What I saw from at Miami, Chan certainly has game to annoy top players.

I hope Serena is ok but really with green clay being so slippery and her history with injuries, she should tone it down to only red clay.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Hope all is alright baby girl, but I sooooooo wanted Venus to beat your big arsed booty all the way back home!!

It would have done wonders for her confidence, I'm sure...........

You don't want to play on clay with an injured hammstring. There is to much sliding involved. I think Venus is used to it by now, but for Serena it is still new (for this season). I hope she rests it up so that she could play the Slams. She may have the same injury as Roddick, so hopefully it's not serious for the both of them.

Now this is Ironic!!! I can't believe you said that! Am I reading this right?
Yes, you're reading it right, and that's a very real possibility. I had never heard of a professional tennis player doing two-a-days during a tournament before. I don't know if Serena worked out at all between Melbourne and Miami, but it just struck me as odd that she would do something players would normally do during the winter, if at all.

I think Venus should be dissapointed. She won their last two matches and I think would have been ready to take on the In-Form Serena and prove hereself. I hope she was injured and not just pulling out when she was down. When doing my picks I really wanted to pick Venus but went with Serena, silly me!

Is Serena's upper thigh usually wrapped? I never noticed that before.

p.s. I told y'all several times (no one believed me) that I did not expect ANY of the big contenders to play Charleston. I'm not surprised that Serena decided to retire if she had even the smallest discomfort going on. Better to rest up the body for the red courts of the European spring season. She has her eye firmly on The French Open!

Venus can now have some more time to develop her game comeback without having to put a lot of strain on her body having to play Serena...

Groin injury forces Serena to withdraw

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Serena Williams retired from her match at the Family Circle Cup against Chan Yung-Jan on Tuesday with a groin pull.

Chan, of Chinese Taipei, was up 5-3 in the first set when Williams withdrew, apologizing to the crowd before she left stadium court.

Williams, the third seed, said she strained the muscle in Monday's practice and a trainer said it didn't seem like it would affect her play in future tournaments.

"But it could potentially get worse if I don't take care of it," Williams added.

Williams, who played Tuesday with her right thigh wrapped, said she will treat her injury with ice and massage.

"I've been playing a lot on the clay and, like I said, I was just sliding a lot and I think I just slid too far," she said.

Earlier, Williams' sister easily advanced, defeating Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-2.

This wasn't surprising. Charleston must feel like they have the biggest joke of a tournament the last few years. In 2004, top players withdrew before their first matches and the field got depleted such as Justine, the defending champ, and Serena, the most popular player on tour at the time and defending finalist. Luckily Venus won the tournament and brought fans to come to the later rounds. 2005 wasn't a terrible year in that Justine was on the come-back trail and won the tournament, but also because Lindsay Davenport played and gave Justine a heck of a match in the quarterfinals. In 2006, the only top player to even bother playing was Justine and she was beaten, only for an exciting match-up between Nadia and Patty in the finals. I think that Tokyo, Charleston, Moscow, and Canada are the biggest jokes for Tier 1's alive.

Can somebody post the interviews of Y-Jang Chan and Serena Williams please? I can't open the pdf file because my computer has gone bonkers.

DANNY KENDALL: Yung-Jan goes
by the Western name of Latisha.
That's her name that she uses.
It's easier for everyone to
use. So we'll take questions.

Q. A little surprised
out there tonight the way
things were?

YUNG-JAN CHAN: Yeah. I was
pretty surprised because I
think she's a great player, and
already like I want to play
like three sets with her and
hopefully I can win, and I was
surprised she was retired.

Q. Could you tell she
was hurting?

YUNG-JAN CHAN: I thought she
just like she didn't warm up
yet and she didn't feel good
with her forehand, backhand,
but I wasn't know that she got
any pain or something.

Q. Your play was pretty
impressive. You were playing
very well out there. Even
though she may have been hurt,
your strokes were on tonight.
Do you have a lot of confidence
you can go far in this
tournament?

YUNG-JAN CHAN: Yeah. I feel
better because last few weeks I
didn't do it very good like for
my singles, so I mean it is a
good start for me and hopefully
I can do well here.

DANNY KENDALL: Any more
questions? Thank you very
much.

----

AMY BINDER: Questions
for Serena, please.

