Me, too. But it looks like she's decided to play the $100K+H tournament in Saint-Malo, France, that week instead. I wonder why? She'll have to play qualies there, too, so why not go to Estoril after Monzon?

Oh, well. I'd love to go to Saint-Malo myself sometime. :D

She has also entered Berlin that week. :D But she's way down the alt. list, so I think her chances of playing Bucharest are a lot better than her chances of showing up in Berlin. I'm looking forward to your reports, Gigi!

Jelena starts off in Monzon qualies against a Spanish wild card ranked around 600, Maite Gabarrus-Alonso. That should be a good way to ease into the tournament -- at least I hope it will! No losing to wild cards allowed, Jele! :D

croat123
Apr 4th, 2008, 08:42 PM
jelena and coevllo (spl) lost to the top seeds 7-6 6-3 in the quarters in greece. i think that's a really positive scoreline considering her partner isn't even top700 in doubles (and unranked in singles, and got her ass kicked in qualies)
hopefully jelena gets some quality wins in monzon

W-O-W! I didn't expect that score. Really impressive, Jelena! Definitely playing top 100 tennis!!!

Jelena plays another former top 50 player--Bremond--in the second round. Could be tough but it's also doable as Bremond has been out of form for a looong time. She was 12-30 last year and has only won two matches so far this year (2-6).

Could this be Jelena's break-through tournament?!? Regardless, she'll be ranked in the 190's next week and is now sure to make the cut-off for Roland Garros qualies!

croat123
Apr 8th, 2008, 08:26 PM
there is an interview from today's match on salatara.com
jelena is happy with her play. she isn't making lots of errors and is taking advantage of the chances she gets. however, the match today actually lasted almost two hours because there were some very long games on camerin's serve and jelena is pretty tired. she's still optimistic for tomorrow though :)

I'm disappointed because I thought Jelena had a good chance against Bremond, given how well she has been playing. I'm sure having to play three qualifying matches took quite a bit out of her.

Still, some very good results for Jelena this week. She picked up 10 ranking points and will break into the top 200 when the next rankings come out, on Monday.

Hopefully we'll see her play her very first WTA tournament soon! Maybe even her very first Grand Slam event!

Next week will the biggest of Jelena's career so far, for two reasons: (1) she'll be ranked in the top 200 for the very first time; and, (2) she'll be playing in her biggest tournament ever (St-Malo, which is $100k+H), even if it's just qualies so far.

St-Malo has a very weak draw for a tournament its size so hopefully Jelena can qualify and do some damage in the MD! Go, Jelena--I'm rooting for you!!!

Well, in the latest rankings (April 14), Jelena has moved up to a career-high ranking of 198 (from 205 last week). She's now in the top 200, for the first time ever!

Also, even though she hasn't yet had any spectacular tournament results in 2008, she has made a solid move up the rankings since the end of 2007, when she was 255.

Congratulations, Jelena! Your big breakthrough will come any day now!

That's great news. I think a nice goal for Jelena would be Top 100 by USO and into the MD directly. It might be something of a stretch, but a few big results and it's possible. Hopefully a big result in Prague for her would be nice!
Is she playing Fed Cup this week or an ITF event? Also, what is she playing the weeks of May 5-19?

The 100K in France is the same week as Prague, where she's in the qualies. It's better for her to play the WTA event instead of another challenger.

In Bucharest she'll be in the main draw and might even be seeded, so I can see why she'd choose to play there instead of Zagreb.

Jelena is currently at home in Leverkusen, Germany, where her father lives. She played today in the local league and beat a local girl 6-3 6-1. She is allright, has no tapes and even played the doubles with Freye (a girl that was in the AO doubz QF before) and won 6-2 6-0 against unknown girls.
She hits flat like pancake and has a good footwork. She was smiling a lot and chatted with many persons she knew from her youth (she was practicing here before she went to the USA). She told a guy that she is planning to play a tournament in Europe (I didn't get which one) and she wants to play French Open Qualies.
She's such a sweet girl. Speaks german fluently:)

 Thanks for the inside information! It's great to hear what she's doing. :wavey:

Even though Jelena hasn't had good results lately, she did reach a new career-high ranking this week: 191!

There are lots of ranking points at stake in RG qualies so I'll be completely satisfied if Jelena wins just her first-round match. That would give her 15 points, which would push her ranking to around 180.

You're right! She's playing World TeamTennis, on the St. Louis Aces. Here's her WTT page:

http://www.wtt.com/players.aspx?playerid=440

The WTT is not a national league like the German and French ones, though. It's Billie Jean King's league; its season lasts for just a month or so, and most of the rules are different from normal tennis. But Jelena will have a great time; the players seem to love it. :D

Anyone know what Jelena's next WTA/ITF tournament is? Anyone know if she's planning to play Birmingham, Barcelona, Eastbourne or 's-Hertogenbosch?

she's not into the qualies of barcelona nor birmingham. I think she plays in the dutch team league at the weekend. She's in the same team like Kveta (tc groenekan). The league is called EREDIVISIE.

It seems to me like she is not very ambitious..
She should play bigger events.

Didn't she just play a slam?

And regarding her ambition, there was a good article about her in some Croatian media lately, where she talked about hopes, ambitions etc.

In it, she said that after finishing college where she studied psychology she finally realised why her tennis wasn't going anywhere in the past - cause she thought she depends on it, and was therefore putting too much pressure on herself. She also said she's enjoying the game much more now, cause she knows that it will not only help her play better, but also cause after getting her diploma she's aware that she always has an alternative in life.

Sounds like lack of ambition, but it's actually common sense, cause she says her life is now much more than just playing tennis. She's OK with being Croatian #1, but isn't impressed with it cause "we don't exactly have a high first rank" She also said that she'd like to get to top100, but doesen't pressure herself in doing it at any cost.

It's one of the wisest interviews of tennis players I've read in a long time.

I saw her today in my club! She practiced with a male player and she will play for my club tomorrow in the local league. Their opponents are weak but I guess Jelena gets some money for her appearance and maybe she's just enjoying the time with her family here in Leverkusen right now. I hope she plays Wimbledon qualies.

Tell her she has a lot of fans online, and not just Croatians. :)

It looks like Jele won't play again until Wimbledon qualies (and I don't even know that for sure). Does anyone know her schedule?
