Anna will have her highest seed ever at a major for the French Open

I would be thrilled if she can live up to her seeding. Seems doubtful to me since she is not so hot on clay but we will see.

She should at the very least do better than last year.

Wintermute

Anna is unlucky to just miss out on a Top 8 seeding. That is unless there's another high profile withdrawal. But as we know it all really comes down to the draw and who is in her section. If she gets a decent draw I think she can take advantage.

hu2891601
May 21st, 2007, 09:44 PM
for this year's FO only, I'm glad that Anna missed out the top 8 seedings. cause if you look at the rankings, #17-24 is wayyy easier than #25-32. lol.

Personally, I'm hoping for QF but I would be content if Anna got to 4th round.

I agree with you, 4th Round or better a QF.
And for me it's good if Anna lost after 2-3 good Matches and lose fighting with a hard player on Clay.

I would be very pleased if she lived up to her seeding. Making 3rd round would be fine too.

Since she has sucked on clay I'm not going to get my hopes very high.

I really think she can make it to the QFs. She has played the big matches well this year and wouldn't lose to someone that she should beat.

Pretty much a great draw in my opinion. I don't think Molik should be too difficult. And looking further ahead Mauresmo in the 4th is not bad at all. First off she could be gone by then at the hands of Safarova and if not she has never handled the pressure well.

Wintermute
May 25th, 2007, 05:56 PM
Anna is in the best quarter of the draw. Jankovic, Williams and Henin are all safely away in the top half. Molik isn't what she once was and assuming she doesn't suddenly bring out the form of old then Anna should be okay for the first couple of rounds. I think she can be pleased with this, but remember it's one match at a time!

Go and beat Molik !!!

Foot's Fingers
May 30th, 2007, 07:37 AM
Molik is happy with a draw:

My aim is to always to do better than last year, in each tournament. So if make a quarter-final here I’ll be a very happy girl,” she explains. Molik has her work cut out in the first round as she faces the No.9 seed Anna Chakvetadze, but the Aussie gives her draw a positive spin. “I’m better off playing her early,” she reasons. “I’m up for the challenge and I’m feeling relaxed. I trained on clay in Melbourne and I’m on form."
Her Russian opponent would do well not to underestimate her rejuvenated opponent, who may still be some way short of her best but is playing with a freshness and spontaneity that is rarely found in players who have been on the tour for a number of years. “I’m enjoying it more now. That’s for sure,” says Molik, with a sparkle in her eye.

After that horrible restart I was worried it would all go downhill. It was getting really dark out there. Let's forget about the tiebreak. :tape:

I think the conditions today were probably the ones least favored by Anna. Cold, damp, overcast, the tennis balls are heavy and it's slow going.

Maybe Svazay just played very well

Svazay play very well at the restart of the Match, then Anna regrups, but Szavay continues to fighting.

Anna play also well for me, a lot of errors, but in many cases it's a great defence by Agnes or forced errors.

In first and second set Anna plays better than Agnes, but the best of this Match is coming in the third set, by both players, strong defences, nice plays from the baseline and a lot of net approches.

One of the negative things is that Anna don't convert many BP in the second set and can finish before the rain delay, and also these 5 minutes from 5-4 to 0-1 in the 3rd set, but I repeat that Szavay plays a great tennis in these moments.

The court it's ok, but it's difficult to make Winners, and also both players are very aggressive on return games, Szavay plays for 3-4 Times a stop ball on the 2nd serve of Anna, and Anna play near the lines on the second serves of Szavay.

Not accurate at all. I don't think I've seen a women with 20 or more winners according to there stats and that can't possibly be the case. Errors might not be as inaccurate but the sheer lack of winners is what is glaring to me.

I've seen Szavay play once or twice before, but I don't really remember anything about her game. She didn't make much of an impression on me. :o She's Hungarian, and she's almost 2 years younger than Anna (although you wouldn't know it by looking at her).
I don't expect her to be much of a threat to our girl. :)
Looks like I was wrong. :o
I had a feeling Anna wouldn't be able to close it out at 5-4. I thought the match would only resume on Friday though, so I didn't follow the rest on the scoreboard. Which is just as well, because I don't need any more gray hair ;). The conditions must have been very difficult.

Well Glad she won

Anna was worried abt the match vs qualifier who have plaied plenty in Paris already

But she started very confident adn was in total control until rain

Even had chances to finish later wasting some bps at the end of second set

Then.....

