She is finally starting to put something on her second serves. If u can recall, commentators would always say what a huge differnce her first serve speed was from her second serve speed. If u watched Memphis final, all of venus's second serves were in high 90s, low 100s mph. I think richard finally told her that ppl were destroying her second serves becuz she would serve them in low 80s. Even against Sharapova in Miami, all of her second serves were in the high 90s!!

Good for her! I'd much rather Venus go for it and miss than have a powderpuff rammed down her throat.

well thats good becasue that is a sign of confidence.

and yea i saw the memphis final her 2nd serves were much faster than peers first serves and i remember a few 2nd serves at around 102-105..which is huge for a second serve

yup, i watched her play both kirilenko and sharapova and she was going for really big second serves all the time. of course she'll hit more dfs, but she'll also win more points on her second serve that way.

When did you start rooting for TOB, Max?

I notcied this when I went to nasdaq and saw her serving in person. Venus is regularly putting in second serves at 108-115 range and even hit 3 118 second serves. I guess she has decided to serve bigger and with that comes a few more doubles i guess.

y doesnt she kick serve..???

i mean... shes so tall...
isnt there less risk to it
compare to those high speed serves...
which is also returnable anyway...

B/c girls dont learn the kick serve. Most coaches have felt that many women didnt have the proper wrist strength to hit the serve effectivly. Sexist ....since I have seen Serena do it a million times but apart from her you wont see many women players with a kick serve.

eermmm...
I cant believe you actually compared Venus to these ordinary girls...
she's old enought to teach/coach herself, she did coach Serena...

I wonder if she can learn a really potent kick serve at this stage of her career. I have a feeling it's possible. It would be a great addition.

Justine henin?? Well Venus better learn a kick serve..Going for 2nd serves wont help her in tight matches :tape: Like match against Sharpy..I dont see why people r so happy about it..I hope she does something about that serve.. but 62% 1st serves in is pretty good..Now thats a good sign..

Venus gets too many wrist injuries to try doing that now....once she gets more match play going for those second serve bombs it'll only get better...don't worry...all williams finals are on their way once more:devil:

Justine uses a slice kick serve for her 2nd delivery

I'm almost sure I've heard Venus say something about her kick serve. At any rate, if Serena uses it and has far less dfs that Venus, I don't see why Venus hasn't done something to reduce the number of dfs she has. Even when Venus wasn't going for her second serves she has had a lot of dfs.

if she gets her confidence back...BIG TIME

that means...her serve is doing well....i think she is not there yet, but if and when that happens....she will have one of the strongest weapons in the WTA.

I think in a previous thread where we were asked to name our favorite 10 I admitted I like TOB. A little. But it's just so much fun to pick on her.

Good for her...now if she could only learn to have better placement on her first serve.

The spin, and where you make contact with the ball. The slice serve you kinda brush the right side of the ball at about 3-4 o'clock. Whereas the kick serve you actually come from under the ball at about 8 o'clock. The tosses are different as well, coaches will tell you to toss the ball slightly to the right for a slice serve, and to the left and over your head for the kick.

The kick serve is actually a VERY difficult serve to learn properly, there are only a few players on the tour who have GREAT kick serves and are able to use it as a weapon.

the reason venus has so many dfs is because on the second serve she brings that right foot ahead of her left one which she'll try and arm it in at that point because her balance is off
