the scoreline makes me worried...is grela any good?

this grela girl seems to be talented. She took Rezai to a tiebreaker for example.

Draw for Wimbledon qualies is out. In the first round Jelena plays Roberta Vinci, the #17 seed. Tough match but Jelena might be able to pull it off. Anyone care to speculate how Jelena will play on grass?

Good luck, Jelena!

Very bad luck for Jelena: I just noticed that she missed being seeded by *one* spot!!! The seedings were done based on the rankings of June 9. At that time, Jelena was ranked 143. The last seed, Camerin (#24), was ranked 142!!! :fiery:

blame it on hantuchova and golovin...neither are going to play, but neither has pulled out :(
really tough draw too. vinci's best surface is grass and jelena has yet to play a pro match on the surface

Well, Jelena showed she's good on hardcourts as well as on clay, so I have no reason to think she'd not be good on grass.

She loves to attack, which is great for grass and she has nothing to lose.

Of course, there are no easy matches on slams, and this is definately going to be a tough one, but you never know. Hope Vinci doesen't play like last year in Wimby when she beat Harkleroad in R1:rolleyes:

Good luck Jelena:bounce:

2:6 4:6 loss to Vinci:sad:

Jelena's the only one of our girls that went out in QR1, and she was a break up in the second set.

We can only guess what went wrong, but I'll give her credit considering it's her first pro grasscourt match. She showed a good fight, but obviously still doesen't have what it takes to win on grass (maybe a smoke of it:haha:).

Anyway, hope the rest of the season will be as good as the first half, and that we'll get to watch her on TV winning some tour level matches.

I'm sad that Jelena lost but it was somewhat expected as this was her first pro match on grass (look how many tournaments it took her to get used to the clay again).

It wouldn't be a bad idea for Jelena to come back to North America and play the ITF hardcourt tournaments here this summer in preparation for the US Open. There are five $50K's and one $100K+H in the US/Mexico/Canada this summer.

I talked to her today on chat a bit. :)
I asked her about her next tournament and she said to me that she is playing World team tennis with Kournkikova and Roddick. She said that it will be really fun.
She still doesn't know what she will play after that tournament.

bad start for jelena in WTT
she lost in singles to scheepers 3-5. broke once, but got broken twice and just didn't get enough first serves in.
she then lost the doubles 4-5 (partnering with woehr) to scheepers/perry. seemed to serve much better there and didn't get broken (but her partner got broken both times she served)
her team lost overall 21-23
she plays again tonight around 7pm EST

WTT is a league, not a tournament. It's a strange sort of tennis with different rules, and yes, the whole WTT "season" all takes place in a very short time period.

Here's Jelena's player page :) :

I hope she won't have to play doubles with Kournikova, whose WTT record has been very, very bad. :p

jele lost to shvedova 2-5
and in dubs to shvedova/navratilova 2-5
:( however, i wouldn't read too much into WTT results. they play on a multi-color surface and the duece point is the deciding point (and i think jele is something like 0-4 or 5 on deciding points). her next match is monday

I'm a big fan of Kveta so I have mixed feelings about Kveta beating Jelena 5-3 in WTT. Although Kveta didn't play singles since FO 2007 I think she's still hot in singles as she beat Hendler and Scheepers easily as well.

It looks like Jelena's back on the circuit next week--she's in the qualies for Montreal!

Her first match will be tricky. It's against a WC, Melanie Gloria, from Canada. Gloria is #689 but it looks like she's on some sort of comeback (from an injury?) as she had a career-high ranking of #287 three years ago, when she was just 18. This year she has only played two tournaments (both 10 K's) but won them both, in both singles and doubles! Her record this year is 10-0 in singles and 8-0 in doubles! Best of luck against her, Jelena!

Whoever wins will play the winner of Adamczak and Kustova for a place in the MD. The qualy draw is quite weak so I hope Jelena takes advantage of this opportunity.

Another 10 points here. It was a bit worrying to wait for that score after all we heard about the other girl, but seems like Jele's match experience prevailed.

