Q. Just talk about the match, just how you're feeling coming into the tournament a little bit.
ANA IVANOVIC: Oh, I'm really happy with my game, today, especially through the first match. And since Sunday, I was expecting I might play next day, next day. So it's always tough. It takes away a lot of energy.
But, yeah, considering all that, I was really happy with my performance today. And obviously the court's are a little bit heavy, so I tried to not rush too much, take more time and focus on what I have to do. And, yeah, it was really exciting.

Q. The Serbians have had a lot of success lately. I mean, you left at 12 to go to Switzerland. Tell me how that came about, how you made that decision?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's very, very nice for me to see that so many people from Serbia doing good at the moment. And it's exciting for all of us, because that's motivation for each of us.
I was always kind of practicing back in Serbia and was going a little bit to Switzerland because my manager was there, and also a quarter of the time he used to live there. So that's why I've been going to Switzerland a lot. But otherwise I was practicing at home.
And I really hope that now with all the success we have, that the people will start investing more in making some facilities because that's what we need for our further success.

Q. Is it possible to stay in Serbia and become a really great tennis player or is it necessary, really, to leave the country?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think when we were younger, it was much tougher because tennis wasn't as popular as it's becoming now. So the Association didn't really take care of about us well.
But now I hope that it will change with so many of us playing better, and also many young kids are starting to play tennis. So that will ‑‑ that should motivate also our tennis association to do a better job with the a facilities and coaches.
But I think we have great talent. I think it would be possible. Just it needs to be worked a little bit on that.

Q. How recognized how are you in Serbia?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's hard to say, change over the time. But now people recognize me whenever, wherever I go. And it's kind of nice feeling because, you know, the people actually follow the results. But on the other hand, you lose a little bit of privacy. But, yeah, it's exciting; it's different.

Q. Do you consider it a coincidence that the three of you have had this success at the same time? You're from Serbia, but you're world citizens in a way. You've all spent a good deal of time overseas.
ANA IVANOVIC: I think we have great ambassadors of our country. We are all very young. So it's great to see the all doing well at the same time and having three or four top 10 players. It's unbelievable success for our country, and I think they should appreciate it back home because who knows when it's going to happened again. And this is a great time for our tennis.

Q. Is there any way to talk about a Serbian style? Is there anything you guys have in common that you can put your finger on?
ANA IVANOVIC: I think we're all very good fighters, and we have, like, tough mentality, so I think that's what we probably have in common.

Q. Would it be exaggerating to say ‑‑ you all in different ways experience the trouble in your country from, you know, many years ago. Is it a stretch to say that you appreciate what you have more because of that?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think definitely we appreciate it much more, and also we appreciate opportunity we got. And that's what is very exciting for us to see, and it was ‑‑ it was tough times, and there is no doubt about that. But I think we all came strong. And, yeah, as you said, we appreciate it and we try to take every opportunity.

Q. Who identified you as a talent in Serbia when you were young? I mean, do other people, coaches have a good eye for talent?
ANA IVANOVIC: When I was a kid, quite few coaches used to say I'm very talented and I have good potential. And I always had quite powerful game. I was always moving forward and trying to attack every ball. And they said I had good potential.
And then when I played tournament under 12 in France, then they, the manager from Switzerland, the guy, he saw me and he asked me if I would come to Switzerland to try practice two weeks. And that's actually where I would say a turning‑point. They started managing my traveling and coach expenses.
So, yeah, I would say that was a very important time of my life.

This was in today's USA Today paper. Thought the Ana fans would like to see it.

Postcard from Paris: Ivanovic finds time for '24,' not sights

By Joe Fleming, USA TODAY
Ana Ivanovic, 19, of Serbia enters the French Open at a career-high No. 7 in the world. Ivanovic won a clay-court title in Berlin two weeks ago for her first victory of the year, and this week she will be looking to improve on her best Grand Slam tournament result (quarterfinals at the French Open in 2005). Ivanovic, who is scheduled to faceSofia Arvidsson of Sweden today, looks ahead to the competition in Paris in an e-mail to USA TODAY.
"Before the season started, I said my goal was to reach the top 10, and I achieved this when I won Berlin. Reaching the final of Tokyo (a loss to Martina Hingis in February) also was a highlight. There have been some tough losses, too, but I definitely think I improved. …

"At this stage in my career, I can improve everything. So I am working on all areas of my game. Tactics and footwork are important, but I also practice volleys and serve. …

"(Since arriving in Paris) I have been busy with practice, fitness work and treatment, so unfortunately I have not had a chance to see much of the city so far. … I have spent a lot of my free time watching 24 and Lost! …

"I love playing on clay, so that has to be my favorite thing about this tournament. Also, I have very good memories of this tournament because I reached the quarterfinals two years ago the first time I played here.

