2. Nicole Vaidišová preview
---------------------------

Having dropped from #7 to #14 in the space of three weeks after failing to defend her Strasbourg title and French Open semi-final, Nicole is back up to #10 (too late to affect the Wimbledon-seedings), courtesy of the following run at Eastbourne:
1r + Samantha Stosur, 3-6 6-4 6-4
2r + Elena Baltacha [Q], 6-3 6-2
qf - JUSTINE HENIN [1], 2-6 2-6

I saw the match against Henin on BBC Two, and it was a perfect illustration of why grass is Nicole's worst surface, and how Henin magnifies her opponents' weaknesses. Henin jerked Nicole all over the court with awkward spins and placements, making Nicole look very ungainly, and forcing her - like all Henin's recent opponents - to have a bad day at the office.

Nicole's serve and forehand are mighty weapons on grass, but her footwork still leaves much to be desired. She doesn't adjust to the slight variations of the bounces on grass, doesn't make all those tiny steps that Maria Sharapova makes, and while she likes to run around her backhand and hit 70% forehands on clay, she's not going to get away with that on grass, where the ball bounces much faster and lower.

2.1 First round
---------------

Nicole has never played Karin Knapp (currently ranked #65) before, and Knapp is someone I had only heard of from the ITF Women's Circuit before this year.

But Knapp broke through with a run to the semi-finals at Budapest in April, and also stunned world #48 Victoria Azarenka 6-1 6-1 and #24 Alyona Bondarenko 6-4 2-6 6-3 to reach the third round of the French Open.

And she can play a bit on grass, too: she won two matches to qualify for 's-Hertogenbosch before losing 3-6 7-6 6-2 to Flavia Pennetta in the first round.

I can only imagine that Nicole's serve and forehand will carry greater weight than any abilities Knapp may have to jerk her around on grass.

2.2 Second round
----------------

Nicole Pratt is ranked #40 to Casey Dell'Acqua's #111, which would suggest an all-Nicole second round. Pratt may be 34, and her wins may be few and far between this year, but grass is the most forgiving surface there is, I've 'seen' from her commentating that she's very knowledgeable, and she did win five matches to qualify and reach the third round of Wimbledon 2006.

Dell'Acqua has had some impressive results on the ITF Women's Circuit this year, winning ITF Melbourne, Perth and Kalgoorlie in February/March. Subsequent results aren't as impressive, though she did reach the semi-finals of ITF Surbiton - a popular grasscourt warm-up the week before Birmingham, where she beat Yan,Zi but lost to Eleni Daniilidou.

Our Nicole has never played either of them before (she gave Pratt a walkover at Montréal 2006). Their form doesn't suggest that either of them should trouble our Nicole much, but if it will be Pratt as I suspect, then I would worry that she might find a way to jerk around Vaidišová!

2.3 Third round
---------------

The seedings project a meeting with Tathiana Garbin, whom Nicole thrashed 6-3 6-1 in 4r French Open 2007 - their only meeting to date.

Garbin is having an impressive 23:12 year: starting with a run to the semi-finals of Gold Coast, she was runner-up at Bogotá (retiring in the final), and reached the quarter-finals of Miami. But she lost her only match on grass 6-2 6-3 to Marion Bartoli in the first round of Eastbourne, and has a dreadful 3:9 record at Wimbledon with six first-round losses in a row! (2000-2005)

So perhaps Yan,Zi can take care of Garbin in the first round. Yan's recent results have been impressive: she reached the second round of Berlin and Rome after qualifying for both tournaments, and also qualified for Birmingham before losing 6-2 6-2 to Casey Dell'Acqua.

And Yan beat Nicole 7-5 6-3 in an exhibition-event at Hong Kong back in January! They've never played each other in a match that counts towards the official head-to-heads.

Jelena Kostanić Tošić could be a menace on grass with her sliced backhands, but she's coming in off three increasingly heavy losses in a row (the last 6-1 6-1 to Camille Pin at Barcelona), so I expect her to lose in the first round to talented 17-year-old Victoria Azarenka.

