Anastasia Myskina

Alright, I know I said in the Sydney thread that I'd give it to Safarova, but 5 aces really would make her almost impossible to beat  Hope Lucie understands  Instead the extra ace goes to Myskina, for making the quarter-finals in her debut event last week :yeah:

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/photos/150x200/310553.jpg

Severine goes in as the favourite after her successful rebound ace season, she really understands the game well, and knows when to attack and when to pull back, she has needed some luck to win some key matches, that would be my only concern with her, Venus, on the other hand, has a very impressive gameplan, it would take something special to beat her if she keeps up her current form, whilst rebound ace-specialist Safarova has used her 4 aces to great effect, and will be a tough prospect for anyone.

The Contenders

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/photos/150x200/40289.jpg

Anabel's ability to vary her game well is her strength, and she has been very consistent so far, but I'm not sure if she has enough killer shots to beat the other top players, Dementieva is one of the most aggressive players on the tour, and no-one will want to face her.

Bartoli prendra le pied...ou bien le gateau

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3116/M3.jpg

Marion Bartoli arrived in Melbourne this morning and hit the practice courts inspired by her first victory on the ATC tour and pushing compatriate Amélie Mauresmo in two tight sets. Bartoli owes her success to her new found attitude on court.

"Aggression is key in this instance, when I feel like I can win it just all comes together and I really love being out there and I'm hoping to have an easy win against Zvonareva and then perhaps even defeat Amélie!"

Facing a possible quarterfinal rendez-vous with Spaniarde Anabel Medina Garrigues.. Bartoli felt confident she could go the distance.

"After beating the self proclaimed greatest player in the world..I rate myself."

Vamos.

Venus is a great player, she won tournament in Sydney, so when I saw the draws I thought: OMG! Why I must play against her, so early?! Anyway I think it help me. It was our first match in this event, so we haven't practice. Organises of AO said that I can be a dark horse, here. He was right. I amde a biggest surprise in 1st round matches. I'm gonna win my next match, my next oponnent is Italy's girl Camerin. I should beat her, I belive I'll do it. Davenport sets up clash with top seed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40761000/jpg/_40761035_davenport.jpg

Melbourne, AUS -- Lindsay Davenport recorded only her second win of the season by beating Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 5-7 6-1 6-3 in the first round of the Australian Open. After dropping the opening set, Davenport looked on course for a fourth consecutive loss, but her serve suddenly began to click. She ended up firing down 11 aces (and many unreturnables) en route to victory.

'I have nothing to lose,' said Lindsay when asked about her next match. 'The pressure is on Severine to perform, because she's had such an amazing start to the season and people want to see if she can continue that form at a Slam. So I'll just go out there and play my normal game, to try and get the first strike in and be in control of the rallies. I'm looking forward to it.'

Flavia Pennetta in third round!!!http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.i1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/empics/4245627

Incredible but true! Italian player Flavia Pennetta defeated seed n.5 Ashley Harkleroad 7-6(6) 1-6 7-5, in the battle of Pin Ups!
The match has been very close, in first set they both hold serve untill tie break, there Flavia show some good shot and wins first set.
The second has been dominated by the american, really on fire on serve and especially with her forehand!
In the third, Italian fighter pushed harder the opponent, winning the match after a thrilling 12th game!

Flavia after this second win in Melbourne, looked satisfied...

" I'm very happy. Ashley in the second set really gave me some problem, but thnx to Carlos and other my fans i was able to win! I hope to do well in double, too with my friend Jelena. This evening i'll surely go to make party with her and MEC, and tonight with Carlos, of course!"

Bremond Still Alive !

http://img44.imagevenue.com/aAfkjfp01fo1i-25405/loc789/62016_Severineee_122_789lo.jpg

Frenchwomand and world number one Séverine Bremond advances trough to semi-final in Melbourne defeating Elena Dementieva (6) 6/3 3/6 7/5 after to have been led 5/3 in final set !

In first set, Séverine Bremond takes quickly opponent's service to lead 5/2. Even if Dementieva seems to react and to be more aggressive, Bremond keeps on playing well and attacking every ball ! She closes the set 6/3. She seems to be in control and nobody did'nt see how Elena Dementieva could be able to return the situation.

Yet, she does ! She needs only 15 minutes to lead 5/0 and completly destroys Bremond's nerves. Yet the crowd has a new surprise : Bremond's rebirth ! She wins 3 games in a row but her late was too important to come back. Russian player ties to 6/3 3/6 !

World number One player starts the third set with a new tactic and a great mental. She makes some great efforts and tries to do play her opponent ! Dementieva lets her to win some games before to level up her game and to have 2 match points ! And as a champion, Bremond comes back and doesn't give to Dementieva any opportunity. She won this third set 7/5 !

Nathalie finally records a comfortable victory and moves onto the final, Anabel  whilst very consistent, you may want to take a few more risks if you really want to win big ;)

From 1-3 down, Alicia wins 11 games in a row to reach the final in her home Slam, not even the great Severine could withstand Molik in this form, question is, can she make it one more round?

Chakvetadze/Harkleroad Through To Doubles Final
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k89/xXxPosterGirlxXx/AnnaChakvetadze15.jpg

Anna Chakvetadze and Ashley Harkleroad are through to the doubles final at the Aussie Open after a 6-1 5-7 6-3 over Rezai/Dechy. The world number two's are looking to capture their second doubles title of the season after winning the Gold Coast in only their first tournament together. After losing in the first round of doubles last week Chakvetadze is glad to get to the final this week. "It was so disappointing to lose first round last week after our title the week before. We felt we played very well last week even better than the week before, but it didn't show. We've had a great run this week, and hopefully we can win tomorrow!"
Chakvetadze lost in the first round of the singles tournament and wants to make up for it "I was very disappointed losing in the first round. I knew I wasn't playing my best and it frustrated me during the whole match."

