Anna was seeded 31 last year. So what's everyone's expectations for Anna?

Obviously, given her top 8 seeding and her performances in Oz and RG she needs to make the QFs. Question is, can she do it?

Semi-final

I'm hoping this is the breakthrough major for Anna.
By being seeded #8, does that mean Anna has to play either Maria or Justine in the quarters?

No, she can draw any of the seeds #1-4 in the quarters. All of them will be tough, but the best is still to draw Mauresmo's quarter.

Wimbledon is now the only Slam where Anna hasn't been past the 3rd round. Considering her winning percentage on grass is actually pretty good she'd better rectify that this year.

Yes that is true. Conversely Mauresmo is certainly thinking the same I would suspect.

Anna seems to play well on the grass so of course the goal will be to live up to her seed. I just hope she doesn't draw Venus early.

Krajicek is dangerous with the big serve, but Anna is better in every department. She's a good returner so if all goes accordinly she should move through. Hingis is not great on grass and very rusty. If Anna lost it would be shameful IMO :o

Bammer has done well in Eastbourne, and Hingis has had no preparation on grass. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Austrian in the 4th round. I think she would make a pretty tough opponent.
We'll have a better grasp of Anna's chances against Jankovic after the Ordina Open final. Jankovic didn't play all that well today, while Anna has been playing better and better as the tournament went on. A win in s'-Hertogenbosch would really boost her confidence. Давай, Анна!

goldenlox
Jun 24th, 2007, 01:30 AM
Anna has to get to Wimbledon, and be ready for Kerber. She did that after Hobart, and those who read Anna's diary know how tough that situation was.

I think her first 2 rounds should be routine. Misha won the Ordina last year, she can play on grass. Then Hingis or Bammer, either one will be difficult.
Then a rematch with Jankovic. Then a Wimbledon semi with Serena.

Yes, even though the chances are pretty slim that she'll actually play today, you can't really rest your mind when you're scheduled to play on that day.

Court 18 will be covered by the Wimbledon Live service. I'm seriously considering subscribing to it, 'cause I know for a fact that I won't be seeing Anna on TV unless she makes it to the 2nd week.

Chakvetdatze Eases Through

Tuesday, 26 June, 2007

Women’s No.8 seed Anna Chakvetdatze overcame a slow start to defeat 76th-ranked Angelique Kerber of Germany in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

For a while the 20-year-old Chakvetdatze’s prospects seemed as indifferent as the weather. Nineteen-year-old Kerber broke her more fancied opponent to love in the first game and soon found herself serving for the first set as errors sprayed from the Russian’s racquet.

The whiff of a potential upset seemed to have an effect on both players: Kerber, playing her first Wimbledon, grew tentative; Chakvetdatze found her angles and got her groove back. The eighth seed levelled for 5-5, calmly held her own serve and then seized the set by breaking the German with a barnstorming running backhand crosscourt.

Chakvetdatze, who defeated in-form Jelena Jankovic to win the grasscourt title at ’s-Hertogenbosch last week, continued to exert her authority in the second set. Although Kerber earned a break point for 3-1, she failed to convert it and after that it was one-way traffic. In the second round Chakvetdatze meets Tatiana Poutchek of Bulgaria

Anna's nerves are usually good. She just beat Jankovic in a final, and 1st set tiebreak.
This is the tournament you want to do well in. You don't want to lose to a non-contender for the title. This was a great section of the draw, and Anna went down in round 3.
Not a good sign. Especially after Rosmalen, I was expecting much more.
Same with Dinara. They both came from Rosmalen doing well, and lost early to non-contenders.
But, Dinara drew Venus in round 3, Sharapova in round 4. Anna had it much easier.

People have been mentioning Anna's inability to hold serve, but what about her inability to break? She was 1 out of 11 on BP conversions today. Against a good server like Misa, that's a lot of missed opportunities.

Her last 2 majors were good, losing QF's to the world #2.
This was a loss to a decent player, who is no threat to win this title.
The world #7 should be coming thru rounds like this.

It's not the end of the world, I think Anna will hold on to #8 after Wimbledon.
But this result will keep Anna from being considered a top player.
To make that ranking look relevant, you need to play well at majors.

I feel the same about Dinara. The ranking is great. It means you earn a great living.
But the respect comes from doing well at majors.

Matt Cronin said Krajicek worked Anna's forehand until it broke down.

He wrote this during Indian Wells -

Chakvetadze has started to work with Robert Lansdorp, Sharapova's former coach. He's not going to travel with her much, but she worked with him in LA before the tournament began and is planning to returning at some point. He loves her variety and touch but says the first thing he noticed was that she doesn't know how to hit any two balls the same way. She's always trying different speeds and spins, which is fine, but with Lansdorp students like Sharapova and Davenport, you can see just how cleanly they hit and how they are bio-mechanically programmed to smoothly strike the lines.

