Wow! I bet not too many people expected this upset.

I wonder what Karolina is doing differently, now that she's winning?

I certainly wasn't expecting Karolina to win this match although I did expect a breakthrough sometime during the clay season.

As to what she's doing differently now my guess is alot of it is playing on clay a surface she is much more comfortable on than hardcourts. And winning matches brings confidence which helps win more matches. Just getting past qualifying and getting the chance to play a few matches in a row obviously has made a huge difference. Will be interesting to see where she goes from here.

The only number Karolina struggled with was first serve percentage. The rest is great. The biggest diffeence in this match was clearly 2nd serve pts won though. Karolina won more than half of hers while Li was at 17% for the match. K-Lina was probably really agressive returning those. :)

Is Sperm makin a comeback or is she a Clay courter?

nbaker53
Apr 4th, 2007, 09:49 PM
Honestly, I don't see what the big surprise is? I'm not a very big Sprem fan but it was obvious when watching her in the past she had talent. Her main problem, as we all know, is consistency. Seeing her beat players who are ranked much higher than her shouldn't really be a surprise, after all she did reach the QF of Wimbledon and has an impressive game when it's on. Congrats and good luck in the next round

As for Na, it's not that bad of a loss. They both have similar games and plus it's only her first clay tournament of the year. Good luck with the rest of your clay season!

Certainly a nice, but not a shocking win for Sprem, considering the style of game of Na Li, who is quite similar to Karolina in a way that he is capable to lose to anybody when he shots are off. I expect smarter player like Bammer to beat Sprem in the next round. Karolina will never be a consistent player, because he has only one way to play - attack. I know a whole bunch of you likes her for that, but mixing it up once in a while wouldnt hurt. Has anyone seen her to hit a slice ever?

She played very well. I thank her for the entertainment. a lot of grunting, fist pumps, moving well and hitting big shots. Were a lot of "OOOOs," "Ahhhhs" and stuff from the crowd, many intense winners. She looks happy and confident, spent a lot of time talking with the kids signing balls after the match. Also, kudos to Na, a great player that will no doubt have a good year.

No, Na was not making a huge amount of errors. Karolina was getting the better of the exchanges, hitting more winners. Na was getting her second serve pounced on. It wasn`t a route, but Na was always playing catchup and Karolina closed out the sets.

You dont see the big surprise? Sure everyone knows Karolina can play, but she hasnt had a result like this in a long, long time. It basically came out of nowhere.

I know a whole bunch of you likes her for that, but mixing it up once in a while wouldnt hurt. Has anyone seen her to hit a slice ever?
I'm not contesting the fact that shes too one-dimensional, but to answer your question, yes I have seen her slice and Ive seen her hit some lovely drop shots as well. It's not that Karolina CANT mix her game up, its that shes stubborn and doesnt seem to understand when it might be best (percentage wise) to take some power off her shots.

I was at this match, in the shade, second row. Don`t let the little teddy bear hanging from Sprem`s bag fool you. This chick is an assassin. There were burn marks on the clay.... All Na could do is watch it happen...

Were a lot of "OOOOs," "Ahhhhs" and stuff from the crowd, many intense winners. She looks happy and confident, spent a lot of time talking with the kids signing balls after the match. Also, kudos to Na, a great player that will no doubt have a good year.
Love hearing that. :hearts: :worship: I remember when I saw her live against Mauresmo in Montreal the crowd was also Oooohing and Ahhhhhing at many of her shots and I was just like "that's my girl. :inlove:"

Thanks for the report. :D Are you gonna watch her tomorrow?

I'm pretty sure that normally Na can handle that speed and even hit faster than Sprem:confused:
LOL. No.

And also, I'd just like to point out that people shouldnt be too quick to suggest that all of Sprem's problems are solved as a result of this win. This is just one match. I think the biggest thing K-Lina will get from this is confidence, but her game will probably still be erratic. Let's just see how her next few matches/events go to see if this week will have really made a difference for her.

Wow that's quite the achievement. Especially how Li has been playing lately.
Great job Sprem!

um the reason Na lost is because it was her first career match on green clay ... she has probably never even seen green clay before this week :help:

That is a poor excuse  That was also Jie's green clay debut and she kicked butt. :p

You are welcome. :) No, I`m not going to make it out there today. Perhaps tonight or tomorrow. It truly has been a joy catching a player of the caliber of Sprem on outer courts where you can get a seat so close and on the level of the action. Was a lot of fun.

Well on her grass debut at Wimbledon she made it to the quaters  someone who saw the match already has said Karolina won because she was the better player, not because Li hit loads of errors

hahaha that's funny...

Whats funnier is some Li fans are deluded enough to think she hits harder than K-Lina :help:
