What was with Venus today, first 3 points she played where terrific, then feel to pits and went down 6-2 4-0

THEN, came back to 4-3 with sum great guts, then fell to pits again!!!

What was with her today!? I hope they play again in Charleston because I know Venus will want revenge.

Onto Chalreston, Im looking forward to it because Venus will have to up her game if she is to win the title.

Tati  :D

She played a very smart match overall, and did well to remain composed in the last game after seeing that big lead disappear :yeah:

Venus made too many UEs, especially off the FH, and generally she just seemed a little unsure of herself on court. She showed good fight in the 2nd set, but wasted her opportunity by making 3 horrid errors immediately

I never felt comfortable about Venus winning this match. Venus has to address her errors, but Tati played very well and she as a consistent forehand. I wish Venus would add the slice drop shot to her game. Tati used it on her at least twice. Most of Vee's opponents play so far in the backcourt that a slice drop would keep them guessing, draw them it and then she could go for a passing shot. At least Venus served a little better, but she gave far too many free points away. I refuse to be depressed about this loss, I'm moving on.

Very impressive from Golovin. Off course we all know she only won because of Venus UE or/and her 22 different injuries or whatever.

But I was still impressed.

Error and Error
Sick, Sick of it.

You don't win like that Venus
You need to to something else

What's wrong with you baby??

Please tell me becuase I want to know that
I really want to know if you are going to play as the 5 time Champion and a great tennis player that you are or just be a doll of confidence for other players that you must be beating right now and you're don't.

I'm sorry
I love you but that's what I think
I'm not going to cry anymore for your losses because I'm realizing you're not learning a thing from your losses.

I mean come on, whats up with you Vee?
I don't blame Richard for saying those hard comments about you.

Wake up!!

By the way congratulations Golovin

First of all, congrats to Tati. She played a great match. Her returns of serve were quite something else and she served very well too. ;)

Venus, what can I say  That very first game was awesome with all that agression and moving forward and then it suddenly all fell apart :o Same ol same ol with serve and forehand issues unfortunately and I wasn't even convinced by that mini-second set comeback coz I just knew the confidence wasn't quite there to build on it and carry it through. Still, nudging up the rankings and I guess just need to play as many matches as possible

that's all I can really say...She's gonna have to play Rome or Berlin if she really even wants to make a run at Roland Garros...I'm just so disappointed in this type of match..she talks a big game but she's got a lot of work to do...

Venus just has way too much time on clay and her strokes are technically a mess

Tati could have won 61 60 or something like that if she didnt start to choke being up 40 in the second set. She played a rock-solid match and didnt make too much errors, congrats, Tati :)

Venus on the other hand was awful, she doesnt have a plan B like Serena has, she just keeps thrashing the ball and makes catastrophal errors.

Apr 6th, 2007, 07:26 PM
Well, I like Golovin so I am happy for her but I can't help to feel very frustrated. Venus' game was awful, sometimes she looked drunk on court because her footwork was terrible! :tape:

I don't remember watching her playing so badly ever and where the hell is her backhand? That magnificient shot that used to give her so many victories. In the few rallies backhand to backhand, she didn't do anything and she quickly passed to the forehand side (very wise move  ), where Golovin is clearly more consistent.

Another thing, where is her serve? Although she only made 2 double falts, her 1st serve was completely ineffective (some of them seemed like 2nd serves :help: ).

And by the way, have you forgotten how to use the angles in your shots, she is always playing shots down the line that most of the times go to the middle of the court and that, in clay is even worst.

I don't know what it is happening with you but you really have to work on your game! You need it!

There is no need to be so harsh! And Venus is a top player, how dare you say something like that? I understand your first comment, we are getting used to these disappointing losses but you can´t say Venus is not a top player. 6 months ago no one was saying that Serena would be where she is right now and lots of people said she was not a top player anymore, so be careful, you might have to eat your own words.

good match from tatiana. i think she was just letting venus hit the errors but then she realized toward the end that venus was going to come back, so she got aggressive and it paid off. there were flashes of the old venus though. allez tati!!

