Two announcements! / June 12, 2007
It’s been an amazing couple of days. I left Paris on Sunday evening. On the aeroplane the crew were very kind, they did a presentation with champagne and they also gave us a cake.

I don’t often drink alcohol but obviously this was a special occasion. Still, I didn’t drink too much in case I got drunk before we landed in Belgrade!

There was an unbelievable celebration outside the City Hall. I think there were around 10,000 people greeting me, Novak and Jelena. It was definitely an emotional time and very enjoyable. :) I want to thank everyone who came on Sunday and also to everyone who supported me at the French Open.

Seeing how much our achievements mean to the people gives me even more motivation to train hard. I’m having another day off today but I will be back on the courts on Wednesday preparing for my next tournament in Holland.

I have two announcements to make. First of all, I will be playing in the Fed Cup against the Slovak Republic after Wimbledon. It was an easy decision to make! I only missed one tie because it didn’t fit my schedule, and now that I did so well in Paris I think it’s clear I made the right decision – the girls won without me in April anyway.

I am excited because I think Jelena and I have a great chance of doing very well in the team competition. We want so much to reach the World Group.

The other thing is that I’m going to be playing less doubles. I had planned to play some tournaments with Maria Kirilenko but now I decided that I need to focus more on singles. Doubles is great fun, but it can cause problems for singles, especially when there is a rain delay, or you need extra recovery time.

The worst thing would be if I had to withdraw from the doubles competition during a Grand Slam, because I was tired and needed to rest for singles – I would feel very bad, letting down a partner like that. Actually I would play anyway out of obligation, and that would not be a good situation.

So I decided it was best not to commit to anything. Maria and I are good friends and she also thinks it’s a good decision.

Strange indeed. If it's true then I should guess that it's only for Wimbledon.
For sure there'll be a good explaination for it.

Maybe Danka committed this team w/o letting Ana know or sthg. :shrug: We know they know each other well, so maybe some time ago they planned to play together and maybe Ana forgot or sthg... Oh well, I've got no clue. :lol:

Seeing your discussion guys, I will add something. Daniela has been saying that she would concentrate on singles since start of this season - this is the reason of her split with Sugiyama who takes doubles very seriously. Well, Daniela always considered herself mainly as a singles player but I don't remember her talking about "concentrating on singles" before. btw. I am still not sure whether I realize the exact meaning of this term and what it takes to be fully concentrated. Anyway, Daniela plays doubles for one particular reason and that is "having fun". Every victory is just a bonus - "we'll go there, play and see what will happen". This approach to doubles she shares with Hingis, hence they played together in Miami and probably would've been playing in London, hadn't been Martina doubtful (and likely not willing to risk any complication with the injury in doubles matches). I guess Ana is a similar case and doubles will be rather practice matches for her in the future. That is if she really plays at Wimby with Daniela. If she wrote on her website something that goes in opposite way of what I think, then just ignore this post. Obviously I don't visit her website.

That's how I see it as well, Martin. Even though Ana has never written it directly, she takes doubles not so seriously as well IMHO. There's always talk about improving netskills and so on, which is actually true. It's always good to do it in a competitve match, when actually result doesn't mean anything. So I guess Ana is taking it as Danka, doubles are for fun... Which is not so bad attitude for Top10 players (Danka will be there by the Wimbledon time too. :p ). I guess Masza K wants to stay more serious with doubles and that's why they decided to split.

And of course Daniela is such a lovely person that everyone wanna play doubles with her. :p

For me it will be less also. Not sure what happens with Rosmalen, but I don't believe it will be big.

Ana started with a break, but then she was broken back already. That wasn't needed. After that Ana didn't had any trouble on her serve, but she didn't play well either. Not many winners.
She also kinda had a service like she had against Henin at 1-0 40-15.
In games 8th, 9 it kinda looked that Ana wasn't so sure. She didn't play the balls deep and there were too many mistakes.
When she was 6-5 behind she finally started serving. Aces were coming and the tiebreak was 7-4. Ana made a break in the 2nd game. Ana started serving better and better with totally 9 aces.
At 7-6 5-2 0-30, Ana produced 3 awesome return winners. Just at the time I was making pictures.

For a first match on grass it wasn't bad. Of course she needs more to go further in the tournament. Like always I believe she can do it.

And will it be Hantuchova now for the first time?

