Serena returning to play in tournament at Mason
From staff and wire reports

Serena Williams made it to the semifinals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open last year. Since then she has picked up her eighth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Serena Williams will once again add a big dose of star power to the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open tennis tournament.

Williams, who reached the semifinals last year in her first tournament appearance after a six-month absence from the WTA Tour due to a knee injury, is expected to appear for the second straight year at the WTA Tour event in Mason, Ohio, this summer, tournament officials said Tuesday. This time, fully recovered, she'll be introduced as the reigning Australian Open champion.

"I had a great experience in Cincinnati last summer, and I'm really looking forward to returning in hopes of winning the title," Williams said in a statement provided by tournament officials. "The facility there is great and the fans are very enthusiastic, so I'm looking forward to coming back."

The eight-time Grand Slam winner won the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla., Saturday, beating top-ranked Justine Henin 0-6, 7-5, 6-3. Once ranked No. 1, Williams fell to 140th last July but is 11th in the latest rankings.

"Serena returning is a real endorsement for women's professional tennis in Cincinnati, and we're sure our fans will be very excited to see her," said tournament director Bruce Flory.

"She played unbelievable tennis in winning the Australian Open in January and Miami last month, we are excited that she's included Cincinnati in her schedule this summer."

Williams reached the W&SFG semifinals last year. Her first-round match against former French Open champion Ana Myskina drew nearly 6,000 fans, the largest crowd to see a women's professional tennis match in Cincinnati history. After her elimination by Vera Zvonareva, she said she hoped to return.

The main draw for this year's tournament will be held July 16-22 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. The rest of the field will be announced in a few months, Flory said.