Apr 6th, 2007, 07:34 PM
Really not surprising. However, Venus sucked today. I can't believe the wild errors she was making. I just don't understand why she doesn't add more topspin and grind out the rallies when she's making that many errors. Venus moves well and is clearly very fit. She looks fantastic! Venus should have been more patient and worked the ball around rather than continuing to hit flat shots that were flying on her. After a mini comeback, Venus played a very bad game at 3-4 in the second set, which pretty much sealed her fate. Had she won that game, anything could have happened. Everybody has bad days, but I'm disappointed.

That said, I love me some Tati! It's great to see her playing well. She also looks very fit and a few pounds lighter. Tati really needs to win a tournament soon though. She's 19 years old and has been a pro since 2002. Her contemporaries (Ivanovic, Peer, Nicole V.) all have tournaments wins, so it's time for Tati to step up. You can only be a player with "potential" for so long.

Can't wait to see how she does against Ivanovic tomorrow.

Just Do It

Apr 6th, 2007, 07:40 PM
Hey All,

Venus has won several titles on clay. Nothing against Tati and good on her - but she hasn't won any. I mean really! When Venus was winning her titles on clay - someone had to be on the other end losing thruout the tourney up until the final. That is just as it will be @ this tourney.

Tati just happened to beat Venus today. Tati has a very nice game, and I like to watch her play. Venus has a very nice game and I love to watch her play. No one likes to witness a sloppy error filled match by anyone. Venus had 29 errors - so she was the most erratic. And that fact certainly didn't help her cause, but she had won three matches before today's, so she is getting some matches in and getting match tough.

I'm just glad she is still out there trying.

Is it the end of the world because she lost? I think not! Can improve on clay and/or over all? I think so! All players can improve. And she did make the FO final before. Has any of the players at this tourney made the FO final? I thought not.

Some so-called fans sure are fickle. They've been praising Venus for winning three straight matches, after having played on three straight days - but when she is off her game - they want to crucify her and tell her she sucks on clay and can't improve even this year? What???!!! How short some folks' memories are - indeed. All she has to do is improve. There were doubters that declared she nor her sister would make a FO final - and we know what happened there.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/2002/french_open/news/2002/06/04/french_tuesday_ap/

"GET ON THE GOOD FOOT - VENUS" "KEEP FIGHTING AND IMPROVING" "REMEMBER THE FO FINAL - 2002" "YOU CAN DO IT AGAIN - GIRLFRIEND - W/YOUR RICH IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE - SELF"

I'm getting used to the disappointing loses. I'm actually more surprised whens he wins easily (ex. Memphis final).

Anyway, Serena's playing next week and I believe in her soooo much more than Venus. I never worry as much and right now Venus is showing exactly why she isn't a top player.

She had a bad loss, get over it, she'll be FINE!

Now get some revenge against Ivanovic for all the one-sided defeats.

Venus as always was very erratic and paid the price for it.

why are we always judging someone.there is always a winner and non-winner.and today was not venus day.tati kept the ball in play and allowed benus to just self destruct.it happens when venus pressures herself to come up with out right winners.and on clay you have to be patient and wait for your opening.it hurts though to see her out there struggling when she doesnt have to be struggling.i started watching tennis because of them.and i want to say this on the off chance that its read by many and related back to her and her camp.venus confidence is not there.serena went to nick boleteri's and venus needs to do the same.for one she has gone as far as she can with her coaches.there comes a time when you have to say ok i need help.i need outside help.she doesnt listen or cant comprehend that her loses are from stupid errors.these players arent beating her.she is giving it to them.venus you need an outside ear.fresh perspective.yes serena is good but so are you.hell u didnt get 5 grand slams for nothing.and the players that your losing to dont even have or will amass what you have.why are you letting them come in an steal your thunder girl.wake up please wake up.if your coaches truly wished u well they would get the extra help that you need and get you back to the venus ebony star williams that we know and love.its breaking our hearts to see this venus that is out there now.you can get away with that play with the lesser ranked girls.but u should not be allowing these girls to score wins on you in this manner.its one thing if they are blowing u out the water.but your over working yourself making foolish errors and for what.calm down and be patient.work on your serve.first and second.pick your spots and stop over hitting.do not go for the outright winner unless you have that opening.we as fans are tired of the same ole.this was ur tournament girl i felt it in my soul.you went out there and handed it to them.tighten up ur net play.if u cant tighten up ur game against these players.how are u going to go up against the big girls.i miss venus of old.please when u find her tell her that we are ready for her to return and give us and herself the enjoyment of tennis that she used to give us.we enjoy serena progressing.when are u going to step from behind her and become the big shot of old.venus please i beg u to seek the structure in your game that got you to what you amassed so far.please bring back the old venus or at least the new and improved venus.we miss you.stop going out there already defeated.you talk a good game in ur interviews.now its time to back it up.your a grown woman and u have game.now i am going to get real.girl u have talent stop letting it be wasted and letting these little chicas with no titles or grandslams punk you like this.get off your dam high horse and get that ass back in gear.you want to be on the court now act like it.