"So far, my least favorite thing is the weather. The rain has been frustrating for everyone. :(

"(As for strategy on clay) I am not a player who waits. I am a very aggressive player on all surfaces. On clay I just concentrate on playing my own game and stepping into the court. Of course the rallies are longer, so I have to be more patient, but I am still trying to hit many winners. …

"The most important thing is to take it match by match. I know this may be a boring answer, but it is true. In the past, sometimes I was too excited about draws. It's very important just to focus on each match. If I can do this and stay healthy, I think I have a good chance to do well."

Ana played well for the most part. TTC's stats had her as +11 for the match. She was dominant in the first set, pushing Mirza around as Mirza made errors at bad times. The second was a bit strange, she seemed to lose some steam. She played better at the key moments though. She also played some very solid defense. Her serving was wonderful

I couldn't see anything from the match, but I'm really happy with the result!
1st serve was only 59% in, but she scored well with it!
No chances in doubles today, so now she can really focus on the singles.
I kinda hoped that Poutchek won in 3, but it's Olaru.
Ana probably knows very little about her. She's a young talented player who got nothing to lose. So it can be a really tough match. :scared:
Of course I'm confident, but I just hope for the best. I know that Ana can make it.

Just saw a little highlights package of the game, and from what I could gather her movement appears to have improved drastically. For those that have seen her play, is that the case?

That has always been my biggest concern about her game, and it appears that it's improved out of sight. If so that's a HUGE plus. :yeah:

From RG website:

Sharapova and Ivanovic – bottom-half wonders

By Matthew Cronin
Saturday, June 2, 2007

Maria Sharapova briefly strained, but Ana Ivanovic never broke a sweat as two of the top seeds in the bottom half of the draw charged into the fourth round on Saturday.

Sharapova registered a 6-1, 6-4 win over obscure Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, while Ivanovic punched out Romanian Ioana Olaru 6-2, 6-0.

Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova also got through, rolling over Dominica Cibulkova 6-2, 6-3.

Playing in just her second tournament since March, Sharapova moved well during a dry and sunny day on Court Philippe Chatrier, playing standout defence and pushing her foe around the court.

Kudryavtseva briefly rallied in the second set when her hard ground strokes began to find the lines, but Sharapova rebounded from a 1-4 deficit by mixing up the direction of her shots.

“I figured her out pretty quickly," Sharapova said. “I think I played a pretty solid first set, but I had a little bit of a letdown. It was a bit strange. I was making a lot of unforced errors in a period of a very short time and in a way I was happy that I was able to come back. But in a way, it was also lousy because I know not a lot of people are going to let me get away with that. So it's a good reminder for the future to not let that happen again.”

Still feeling the effects of a shoulder injury that she suffered at the beginning of the year and that kept her out of action for two and half months, the second seeded Sharapova didn't make much an impression with her serve, but she said when the tournament began that she believes that she could win a number of matches without her big heater and so far, she been proven correct.

In her previous five appearances in Paris, Sharapova has reached two quarterfinals, but last year, she choked a huge lead to Dinara Safina in the fourth round. This year, she's planning on closing out matches if given the opportunity.

Sharapova faces a tough test in her next round, as she will confront the clay court loving Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, who beat her the only time they played on clay at 2005 Rome. However, Sharapova has bested Schnyder four times on hard courts.

“I'm ready for any battle,” Sharapova said. “It's definitely not an easy match. I'll need to be patient. It's going to be my mindset going into the match. But I also need to be playing my game. I've got to do the things that I still do best and compete and fight, and hope that I don't have any letdowns. Because she has more experience than the girl I played today, and she's not going to let you get away with that.”

Considered by some analysts to be the favourite of the bottom half of the draw, No. 7 Ivanovic has made quick work of her first three opponents, dropping only lost seven games in three matches.

“It's an amazing feeling, and especially, she's a young girl, up coming,” Ivanovic said. “She played some good tennis. She won a lot of matches. So I knew it will be tough match. But she's a good player, and I was a little bit nervous today. And I had to work for points, because I didn't feel as comfortable there as the other two matches I played. So my serve was not working as well as it was last match. I had to work hard for it.”

Ivanovic can crush the ball off both wings, and with her broad shoulders and powerful legs is one of the few top women who are not faking it when she launches an inside-out forehand. She is also comes in to net quite a bit and is the best young volleyer on the tour.