Azarenka found stunning form at Estoril, where she swept aside Francesca Schiavone, Gisela Dulko and Lucie Šafářová with a combined loss of 11 games to reach the final. She also reached the semi-finals of Prague before retiring, and subsequently losing 6-1 6-1 to Karin Knapp in 1r French Open. In the first round of 's-Hertogenbosch, she extended eventual champion Anna Chakvetadze 5-7 6-2 6-2.

Azarenka beat Nicole 7-6 2-6 6-4 in the first round of Memphis 2006, where Nicole was the defending champion but ended up as the wooden-spoonist of the tournament. But Nicole avenged that loss 6-3 6-3 at Miami 2007.

Of Nicole's four potential third-round opponents, Azarenka is by far the one I would be most worried about.

2.4 Fourth round
----------------

Nicole has a tough match against defending champion Amélie Mauresmo, so this is as far ahead as I'm looking at this stage.

Nicole is 2:2 head-to-head against Mauresmo, having won their last two meetings: 4r French Open 2006 (6-7 6-1 6-2) and qf Moscow 2006 (1-6 7-5 7-6).

But grass is Nicole's worst surface, and the defending champion could certainly jerk her around with awkward spins and forays to the net. While Nicole failed dismally against Henin at Eastbourne, Mauresmo almost beat Henin in the final (served for the match at 5-4 in the third), so we have to assume that Mauresmo's appendicitis-induced slump is behind her now.

I can only hope that the BBC's coverage of Nicole's Wimbledon-campaign isn't like last year, when she lost in the fourth round without ever being televised on Freeview! :-||

------------------------------------
3. Women's Doubles: First-round draw
------------------------------------

* Nicole Vaidišová [EF]/Barbora Záhlavová Strýcová v (VERA DUSHEVINA/TATIANA PEREBIYNIS)[14]

----------------------------
4. Order of play for Tuesday
----------------------------

To be scheduled on a free court later in the day:
* NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] v Karin Knapp

I hope that Jackson, Moyá, Nadal and Đoković get through their matches quickly on Centre Court, then we might get to see Nicole on TV at approximately 17:00 BST! :-)

1. First-round scoreboard-report: Vaidišová v Knapp (Wednesday 27th June)
---------------------------------------------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] d. Karin Knapp, 7-6 (8/6) 6-2

So far this Wimbledon, the commentators have described the courts using adjectives such as "soft", "spongy" and "greasy" (because of the wet weather). That can't be good for Nicole, who prefers hard courts, struggles with her movement on grass, and may find it difficult with her height to get down to the lower balls.

The match was first on Court 11, and started at 12:13 BST.

First set
---------
VAIDI _*@* *___* *T 7(8)
KNAPP *___* *@* *__ 6(6)

Knapp serving 0-0: 40/0. 40/30. Held.
Nicole serving 0-1: 30/0. Held.
Knapp serving 1-1: 15/0. 30/15. 40/40. Broken.
Nicole serving 2-1: 15/0. 40/15. Held.
Knapp serving 1-3: 30/0. 30/15. 40/15. 40/30. Held.
Nicole serving 3-2: 30/0. 30/15. 40/15. Held.
Knapp serving 2-4: 40/0. Held.
Nicole serving 4-3: 0/15. 30/15. 30/30. 30/40 (BP). 40/40. Ad Knapp (BP #2). Broken.

At the start I sensed that Nicole was struggling, then she broke, but this break back puts her squarely back into trouble.

Knapp serving 4-4: 40/0. Held.

A few drops of rain according to Chris Bradnam (commentating on Court 18).

Nicole serving 4-5: 40/0. Held.

Rain getting heavier. Court 18 is getting greasy.

