Jelena was a true prospect a while back and Bolleteri mentioned her in his book "My Aces, My Faults." She then was involved in a car accident and went to college at Fresno State and graduated this year. She is now playing in some 10K's and just won Fort Worth, Texas (USA) today. She is 19-2 this year so far.

Lets go Jelena!

She just won again, another 10K, in Edmond, Oklahoma. :) And now she will enter the rankings. At this rate she'll be climbing fast, which will make it a lot easier to get into higher-level tournaments, which she is clearly ready for right now.

According to Eggy's ranking chart, Jelena will enter the rankings next week at around #675. Not a bad start at all -- if you can only get into 10K's, because you have no rank, it really helps to go ahead and WIN them. :yeah: Well done, Jelena! :hatoff:

auntie janie
Jul 10th, 2007, 11:27 AM
Jelena is in the rankings! With just four events played -- all 10K's -- she's #668. I hope she'll be playing a lot more this summer, get that ranking up so she can enter bigger events. Best of luck to her for the rest of the season. :)

She was so good even when she was very young. A friend of me (male) practiced with her once and he threw in a superb slice deep into the court and I thought "what is she going to do with THAT?!" and she just went on her knees and whacked it down the line like it was nothing for her:lol:

Her father does the courts at my homeclub in leverkusen, she used to play here before she went to America.

she won again this week. her last two matches were really impressive because she beat two players i've actually heard of easily :p
she's committed to the challenger in the bronx next week but is the 33rd alternate for qualifying so she'll need a wc :(

I don't know what to expect, either, but it'll be fun to see her go up against a better level of competition. Good for the Bronx TDs for giving her this chance; she really deserves it. Time to bust out of 10K-world!

Hi Guys! Jelena sounds like a really exciting prospect and thanks for the videos - love that backhand!!! Here's her draw in Albuquerque Too bad she is the #1 seeds draw, but I think she can get through! She's already won her first round match rather handily over the # 5 seed in qualies! Her 2nd round shouldn't be too much trouble either. Looks like she's got a great chance to qualify here.

Well hopefully you are right because Johansson lost today to Krivencheva, and Jelena won again, so she's in the final around!!! Krivencheva is rather notorious for her slicy dicey game and nasty attitude, so hopefully Jelena will come prepared and blow her off the court. Could be tricky though. GL Jelena!!! Keep going!!!

jelena did just that. 1 and 1 and into the md :D
however, she drew the top seed, dubois, in the md. i think she has a shot, but it's a big step to go from winning 10ks and making it through this qualifying to beating the world number 123
good luck jelena!!!!

xcrtbckhnd
Oct 1st, 2007, 02:00 AM
Jelena got through qualies in Ashland, but lost to Kloesel in the 2nd round. Now she's playing this week as well and is the #1 seed in qualies in Troy, AL. She's already won her 1st round match in her usual style 6-1 6-0 over Moriarty. Jamie Hampton is next, then final round b/t Brodsky or Gabueva. Shouldn't be too much of a problem for her to qualify here. Hopefully she gets a good draw and can go far here.

xcrtbckhnd
Oct 1st, 2007, 02:04 AM
Already up to #405 in the rankings. A good week for her in Troy and she should break into the Top 400. It's amazing how quickly she rising up to her previous best ranking of #374 from 10/2002! She should eclipse that by the end of the year if she keeps up this level and continues to play.

auntie janie
Oct 1st, 2007, 12:38 PM
It's especially amazing when you consider that she's only got 8 tournaments to count towards her ranking. So she can play 9 more events with every single point she earns bringing her ranking up. I wonder how much she'll play between now and the end of the year? She has only been playing US events, so that might limit her, for now.

Her record this year has been incredible, but now she's got to raise her level a notch to be able to beat a tougher class of opponent. But I'm pretty confident she can do it, if she just keeps plugging away like this. I hope she'll have a great week in Troy; she's off to a good start. :)

i think she's 24. she was a really good junior, but had injury problems and played NCAA on year (made the finals) and then NAIA for three years (finished #1). i think she just needs more matches against top150 players. she already has some nice wins.

Into the 2nd round in the Troy MD after demolishing Brandi 2&2!!! Very impressive, and she's in the same section with Dubois again, so I definite possibility to get to the semis or further here! This could be the big breakthrough we've been waiting for!!! GL next round Jelena!

croat123
Oct 4th, 2007, 03:58 AM
i hope she can really make a breakthrough. she had no competition in the NAIA division in college and, when she played the NCAAs her freshman year, she made the NCAA final and choked vs. amber liu. after only a couple of months of pro play, she is already posting some good wins.

any chance of her making the AO qualies cut-off?