The 19-year-old had an erratic start to the year, reaching the Tokyo final, and falling early at Indian Wells and Miami. But once she got on to clay, her game began to pick up steam. She reached the semi-finals of Amelia Island on green clay and last month, won her second career Tier I title by taking down Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Berlin final on red clay.

In the past, she has taken down every major seed on her side of the draw, including Amelie Mauresmo, whom she upset at 2005 Roland Garros.

“I think at the moment in women's tennis there is not one person that you can say, 'Oh, I can beat her,” Ivanovic said. “Everything is open. It just depends at the time, the day, who is playing better tennis.
Obviously, I beat most of them, it's amazing feeling to see that actually I can be one of the players competing for a title.

Ivanovic, will play the winner of the match between Daniela Hantuchova and Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Ana's interview from today:

Day 7 - An interview with Ana Ivanovic - Saturday, June 2, 2007

Q. At this stage of the tournament where, obviously, you've gotten used to the conditions over the first two rounds, now you're looking at getting into the business end of the tournament. How nice is it to have a relatively comfortable win like that?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's an amazing feeling, and especially, she's a young girl, up coming. She played some good tennis. She won a lot of matches. So I knew it will be tough match. But she's a good player, and I was a little bit nervous today. And I had to work for points, because I didn't feel as comfortable there as the other two matches I played.
So my serve was not working as well as it was last match. So, yeah, as I said, I had to work hard for it. But I'm really happy I could win this match.

Q. And still feeling good physically?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yes. Yeah, very good. Obviously, today was a little bit also nervous, so I was probably not moving as well. ^ I had small steps. But yeah that's matches you need to get through, and I'm happy about that. So hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Q. What did you expect from this tournament? Do you think you can go farther than two years ago when you went to the quarterfinals?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, it's obviously every tournament I play I want to win. But it's hard to talk about that at the moment. I still haven't reached the semifinal for Grand Slam. So it's important to take it step by step. And, I mean, there is no easier opponent especially reaching fourth round. Any player who reaches that, is very good, and it's going to be a tough match. So, yeah, I just want to enjoy out there and play the best I can. And, as I said, I feel very good on the courts, so that's important.

Q. This is the best three rounds I would think you've had to start a Grand Slam. You've only lost a few games, so just talk about why that's happening. Is it just more experience, knowing how to play certain opponents, or is it more your level?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think also getting confidence, winning Berlin, it helps a lot. And I feel I had really good preparation before coming here, and I feel more comfortable playing on the clay also. My movement is much better, so I think they're all little parts that has something to do with it.
Obviously, yeah, getting in there, I wanted to take my time and take it match by match and enjoy it. I work really good so far, and that's the way I feel I can improve, just taking it step by step. And, yeah, as I said, there is no easy opponent.

Q. Your level is obviously very good. So going into the next week, how much of your results will be based on mental, and how much will it just be strokes and physical?
ANA IVANOVIC: I think, especially getting into a second week, it's lot of mental strength as well. And that's also a part I feel I improved over last couple of weeks and months. So I feel more confident, and that's going to help me, my game, as well.
And also I think I take more time between points to focus on what I have to do. And, yeah, just basically play automatic and play the way I can.

Q. Is this because you're maturing, or is part of this because you're working with ^ Sven, and the coach, and it seems to be going well, he's telling you things that maybe you didn't hear before?
ANA IVANOVIC: I think there's many, many parts of it that can make a complete different result. It's also I work very hard in Barcelona, and I had good days. And I feel fit, so that helps as well. And also winning more matches, getting more confidence, and playing more consistent, and those are all the little parts that make difference. And at the moment I feel very good about my situation, and Sven is helping me a lot.
Obviously, I'm not going to play against him as a player. But i realize he's a great coach, very good experience. So those are all things which I need in order to reach my goals.

Q. Is there a chance your arrangement with him might be extended, or is it still very temporary?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, just recently we spoke again. He's going to continue helping me. But he also works for others, so he's going to help other players as well. But when he has some time, sure, he's going to help me. Because it's been really good, and I enjoy working with him. I think he also enjoys helping me, so that's a very good situation to have.

Q. He'll be there in Wimbledon?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yes, he will be there.

Q. You're friends with Djokovic, yeah?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yes.

Q. Has his success helped you? I mean, have you guys fed off each other, do you think?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, for sure. It's great to see him doing so well. And I was saying, watching him, I can learn a lot. And I can also ‑‑ because I know him for such a long time, I can see the way he improved. He got mature, and his game changed. And I can take some positive things watching him and some of his tricks on the court, and I can use it for my game and trying to improve. Because, obviously, men's tennis is a little bit different than women's. Yeah, I can use some of his tricks.

