Sumter $10K, QR1: Jelena PANDZIC CRO d. Chelsea MARATTA USA 61 60 :aparty:

In QR2, she plays Simone KALHORN, a 20 y.o. player who has never been ranked. Kalhorn needed three sets to beat Marie-Frederique BEDARD, an 18 y.o. player who has never been ranked.

C'mon, Jelena, you can do this--qualify!

Jelena PANDZIC (CRO) defeated Marianne BAKER (USA) 6-3 6-1

In MD R1 she plays the #7 seed, Moe KAWATOKO (24 y.o.; #650, career-high #610). This should be a good chance for Jelena to get her first point: Kawatoko has lost all four MD matches she has played this year (two $10Ks, two $25Ks).

Good luck, Jelena!

Jelena is definitely rusty:

Jelena PANDZIC (CRO) defeated Tiffany WELFORD (AUS) 6-3 7-6(5)

At least she won and now has 4 points.

Unfortunately, in the QF she plays the top seed, Yana Koroleva (#449). Koroleva has lost only 3 games in her first two matches. It'll be interesting to see how Jelena does.

Much harder than it would have been for Jelena 2.0 but it's great that she won. At least 3.0 is ahead in one respect: in her first tournament, Jelena 2.0 lost in R2 (to a player ranked in the 1100s ).

She now has 6 points, which would put her around ~1020 in the rankings.

In the SF she plays the winner of Nicola SLATER (#1037) and Piia SUOMALAINEN (#544; #5 seed). Good luck, Jelena!

Jelena's rusty yet winning streak continues:

SF: Jelena PANDZIC (CRO) defeated Piia SUOMALAINEN (FIN) (5) 6-3 4-6 6-2. That's 8 points, and an eventual ranking of at least ~975.

In tomorrow's final, Jelena plays a qualifier, Alexis King. King is unranked but reached a career-high ranking of 343 as recently as July 2008. Good luck, Jelena!

Also, Jelena is on the qualies entry list for next week's $10K in Hilton Head. I imagine this will give her a SE into the main draw...?

Great to see her keeping it up with the wins! It'll be interesting to see how far she can go in these first events, cause running out of steam (or gas:lol:) wasn't one of her problems last time around - she used to make those really long winning streaks on challengers, so I hope she can do that again.

Again, it was close, but it's exciting that Jelena is back to winning at the $25K level. With this, Jelena will re-enter the rankings around #710.

Fuda (#188, career-high #143) will be by far Jelena's highest-ranked opponent since her return. It'll be interesting to see how many games Jelena gets.

Best of luck, Jelena! If you don't win, just chalk it off to rustiness and move on to your next tournament. You'll be back to your old form in no time!

she was really unlucky with draw. first she used her sr and last acp. were 5 ad. WCs. than 3 matches were WCs vs. WCs and she got 1st seed, top 100 player. probably played great match but had bad service day. and if she can get that close to beating top100 player with such serve than we can expect good things in future. too bad for points and used sr, she'll be needing them. :( but congrats for fight.

Jelena plays LLW in R1 of Vancouver 75k, so there's a chance to revenge that tough loss to her from Grapevine 50k earlier this year. Since that one went into three and that Jelena beat her easily 3 years ago, I'm really hopeful here. In case of a win she'd probably play Razzano, but let's take it one step at a time.

Jelena lost to Razzano but kept it close: 64 75. That's not bad at all, considering Razzano is #124 and was top 20 less than a year ago.

I'm very encouraged by Jelena's last three matches. Yes, she lost two of those but they were against Razzano and against Chan, who's #84 (and it was extremely close: 63 67(3) 57).

Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. It would be wonderful if Jelena won at least one match at USO qualies. Winning one match would lift her ranking by some 150 places.

A great chance indeed! Gronert is a 24 y.o. that has never went beyond #195 and is currently at 222. Her best result this year is the final of a 25k back in June, where she got destroyed by Soler-Espinosa 2 & 1. I really hope Jelena doesen't blow this opportunity, cause in my eyes she's the favorite here regardless of rankings.

At *30-40 on Gronert's serve, so Jelena has a BP.

Glad that she won, but I wasn't expecting this one to be so difficult. I guess Jelena is still a bit rusty, but she's catching up. Panova will be a really huge task, and I'm really not expecting anything in that one, if you ask me she's already done enough. Panova is at career-high #134, lately she has reached one QF and one SF on 50k's, reached R2 from qualies of Portoroz, before that reached another SF on a 50k, and all that in the past two months, all on hardcourts.