Yep, I'm hoping she can win again against Steph, and then possibly get some revenge against Kloesel in the semis. I also see she's entered in San Francisco next week as well! She's playing a lot. That event is a 50K also, but the field is tougher. Jelena is #12 in qualifying, so depending on how far she goes here, she may not be able to even make it there to play the qualis.

A lot of tennis may be catching up with Jelena, but it's got to be good for her experience to have all these matches. Already into the 2nd round of qualis in San Fran, well not officially, but she's playing Brie Whitehead, so it's about as close to a confirmed win as you will see. Looks like a fairly straight-forward path to the MD for Jelena. Hopefully she can keep improving and find herself in at least the semis this week!

I agree that playing all these matches is very good for Jelena right now, not just for the experience, but also to keep improving her ranking. At the rate she's climbing the rankings, soon she won't have to play qualies in these 50Ks; she'll get straight into the main draws and will have more energy to battle against those tougher main draw opponents. :boxing: It's amazing when you think that just a few months ago she was unranked and had to play qualies to get into 10Ks!

Drawing Brie in San Francisco was very lucky; Jelena won't need to use any energy at all to win that one; it's the equivalent of taking a nap. ;)

Oct 8th, 2007, 01:28 PM

croat123
Oct 14th, 2007, 02:06 AM
she lost to ashley in 3 sets...great fight from jelena!!
bad news though: it looks like she is out of the event in GA because she isn't in the qualifying draw and she didn't make the semis, which means no SE spot in the md (assuming that she doesn't get an SE spot because her qf match was pushed to the weekend, but i'm not exactly sure how the rules work in that case).

auntie janie
Oct 14th, 2007, 11:23 AM
So close! But still, it shows how much better she's getting, taking a top-100 player to 3 sets. :hatoff: Ashley is the highest-ranked player that Jelena has faced since her return in May.

But I'm not sorry if she won't play in Lawrenceville -- she has just played 4 weeks in a row, hasn't she? And since she has to qualify every time, that's about 20 matches she's played. It can't hurt to take a week to recharge her batteries a little bit.

Hope to see her back soon, though. :)

It's a relief that she doesn't have to go through qualies any more in these events.

I hope she'll keep moving up the rankings so she can start entering the qualifying in some WTA events. It'll be interesting to see if she ventures out of the US this year; I hope she will. But obviously, she's not going over to Australia.

Lost to Corinna DENTONI (ITA) 6-3 0-6 3-6

What's even weirder than the scoreline is that this was the third main-draw match out of only four that Jelena has played this year in which she lost the middle set 0-6. In Tampa, she lost to Cohen 7-5 0-6 2-6 and in Surprise she lost to Dentoni 6-3 0-6 3-6. Given those recent results, it's great that this time Jelena didn't get discouraged and instead was able to pull through in the third set. Hopefully, this means that Jelena has returned, or is returning, to the excellent form she showed last year. Regardless, when the March 3 rankings come out, Jelena will have a new career-high ranking (at least in the 230's, depending on how the rest of the week goes for her). Go, Jelena!

Very impressive result against Ye-Ra Lee! I have to say, though, that I was half expecting it. That's because Jelena has been excellent when given an opportunity for revenge. So far during her comeback, she has played against four players after losing to them earlier:

+ In May '07 she lost to Munch-Soegaard 5-7 4-6. The next time they played, Jelena beat her 6-2 6-0.
+ In June '07 she lost to Muhammed 3-6 6-4 4-6. The next time they played, Jelena beat her 6-3 6-0.
+ In Feb. '08 she lost to Lee 5-7 3-6. Yesterday, Jelena beat her 6-3 6-0.

It's also interesting that each time the second set was a bagel!

The only player Jelena hasn't been able to crack yet is Harkleroad, to whom she has now lost three matches in a row...

Wow, great win for Jelena! Olaru, at #75, is the highest-ranked player she has ever beaten! This should be really good for her confidence, especially after her disastrous start to 2008. Her match tomorrow against Schruff will be tough as Schruff has been playing reasonably well this year; still, it's definitely winnable, as long as Jele plays the way she has been this week.

Regardless of what happens, though, Jele will have a new career-high ranking, probably around 218-220. More importantly, it looks like her excellent form of 2007 is back! She has no points to defend until late May so she should definitely be getting into the top 200 soon. Jele has *never* played in a WTA tournament but now that day is not far off!

PS: With her win today, Jele passed Sprem in ranking points and will become the fourth-ranked Croat next week.

Well, we all know how good she is. We all knew her year would turn around; we just didn't know WHEN. She picked a great week for it to happen; maybe I'll get to see her on the Tennis Channel!