Q. Serena, it looked
like it was a battle right from
the beginning for you there.
How has that been?

SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, in
practice yesterday I was
sliding. I was working on some
sliding, and I think I must
have just strained it a little
bit, and I took the rest of the
day off and today all day, and
I was just hoping it would get
better.

Q. What is the injury,
Serena? Is it your hamstring?

SERENA WILLIAMS: No. It's my
groin. I think I just have a
slight strain on it, or I don't
know the exact diagnosis. I
have to go see, but somewhere
in that neighborhood. It's
something like that.

Q. Do you expect that's
going to affect you for the Fed
Cup?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I haven't
even thought that far right
now. I'm just -- you know, Fed
Cup is on hard court, so I
don't think it should affect
me. I hope it doesn't. I
really didn't want it to affect
this tournament, as I had goals
to reach. So you know, I don't
know.

Q. Did you ever think
of not playing tonight before
the match?

SERENA WILLIAMS: No. I knew
that -- I figured I'd have
tomorrow off. If I could just
get through today, then I would
have all day tomorrow to
recover and then hopefully get
ready for Thursday. So that
wasn't a thought at all.

Q. You seem pretty
shaken up. I mean emotionally,
I know you wanted to be here for this one. I mean is this
really emotional for you to
have to pull out?

SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, it
is. This is one title that I
don't have, and I feel like I
should have it already, and I
feel like, you know, I just --
I really wanted to play this
tournament, and it's a great
draw, and you know, I didn't
want to be the one to miss out
on it. Seemed like this was my
year for this event.

Q. Do you have a sense
of how serious it is? I mean
can you feel or --

SERENA WILLIAMS: I have no
idea. I was talking to the
trainer, and she said it
doesn't seem like it's a
tournament -- like it shouldn't
affect me a couple of weeks
down the road, but it could
potentially get worse if I
didn't take care of it.

Q. And you would have
to then just stay off it?

SERENA WILLIAMS: A lot of ice,
which I hate, and stim., and a
lot of massage just to keep the
tissues good, I guess.

Q. Does this just stem
from clay court?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I think so.
I've been playing a lot on the
clay, and like I said, I was
just sliding a lot, and I think
I just slid too far. Maybe I
wasn't warmed up enough, even
though I was, and I don't know.
It's just -- you see a lot of taped legs on clay courts.

Q. With all this
tournament, in the last ten
days I know you players were
strictly focused on your
opponent, but a lot of players
have pulled out or withdrawn
because of injury. Did that
enter into your mind at all as
you were leaving the court?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, it did,
and I didn't want to be one of
those, and that's what I
thought, if I could just get
through today, then I'd have
tomorrow off, and plus it would
help my ranking going into the
spring in the other clay court
tournaments, so yeah.

Q. We don't often get
to see players apologize for
the fans. Why did you do that
tonight?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, I have
a great advisor on the WTA Tour
who suggested it, and it was
definitely a good idea because
they should hear from me that,
you know, I really wanted to be
out there more than anything,
and I don't know what to say.
It was really disappointing.

Q. Has the trainer
given you any indication of
what the recovery period will
be?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I'm going to
find all that out right now.
Thank you guys.

Serena withdraws from match; Venus rolls on

Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=2832362

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Serena Williams retired from her match at the Family Circle Cup against Chan Yung-Jan on Tuesday with a groin pull.

Venus Williams, ranked No. 29, needed just over an hour to defeat the Australian on a chilly day.

"I feel really good," said Venus Williams, playing in her fourth tournament after being sidelined earlier this year with a wrist injury. "I don't think of myself as an underdog. I just think of myself not being as highly ranked as I should be and that happens when you take time off."

A few hours before Serena Williams' withdrawal, top-seeded Nicole Vaidisova fell to unseeded Michaella Krajicek 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 -- the first time in tournament history a top seed was bounced in her first match.

It was also only the second time in her career that Vaidisova, ranked No. 8 in the world, entered a tour event as a top seed. Again, as at Memphis last year, she was eliminated in her first match.

"I didn't feel in any part of the match I played well," said Vaidisova, of the Czech Republic. "I wasn't really hung up on the fact I was the No. 1 seed, but of course I'm disappointed."

"It's a great win," said Krajicek, of the Netherlands. "I was looking forward to a win like this, and especially when you beat the first seed."

Krajicek, sister of 1996 Wimbledon men's champion Richard Krajicek, is ranked 54th.