Total meltdown and breaks fest in final set But honestly i was sure she should win

All credits to Szavay who neve gave up in the match

It was like to different matches But both won by Anna ;)

And she has already passed to 3rd rnd which is better then last year ;)

In interviw after the match she looked phisically and mentally tired of the match But she said that she has day off and will recover (forget abt dbls? )

Well, after watching Safarova's match on TV and reading on how Anna has played in the first week, I have to say I'm not very confident in her chances. I hope I'm wrong. Lucie was impressive against Mauresmo. This is going to be a tough match, especially if she serves well. Anna has to mix it up and find a way to prevent Lucie from dictating the points.

Another GS quarterfinal would be great. But reaching the 4th round at the FO is already an acceptable result.

This is the absolute minimum we expected from her... from now on every win is a plus. Lucie is moving very well and has good length in her shots. Player portrait: Anna Chakvetadze

Saturday, June 2, 2007
By Benjamin Adler

http://www.rolandgarros.com/images/pics/large/b_g_chakvetadze2_0602.jpg

Anna Chakvetadze broke into the top 10 at the end of May, four short years after turning pro, and she does not intend stopping there. We met the 20 year-old Russian and found her cool, calm, and fiercely determined to succeed at the highest level.

"I donít need inspiration, I can think for myself," she tells us, shortly after her comfortable victory over Ai Sugiyama. On the back of her quarter-final at the Australian Open, the No.9 seed has taken her progress to the last sixteen very much in her stride. "Iím happy because I played a lot better today, which explains why I was calmer on the court. I controlled things well," she says in flawless English.

ďIím ambitiousĒ

Chakvetadze is accompanied on tour by her Georgian father while her Ukrainian mother looks after her younger brother at home. She needs no prompting when we ask her about her ambitions. "Iím not the type to announce what my objectives are; to win a Grand Slam or whatever. Everyone wants to win them. Iíd like to get into the top 5 for sure but I take things as they come and try to do my best."

Anna has something of a reputation for being very emotional on court, even to the point of breaking into tears. Though she travels without a coach, she has been receiving guidance from Robert Landsdorp, the former mentor of Maria Sharapova, Pete Sampras and Anastasia Myskina. That is in Los Angeles, where she will return to prepare for the North American leg of the tour, prior to the US Open. Chakvetadze has been compared to Martina Hingis, with a game that is more varied than many of her compatriots. That may go to explain her meteoric rise through the rankings since her debut on the ITF tour in 2001, in Minsk.

Moscow memories

By 2004 she was playing in her first Grand Slam, at the US Open, where she reached the third round, beating Myskina on the way. "Thatís a great memory. I couldnít believe it at the time. It was a dream to beat the No.1 Russian, someone who had won Roland Garros that year," remembers the Wimbledon juniors finalist of 2003.

2005 saw her enter the top 50, and in 2006 she won her first two titles, in Guangzhou and her home town of Moscow. "To win the Kremlin Cup at home was fantastic. The win in China gave me a lot of confidence. When I beat a top 10 player I tell myself I can really go far and my game improves," she says. Anna has a title to her name this year too, in Hobart, and made the semi-finals in Miami, Warsaw and Montreal.

"Itís important to be consistent", reasons the future opponent of Lucie Safarova, a friend among many on the circuit. "I have a lot of friends on tour but we forget our friendship when we meet on court,Ē says Chakvetadze. Whether she is facing friend or foe, Anna Chakvetadze knows she only needs to concentrate on her own game. Her natural talent usually does the restÖ

Russia's Anna Chakvetadze blows a kiss after beating Lucie Safarova, of Czech Republic, in a fourth round match of the French Open tennis tournament, at the Roland Garros stadium, in Paris, Sunday, June 3, 2007. Chakvetadze won 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.

That's a nice comeback win for Anna over Safarova. :) Now she needs to take the next step and make a grand slam semifinal for the first time.

Anna plays Sharapova, just like the AO. Anna can win. She has to compete like she did in the 3rd set today.

Anna has once again snuck through the draw with relatively little coverage on her by the media. She has a chance to revenge her loss at the AO. Sharapova's serve is slower now, she can't get so many cheap points. GL is right, Anna needs to play like she did in the 3rd set today. High first serve percentage, try to keep the errors down, and importantly to take her opportunities which is something she didn't do in Melbourne.

Nice match and shots from Anna, expecially in the 3rd set.