Knapp serving 5-5: 0/30. 15/30. 30/40 (BP). 40/40. Play suspended at 12:49, resumed 13:28 (39m rain-delay). Ad Knapp. Held.
Nicole serving 5-6: 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (Knapp SP #1). 40/40. Ad Nicole. Held.

6-6 tiebreak (all scores Vaidišova/Knapp): 0/0*. *1/0. *2/0. 2/1*. 2/2*. *2/3. *2/4. 3/4*. 4/4*. *4/5. *5/5. 5/6* (Knapp SP #2). 6/6*. *7/6 (Nicole SP #1). Nicole won the first set 7-6 (8/6) at 13:45 (1h32m gross, 53m net).

Phew! The scoreboard erroneously gave Knapp two set-points at *4/6!

Second set
----------
VAIDI * *@* *@ 6
KNAPP _*___*__ 2

Nicole serving 0-0: 15/0. 30/15. 40/40. Ad Nicole. Held.
Knapp serving 0-1: 0/30. 30/30. Held.
Nicole serving 1-1: Held to love.
Knapp serving 1-2: 0/30. 15/30. 15/40 (2 BPs). 30/40. Broken.
Nicole serving 3-1: 0/15. 15/15. 40/15. Held.

Suddenly the gap between Nicole and Knapp looks very large, even though it's just one break.

Knapp serving 1-4: 0/40 (3 BPs) to 40/40. Ad Knapp. Held.

Wasted opportunities there. Nicole looks comfortable in the score, but there's still a danger she could hand the momentum over to Knapp, and momentum is far more important and fragile than the score.

Nicole serving 4-2: 30/0. 40/15. Held.
Knapp serving 2-5: 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (MP #1). Nicole won 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 at 14:20 (second set 35m; match 2h07m gross, 1h28m net).

Ivanović through to second round [CEEFAX 490->493]
>>>
French Open finalist Ana Ivanović took her place in round two after a 6-0 7-5 (7/3) win over Hungary's Melinda Czink.

The sixth seed made a strong start and wrapped up the first set in just 18 minutes before Czink woke up and broke back at the start of the second.

After a 40-minute rain-delay, the Serb sixth seed broke back. Czink saved a match-point before losing a tiebreak.

The Czech 14th seed Nicole Vaidišová reached round two with a 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 win over Karin Knapp. The Italian hit seven aces but five double faults.

Vaidišová sails into second round at Wimbledon
>>>
LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) - Czech teenager Nicole Vaidišová, twice a Grand-Slam semi-finalist, moved smoothly into the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday with a workmanlike 7-6 6-2 victory over Italy's Karin Knapp.

Vaidišová's all-court game and powerful serve were enough to wear down the determined Italian, who is ranked 55 places below the world number 10.

The Czech 18-year-old, already the holder of six titles, has been a semi-finalist at the Australian and French Opens and also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.

In a rain-interrupted match, Vaidišová was taken to a tiebreak in the first set after letting slip a 4-2 lead. But she was never threatened in the second set, played in swirling wind on an outside court.

Vaidišová takes to grass despite misgivings
By Paul Majendie
>>>
LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) - Czech teenager Nicole Vaidišová is no great fan of grass, and the hard courts of the US Open are where she prefers to play. She had no complaints at Wimbledon on Wednesday, however, when she finally got on court for her rain-delayed first-round match, which she duly won 7-6 6-2 against Italian Karin Knapp.

"I won - that is the most important thing. The first match is always kind of tricky. The player always comes out with nothing to lose," the world number 10 told Reuters after dismissing an opponent ranked 55 places below her.

Asked how she enjoyed playing on grass, the 18-year-old from Prague had no doubts.

"I am not a fan of it. But I like the challenge, I like something different. It is a question of just getting used to it," she said.

Vaidišová, already the holder of six titles, has been a semi-finalist at the Australian and French Opens, and also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.

Asked which of the big tournaments she preferred, she said "The US Open - that is my favourite Grand Slam."

Vaidišová, who has already amassed more than $1.7 million dollars in prize-money, has been enjoying a golden patch of form in 2007.