Q. Do you watch Jelena, and do you get anything from her and her success in the last year?
ANA IVANOVIC: I prefer to watch men's tennis. I think we can learn a lot from it. So, yeah, I ‑‑ I prefer to watch men.

Q. Why is that in particular?
ANA IVANOVIC: Because I think men, they're playing really good and we can learn a lot, especially on the clay. They play so many rallies, and they play with a lot of speed. I think women's sometimes can play more powerful but more flatter. So, I think, tactical‑wise I think we can learn more from men.

Q. Are you trying to hit with more spin, you had a very flat forehand, you still do. But I remember when you were younger, it was very flat?
ANA IVANOVIC: But I think it's important to mix up and also ‑‑ with ‑‑ hitting with more speed you have less pressure on yourself to hit a good shot. Also I was practicing a lot with guys, and they hit quite a lot of spin down there. So, I think, that will help me with the change a little bit.

Q. You've beaten all the other favorites on your side of the draw. You beat Maria, you've beaten Mauresmo, Kuznetsova. Is it fair to say you're one of the favorites on the draw? Can you think that?
ANA IVANOVIC: I don't think that way. I just want to enjoy the match. And, obviously, I think at the moment in women's tennis there is not one person that you can say, Oh, I can beat her. Everything is open. It just depends at the time, the day, who is playing better tennis.
Obviously, seeing that and seeing that I, as you said I beat most of them, it's amazing feeling to see that actually I can be one of the players competing for a title.

Q. What are your Fed Cup plans?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's still in negotiation. And, as I said, I would really like to play for my country. This is amazing feeling, and I think, we can have a place in the world group. And we have unbelievable team. So it would be great to play.
But, as I said, each tournament I represent my country, and I try to do it in best possible way. And we will see what happens.

Q. Jelena was talking yesterday how she smiles on court. She likes to laugh. It takes pressure off and, it just helps her. A lot of people think tennis players take it all so seriously. What's your view on that? Do you like to have fun out there?
ANA IVANOVIC: Each match I play, I try to have fun and try to enjoy. And I think it's important to focus on what you have to do, you know. And, just, if you smile, it comes naturally. And, you know, you can't think about it or force it. It's just the way it goes. But I think when you are out there, it's most important to focus on your game, and then you have fun.

Today's interview:

Day 8 - An interview with Ana Ivanovic - Sunday, June 3, 2007

Q. A little more difficult today, but what brought you through?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, definitely it was great match today. She played some really good tennis. And there was some stage where I think neither of us was making unforced errors. It was all, yeah, winners.
So it was a very tough match, but I'm really happy that I pulled through. And then she was also a little bit lucky but that's all part of the game, I guess. My serve was working really well, which helped me to get through. And I saved some break points I was facing through the match.

Q. How excited are you to get to this point, and how do you feel you're playing right now? Where is your level, do you think?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, very exciting to be back in the quarters here. It's a great time for me, and I feel physically fit. So I managed to pull through this match. And obviously day off tomorrow will help me.
But I feel very good. And I won lots of matches lately, so that's all the things that give you confidence. So, yeah, I'm very excited to be back in the quarters and to have a chance to compete to get further.

Q. You obviously have been in the quarters before. How is your mindset different now than it was then, and do you have much more confidence going forward? Do you have more because of that experience?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, that was amazing experience that, for sure, will help me in my match on Tuesday. And I feel much more mature, and also I have much more experience since then. Those are all little things that's going to help me to get through.
And also, I play Kuznetsova before, recently in finals in Berlin. So, yeah, I'm very, very excited to have chance to play again in the quarters, and I hope I can do better than last time.

Q. Do you actually now allow yourself to think, "Hey, I can actually win this thing; I'm now in the position where, you know, the match is close"?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, it's very exciting, because as you enter the second week, it's much tougher opponent, but also you have more confidence winning matches and getting there. So those are things get exciting.
But I think it's important to still stay calm and focus on what you have to do. Because if you get too excited, especially myself, if emotions start to interfere, then it's not good. So I just don't want to get too excited and I want to try to play the best I can and the way I played lately. So that's the way I can get through.

