People don't seem to understand that it's only temporary:rolleyes:

Every year wimbledon comes round and people complain that the rain ruins it and there should be a retractable roof...well now they're doing one, everyone complains "It's not the same" "I like the old one"

There will be a roof...it just doesn't come overnight.

and the last couple of years at least it has rained less at Wimbledon that it has during Roland Garros and the U S Open too! :p

Thanks for the pics anyway spiceboy! :) Good news there are more seats but it looks like it bears quite a resemblance to the 'new' No. 1 Court. I hope the special Centre Court atmosphere hasn't been lost; I guess we won't know until the roof is put on..... :scared:

I read that they're going to build a retractable roof like the stadium at the AO. I'm totally against that (part of the fun of Wimbie are the rain delays). But, nothing to be done about it.

Yes: the roof should have gone on 20 years ago, there should also be one on No. 1 Court. It's pathetic that a world-wide sporting event, grossing millions get's rained off. The stands looks bigger with the roof off: I'd like to see the capacity raised up to 16,000.

Well, it's only going to be 'indoor' tennis when it's raining, so tennis can still continue on at least one court while it's raining :)

Isnt it being "partially" built from now until 2009, or are they going to start building after the 2008 tourney? I know its temporary, but I'd love it if the seats down at the bottom stayed there for spectators, it would be so cool.

Im really not sure. I guess it is being partially built, but they havent got round to it :p

how's that possible if they're partially building it leading up to 2009? are people just gonna be attending the 2008 championship with partially missing roof tops over their head while pieces of construction falling on ur head while ur watching a championship match at the world's most prestigious tournament?

i think it looks cool, it will be a nice change to have no roof and at least its only for a couple of years then we'll have a roof.

the only bad thing will for people sitting up the back who will get soaked by the rain, when they were protected in years gone by.

It will be an interesting year at Wimbledon! For some reason, I think it actually looks smaller without the roof. Oh well, the change is only for this year. When the project is done, it should look more or less the same as it always has looked. For the 2008 championships, the roof will be back, and for 2009, the roof will be operational. I can't wait to see the new roof!

Yeah that was weired especially last year Wimbledon was actually hotter than the USO so the grass was dying alot sooner and the court slowed down alot too....... when are they going to finish the roof and for this year are they just going to cover the court with a tarp thingy and thats it?

Remember, this change is only temporary. By 2009, a new retractable roof will be in place over Centre Court, and it will look very similar to what was there before.

Errr....it has always had a roof. So do you want it to "stay as it is" or do you want it like it is right now with "no roof at all". Make up your mind, you can't have both.

Actually it doesn't matter what you want. They are building new roof which will be retractable to keep the rain out. Hope when it is complete you will like it.

In the meantime it will make for a change to have Wimbledon centre without a roof for this one lone year.

I imagine it would look alot different on the court than these photos suggest. These pics make it look alot flatter, if that makes sense. The stadium itself looks smaller and it looks like the seating doesn't go as high. But it's obviously a work in progress, nice to see some evidence of the reconstruction. :D

Indeed and this year we are apparently in for another scorcher of a summer, so no doubt everyone will be complaining that it's too hot and why are they building a retractable roof when it never rains in London, but we need cover from the relentless English sun

It looks bigger than it did before for 2 reasons

With the old roof on, you didn't really get a feel for how far back the seating actually went - it gave it the illusion of being smaller than it actually was.

They've added during this building process a couple of extra rows of seating so it actually is bigger than it was too.

But of these combine to make it look much bigger.

By next year's championships they will have the fixed parts of the roof in place and it will look much more like it used to do. Which is good because it currently does look a little weird - and characterless.

By 2009 they will have added the sliding roof mechanism and that will be operational.

Also by 2009 they will have built a new Court 2.

There are also plans afoot to build a new Court 3 on the site of the current Court 2 and realign all the outside court areas to provide wider walkways between them, etc.

And of course Hawkeye from this year on!

So lots going on in the next couple of years at Wimbledon!

Heh. Call me retarded but I'm confused...

I know that Centre Court had those big rising walls (roofs I guess you could call them) on the sides of it that maybe covered some of the stands, but the court itself was never covered by any kind of roof, was it? I mean that's why they're building a roof, isn't it? So how are they going to have more washouts now than they did in years past if the court was never covered? I'm confused, but maybe it's my bad interpretation...

Okay, so the court has never been covered by anything in the past and won't be until 2009... so how are there going to be "more washouts this year"? There can't be any more than in years past if the court's roofing situation hasn't changed.

yes, they have done loads of test as they don't want condensation to seap through on a grass court