Now she has to beat Adamczak to get to MD. Won't be easy, Adamczak is in top200 and was #148 at the beggining of the season. She doesen't have a great w/l record this year (11/10), but she does have wins over Ditty and Vesnina, as well as QF on 50k and two semis on 25k's, all on grass.

I expect a win, but it won't be a walk in the park.

Not an easy, but still winnable draw for Jelena in Monterrey - Ahsha Rolle (Jele never played against her). This girl is 2 years younger, has about the same ranking, but has a nice career high ranking of 82. Good win for Jelena today. She beat Yonemura 46 63 63. She really needed that as she had only won one match after the French Open. She picks up 15 ranking points, which will give her a new career-high ranking of around 135.

Her next match will be interesting. It's agains Kristie Ahn, a 16-year old wildcard. I'm not sure what to make of her. She's ranked in the 700's but demolished Savranska today, 63 62, so she's obviously very talented. Ahn has only played three tournaments in her career, all recently. She won two of them (both $10K's), one as a qualifier. In the third tournament, a $25K, she lost in the first round to Paz, ranked in the 400s, 06 06 (!?!).

Good luck, Jelena. It would be great to pick up another 10 points!

A valuable win this was, and just in the right time; well done:worship:

I believe this wildcard is talented, but it's obvious that she (like anyone her age) has problems with more experienced players, and Jelena is one of them. Being #750 at that age is nice, but our Petra Martic is just a year older and already #195, so this girl isn't really that good. Jele also studied psychology, which surely can't hurt when you're playing a teenage newcomer, so I see her winning this one.

This must be a pretty deflating match for Jelena, winning only four games against a 17-year old wildcard ranked in the 700s. Not good, Jelena.

Ironically, this was a successful tournament for her. She picked up 15 points, which is a lot for her. It's actually her third highest total and will bring her to a new career-high rank after the US Open.

I sure didn't want to be right when I posted that Jele might end up losing to Ahn 26 26, which is pretty close to what happened out there. Pretty disappointing from Jelena -- maybe it's time for her to take some time off to work on her serve and FH so she can move to the next level? I don't think she'll be able to move up much more without making some changes to her game. Let's see how things go this fall, since her ranking will allow her to play in larger events now. The question is, is she ready to handle them?

Jelena is on the entry list for the $75K in Albuquerque two weeks after the US Open. She's fifth on the list so she'll definitely be seeded if she plays (there's even plenty of time for her to move up into one of the top four slots). She'll be defending 10 points so she'll have some pressure to win a couple of matches.

She's also 13th on the MD list for the $50K in Ashland the week after. Hopefully there'll be enough withdrawals that she can grab the last seeded spot. She'll be defending 8 points there.

Not a very easy job in the opening round of Albuquerque 75k for Jelena - Russian veteran Alina Jidkova, currently ranked 234, but was as high as 51! As a seeded player Jelena is the favorite, but I'm not sure this is going to be very easy.

Jele is back in doubles action as well, after almost a month and a half and finals of Monterrey 100k. She teamed up with some Latvian girl Dekmeijere, ranked 572 in singles but 71 in doubles! Unfortunatelly their 1st round opponents are top seeds Kops-Jones/Spears:sad:

No, she's defending 10 points for qualifying and reaching R2. In Ashland she did the same, therefore got 8 points. But she got to quarters (from qualies) in Troy 50k and S. Francisco 50k, and to semis (from qualies) in Pittsburgh 75k before reaching R2 (again from qualies) in La Quinta 50k at the end of the season. Quite a lot of points to defend.

I'd say 3 good tournaments, cause if we don't count this year's FO, tournament in which she earned the greatest amount of points was last year's Pittsburgh 75k - 28 points. This year the most she got for a single tournament was 15, for US Open (again, not counting Paris).

Well, she played just 3 doubles events in the past 6 months (since March), and the other 4 she played since her comeback were held between May and August of last year, so she probably should play some just to improve her doubles ranking a bit - she'll jump at least 50 places after Albuquerque.