Q. Did you notice that right from the beginning that Justine and Serena and Jelena are in the top half of the draw and you're in the bottom, and maybe most people think they're the three favorites. So does it make you feel better that maybe have a better chance? Coming from the bottom is a better place to be?
ANA IVANOVIC: To be honest, I haven't looked at the draw at all. Yeah, I mean, it's exciting. As I said there is, so many good players. Justine and Jelena and Serena, they're definitely the favorites.
But, yeah, I mean, that's the way it goes. Sometimes you have to play against them early, sometimes not. But they've brought so much to the tennis and it's going to be very exciting matches.

Q. I think some people think you're maybe better on hard courts. Do you feel you're just as good or better on clay? How do you feel?
ANA IVANOVIC: At the moment, I think I'm enjoying playing on the clay much more. I feel I improve my fitness a lot which helps on clay, because you have to do a lot of running. And now I feel comfortable, and, yeah, I really enjoy.

Q. A lot of people don't know your story growing up. Can you tell us what it was like growing up. You played mostly in Belgrade, no, more so than the other two? And I've heard stories about you were there during the bombing. I don't know if that's true. Can you just tell us what that was like.
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, well, I stayed in Serbia most of my career, and also during the bombing. That was, I would say, the toughest times, because it was very hard. It was going on for three months. It was very hard to practice. In the beginning, we wouldn't practice. Later on, we kind of got used to that and we would practice 7:00 in the morning and try to live as normal as possible. Those were all little tougher times, I would say.
Also after that, we had a lot of traveling and getting visa for different countries. So, yeah, those were really tough times. But, I mean, I got chance and I got managers from Switzerland, so I could practice there, spend a little bit more time there. Looking back, that was important part of my career and I'm really thankful to them.

Q. Back to the match, during the second set, there was a man who was crying a lot for Anabel. Did it disturb you because you lose after the set?
ANA IVANOVIC: No, not really, because it was great atmosphere out there today. I mean, I really enjoyed playing. The crowd was really fair and really good. But I guess in the second set, I had still chances and I broke her. I was 3-2 up, serving, and I had some chances. I wasn't as aggressive as I should have been. And I start playing a little bit more defensive and trying to play safe more than attack. First of all that was not my game. And second of all, it gave her chance to dominate.
And I think that's what made the difference. And she played some really good tennis then. I was really happy that from the beginning of the third set, I could regain my focus and still be conscious of what I have to do to win, yeah.

From eurosport.yahoo.com:

French Open - Ivanovic through as Kuznetsova wilts

French Open - Serb Ana Ivanovic (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/te/profile/3196.html) won through to her first Grand Slam semi-final with a 6-0 3-6 6-1 victory over third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

The seventh-ranked Ivanovic dominated the first set against the 2004 US Open champion, opening up with a break to 15 and confirming with an easy hold.
She then booked a second double break point after Kuznetsova slammed a backhand into the top of the net, and confirmed on the second pressing the Russian into another error.
Kuznetsova then recovered a bit booking her own chance to break, but the Serbian teenager claimed an easy smash at the net after pushing her opponent along the baseline to save and then held with an ace and an unreturnable serve to go up 4-0.
The Russian gave away a third double-break point going long on an overhead smash and then hitting the forehand error into the net, and Ivanovic confirmed on the first try this time as the third seed committed a third straight error.
Ivanovic claimed the bagel in the opener on the first of three set points ripping a backhand winner down the line as Kuznetsova stared on.
The hot-blooded Russian hit ten unforced errors in a first set that last just 22 minutes, while the Serbian hit ten winners in a brutally efficient opener.
"Everything was happening really fast and I didn't have time to think much," Ivanovic said after the match. "Obviously I was really surprised with the first set."
Kuznetsova's struggles continued in the opening game of the second set as she surrendered two game points to Ivanovic, who ripped consecutive backhand winners down the line past the 21-year-old's forehand.
The world number three ultimately held to claim her first game of the match, but it was an unpromising start to the second set.
Kuznetsova was visibly agitated in dropping the second game of the set, which the 19-year-old closed out with her second and third aces.
She then regained a bit of her composure with a hold to love, though Ivanovic did not make it easy for the Russian playing some excellent defensive points.
Ivanovic opened up the fourth game with her first double-fault and then went wide with the forehand error as the tide seemed to be turning against the Serbian.
Kuznetsova ripped a gorgeous forehand winner past Ivanovic's backhand to earn a triple break point and ultimately needed all three with the Serbian handing her the break to 30 with the game's second double-fault.
But the Russian lost her cool again after dropping the first point on her serve allowing Ivanovic to book her own triple break point.
Though Kuznetsova ultimately saved all three, she handed Ivanovic two more before ultimately gifting her the break back sending a forehand error just wide.
But Ivanovic continued her own struggles to hold serve, giving away another break with back-to-back unforced forehand errors to drop to 2-4 in the second.
Kuznetsova finally settled down with her own hold to 15 forcing the Serbian to serve in order to stay in the second set.
Ivanovic responded with a love-service game, forcing the Russian to serve out for the set.
After dropping behind in the opening service game of the third, Ivanovic ultimately held to 30 with a pair of winners at the net and her sixth ace.
The youngster had seemed to lost some of her never contesting some close line calls and failing to see them overturned as Kuznetsova easily held to love in her opening service game.
But she rediscovered her form from then on holding to 15 despite dropping the first point in the third game.
Ivanovic then earned the critical break, pressing the Russian into going long with the forehand thanks to some excellent defensive groundstrokes to go up 3-1.
The Serbian teenager easily confirmed the break with a hold to love and then rushed ahead 30-0 on Kuznetsova's next serve ripping another gorgeous backhand winner down the line before earning a second break to 15 to take an imposing 5-1 lead.
Serving for the win, Ivanovic pushed the Russian into handing her a triple match point and let out a squeal of delight as Kuznetsova's forehand flew long to hand the Serbian her first-ever berth in a grand slam semi-final.
Ivanovic will face another Russian in the next round, meeting either second seed Maria Sharapova (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/te/profile/1500000000003013.html) or ninth seed Anna Chakvetadze (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/te/profile/3158.html).