She reached back-to-back semi-finals in Sydney and at the Australian Open before reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open in Paris.

In her opening match of Wimbledon 2007, she raced to a 4-2 lead in the first set, but then let the Italian, who was making her Wimbledon début, climb back to contest a tiebreak.

The young Czech, who had to adapt quickly to the swirling wind, boasts a strong serve and a solid all-round game.

"I don't think my serve helped me out as much in the first set. But there were some key shots I had in the tiebreak that won it," she said.

After allowing the Italian briefly to pull level, she was firmly back in control in the second set to coast to what in the end was an easy victory.

1. Second-round scoreboard-report: Vaidišová v Pratt (Thursday 28th June)
----------------------------------------------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] d. Nicole Pratt, 6-3 6-2

The match was first on Court 11, starting at 11:14 BST. I followed live scores, but only on a game-by-game basis as I had a three-way clash including Daniela Hantuchová on TV!

First set
---------
VAIDI *@*@*___* 6
PRATT _____*@*_ 2

Nicole served out the first set to love at 11:42 (28m).

Second set
----------
VAIDI _*@* *@* 6
PRATT *___*___ 2

Nicole served out the match (I think to love) at 12:03 (second set 21m, match 49m).

From the round-up in _Today at Wimbledon_, it looks like Nicole hit a backhand dropshot-winner on match-point.

------------------------------------------------------

* NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] v Victoria Azarenka, 6-4 *3-2

Due to persistent rain that allowed only a two-hour window of play in the middle of the day, this match was switched to first on Court 15, thereby running the risk that Nicole will once again be eliminated from Wimbledon without televisation! :-||

However, the danger of Nicole being eliminated in the third round appears slim, as she built a lead of a set and a break before the rain returned, and a fourth-round match against Amélie Mauresmo (already through) would have a much better chance of televisation than Nicole's fourth-round match against Li,Na last year.

I followed live scores, and the match started at 15:20 BST.

Nicole has won her last two meetings with Mauresmo: 6-7 6-1 6-2 at the French Open 2006, and 1-6 7-5 7-6 at Moscow 2006 (after being 1-6 2-5 down).

But grass gives her the worst chance of beating Mauresmo, because Nicole struggles with her movement on the surface, and unfortunately Mauresmo has just the game to exploit that. I can see her jerking Nicole all over the court with vicious spins, and plenty of forays to the net.

Amélie Mauresmo: "I haven't seen her [Nicole] play for a while or played against her for a while. But definitely on grass she should be very dangerous on the serve."

It will certainly be essential for Nicole's two big weapons - her serve and her forehand - to be firing on all cylinders if she's to have a chance against Mauresmo, who has been in ominous form so far this grass-court season, and seems to have put her not-so-recent appendectomy firmly behind her now.

And if Nicole can keep it close, it could be interesting to see how Mauresmo - a renowned choker - handles the pressure of defending her title.

1. Fourth-round TV-report: Vaidišová v Mauresmo
-----------------------------------------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] d. AMÉLIE MAURESMO [4], 7-6 (8/6) 4-6 6-1

Nicole first upset Mauresmo in the fourth round of the French Open 2006, where Mauresmo always freezes under home-pressure. Nicole also beat Mauresmo at Moscow 2006, and this third victory in a row over Mauresmo - who was the defending champion here - proves conclusively that Nicole has Mauresmo's number, even on Nicole's worst surface.

With this win, Nicole reaches her first Wimbledon quarter-final, while Mauresmo's loss marks her earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2001.

When Nicole lost to Justine Henin at Eastbourne, her movement looked terrible and ungainly. But it was much better here, and while Nicole did characteristically struggle to deal with short balls, she was even getting down well to Mauresmo's low-bouncing sliced backhands.

Nicole's footwork was much better than at Eastbourne: she exaggerated it at the start of the match, and was putting in many of the tiny steps she was accused of lacking at Eastbourne, whilst still using her long-legged strides to cover the greater distances.

