this is a quick analysis of rankings during the next 4 weeks (until Berlin), starting with safe points at the beginning of this week

8 Jankovic 1882 (playing Charleston, Warsaw, Berlin - no points to defend - will stay Top 10)
9 Petrova 1869 (not playing until Berlin, losing 300 points in Berlin - likely to say goodbye to top 10 after Berlin)
10 Tchakvetadze 1847 (playing Warsaw and Berlin, 2 tournaments in which she is defending 130 points - will likely defend those points and stay Top 10)
11 S Williams 1769 (playing Charleston AND Berlin while not defending any points ... will likely replace Tchakvetadze in Top 10 after Charleston or Petrova after Berlin)

12 Dementieva 1635 (playing Warsaw and Berlin, 2 tournaments in which she is defending 130 points - status is :scared: due to her serious injury)
13 Hantuchova 1616 (only defending 42 points ... looks good to keep climbing)
14 Safina 1592 (she has major points to defend in the clay season in Berlin, Rome and Roland Garros - but has a chance to pad her point total in Charleston and Berlin)
15 Peer 1508 (last year she played the little league and got titles in Prague and Istanbul - she will surely gain points this year playing Tier Is)
16 Ivanovic 1495 (with only 49 points to defend from Warsaw, is surely going to gain points this year)
17 Li 1388 (major points to defend from Estoril and Berlin - about 200 ... needs a good performance in Charleston to take the pressure off)
18 Schnyder 1337 (75 points to defend in Berlin - needs to perform well on clay to stop her ranking freefall)
19 Golovin 1281 (no points to defend AT ALL)

Patty is going to keep on dropping. Looks like rome might be her only saviour having only 3rd round points there to defend.........

Dementieva- lets hope for some good showings in Europe to have chances to get back into the top 10:eek:

Peer is going to be on the up though:bounce:

why is petrova losing 300 points in berlin? is it because you hate her? :P

---

i really like how packed the top 20 is. its been much more packed point wise than it has been in a while... or from whenever i can remember. every person in the top 20 has at least 1000 points and no one below has 1000.

no ... I just don't think she has a high chance of defending those points ... she will be seeded #5-8 in that tournament with the top 4 seeds being Henin, Mauresmo, Kuznetsova and Hingis ... and with the Top 20 as stacked as it is, it will be tough for her to get far in the tournament

Nadia could beat Henin, Mauresmo, Kuznetsova and Hingis :p She beat them all bar Hingis last year and I think she could in Hingis' current form.

I expect Nadia will drop out after Berlin anyway, but like Serena she could gain a lot of points from Roland Garros so hopefully she'll be back in it in no time at all. :D

Petrova is a clay court specialist. I could see her taking out Mauresmo, Kuznetsova, or Hingis in Berlin. And what if Henin isn't healthy?

Things look good for Serena, Anna C and Jankovic!!

But Vaidisova, Hingis, Dementieva, Petrova and Schnyder will lose a lot of points after RG!

hmm..Dementieva only has to defend big points in Warsaw...last year her Berlin showing was rather poor..3rd round..she can easily reach that and more..and then she`s playing Rome (3rd round last year too, I think) and Istanbul-but Istanbul has probably nothing to do with the RG seeding

Lena has to defend

Warsaw SF 88 points
Berlin 1/8 45 points
Rome QF 75 points

but she's coming back from injury:sad:

It's the best it's ever been. Just remember who were the players in the #10-20 range at this time last year: slumping Myskina, Likhovtseva, Pennetta, a Hantuchova who never won more than two matches in a row, prior to that Dechy was there as well...

I don't agree!
players like Myskina and Venus should be in the top 10

I love the Top 20 right now ... any player can make a major move with a good result here or there

Na Li reached the SF of IW and QF of Miami and dropped 2 spots in the rankings  :fiery:

she's having a great year, the down side is next year she will have MAJOR points to defend:pserena has a reasonable schedule that allows her time to rest between tournaments,if she just plays 12 tournaments and she is not injured there is no reason why she shouldnt defend her points and pick up from other tournaments.
serena is going to be a fixture in the top five for the coming years.

Serena deserves it, its so obvious - win AO then Miami, then no points to defend, then play Berlin and Rome and with her current results? Its just simple math.

don't you just love that about the rankings LOL....IMO they are utter crap actually...they tend to be so untrue

HUH? They show your performance in tournaments based on the number of tournaments you played, what's untrue about that? You have to of course think before you read these stats, someone who plays 30 tournaments to get to rank 10 is better than rank 11 who played just 18. Rank 1 who played 20 tournaments is better than Rank 2 who played 18 if the difference is large. But no matter what at the end of the year the no.1 is the no.1 and the best, there are cases when the difference between points at the years end was just 60 points and the tournament difference was just 2, in the case of Kim and Henin, but why didn't Kim play one more tournament to get the no.1 spot? Many reasons, but the stat shows Henin ontop she had the strength will, etc to play those tournaments and win those many titles to get the no.1 ranking.

I wonder why WS fans always degrade the ranking system. Is it because the WS cannot always be at the top of that ranking system even if we all know they can beat almost anybody on the tour if they liked? Well the situation is the WS haven't been playing much and that shows on the rankings. Now for Serena she has been entering tournaments consistently and winning them and so we will see her at the top 10 and if her run continues it will be no surprise for her to reach no.1 again. But to continually bash the ranking system just because the WS are not constantly ontop or in the top 10 doesn't have to mean that the ranking system is untrue, biased, not needed etc. The WS are talented, but they have to play and win tournaments if they want and you want to see their names in the top 10.