Ana's interview after today's win:

Day 10 - An interview with Ana Ivanovic - Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Q. You played a very good match, but there were some ragged moments both with Svetlana and yourself. Was it a good preparation for a semi?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, sure it was. It was a very tough match. Everything was happening quite fast. First set was, I would say, a little bit strange. I played some really good tennis. I was aggressive. And, I guess, she was a little bit nervous.
But in the second set, still I had some chances. I broke her back, and on 3-2, I was serving, and I just lost a little bit tension in my serve and my strokes. So she used that opportunity very well.
But I was really happy that from the beginning of the third, I could pull back and start being more aggressive again, and put pressure on her. And, yeah, I used the opportunities I had.

Q. Did you feel coming into the tournament that you could go this far? Did you have a good feeling about it this week?
ANA IVANOVIC: To be honest, I didn't think much about it. I just was really enjoying my game. And I felt fit, and I felt ready to compete against the top players. I'm really excited to get so far, and tournament is still not over. I am going to try and play my best each match I have.

Q. You're working here with have a Sven Groenefeld, what can you say about him?
ANA IVANOVIC: He's a great coach, and he's been really helpful. He was with me also in Berlin and here. And I can learn a lot from him. He was on the tour for a very long time, and he's very experienced. So it's been great to have such a coach on my side.
And obviously it's tough when I play against side of this player, because he can't interfere, and he can't talk to me about matches. But still there is a few opponents that we can talk about and discuss. And we worked a lot on my serve, and I can see improvement in that. So it's very exciting.

Q. In the first set, did you play the best tennis you have ever played?
ANA IVANOVIC: Everything was happening very fast, so I didn't think much about it. I just tried to move forward and be aggressive, and stay low. And I didn't make -- I hadn't made any errors, so I would say I was pretty good.

Q. Back to Sven. So you hope Sharapova will win?
ANA IVANOVIC: Oh, well, maybe it will be easier so he can advise me. But it's still, no matter against who I play, I'm going to try to play the best I can. And I had so many matches behind me now that I just want to go out there and enjoy it.
And, I mean, it was great two weeks for me, and I feel I improved a lot. And also I got some experience. So no matter against who I play, I'm going to try and play the best.

Q. Players always like to think just one match ahead. But is it impossible not to think about an Ivanovic/Jankovic final?
ANA IVANOVIC: That would be very exciting. We never had. That didn't ever happen before, so I would be very happy if that happens. But as you said, it is important to take it match by match. And then, obviously, there is a lot of emotions involved. And it's very important for me that I keep that aside, playing semifinal, just to think more technically what I have to do in order to win.
And, as I said, I play a lot of matches lately, so that's going to help me a lot.

Q. Is the foot injury you had in the Berlin final, is that completely gone?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I still feel it a little bit, time to time, also the other day after a tough match. But I do a lot of recovery and a lot of treatments. And it's getting better. I still wear braces just for protection until I get my full strength back.