This is about Lansdorp - The pair will definitely reconvene later in the summer after Wimbledon when the tour moves to the United States and he is sufficiently enthused to maintain greater things could not be far away for the right-hander. “I compare her to Myskina,” he said. “She’s very intelligent and talented. There’s a lot of potential there. They were about the same age when they first came to me. Myskina was possibly a bit quicker but this girl hits a much bigger shot.”

Myskina wasn't possibly a bit quicker, she was. Not sure if Anna hits a much bigger shot either. They can both hit pretty big when they go for it especially off the backhand in Nastya's case.

I finish only now to see the Match. :(

Very disappointing because Anna should win the first set 6-1 or 6-2, clear the better player on court, but don't convert the break Points.

Then this madness before the first rain suspension and after the tie-break she lost. For me a mix of facts, first she is not able to close the first set with all these chanches and clearly dominated, then 2-3 doubtful calls (one on 8-8) and also she slips  at 7-6 in the tie-break, otherwise she can close with 8-6.

But after this she return calms on the Court and win the second set, in the third many opportunities for break on 0-2 and 2-4, but all wasted.

So, Anna is the better player on court (for me), but not converted all these opportunities she have and make also a lot of Unforced Errors in the bad moments.

I stay positive for the US Open Series.

Anna :tears:

I managed to video the first two sets of this match purely by luck so I watched it this morning.

Anna is a very emotional player but for most of this year she has kept her emotions much more under control than she used to and I think that has helped her to deal with pressure situations better. However today it was back to old-school Anna and I can't really understand why. Sure it was an important match but she had good momentum going into this with the Ordina title and a very solid win in the previous round.

This was an incredibly nervy affair from both players. I haven't seen Krajicek play for a while but she seems to have lost a little weight and is moving better and judging by the results had also played well earlier in the week. But she was totally wound up and was taking chunks out of the court with her racquet. Perhaps they were making each other tense with their antics.

It was a couple of iffy line calls and all of a sudden Anna has totally lost faith in the line judges. She started complaining about any of her shots that were just out because she'd somehow convinced herself they were all in and she was getting a raw deal. She wound herself up into such emotional turmoil that when it came to serving out the first set she couldn't do it. Anna was the better player for most of the first set and I think only has herself to blame for losing it.

Krajicek stayed solid in the second set and played well. Anna edged her out to level but this match should have been over in straight sets. I didn't see the third set but I guess Misa dealt with the rain delay better than Anna, a little surprising given what happened in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Anna's gotta cut this element out of her on-court persona. Some of it was not pretty to watch and it hasn't been the way she's behaved on court for most of this year. I would never have predicted that the fourth round out of this section would be Krajicek vs Granville and that to me stands out as a huge wasted opportunity. Wimbledon remains Anna's worst Slam.

Pink Princess
Jun 30th, 2007, 05:03 PM
It does not affect the defeat, Anna in you determine logics she had obtained the victory, everything was going phenomenal 5-3, then serve to win the set, with 30-30 she did a double fault and then a powerful flat stroke of right was out, in the tie-break she had several balls of set, if Anna had win the sure set that the result was different, the rain that for the match conditions to play God lord.

Anna is magnificent and if she it gets angry and puts faces of infuriated is simply because she wants to win everything and not to lose nothing, has winner's mentality and because of it this one where this, and the wonderful future that has.

Among other things Anna can presume in being the player that has achieved more winners in the whole Tournament up to her 3rd Round, 64 it is the number, more yesterday 48, impressively.

About that doubles match: Vikanna blew it big time. :( I can't believe they wasted a 5-1 lead for the 2nd match in a row. It's not like they were playing Stosur/Raymond or the friggin Williams sisters. I know it's "only" doubles, but failing to close out matches like this is never good for confidence.

About Anna's loss to Krajicek: I never expected the Dutch girl to be easy pickings, especially on grass. It looks like she's headed for the semifinals, so I think she deserves more credit than she's been given. I haven't seen the match, but from Wintermute's report it sounds like Anna really lost it when things got tight at the end of the 1st set. Once you start feeling everyone/everything is going against you, things can unravel pretty quickly. So yes, she didn't have the best attitude, and she'll need to work on that.

BUT: we, as fans, need to give the poor girl a break and show her more support around here! We've been really spoiled during the last year or so. Anna has made tremendous progress during that time, and because of that, we now have very high expectations. Of course, there will be setbacks from time to time. Of course, I'd like to see the media pay more attention to her and give her more respect. But when you put things in perspective, the good far outweighs the bad, and the best most definitely is yet to come.

It was not particularly bad loss. As a fan I felt worse when she lost to Sharapova in two previous slams. Maybe it was that tournament win last week. I rather see her winning small tournaments than making QF or SF in every big tournament. I love to see Anna holding a trophy :D
