Lindsay Davenport, the former No. 1-ranked women's tennis player in the world, will play for the Capitals against the Newport Beach Breakers in a World TeamTennis match at 7:30 p.m. July 21 at the Galleria at Roseville, the league announced Wednesday.
Davenport, 31, gave birth to her first child, son Jagger Jonathan Leach, on June 10 in Newport Beach. She is married to Jon Leach, an investment banker and former USC player.
During her career, Davenport won three Grand Slam singles titles -- the U.S. Open in 1998, Wimbledon in 1999 and the Australian Open in 2000 -- and the singles gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She left the women's circuit last September and has said she will not return.
A former member of the Capitals, Davenport replaces Nicole Vaidisova on July 21. The 18-year-old Vaidisova, ranked 10th in the world after reaching a career-high No. 7 last month, chose not to return to the team because of a heavy schedule.

Could Lindsay being feeling the waters for a comeback?

I'm excited!
Perhaps she is testing the waters for a comeback. But dang that was fast, it'll be only about 5 weeks between the birth of Jagger to when this WTT match is scheduled!

That's fast. Which makes me think she really is considering a WTA comeback.

The timing is also uncanny - summer hardcourt season. There's a reason for the timing.

She had to play! BJK was probably calling every hour until she agreed.

But Mary Joe Fernandez just shocked me by saying a real Lindsay comeback IS POSSIBLE.

I don't think so. She's playing this because it's so near her home, and it's one day and out. Even Graf played a WTT event a couple years ago; it's nothing.

BUT! -- the great news is that MJF just said that Lindsay MIGHT come back -- but no, not this summer. She gave us a little hope for next year, though -- who knows?

Yes, Graf played WTT - 4+ years after she quit. The fact that Lindsay is doing this six weeks after giving birth says alot, IMO.

And it's not like this is so close to her home... she's going to have to fly up there.

Back when Lindsay was on tour, you could never go by what she said about her future. The fact that she's obviously talking to Mary Jo about it is encouraging, though.

She will breastfeed on the changeovers. ;)

It's important to remember that the event itself is only one day. But Mary Jo did hint that Lindsay might come back, so we should definitely watch out for something in the summer or in the near future. Anyway, did Mary Jo say anything else about Lindsay or her baby? :)

I am also curious as to why Lindsay will play for the Capitals, even though she replaced Vaidisova who's supposed to play. Logically, she should play for Newport Beach which will be her opponent!

This coupled with what she said to the New Haven tournament director (I'll see you next year), is making me really excited! :D I can't wait for the results/pics already, and it's only WTT  Didn't we say BJK would be on the phone right after she gave birth

A comeback is possible, she's only 31, Pierce is 33 in January and is planning on playing next year...

I know, as soon as I heard about this WTT stuff I though of the email to the New Haven tournament director. I'm excited by the fact alone that she even attempting to play something so soon. I want to see pictures, to see what her fitness looks like, and to see/read if she's "still go it".

Is a comeback really possible though? Sure Lindsay is still relatively young but could she still be capable of playing top 20, top 10 tennis and win titles?

I also thought back to the NH email.

Capriati is also older than Lindsay, and is apparently still trying to comeback.

Wow, this is pretty soon after her pregnancy!

I think that, if Lindsay came back, she certainly could play top 20 tennis again. Her game is not very physical, and it's not as if her ball-striking capabilities are going to disappear in a year.

she never could move before and was good....so whats new - she will still be able to pound the ball!

I don't think these exhibitions should be an indicator of how well she will transition into the pro tour. We should really look into what she's up to this summer!

I agree that it won't be hard for Lindsay to get back in full stride. This break is only a bit longer than her break in 2002. When she came back then, the only problem she had was in the mind, but her game was there.

That is odd that Lindsay's not playing for the breakers. Considering she lives a stone's throw away from Newport beach but failing that why didn't she play for the caps in the game in Newport beach it doesn't really make sense to me.

Great news...great she's playing. She usually plays somewhere closer to home but the Capitals are as good a team as any.

Let's hope we Brits can see it online.

I'm going to be trying my best to be able to catch the match on one of these channels but I won't be able to to tape and upload it as I don't have a dvd recorder for my television. :(
I'm sure someone on the board will catch it though, like they did with her commentating on ESPN2 earlier this season. :)

I must be bit slow. If someone has the Indian wells final with Lindsay commentating on it could they please reupload it to megaupload I would be very great full as I missed it the first time.

It's on youtube. I actually just stumbled upon it in the last week.

Here's the link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vZOymLZaCHE

It's only the first minute of her commentating about the match though. And it looks like the person who uploaded it used a camcorder and taped the TV as it aired, so the quality isn't that great, but the sound is there and it's definitely Lindsay. ;)