Q. But it's not affecting your movement?
ANA IVANOVIC: No, no, no.

Q. You reached quarterfinals here a couple of years ago. How do you think you've improved as a player to make that jump to the semis over the past couple of years?
ANA IVANOVIC: Two years ago when I reached quarterfinal that was my first year on the tour. Since then, I think I improved a lot on my game. And my fitness, a big difference. And also, a lot of experience because I played so many matches since then. Also, I'm playing on Center Court. It helps a lot because those are all situations you will have to deal with when you have to play further in the tournament. But that experience helped me a lot and made me more calm today.

Q. How much time do you spend between the tournaments in Switzerland nowadays?
ANA IVANOVIC: Very little. It's very hard because I travel so much. And also, I went to Barcelona to practice, so I haven't really been to Switzerland for a very long time now.

Q. Kind of a magic moment. Why Serbia, why now? Is it a supernatural thing, what's going on?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, it's very exciting to see all of us doing so well. Especially we are all very young, so we all have many years in front of us and many possibilities. So it's very exciting, and I'm sure people back home are very proud of us, and that makes us feel very good.

Q. Do you talk with Novak much?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, we speak and we catch up. It's nice to see, because I've known him for a very long time, so it's nice to catch up.
As I said, as I mentioned before, I can learn also from watching him play, because men's game is different than women's, so I can learn watching him. And he is a great player. He can achieve a lot.

Q. Can you speak as freely with Jelena as you can with Novak, because you're not competing with Novak?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, exactly, it's the same we play, so it's very hard to speak that way with her. But, I mean, we can all learn from each other, and we can all use other's successes and motivation extra for myself. So it's very exciting to see so many of us doing well.

Q. How come you play always so well in Paris? Is there anything special here for you?
ANA IVANOVIC: I like a lot of Paris, and obviously, my first memories I had from the reaching quarters here was an unbelievable experience. And I always like coming back here. And now I feel more comfortable playing on the clay as well. And I feel I improved my movements which helps a lot on the clay, because there is a lot of running, and a lot of, yeah, a lot of running to do.
So it's a great tournament for me, and the crowd, it's always great support. And I'm very excited to be here and to -- I always look forward to coming back here.

Q. Is clay your favorite surface now?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's becoming, yeah. Yeah, sure.

Q. Would you describe your relationship with Jelena? Are you just casual acquaintances? Good friends?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, when we start playing tennis, she was -- she's two years older than me, so we never played many tournaments together back home, and we lived in different parts of the city. So we never practiced with each other. And then she went to America and went to Switzerland. So kind of we had different ways, different roads, so we never really had a chance to practice with each other.
And even now, we both have our own teams and our own things we like to do. And it's a little bit different. And we are both a bit -- we both found our way, and we are both doing well, so that's the most important thing.

Q. Are you looking forward to play Fed Cup with Jelena one day or not?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, I think we have very good chance. We have a good team, and we deserve a place in the world group, and that would be a great step for our country. I would love to play a Fed Cup, and, yeah, play for my country again.

Q. You and Jelena both come in here and you kind of light up the room. You have great humor. You're happy and bubbly. Is this a national characteristic?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, we are happy people. Yeah, people back home, they're very friendly and open. And, yeah, we like to have fun. And that's something, yeah, I guess we are just born like that and we bring that from home.
So it's -- I think it's important to be positive and to have a smile.

Congrats to Ana on making the 2007 French Open semifinals. :) She has the upper hand agaisnt Sharapova because of her bigger serve and the fact that she pummled Maria recently in February in the Tokyo semifinals. Both players will have fresh memories of that match. Advantage Ana.

From RG website:

