!
I was so worried she would lose when her forehand
was spraying errors mid 3rd set, then when broken for 3-5*,
she had a look of defiance on her face and I started to hope!

It was like she pressed a magic button and hardly made an error
from 3-5 down, blasting down monster serves and running Akiko
side to side!

I wanted Venus to stop playing when she seemed to be distracted
by the rain serving for the match at 6-5! To pull it out from
15-40 down with superb serving and aggression was:worship: .
This will stand her in good stead in coming matches. She won't
go down easily!

Morigami is such a solid player, and with a better serve, might
have won. She has an amazingly calm temperament.

Now the battle of two former champions! Its a pity that Maria's
run now comes to an end in the 4th round!;)

Venus was playing awful but Im so proud of her for pulling this one out.
One very positive difference I saw from Venus at the end of the match is that she was screaming Cm on a lot clenching her fist and she had this fierce look in her eyes. She finally shook her pokerface of.

I so hope she will play better tomorrow because she will have to if she is going to advance to the quarterfinals.

In other sports, you root against a TEAM... not an individual. You are rooting against a jersey. A comparison cannot be made.

I think it's fine to root for the underdog, or root against someone so your fave won't have to face them, or b/c the outcome will have some effect on your fave, but to root against someone solely because you don't like that individual?? IMO, that's not right, esp since Venus has done nothing wrong.

Either you didn't read my post, or you didn't get the point.

What Akiko achieved in prior to this match should not be the main focus. What happened in THIS match is.

When some "fans" decide to deride her by saying that Venus' errors and poor serve were the ONLY factors, they're dismissing things that came from Akiko's racquet as well. THAT was the point.

And if you think Akiko is "mediocre", fine, if it's your opinion only. I happen to disagree.

It's not like she's been in this situation fifteen times either; she's never reached the Round of 16 at any Grand Slam. She was really nervous. Next time she's in a similar situation, she'll be more at ease, perhaps.