I don't know what to think but I am not just going to throw it away either, she has a big potential but just seems mentally unprepared in too many matches. One hot run in a while and then a littany of painful losses and ugly play especially the serve numbers. She really needs someone to connect her mentally. She is still young so time is on her side

Let me tell you this. I actually shouldn't write anything now. Better leave it alone. But here I am to post my thoughts.
It really hurted me that Ana lost. I'm not even sure if I go tomorrow. I still have tickets for the last 2 days.

And about the match. Ana started fine and had chances to break. At 3-3 I said this is not gonna be Federer - Nadal, if you don't take your BP's........then you get broken.
If you look at the result you probably will think that Ana played bad and that it's maybe the surface.
I never have seen Daniela playing like this. She made rarely mistakes and had like everything back. She played completely awesome and I don't know where that come from. It wasn't that good in the first 2 rounds. And probably she won't reach this level tomorrow.
Also too bad there wasn't hawk eye. Ana was very upset about 2 calls in game 4. "The ball landed RIGHT THERE, aren't you watching?"

Now I don't know if fanship is made for me, cause maybe it can take too much.

Well, we must still expect stuff like this to happen once in a while. Hopefully not at the big stage, though.

I like Ana's draw as well - Petrova is injured, struggling motivationally and probably won't even make it to the 4th round. Ana should make a good run to the quarters and then we'll just need to cross our fingers and see what she can come up with!

Uhm, I don't want to sound too negative about Wimbledon but:

In other news French Open finalist Ana Ivanovic has withdrawn from the Bank of the West Classic.

"Unfortunately I've had to withdraw from the Bank of the West Classic," said Ivanovic.

"The French Open, which was my first ever Grand Slam final, really took a lot out of me and already I feel like I need a rest, both physically and mentally. I am going to do my best to get through the grass court season and then I have commitments to play Fed Cup after Wimbledon. Then I really need to rest."


She added, "I'm disappointed that I am unable to play the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. I heard it's a great tournament and I was looking forward to playing there for the first time. I'm sorry to the tournament organizers and also to the fans. Hopefully I will see everyone there in the future."

I'm not suprised either, that's why I'm kinda worried.
It's not just playing RG for 2 weeks and then Rosmalen which makes her tired, but more the things around it. It looks like everyone wants something from her..

The scheduling is awful. The likes of Razzano-Meusburger and Smashnova-Muller are on much bigger courts than Ana, Chakvetadze, and Hantuchova. :help:

Yes it is because men have to play at least 3 sets. Imagine some ATP guys having to play 5-setter one day and the next one as well. It takes less to regroup for women from tough 3 sets and they can play 2 days in a row. It's tougher for guys. And yes, I'd prefer Ana to play tonight again but we can't do anything about it.

Court 18s a good court! Its one of the few outside courts with a large seating area on one side (Behind the server) Always packed with people around the court...its got a great atmosphere!

Melinda was really,really bad in the first set, in the 2nd she started playing better. Ana was slow, but FH shots were very powerfull !

I f*ckin' love DSF for once. :hearts: They're showing 2nd set of Ana's match. I'll write about it afterwards.

Ana started after the rain-break on fire, 2 great BH winners to get the break back. First was a clever DTL passing shot the next one was a bullet like CC winner. She served really well in this set. A couple of aces and also lots of unreturnables. But she didn't try her hardest during Czink's service games. :shrug: And credit to Hungarian who reallly gave her best in this set. Though whenever Ana was aggressive she won the point as easy as that. The best game was at *4-4... Molina who was umpring (the same f*cktard, who destroyed Jelena's US Open SF... well, she kind of destroyed herself too, but he was the part of it), who is becoming my least favourite umpire (even though he's sooooo in my type :o), didn't overrule a ball which was obviously out and Ana started to argue with him, which was totally cute. :lol: :kiss: On the next point he overruled the ball, and again he was wrong! :tape: Ana gave him that glare and fired her 6th ace in the next point. :lol: :devil: Next point was the best rally of the set, won by Czink with a stunning BH DTL winner after a really powerful Ana's FH. Well done! But Ana fired 7th ace in the next pt and 2 unreturnable serves to win the game. Next games weren't that special, both holding comfortably (Ana held for 6-5* with 8th ace). Ana had a MP at 6-5* after Czink's error, but Melinda saved it with a brave FH DTL which was too good for Ana. Melinda hit a BH DTL winner & FH CC winner to take the match into the TB. She was really giving her best today.

1-0* - service winner.
1-1* - defensive BH slice just wide.
*2-1 - stop volley just wide.
*3-1 - service winner.
3-2* - good dictating play by Melinda after aggresive FH return.
4-2* - FH DTL too strong.
*4-3 - poor Ana on the run from side to side, FH into the net at the end.