The Ashland MD is out. Jelena is seeded #4. In R1 she plays Lepore (#261; career high #254), a dangerous 20 y.o. who's having a break-out year. Her best surface is clay but she's no slouch on hard courts: in April/May she won a $25K on the surface and in July she reached the final of another hardcourt $25K.

If Jelena can get past her, in R2 she'll play the winner of Alexandra Stevenson  vs a qualifier.

Jelena is defending 8 points from last year (3 from quals + 5 from MD) so hopefully she can reach the QFs here (9 points).

Jelena and Liga won the tournament! They beat Ditty/Gullickson 63 36 [10-8]. Impressively, to win the tournament they had to beat the #1 seeds (Kops-Jones/Spears, in the SF), the #2 seeds (Ditty/Gullickson, in the F) and the #3 seeds (Haynes/Rao, in R1).

Interesting that Jelena is lately finding much more success in doubles than in singles. Last month she and Rybarikova won the $100K+H in Monterey (as qualifiers) and last week she and Liga reached the SF at the $75K in Albuquerque. Over these last three tournaments, she'll have moved up in the doubles ranking from 321 to around 230.

And regarding singles, there's a bit of a mix up in the schedule and I don't know how Jele will manage defending her points, cause last year there was S. Looking at Fedak's 2008 is interesting. She had a good first half of the year with some decent results on WTA events, and then something happened that caused her to start losing even in first rounds of challengers (on 5 occasions in the last 6 months). So I see a chance for Jele there, cause her opponent is probably not in a great mental state.

Anyone knows if she'll even play anymore? Maybe she should switch to doubles completely, cause her average point gain per tournament in doubles is close to that of Kostanic (well, not THAT close, but close enough). She could maybe even be a top100 doubles player, if only she would commit to the task. Martic could do the same.

She disappeared in the same way how she appeared on WTA tour. I remember she started playing 10k qualies and basically owned every tournament. I cant believe she gave up, but it looks she is just not a fighter :(

What was her best ranking ? I know she cracked top200 at one point.

I think she's over with her career. She is most probably without motivation. She lost last 8 matchesin a row, she is not in form in wich she was before and she just quited. It's nothing suprising, she said few times that she's just gonna to play on tour to test her self and to earn some money, that she doesn't plan to play long. She tasted herself, earned some money and now she is doing her profession. It was nice while it lasted, but I am 90% sure it's over. Enjoy your life Jele! :wavey:

She said she's not playing because of leg injury. She has that injury from last season. She tried to play injured but it was not going as we can see. She's gonna try to get masters in psychology. She's gonna keep the prodected rank but she doesn't know is she ever gonna use it. She can use it in 2 years and the problem is that some people can't fully recover from this tipe of injury. Her school is gonna last 2 years also, so it's gonna be hard to adjust schelude if she's ever gonna ba back.
She said she' not completly satisfied, but also not unsatisfied with her comeback.
She was happy to take part in all 4 Grand Slams and she says that she wanted more, but she couldn't play 'cause the injury's bodering her. :crying2:
Hopefully she will be back one day, 100% healthy. :wavey:

What a shame! I always thought she quit because she had tried it for a while and was satisfied with what she achieved in that short time, which was really impressive. I'm glad she's leaving the door a little bit open for a return, but it doesn't sound too likely.

Jelena will always be one of the most inspiring players I've ever followed, because she achieved everything all on her own, starting out in 10K qualies, travelling around but only in the USA, steadily climbing the rankings from 0 to top 150 with very, very little help from wild cards (I only remember one WC). She proved that you don't need handouts and you don't need a massive budget that allows you to travel all over the world to succeed on the Tour. Thank you, Jelena! It was a real pleasure following your short WTA career. Best of luck in your new life!

According to Wikipedia...: "A player injured for a minimum of six months can ask for a protected ranking, which will be based on his or her average ranking during the first three months of his or her injury. The player will be able to use his or her protected ranking to enter tournaments' main draws or qualifying competitions, when coming back from injury.".