Henin to face Jankovic, Sharapova .v. Ivanovic

By Matthew Cronin
Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Putting on a clay court clinic, three-time champion Justine Henin schooled Serena Williams 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals on Tuesday. Henin will face a familiar foe in the semis, namely Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who has been attempting to grab the mantle of best clay-courter on the planet this spring and who took down Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova 6-3, 7-5. Maria Sharapova's remarkable run is also continuing, despite her lack of clay court credentials, after she powered past fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-4, but the two-time Grand Slam champion's road will get more difficult when she faces perhaps most formidable Serbian in the draw, powerballer Ana Ivanovic, who thrashed third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.
Henin fell to Serena in the Miami final two and half months ago, but unlike in Florida, the Belgian suffered no lapse in concentration this time around on her beloved Philippe Chatrier Court. She accurately placed her big first serve, rolled her topspin forehands to both sides of the court and mixed up her high-variety backhand. The American, outside of her vaunted serve, was highly inaccurate off the ground, consistently dumping her forehand into the net and unable to control her two handed backhand. Just everything was going wrong,” Serena said. “Usually, I don't hit in the net, like I think I hit so many errors today. I hit in the net a lot. And it was very frustrating. I was just making all the errors and just playing like a maniac.”
There were a couple of occasions where it looked like eight-time Grand Slam champ Williams might claw herself back into the match, but Henin never backed off the ball and dictated during all the important points. “I didn't take my opportunities, and I didn't, do anything that I was supposed to do, like move up and things like that,” Serena said. “I just pretty much stood back and let her take advantage of me. And I feel violated.”
After outlasting Patty Schnyder in a three-set marathon in the fourth round, Sharapova came on court with much more confidence against Chakvetadze and ripped at the ball all match long. Her sore shoulder never seemed to bother here and she was able to unleash a number of big serves. Furthermore, she kept her ground strokes deep and to sharp angles and did not let her fleet-footed foe grind her down. “I wouldn't say I'm surprised,” said Sharapova, who reached her fist final four. “I didn't come off the court and go, 'Wow, I'm in the semifinals.' That wasn't really the feeling that I had. I still believed in myself with every round and every situation that I was in. Obviously, when I come to the tournament, I know in any tournament that I play, whether it's on clay or mud or whatever it is, I know what I'm capable of, and I believe in myself, and that's the most important thing. I'm more proud and excited about it.”

Jankovic needed five match points to subdue the big-hitting Vaidisova, but was the quicker and more consistent player on the day. She and Ivanovic set a record on the day, as it is the first time in Grand Slam history that two Serbian women have reached the semi-finals of a major. “ A Serbian power or something, that wherever you go you see just Serbians,” Jankovic said with a laugh. “Wherever you go, it's just Serbians all over the place, winning all these matches. It's just incredible. I'm just proud of that, and hopefully, we can keep going”
Ivanovic wouldn't go into a deep dream about a potential final against Jankovic, but said that it would be special.
“That would be very exciting,” she said. “That didn't ever happen before, so I would be very happy if that happens. It is important to take it match by match. And then, obviously, there are a lot of emotions involved. And it's very important for me that I keep that aside, playing semifinal, just to think more technically what I have to do in order to win.”

didn't see the match but only little tid bits as they were showing the other match and what I saw I liked. She is so much better than just few months ago, better movement, much better serve , calm attitude, a killer forehand and a nice spin backhand too. She is playing much better than Sharapova whom she should beat comfortably but of course she should be prepared for theatrics from the other side and her own stumble. This is a big milestone for her , congrats to her but the good part starts here and she has to finnish it :bounce:

Great win for Ana. :clap2: Other than the 2nd set, she played marvelously today. I`m very proud of her for making her first Grand Slam semifinals. Now i get the matchup i`ve been wanting to see since the draw was releaed between Ana and Maria. I`m very torn since i love both of those ladies. All i have to say that i really hope we get a nicely played classic match on Thursday.

Hope Ana will win it! But I'm so much afraid that it will be ona of Ana's match where she doesn't have her day.
Everytime Russin Sport TV shows Ana's matches against russians at GS Ana plays her worst. It happened at RG-06 against Myskina and at AO-07 against Zvonareva. It's time to chage a tradition Ana! Play your best and win it!http://www.wtatour.ru/style_emoticons/default/clapping.gif

Yeah Ana! She have done it!!! Her perfomance was brilliant especially in the first set! Fantastic match! Go Ana! Don't stop! Ajde!!!:bounce:

Absolutely stunning performance today. :worship: This was pretty much the first game I’ve seen of hers from start to finish since the debacle that was the Australian Open. I attended her games at the Aus Open and I cannot believe the improvement in her game.

Her movement has improved out of sight and it is no longer a liability. She moves around the court quite well and it allows her to stay in the rallies for much longer. She has added variety in her game; she now mixes it up and throws in a few slices to cause a few problems for her opponent.

Her serve is back to its best. She served 5 aces today and won a ton of free points because of it. Perhaps the biggest query I had about her game was her shot selection, well it is not a problem anymore. She is playing smart, smart tennis and no longer does she try to hit winners from every ball and attempt winners from bad positions. She is setting up points well, and she waits for the court to open up. She doesn’t jump the gun anymore; she is patient and is making the right decisions.

I cannot believe the improvement in her game, I really can’t. This girl has the potential to be anything, and I couldn’t be happier!

Keep it going Ana! :yeah:

Congrats to Ana on making her frist grand slam final. :D I thought she would hammer Maria on the red clay of Roland Garros and she did. :smash: Now she needs to win the final and her first grand slam singles title. :)

Ana has a better serve and forehand than Maria does and she's more comfortable on clay than Maria is and all of this showed up in todays match.