6-3* - good pt Ana, Melinda forced to make an error.

Ever present mum was in the stands, but also Milos & dad were there as well as Scott (he almost totally shove his head :eek:) and Sven. There was another guy sitting with them and chatting with them who looked 'Serbish' too, but I've got no idea who it was.

I don't really like Ana's outfit. The cut is fine, but I think skirt is at least 5cm too long. It makes a huge difference (and you know I'm not saying it just because I want to see more of her legs! :lol: :o).

Anyway confident start for Ana. Really good to see her serving well. :)

Good win for Ana eariler today. :clap2: The first set went as expected, but the second set was obviously more of a struggle, but Ana responded well to win the tiebreaker to clinch the match. In all it was a good performance to start out in Wimbledon. Obviously there are some things Ana needs to work on, but other than that i`m pleased with the win. :)

Ana's match is scheduled first on court #13. But they start earlier than usually 11am local time (12.00 CET). I can't follow it from the beginning. :( Also doubles to be played later on (4th match) on the same court.

Just finished, Ana through in straight sets. Didn't think it was a great game to be honest; Ana just did what she had to in order to win.

She looks in great shape but I think grass will be her worst surface because her movement is still suspect.

I just caught Ana's interview on the livestream. Ana was totally cute as always, smiling all the time.

I burst out laughing when Ana asked about if she thinks her game suits to grass, she replied 'yes, I serve well and like coming to the net!' Ana, honey - stop lying, you at the very least don't like it! :spit::o I somehow doubt that she just pretends to stop herself from coming to the net and she still goes how she likes coming to the net. :tape:

On the side note Ana speaking in Serbian is a joy to hear. If I understood well she was asked about playing doubles during Olympics, but she said she's not sure, but she wants to concentrate on singles. She was also asked whose idea was to play doubles and she blamed Danka. :lol:

If only Tu had not surrendered her serve in the very first game of the match, she would have had a real chance of taking the opening set the full distance. Ivanovic was having difficulty getting into her stride early on but Tu's errors at the same stage of the proceedings proved to be the clinching difference between the two players.
The 29-year-old American, who may not be a familiar name to many but was in fact playing her 10th Wimbledon, had two immediate chances to break back but could not make them count.
Whatever sixth-seeded Ivanovic knew of her opponent - they had never played before this – she did not take long to become frustrated with her inability to dominate a player now at a career-high ranking of 38. When her first serve at 2-1 deuce was called marginally long, she banged her racket on the court and asked umpire Mohamed Lahyani rhetorically: “This must be a joke, right?”
But there was little to make her smile about her misfiring first serve. When it was working well, it was a formidable weapon – during the first set barely half her first serves were in, but when it was she grabbed four points in every five.
Tu clearly sensed her opponent's irritation and produced some clear-thinking tactics to trouble Ivanovic further. Four times in the first set the world number six required an ace to dig herself out of trouble.

She has the perfect game for grass, but now more acting like a clay courter? She improved on many areas, but the tactics are not what you can call great.
If you have a great serve, great forehand and likes to go to the net and also being tall. Then why is she making it so hard for herself.

Good, so it wasn't just me who noticed this.

She hit reasonably well, but her movement wasn't too flash.

She's in great shape, and she has more control and more variety in her game now, the only thing missing is the top notch movement. She probably won't ever be a grear mover, but if she can improve this then she would be mighty hard to beat.

No, it's not all about movement. But it will make it a lot easier for her. Tennis is just improving all the time. And so movement becomes more important.
At RG her movement looked fine. When hardcourt season starts again, I guess her movement will getting better again.

Well she’s well on track to win but it has been far from a convincing performance. Her game has improved significantly over the past 6 or so months but she’s still got a long way to go before she becomes the player she is capable of being.

She’s been caught flat footed far too often and therefore has been hitting a lot of balls into the net. Considering where it’s come from her backhand has improved a great deal but it’s still a work in progress. She gives it too much loop and the heavy hitters such as the Williams’ and Jankovic will punish it.

Ana actually stopped the match about 5/10 minutes before the rain came because she felt the court was too slippery behind the baseline (She'd slipped over earlier in the first set), the umpire agreed with her so they stopped the match to dry the court up. Luckily she did stop it because it made her exit with the rain far more swift!

So she plays tennis AND predicts the rain....what a talented girl! :p

I'm glad about that! She's already number 6 with 2 Tier I titles and a grandslam final. And still you can see that she can improve much more. If she reaches her full level then for me it's absolutely sure she wins more than 1 slam and becomes number 1.