Wow, some nice news:D and some confusing news:confused: all at once. She's obviously in good form and it's hard to imagine she's having health issues, based on results. So why on Earth would she withdraw... I doubt she'll play some WTA's already, especially because there are none nearby coming up, so she'd have to travel quite far to get into any. And considering her earnings so far (remember her dad's delight with the fact that she got like 30+ thousand dollars at '08 RG), not to mention her earnings this season (like $10k), traveling expenses are probably a big issue. But I guess we'll see... It's great to see her doing this well, even more so cause she's the favorite to win the quarters against a 16 y.o. Gavrilova, ranked in 600's. Not to mention that trashing the top seeds in doubles that way puts her and Nguyen in the role of favorites, eventhough they're just wild-cards.

Don't blow this Jele, good luck:wavey:

Well done Jele! I have to admit that I was expecting singles to go easier, but a win is a win. Besides, that extra energy that she put into a singles match was made up for (so to speak) in doubles. This will get her to ~355, finals would get her somewhere around 345, and a title to about 325. Not bad at all, but it would be great if she could somehow finish the year close to 250, so that she sneaks into AO qualies.

Very nice Jelena! Sure, Siegemund isn't really playing some great tennis lately (her last decent result being a QF on a 25k back in June), but she's still ranked quite nicely so I didn't expect it to be this easy.

It'll probably be quite a bit tougher against Hampton (currently #164, CH 158), but if you look at her results, one notices that her confidence is probably not sky high at the moment, after three consecutive first round losses prior to coming to Redding. But of course, this summer she did beat Date, Mattek and Lepchenko, all in straight sets, so she obviously didn't forget how to play good tennis. Oh, another interesting fact, Jelena leads h2h after beating (than 17 y.o.) Hampton in the qualies of Troy 50k back in '07, it was 6:3, 6:4. But of course, it'll be a completely different match this time and surely not that easy.

Well done girl;) It would've been nicer to finish the week with a title or two, but she's fighting and is healthy, and that's pretty much all that counts. With her talent it's only a matter of time when she comes back to main draws of wta or slam events.

She must be exhausted right now, not just phisically, but also mentally drained after losing two finals so closely, but hope she at least makes a win or two in Albaquerque. It would be a shame if she would now lose to some bagel girl in R1, cause this is a larger event, with much more points at stake. Good thing she relies on wild-cards for doubles at the moment, cause she doesen't need her schedule any more complicated this week.

Good luck!

P. S. I wonder why none of our girls is playing that joke of a 50k in Canada this week - they have players from the 600's as direct acceptances in MD... Jelena could get some nice, cheap points there.

I don't understand how she could've let control of that match slip away, after bageling Rogers in the first set, she lost the 2nd 6:4, only to win the third by the same score. After that three set match and 9 matches last week it's no wonder she didn't have much left for a match against Lucic (although she probably wouldn't have gotten away with more than a set against Mirjana these days even if she was fresh as a daisy). Still, 2 & 3 against Lucic is a respectable result for Jelena at the moment, and these points will push her some 25 (or so) spots up the rankings from the current #393, so it wasn't a bad week for her.

Rock Hill 25k, 1st round: J. Pandzic vs. P. Rampre.

This girl has a nice c-h (162), but is really in a lousy form lately - in fact, she's on a four match losing streak and outside of top300. Apart from scraping a win against Siegemund in the qualies of Dothan 50k this year (3 sets), she doesen't really have any strong individual wins. She did reach semis of Carson 50k, but overall her w/l record this year (including qualies) is 25-21, not much compared to Jelena's 23-10. And incidentally, last year at this same tournament, Rampre lost to another one of our girls - in straight sets to Lucic in R2.

So anything but a win from Jelena here would be a surprise for me. Good luck!

I don't think Konta should be that much bigger of a problem for Jelena, cause eventhough Konta did beat Spears, we have to admit that Spears is currently in a rather poor form (and Konta still needed 3 sets).

Not long ago, Konta played Falconi (also on hard), who's close to Spears in rankings, but in a much better form, and Konta got crashed 3 and 0. Sure, being around 250, she can probably play some good tennis, but I still think Jelena should take care of this.