I'm surprised Venus has won tournaments on Green clay. Her footing was so bad. She kept slipping all over the place.

4-3 in the second, she fights back from 4-0 down then hits a double fault and backhand in the net and a backhand wide, meaning Tati only had to hit one good shot to win the game and she did that with the volley (after Venus won two points). It was a disgusting match but to be honest for some reason I wasn't really that bothered. Normally when watching Venus I'm screaming at the TV but today I didn't. Hope Venus picks up her game soon!

think some people saw what serena did and figured venus would do the same. they are not the same people and they have different games. venus will need more time. and i still think that it might just be a good match up for tati. some players have other players numbers, not so hard to believe. anyway, good win for tati. and sloppy play from venus, but not a bad player to lose to.

I was like, bandage on her hand??? How are you getting any feedback from your shots?
The feel will NEVER be the same as if there is no wrapping but some people can play with less feel. Particularly baseliners who hit with lots of topspin. That's not Venus's game though...

Anyhow, CONGRATS TATI! You're a doll!

Bandage is for blisters.

Worst part of it all is that Venus can win most of these matches she loses easily, she is the better player. But her footwork today was awful, and clay is unforgiving of poor footwork. And she didn't show much patience either Tatiana didn't have to do anything great, but she played well.

Ana / Tati, please stop Petrova. I can't stand that cow.

Tati, very nice and solid play.

Venus, keep your head up. All champions fight through the hard times.

Tati is not a good match up for Venus on clay.

Hopefully Venus can learn from this loss and add some spin to her shots (which she can do somewhat) and play more patiently until an opening presents itself. When Venus plays on clay against players like Tati, Venus can only win by working the points. She cannot blow them off the court.

As for the serve, I am not sure what she can do. She needs to maybe play mixed doubles so she can practice serving under pressure (I think she did this in Wimbledon 2005 when she won). Her poor serving if affecting every aspect of her game. If she cleans up her serving she is back in the top 3 in the world.

Venus just made way too many mistakes today. She didn't give herself a chance to get into the match because she missed too many shots. That aside, physically she's looking better than ever! So fit and healthy, and that dress looked great on her. Her skin is so dark - that's why bright colors look good on her. Once she gets her game together, she'll be a force again.

Venus...error after error....maybe she could do with some different coaching. These error-festival matches seem to plague her throughout her career. It was painful to watch, and a big fan of neither player I was really hoping for some good stuff and didn't care who won. Clearly her current method doesn't work for her - I know she can string together some good matches and win big ones, but overall if she were to get some outside help she might be better off. I'm not saying a different coach is the solution, but at this point, why not try??

Congrats Tati.

Apart from one part btw 4-0 to 4-3 she played really well out there

Keep that going vs. Ivanovic too

I think the injury and lack of fitness did hurt Venus's level. Also hurting her were her VERY VERY BAD footwork on clay and the fact that Tati played smart and really came up with some good depth, good serving, good changes of pace and some really stunning stab/drop volleys and drop shots on key points.. you combine all of those things and you come up with a pretty clear smackdown.

Well done, Tati :hearts:

Venus

I'm just glad someone gave venus a real beatdown! she is really annoying me recently with all her empty promises and lame, laboured fighting talk and is clearly much more bigheaded, lacking in manners and respectful than serena...less talented, too....

Complete self-destruction by Venus. Serve was ineffective, footwork was all over the place (literally), FH was off by kms. Only thing decent were the volleys. A few good points here and there, with Venus hitting the corners well from both sides and trying to build the points, but these got lost on the avalance of UEs. I lost track of how many decisive points Venus lost with wild errors, some completely out of the blue.

Golovin was just a spectator.