And we can forget this 'Coffee Break' in the 2nd set. :spit:

Anna is very strong today, she level up her game and this time she is also able to close the first set and the Match on his service!

Brava Anna!!!!

It's a big match and Anna can win if she can hold her serve and play well for 2 sets.

Not live here either and I'll be at work so I can't even video it. :( Eurosport might show extended highlights late afternoon/early evening though.

I borrowed a friend's newspaper at work today and there was an article about Maria vs Patty. It said that in the next round Sharapova will "take on her slightly loopy compatriot, ninth seed Anna Chakvetadze".

Same here. Nevertheless looking forward to the match. In my books it's better than Masha vs. A. Mauresmo. Though gotta stick with the stats. and fancy Masha to come through. Anna's done very well to make Qf's at RG. The Davydenko vs. Canas match should have been before the blonde Russians match.

Why isn't Anna/Maria in Chartrier? Surprising since Maria is the #2 seed.

While Maria can't serve with her normal power she will try to overhwelm Anna off the ground and try to grind her into the dirt. :tennis: :smash:  If Anna can survive Maria's ground assault and force Masha into alot of errors should will have a good chance to win the match. And Anna needs to hold serve better than she did when she played Masha in Australia. This match is the biggest moment of Anna's grand slam career because unlike in their 2007 Australian Open quarterfinal Anna has a good chance to beat Maria. It will be interesting to see how she handles the occasion.

Don't mind if they play at Lenglen but I think but players sell better than Davydenko vs. Canas. And for most coming home around 5 p.m they got at least a chance to watch a big part of the match (maybe not the whole match). I just find it a pity, that this match didn't take place later.

Paris, France (June 3): Anna Chakvetadze of Russia pumped herself up during her match against Lucie Safarova. Chakvetadze escaped with the win after dropping the second set at love. She has equaled her best Grand Slam showing to date as her previous best finish was reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open earlier this year where she lost to Maria Sharapova. She will be looking to avenge that loss as the two will face off next for a berth in the semifinals.

One thing I wrote on Anna's website, on that last point of the first set, she just let Sharapova float back that running backhand. You have to follow those good shots to the net, even if you aren't a good volleyer. Because a player like Sharapova and Ivanovic will go back to controlling the point if you just wait for their floater, and they get back in position, and you have to hit another great shot to win the point.

Anna has to be dissapointed in losing to Maria who has a weak serve at the moment. How did Maria serve? It will be interesting to see if Anna can take the next step and become a top 10 fixture the next couple of years. She does need to win more points at the net than she does. That would make winning matches against the elite baseline bashers easier than it currently is for Anna.

I do not understand what has made Anna today in the court, it is obvious that she is to play much more aggressive and was so static, nonetheless great Tournament. I believe that she has to consider and to appear this type of appointments risking much more that in the end if you do not do it there was happening what has happened today obviously.

Many rages when she loses.

:bigcry:I so badly wanted Anna to win this. At least she did as well against Maria as Serena did against Justine.

I suppose I shouldn't be too disappointed. Anna has had an extremely good tournament after her lacklustre clay season. I think now I have raised my expectations for her so it is still not nice to see her lose once she's got this far. I didn't see the match so I can't comment on how they both played but I hope Anna gave it a good shot and was just outplayed.

I'm excited for the grass season now even if she might not be coming to Birmingham this year.

Day 10 - An interview with Anna Chakvetadze - Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Video interview (http://www.rolandgarros.com/media/video/INT.chakvetadze.anna.05062007_EN_480x360_400kbps.f lv) (Anna looks like she doesn't want to be there!)

Q. First of all, I would like to know if you called Robert Landsdorp before the match, and did he give you some advice?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, I didn't call him. He didn't give me advice.

Q. Then, would you say you are suffering from an inferiority complex faced to Maria Sharapova?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Sorry?

Q. An inferiority complex, do you understand that?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Complex?

Q. Yes.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I don't have complexes, sorry.

Q. So how did you feel today?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Truly? Very bad. Really, very, very bad I felt today.

Q. Could you just follow up, why were you feeling bad? What was wrong?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I feel for two, three days already, and I had a day off yesterday to I took it back and keep my energy for today's match, but it didn't work.

In the first set when the score was 3-All, I felt really tired. But I just said to myself that if I go out -- if I went out to the court, I need to fight till the end, so I was trying to do that, but it was very difficult.