Well done Jelena;)

Giorgi is not a bad player, but she's not exactly in a good form lately. Prior to this tournament she made just three wins in the past 6 events, and here she hasn't beaten anyone from inside the 400 yet. She did beat Rampre in Troy 2 and 4, but that's pretty much her only noteworthy win on hardcourts this year. All in all, I think Jele 3.0 has a realistic chance of reaching her third final, second on 25k's:)

^ It's disappointing but not terrible. Jelena reached another SF, while Giorgi went on the win the tournament.

Toronto 50k, 1st round:

J. Pandzic vs. T. Hendler

This doesen't seem like a particularly bad draw for Jelena as she is the one with a higher ranking here. Hendler also isn't in some crazy form lately, so I don't think there's too much to worry about. Her most impressive tournament this year has been Osprey 25k (clay) where she's reached SF, by beating Brengle and Irigoyen, but she hasn't done much at all on hard. No h2h between these two so far.

Potential clash in R2 with McHale worries me more, honestly.

Good luck Jele!

Jelena won 7-5 6-2 :)
And McHale lost 63 64 to Dabrowski so Gab's next for Jele. GL

Congratulations, Jelena!

By the way, this week Jelena moved back into the top 300, at exactly #300. With today's win she'll move up to around 285-290.

A great start Jelena!

An 18 y.o. who hasn't made it into top500 yet and loves to play on clay doesen't sound like a threat in R2, but there must be something in her if she managed to take out the 2nd seed (unless McHale had a really bad day at the office). In their previous match (this August, hardcourts of Vancouver 75k), McHale won easily 1 and 4 so who knows what happened here. Certainly I think this gives Jelena a better shot at advancing. This year Dabrowski beat some top200 players, but consistency isn't her strenght, so let's hope for more nice news.

Wonderful:bounce:

Stephens is playing very well lately and will be a tough match-up, but whatever happens, Jelena already made a nice result. This alone will push her to ~280, and a potential semifinal could get her inside 270.

Good luck;)

Phoenix R1: J. Pandzic vs. (2) V. Lepchenko

Seems like a terrible draw, give that Lepchenko is one of the highest seeds and currently on a c-h, but let's not forget that Jelena 2.0 beat this same Lepchenko back in '07, on the hardcourts of San Francisco. Of course, this time Varvara's ranking is a bit better (although it wasn't bad back in '07 either) and Jelena is once again on a comeback trail, so things are a bit different, but we can at least hope. Lepchenko comes here after winning two 50k's in a row, which seems scary, but she might be tired and that could be Jelena's chance.

Lost 2 and 5. Tough luck, but I still give credit to Jelena not only for still not having a large number of events behind her this year (at 12, only four players ranked between 200-300 have played less), but also because she took Lepchenko almost to a tie-break. Only Tatishvili, Hampton and LLW took more games from her in the last 11 matches.

This is probably the end of the season for Jelena, and I think we can say it was a good year. Considering she started playing in late May and that she finished her comeback year at #279, that's quite good. Last time, she finished a comeback year (back in '07) at #262, so just a little bit better. The following year she reached her c-h ranking of 136 and played in the 2nd round of the French Open. Let's hope history repeats itself:)

Looking forward to AO entry list, it should be known in early December (based on Dec. 6th rankings, so in some two weeks).

Jelena doesen't seem to have a shot, but you never know with Melbourne. Of the past 6 tournaments, in 4 of them the cut-off was somewhere between 220 and 230 (a few places up or down), but in '05 it was 251 and in '08 it was...ridiculous - somewhere I found info that even some local girl, Musgrave, ranked 561 at the time made it in without a wild-card, but I also saw that Arina Rodionova got in as an alt., and at the time she was #330. So I'm not really sure about the cut-off that year, but I'm pretty certain that it was below #300.

Maybe Jelena joins Martic, Tomljanovic, Vrljic and hopefully Lisjak in the qualies, so that we have an even more interesting tournament.

Jelena's 2011 campaign will, as it seems, start on the 10th of January in Plantation 25k, where she's currently 3rd on the quali list, so she should make the MD.

That is of course, assuming she doesen't make it to AO QD, and we'll know about that for sure in a few days time when the q-list comes out (I thought it'll come out mid-December, but I was wrong, that's the case with md-list).
