Its too soon to say if Venis is "back on task." Instead I say enjoy this win and gain CONFIDENCE from it. Unfortunately, Venus has to play Serena. However, I've always thought that Serena was vulnerable to Venus because they're sisters. Probably the only emotional weak spot that Serena has. Still, IF Serena comes with a take no prisoners but do take sisters attitude, my money is on Serena.

I feel sorry for Stosur...
to lose to the eventual champion twice in a row...

and for serena
They said that the best way to get Serena is in the early matches..
where she is more vulnerable than in latter rounds...

Venus wont have any rest...
her 2nd round match is tomorrow...
and Serena for her thursday match...

that's why venus is able to beat serena even when seren is playing her best. if these two players had no emotional ties to each other. their h2h would be something like 10-4 in favor of serena. venus fans think that venus has the hard time emotionally but i think serena has a harder time just playing her game than venus does. that's why venus scares me for serena.

I hope not; I would love that result if Venus wins the tournament. Last time in Miami, Venus took out Serena, only to lose in the next round to Maria S (I believe it was 2004 or 2005).

its like how pete sampras was slumping and would lose to everybody but when he played agassi he would all the sudden find his game and be great opponent again. same w/venus think its easier for her to beat serena than it would be to win the title. think the opposite for serena, it's easier for her to win the title, proabably the hardest part will be beating venus.

I don't think Venus would be 4-10 against Serena if there was no emotional tie. Lets not forget how Venus would play awesome in the semi-finals leading up to the "Serena slam" only to put in a punk performance in the final [maybe except the Australian Open].

Not a bad scoreline against a top player either! Some of you guys have to stop acting like there is no chance she can win this title. It's Venus Williams she can win on every surface which includes clay. Remember she has even won this same title in 04. Don't write her off yet...

I strongly disagree. I´m a fan of both sisters with Venus being my first fave and Serena the second. However I know that Serena is overall the better player but Venus on top form is not far behind. So to say that their h2h would be 10-4 for Serena is not realistic. Both have to deal with the emotional toll that comes when they play each other. I have to say that Serena has handled that the best in the important occasions (five slam finals) so Venus seems to have the hardest time with it emotionally but they have to find a way to deal with it, so far Serena has dealt with it the best.
So if they meet in the third round it will be equal in the emotional department the one that handles her emotions the best will play better and win. Serena btw is playing better and should win unless Venus has a very good day.

I have to disagree with this Serena likes to beat people at all cost, including Venus. Serena used to literally cry on the court during some of losses to Venus because she wanted to beat Venus so bad, but was denied by big sis. Serena's losses to Venus had nothing to do with emotions. How could Serena go 10-4 against Venus when Venus was better than her prior to 02???

4-10????

Try 7-7

I know. But read the thread through and it'll make sense. I was just talking hypothetically [?], because "tennisjunky" said that 10-4 will be the head to head between Serena and Venus if they werent Sisters and hence no emotional tie.

I totally disagree.

Serena emotionally had trouble with Venus
when they were younger. Yet, once Serena
got that 1st Slam over Venus, it became
the opposite.

The proof IMO is, if you take what V&S were saying
from 02'-03' it shows Venus had the emotional trouble.

Serena said when asked of their match-up in Slams
that she wanted to win no matter who was on the
other side of the net, including venus.

Venus on the other hand has said, she wants to win
but wants Serena to win too. And IMO, notice the difference
in demeanor for Venus immediately after MP in 02' RG compared
to 02' Wimbledon. Sitting in that chair and the look on Venus'
face said it all.

I think if they weren't sisters, Venus would have won atleast one
of those 5 straight slams she lost to Serena. JMO.

Anyways, happy Venus played well.

Okay, Venus has the weirdest backhand grip ever. Her left hand isn't all the way on the grip. Not to mention, her pointer finger on the right hand is odd too. I was always taught to have both hands completley on the grip and my fingers side-by-side. Maybe she has big hands?

Yeah, it is too open-stance. Look at her backhand from 2000-2003, she closed her stance more often. She had more control, more power, and more spin on the shot when she closed the stance. It wasn't so wristy and hippie. She labors when she hits it now, before it used to be a lot smoother. She hit so many more winners from 2000-2003 on that side.

I'd agree with this.

She's hitting her backhand almost exclusively open-stance nowadays, and to be the shot is a tad more wristy than it was a few years ago.

it was. at 6-5, Lindsay had 15-30 on the Williams serve, but no match point. Venus did hit a huge bh winner on 30-40 at 4-5 in the third in that match. With the way she hit it, one second of timing off, the shot would've flyed on her.

I suppose, but i dont feel its hindered her shot that much at all. she's still got great follow-through and her feet are usually planted well for the actual contact point.

I feel Serena's has become a bit more open stance too. maybe a conscious decsision........

well, Serena's stronger than Venus and isn't as wristy on the shot. Richard wants Venus' shots to be all open-stance. She used to close her stance on both the forehand and backhand some time ago, but apparently it wasn't what he wanted for Venus. He's right on the forehand, wrong on the backhand.