Vaidisova's loss leaves No. 9 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, the second seed, as the highest-ranked player remaining at the Family Circle, which is now in its 36th season.

Tatiana Golovin of France, who won her first tour title last week at Amelia Island, won 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Golovin, now ranked No. 19, is seeded 10th.

"I've never really played back-to-back tournaments after winning one," said Golovin, who added she has not had time to savor last week's win. She said she felt confident, but struggled because she was tired.

"You know what you can do and I'm playing well," said Golovin, who was treated for a blister on her toe during the match. "It's just a matter of how I'm going to be able to hold up physically."

In other matches, Francesca Schiavone of Italy advanced 6-2, 2-0 when Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain retired with a back injury.

Virginie Razzano of France defeated Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States 6-3, 6-4; Katrinia Srebotnik of Slovakia defeated Julia Vakuleno of the Ukraine 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 and Gisela Dulko of Argentina beat Julia Schruff of Germany 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Sybille Bammer of Austria defeated Alicia Molik of Australia, 6-3, 6-1; Mara Santangelo of Italy beat Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 7-5, 6-1; Elen Daniilidou of Greece defeated Romina Oprandi of Italy 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain defeated Martina Muller of Germany, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

I think it was her trainer who allegedly said that.
I don't buy it for a second.
As you said, no one does that during a tournament - much less on a hard court, even less a player who, four years after knee surgery, still needs killer anti-inflams just to get on the court without pain and hadn't even played in two months.
Just another fictional situation, for whatever reason.

i suspect Serena's heart wasn't really in this tournament anyway. not saying she faked an injury but i wouldn't be surprised if this is more precautionary than anything else.

:haha: about this name and all the responses about it. "Latisha" is indeed a Black girl name in the USA. But "Leticia" is also a French name pronounced "Le-tee-see-a". Who knows how YJC came up with this name, but I find it hilarious.

Like most non Williams fans I think this injury is fake. I think Serena retired for two possible reasons.
1. Doesn't want to play her sister.
2. Not enough time to recover from her Miami run.
Most likely a combination of both. I still am willing to bet all my v-money, that Serena would have played without incident the whole tournament if Venus was on the other half.

This is fishy to me, isnt it convinient that she "pulls out" with a hamstring injury.,..with venus looming in the third round?

I had a feeling she would do this. Its unfortunet, she probably is a bit sore there but i highly doubt its serious.

I guess we will never know the answer too if venus was on the other side of the draw. poeple need to stop it Serena Knows whats best for her body and If I rember right this is the place where she got hurt and then was out of shape for a very long time good on her for not playing at this green clay joke I for one never want her to play on this stuff ever again

I was at the match. The injury was real.

What is questionable is why she didn't withdraw before the match, because it was obvious from the start that she was not taking it seriously. I was  at how lackadaisacal she was playing, until I understood what was going on. IMO, she knew she was going to retire, and was just going to play a few games to make a show of it for the crowd first. There must be a reason for this choice of retirement over withdrawal, probably related to her contract with the tournament or the tour.

Well if the injury is for real its better she retired rather than playing on, aggravating the injury and getting laid off the season longer than what should have. She should have just withdrawn in the first place, I guess there is some pressure on her to stop withdrawing, but seeing that the top 7 or so players withdrew she should have withdrew for her health's sake.

Withdraw early and have every fortune teller imply that she was somehow dodging her sister, or that both her and Venus flipped a coin and she lost this time and had to pull out. Serena played at the US Open with Venus on her side, Miami with Vee on her side two times. The only exception is IW's and that was years ago and people are swooping in here accusing her of faking God only knows what would of been said if she just withdrew early.

Serena injury ends showdown hopes

Serena acknowledges the crowd after pulling out
Hopes of a clash between Venus and Serena Williams in the Family Circle Cup ended when an injury forced Serena to pull out of her second-round match.
The Australian Open champion was trailing 5-3 to Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan when a groin injury ended her chances.

"I've been playing a lot on the clay. I was just sliding a lot and I think I just slid too far," she said.

Earlier, Venus, who won the tournament in 2004, beat Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-2 in their first-round match.

The pair had been on course to meet in the third round, which would have been their first encounter since the 2005 US Open.

Serena had a first-round bye, while Venus now faces Russian teenager Vasilisa Bardina in round two.

 this sucks