I agree, it won't be so hard to defend those 2007 points. Remember when she had to play FOUR rounds of qualies (for zero points!) just to get into a crummy 10K? I am so glad those days are behind her! But it was her success in those 10Ks that brought her to my attention, so I'm glad she played them. :D She has really done it the hard way, hasn't she, with very, very few WCs ever handed to her -- I only remember one, for Bronx qualies. Meanwhile, hopeless Brie Whitehead was getting WCs into WTA events! :cuckoo:

Absolutely right you are, Croat123. Besides, through mid-September, Jelena only has to defend a measly 28 points. The majority of her points, by far, came after that, especially in October and November. 2008 looks great for Jelena--I can't wait 'til she plays her first WTA event!

Interesting question! I don't think Jelena even entered any of the upcoming US WTA events, but yep, she's on the qualy alt. entry list for Estoril. That would be a great place to start transitioning to WTA events; the qualy field wasn't exactly strong there last year. :tape:

As for her loss to Pin. it's disappointing, but don't forget that Jele had to qualify before even starting her tough main draw matches. She destroyed Yonemura 6-0, 6-1. Next up is #796 Boserup. Keep it going Jelena!

Apparently Jelena beat Boserup as well as she is already placed in the MD. Not the best placement, but not the worst either I guess:

YUAN, Meng [1] vs GLATCH, Alexa
SPEARS, Abigail vs YONEMURA, Akiko
BRENGLE, Madison vs ALVES, Maria-Fernanda
JONES, McCall vs WOZNIAK, Aleksandra [7]

DUBOIS, Stephanie [3] vs FERGUSON, Sophie
PANOVA, Alexandra vs IIJIMA, Kumiko
AFINOGENOVA, Ekaterina vs YELSEY, Anne
PANDZIC, Jelena vs ZHANG, Shuai [6]

LEPCHENKO, Varvara [8] vs LUZHANSKA, Tetiana
SEMA, Yurika vs MAJERIC, Tadeja
DE BEER, Surina vs RADEVA, Nelly
ZAHLAVOVA STRYCOVA, Barbora vs KEOTHAVONG, Anne [4]

NAGY, Kyra [5] vs LEE, Ye-Ra
PODKOLZINA, Alexandra vs HAYNES, Angela
CHAKHNASHVILI, Margalita vs GAJDOSOVA, Jarmila
JIDKOVA, Alina vs CETKOVSKA, Petra [2]

It's a very competitive draw for a $25K, but Jelena probably got the weakest of the seeded players, so she should get through to the quarters if she plays well. Dubois is tough and has beaten Jelena before, but Jelena has also beaten her, so who knows? This could be Jelena's event to win (hopefully!!) !

Yep, she beat Boserup 62 63. :) She should be pretty fresh for the main draw this time, after just 2 easy qualy matches. Maybe this will be her week!

Jelena's first-round opponent, Shuai Zhang, has lost her last five matches. Hopefully Jelena can take advantage of that and extend Zhang's streak to six! If Jelena wins that match, she'll move up to #3 among Croatian women, ahead of Lisjak and just behind Kostanic and Ozegovic. Also, Jelena has a chance to break into the top 200 at this tournament but only if she gets into the semis.

Good luck, Jelena!!!

jelena won easily, 6-2 6-1 :):)
i'm very impressed with how she tured around a slow start to the season so quickly
jelena will still play hammond next week, but she just pulled out of pelham the week after. i'm guess that's because it is the same week as estoril qualies (which i'm assuming she is close to getting in to - jelena is still on the list for a challenger in europe that week just in case she doesn't make the cut)

she is also out of the jackson challenger the week after pelham and her first priority for that week is the 75K challenger in monzon spain

It's great news that Jelena might be playing the Estoril qualies. Her first WTA tournament ever!!!

Btw, she withdrew today from the $75K in Belgium the week of 31 Mar to 06 Apr but is still on the entry list for the $50K in Greece that same week. Perhaps it's because she wouldn't be in the MD in Belgium but will be in Greece.

Great 1st round win for Jelena, but honestly, I didn't expect anything less! She should get through the next round relatively easily as well and then probably face her first real challenge of the tournament against Dubois. Hopefully Jelena can win that match and keep going all the way to the title here!
Thanks for the info about her upcoming events! That's really exciting that she is giving it a go in the WTA events and traveling over to Europe! Good for her! I hope she can continue this form over there, but I have no idea if Jelena plays well on clay or not? I guess we'll find out soon enough!

Thanks for the excellent news! Should Jelena be able to win her next match, she'll be ranked inside the top 200! Even if she doesn't, she'll get there very soon.

Since she'll be going to Europe in a couple of weeks and since she's almost guaranteed to be in the top 200, Jelena will probably enter Roland Garros qualies, no? Wouldn't that be awesome?!?

Does anyone know why Jelena isn't playing Hammond? She's still on the entry list but isn't on the main draw released today. It's a weak draw for a $25k--Jelena would have been seeded. I hope she's not injured...

I think there's a good chance to see her in Estoril qualies. :)