Nicole played with plenty of variety: not just big serves and winning drives, but dropshots and coming to the net - and not just to hit drive-volleys, but also punch-volleys and drop-volleys.

Mauresmo's game-plan was to mess Nicole up with sliced backhands - but they didn't hurt Nicole as much as expected - and to dominate at the net, but her execution was poor. Nicole seemed very nervous in the first set, but Mauresmo seemed to freeze as badly as she does at the French Open.

In the first set, Nicole broke first (for *2-1), but it degenerated into break-and-counterbreak, and Mauresmo served for it at 5-3. Mauresmo also had three set-points at 6/3* in the tiebreak, only for Nicole to win five points in a row to take the set 7-6 (8/6).

The second set was decided by a single break (Mauresmo for *3-2), as Mauresmo levelled the match after the third rain-delay.

But the third set was all Nicole, as Mauresmo's brain went into "deep freeze", and Nicole stormed through with breaks for *2-0 and *5-1, and reduced Mauresmo to hitting a ball deliberately out of the stadium as she served out the match to 15, winning the final set 6-1.

I'll post my full TV-report at a later date.

5. Women's Doubles: Second-round TV-report:
Vaidišová/Záhlavová Strýcová v Bartoli/Tu (Wednesday 4th July)
------------------------------------------------------------------

- Nicole Vaidišová [EF]/Barbora Záhlavová Strýcová lt. Marion Bartoli [S]/Meilen Tu, 5-7 6-7 (6/8)

I do hope Nicole won't come to regret playing this match between 19:13 and 20:50 BST when she has her singles quarter-final tomorrow!

But the Czechs seemed determined to force a third set, although they didn't succeed. They could actually have won both sets, because they had Marion serving at 4-5 (15/30) in the first, Tu serving at 5-6 (15/30) in the second, and had three set-points at 6/3* in the tiebreak.

It was my first time to see Barbora Záhlavová Strýcová play. She may not look pretty in the photos I've seen, but she does look much better and cuter on TV. She also hit some impressive leaping smashes!

Louise Pleming: "Nicole always plays doubles with a friend. It's all about relaxing and practising her serve."
Jo Durie: "It's nice to be able to talk to someone in your own language - not have to use English."

I'll post my full TV-report at a later date.

2. Quarter-final TV-report: Vaidišová v Ivanovic (Thursday 5th July)
------------------------------------------------

Nice winner, nice loser:
+ ANA IVANOVIC [6,DF] d. NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF], 4-6 6-2 7-5

But I feel so bad for Nicole: she missed three match-points at 5-3* in the third!

This match had everything: as a contest, and in terms of tactical variety, with unbelievably ambitious play from both girls at the most crucial moments. It rivals the third-round match between Jelena Jankovic and Lucie Šafárová as the most exciting of Wimbledon 2007 - I just can't wait for a Fed-Cup tie between Czechia and Serbia!

Ana, playing her first-ever match on Centre Court, made the more nervous start, and was broken to 15 in the first game. The rest of the first set went with serve, although Nicole had to save two break-points in an opening service-game of six deuces. Hence Nicole served out the first set at *5-4, to 15.

Nicole was overpowering Ana in the first set, her off-forehand frequently stretching Ana wide to net a one-handed backhand.

When Nicole broke in the first game of the second set too, she looked set to dominate, but was broken back immediately in a long game with four break-points. That proved to be the turning-point, as Ana started playing extremely well, and broke again for *4-2.

Nicole did not lose the second set - she sacrificed it, as a master chess-player offers up a piece to draw the opponent into a fatal blunder. At 2-4* (0/40), Nicole decided she'd had enough of the second set, and just went for a winner on every shot.

Nicole's sacrifice paid off, as, after a bathroom-break at the end of the second set, she broke for *2-1 in the third, and outplayed Ana for a 5-3* lead.

