Al-Qaeda ‘planning big British attack’

Dipesh Gadher
AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first “large-scale” terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.

Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on “a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki” in an attempt to “shake the Roman throne”, a reference to the West.

Another plot could be timed to coincide with Tony Blair stepping down as prime minister, an event described by Al-Qaeda planners as a “change in the head of the company”.

The report, produced earlier this month and seen by The Sunday Times, appears to provide evidence that Al-Qaeda is active in Iran and has ambitions far beyond the improvised attacks it has been waging against British and American soldiers in Iraq.

There is no evidence of a formal relationship between Al-Qaeda, a Sunni group, and the Shi’ite regime of President Mah-moud Ahmadinejad, but experts suggest that Iran’s leaders may be turning a blind eye to the terrorist organisation’s activities.

The intelligence report also makes it clear that senior Al-Qaeda figures in the region have been in recent contact with operatives in Britain.

It follows revelations last year that up to 150 Britons had travelled to Iraq to fight as part of Al-Qaeda’s “foreign legion”. A number are thought to have returned to the UK, after receiving terrorist training, to form sleeper cells.

The report was compiled by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) - based at MI5’s London headquarters - and provides a quarterly review of the international terror threat to Britain. It draws a distinction between Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda’s core leadership, who are thought to be hiding on the Afghan-Pakistan border, and affiliated organisations elsewhere.

The document states: “While networks linked to AQ [Al-Qaeda] Core pose the greatest threat to the UK, the intelligence during this quarter has highlighted the potential threat from other areas, particularly AQI [Al-Qaeda in Iraq].”

The report continues: “Recent reporting has described AQI’s Kurdish network in Iran planning what we believe may be a large-scale attack against a western target.

“A member of this network is reportedly involved in an operation which he believes requires AQ Core authorisation. He claims the operation will be on ‘a par with Hiroshima and Naga-saki’ and will ‘shake the Roman throne’. We assess that this operation is most likely to be a large-scale, mass casualty attack against the West.”

The report says there is “no indication” this attack would specifically target Britain, “although we are aware that AQI . . . networks are active in the UK”.

Analysts believe the reference to Hiroshima and Naga-saki, where more than 200,000 people died in nuclear attacks on Japan at the end of the second world war, is unlikely to be a literal boast.

“It could be just a reference to a huge explosion,” said a counter-terrorist source. “They [Al-Qaeda] have got to do something soon that is radical otherwise they start losing credibility.”

Despite aspiring to a nuclear capability, Al-Qaeda is not thought to have acquired weapons grade material. However, several plots involving “dirty bombs” - conventional explosive devices surrounded by radioactive material - have been foiled.

Last year Al-Qaeda’s leader in Iraq called on nuclear scientists to apply their knowledge of biological and radiological weapons to “the field of jihad”.

Details of a separate plot to attack Britain, “ideally” before Blair steps down this summer, were contained in a letter written by Abdul al-Hadi al-Iraqi, an Iraqi Kurd and senior Al-Qaeda commander.

According to the JTAC document, Hadi “stressed the need to take care to ensure that the attack was successful and on a large scale”. The plan was to be relayed to an Iran-based Al-Qaeda facilitator.

The Home Office declined to comment.

You are such a moron. They were planning this before Iraq. Questions: did 9/11 occur before or after Iraq? Did Al Qaeda exist before Iraq?

Anyway, no use arguing with idiots like you. I'm just glad most westerners are still sane and will stand up for shit like this.

Al Queda is a myth.
It is a Trilateral Commission, Bechtel,
Oil Cartel, Right Wing Fundamentalist,
Texas Mafia conspiracy.

Nothing to worry about England.

Gordon Brown is going to fix England and
make nice with the poor, downtrodden,
misunderstood Muslims of the UK and the
world....

Tony Blair and that crazy bunch of English
intelligence figures made this little doozy up.
Bush added some details for effect. That's all.

As soon as the USA leaves Iraq, all will be fine.

Really.

Anyway...they are a gigantic new mosque
ready to open for the Olympics, right next to
the new stadiums. Do you think the crazy Muslim
fascist fanatics would blow up a mosque with
Muslims in it? Not like they ever do things like
that in Iraq or Indonesia or Pakistan or anywhere
else...nah.

If this were to happen what would Britain's response be? Do you think actual nuclear weapons would be used in a response if such a large scale terrorist attack took place? What woud happen to the Muslim and Arab population in Europe, would they be under attack, would the government protect them?

I have to agree with Samsung on al queda being mythical. The group has been broken up and many radical islamist groups who existed for a long time have adopted al queda as their new brand name like in Algeria who went from being called GIA to al queda in Algeria. I tend to be more realistic and refer to 'al queda' as islamist groups.

not that I believe the article or that the terrorists have the capability to launch a Hiroshima scale attack, and of course, like an expert said it could only be a reference to a huge explosion or massive casualties alla 9/11.

But just for the sake of it, supposing the terrorists did get their hands in a nuclear device and detonated it in Britain or the US.

Things would really get ugly at that point.

If they even suspect that Iran is involved or has supplied the weapons, they would launch a massive nuclear strike on Iran. It's known for a while what the US's nuclear deterrence doctrine is, if they, or its allies are attacked with nuclear weapons, the response will not be proportional but 100 times worse, the idea is, if anybody dares to do that, they will be completely destroyed.

Britain itself has the capability to launch a crushing attack on its own, but the Americans would likely be involved, at least providing information (e.g. satellites).

In any case, the situation in Pakistan would deteriorate rapidly. Most of the terrorists caught in the UK seemed to have pakistani links and considering that it's believed that top al quaeda leaders hide between Pakistan and Afghanistan, I think a sophocating pressure would be put on Pakistan to really crack down the area, and if they fail to act, the use of tactican nuclear weapons to clean up the mountains would be a real possibility.

In other words, if the terrorists use nuclear weapons they will open a floodgate, they will remove any argument againt restrain. Goverments that now support them or at least don't fight them hard enough will be facing the real posibility of aniquilation, I think it would be a step too far even for al qaeda.

BTW, it's thought that Al Zawahri has deauthorized attacks in very large scale in the past, he is a murderer but not stupid and knows there is a line they can't cross. The only reason they are not crushed is because it would cause the death of too many civilians, if any moral restrain is eliminated then they have no chance. The clash of civilizations would end before even starting and he knows that, he knows his prayers won't protect them against nuclear missiles.

And regarding the muslim population in Europe or North America, it would not be fair but certain a massive backlash would emerge, I think extreme measure would be taken including mass arrests and deportations and banning them from entering the countries.

Just imagine that Bush would do if he had no restrains at all, the democrats could not oppose action on the risk of being swept away. If they do something like that before British elections, don't be surprised to see a Churchill style leader emerge and put the country in state of war.