What a final for the first Grand Slam on the ATC :worship: Congrats to Nathalie for winning the title and becoming the tour's new #1 :yeah: She was the only player this week who was able to wear out the Aussie who played brilliantly all week, a shame someone had to lose, Alicia will definitely win some titles if she keeps up this form :)

Thanks to all who played this week! :D Onto clay we go!

Dechy Walks Off The Winner!!

http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/dechy/gallery/082.jpg

France's 7th seed Nathalie Dechy has always talked a big game and always said she would rise to the occasion and today at the first slam of the year she proved it with a three sets win over home favourite Alicia Molik 7-6(2) 1-6 7-5. Despite being the seeded player, Dechy wasnt the favourite going into the match as Molik had destroyed her half of the draw including a huge win over the then world number 1 Severine Bremond in straight sets while Dechy struggled in all her matches apart from her win in the semis over 3rd seed Medina Garrigues. As the players headed to the court they were both asked how they were feeling and Nathalie replied 'I feel fine, I want this title because I am the best', while Alicia said 'I am so excitied to be playing in front of my home crowd and I want to do them proud.'

During the warm up the crowd made there feelings known that they were firmly behind the Aussie cheering every shot she hit and failed to cheer Dechy as she was announced to them. You could see that for the first time in her career that the French superstar was nervous and dropped her serve to love and continued to struggle going down 4-2 after some powerful strikes on the forehand from the home girl which had proved to be a winning weapon in her previous matches. But all started to change in favour of the seventh seed in this game when Molik hit a sliced backhand called out at 30-30 which replays showed was in fact in, the Aussie challenges the call but thankfully for the French player the system failed and the call stand, despite vocal protests from Molik and the crowd, umpire Lynn Welsh had no option, even the tour director couldn’t influence her decision who has always hated Dechy. Molik goes on to hit a double fault and Dechy breaks back and the match goes on serve until the tiebreak where for the first time all tournament, Molik looked vulnerable and nervous. She had some basic errors and Dechy bounced on it and ran into the net on all of the Aussie safe mid court balls saying ‘pass me if you can’ and the Aussie didn’t and the first set was over.

At the end of the set, a demoralised Molik requests a bathroom, while Dechy stays out on court to think she is a set away from being the number 1 player on the tour and first slam champion and allowed the occasion and the crowd to affect her and played a poor set of tennis missing the court by a country mile as she tightened up and failed to construct a rally that saw her get back into the first set and the Aussie to the complete delight of the noise Bruce’s and Sheila’s levelled the match. Dechy smashes her racket on court and receives a warning that angers her more and she takes her own toilet break to calm down and compose herself.

In the third, it was Dechy who started the better and hit a beautiful forehand drive volley to go up an early break at 2-0 and with continued attacking play to come in and hit the drive volleys off both sides she raced into a 5-2 lead with some lucky net cords which obviously angered both Alicia and her fans. They never gave up on Alicia and she didn’t give up on the title and she came back with some strong tennis of her own to level the match at 5-5 after saving 4 match points. As the match levelled, the tension became unbearable on court as both players wanted it so badly and started off the 11th game with two errors each to make it 30-30. Dechy trying to keep calm in her biggest match of her career, tried to remain calm and hit the first serve down the tee, just missing, the crowd realise Molik has a big chance here and cheer her on the loudest they have all day, as she steps two foot inside the baseline to return the second serve, Dechy looking nervous hit the net and luckily for her it lands in and a let is called, she takes her time focuses and hit a sliced seve that curves away from the big Aussie and hit her first ace of the match and pumps her fist and wins the next point to secure the 6-5 lead. As both players sat at the change of ends with towels on their heads to concentrate. As Molik tries to serve for the first point the crowd keeps screaming ‘ALICIA, ALICIA’ for a good 30 seconds which for the first time all tournament seemed to put pressure on the Australian, on the first point, she puts a cross court forehand wide, then at 0-15 Dechy hits a backhand down the line after a punishing rally which Molik hits a forced error. Two points away from winning, Molik hits an ace and follows it up with a serve and volley to level the game 30-30. Both take their time to focus and Dechy returns a weak second serve down the centre of the court and both keep hitting ¾ paced balls down the middle of the court afraid to go for anything and after 26 shots, Dechy takes the initiative and moves forward after an interout forehand to Molik weaker side, the backhand and hits a drop volley to get her 5th match point. As each match point has come, Dechy has looked more and more nervous but this time was her time and hits a drop shot of the serve and completely fools the Aussie and jumps up and screams to celebrate the win.

The champion said ‘For the first time in my life, im speechless! I knew going into the match that if I kept the scoreline close, I would have a great chance because she hadnt been tested all tournament and I am mentally very strong. I am so happy at the moment – I want to thank my coach because he is amazing like I am. He believed in my when everyone else didn’t. I told everyone on tour I was the best and they laughed but they are laughing on the other side of their face now. I am the bets player on the tour – FACT. All the other girls are so jealous of me but that’s life, Im use to it. Molik has talent but needs to train a bit hard or quit the burgers for the end of the set to really challenge the likes of me. Now on to the clay which is my favourite surface, so it can only get better’