It seemed inevitable that Nicole would win when she had Ana serving at *3-5 (15/40), and had the initiative early in that rally. But the initiative shifted to Ana, and Nicole hit a defensive forehand long. Ana saved the second match-point (30/40) with a serve + crosscourt forehand winner.

The rally at 5-3* (40/40) was the best I've seen in any match this Wimbledon, and indeed most Wimbledons. Ana came to the net, but so did Nicole; they exchanged several volleys, and Ana hit a backhand volley-winner! It was like watching some ancient theory that no one else would dare to put into practise, let alone two points from the match!

Nicole had a third match-point in that game, and that's the one she really should have taken, as Ana hit a woefully short second serve, only for Nicole to net a forehand return.

I still felt confident that Nicole would serve out the match at *5-4, despite her failure to do so against Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second set of their French Open 2006 semi-final. But although Nicole got the first point on the board, a testing pass at her feet forced her to miss a volley, and she then choked horribly with three wild errors to get broken to 15.

Nicole's cool sliced crosscourt backhand winner at 5-5* (0/30) didn't stop Ana holding to 15. Nicole recovered from *5-6 (0/30) with a pinpoint backhand winner down the line followed by an ace, but she left a ball that was in to give Ana /her/ first match-point at 30/40. Nicole saved that, but a netcord fell back on her side to give Ana her second match-point, and Nicole finished with a double fault.

Nicole and Ana are the two most hyped youngsters since Maria Sharapova, but if this match is anything to go by, we have a very exciting rivalry to look forward to over the next five years.

I'll post my full TV-report at a later date.

Nicole Vaidišová: "You're thinking, 'Wait a minute, this is not a surface.' But then it's like, 'I like it now.' Of course I like it now. It's fun to challenge yourself with the surface once in a while."

Fourth round (Tuesday 3rd July 2007)
------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] d. AMÉLIE MAURESMO [4], 7-6 (8/6) 4-6 6-1

A fine victory for Nicole over the defending champion Mauresmo, whom she has now beaten three times in a row. Nicole had struggled with her movement on grass up to this point in her career, but it just goes to show what she can achieve by exaggerating her footwork.

My full TV-report includes a point-by-point description, and transcripts of both players' BBC-interviews:
http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/vaidi/wimbledon2007.html

It also includes Nicole's first three rounds, which are essentially the same reports as I posted here at the time, plus Statistics and one additional article for each round.

Women's Doubles: Second round (Wednesday 4th July 2007)
-----------------------------

- Nicole Vaidišová [EF]/Barbora Záhlavová Strýcová lt. Marion Bartoli [s]/Meilen Tu, 5-7 6-7 (6/8)

This was played late into the evening of the day before Nicole lost to Ana Ivanović in the singles quarter-finals (full TV-report coming soon).

I always thought Nicole lost that quarter-final to nerves rather than fatigue, but perhaps if she had withdrawn from the doubles before this match, she would have achieved everything Ana has since, rather than falling into the desperate slump she's in now. It's all in the mind, I believe.

Q: You're a pretty emotional player on court - very likely emotional off the court, too. How are you going to put this nightmare behind you?

NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ: Well, obviously I'm very disappointed right now. There is nothing which you can think of it besides that right now. But, you know, you'll sleep over it and try to forget about it. Of course I'm disappointed right now, but I'm not going to go and be all heartbroken about it. It's tennis. It's a sport.

Quarter-final: Nicole Vaidišová v Ana Ivanović (Thursday 5th July 2007)
----------------------------------------------

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [14,EF] lt. ANA IVANOVIĆ [6,DF], 6-4 2-6 5-7

This was the most exciting match of Wimbledon 2007: unbelievably ambitious shotmaking from both players, and the drama of Nicole having three match-points at 5-3* in the third set before Ana fought back to win.

My full TV-report includes a point-by-point description, and a transcript of Ana's BBC-interview (they didn't interview Nicole TTBOMK):
