If Martina wants to call herself a tennis legend, she should feel free! Her status in tennis legend is fact. It's nice to know that she doesn't take herself too seriously, even though it would be hard to fault her if she did.

Martina Navratilova is a great role model for anyone, regardless of sexual orientation. She saw something she wanted, and worked hard to get it. Yes, talent must play a part, but she really managed to raise the bar for herself with discipline and dedication. She has an added sensitivity the problem of growing up gay, but even sharing her experiences about that should be a great benefit to everyone, to help us all understand what it's like and how we could make it better.

My other personal picks?

BJK
Chris Evert
Monica Seles
Williams Sisters
Maria Sharapova

Generally speaking, I would not advance athletes as role models for my children. Having said that BJK efforts in gender equality do make her quite a good role model.
